Keeping two days of Passover outside the land of Israel

Outside the Land of Israel, Nisson 22 (in 2019 this will be April 27, 2019) is observed as the last day of Passover. In Israel, Passover lasts seven days, so it ends Nisson 21 (April 26, 2019)

This discrepancy has its origin in the beginning of the dispersion of the Jewish people, before a set calendar had been established. In those days the High Court in Jerusalem declared the first day of a new month, based on sighting the new moon. Jewish communities outside of Israel could not know whether the High Court of Jerusalem had determined the previous month of Adar to be one of twenty-nine or of thirty days, so that they did not know which day was the first of Nissan. Not knowing when Passover began, communities in the diaspora observed an additional day.

Since we now have an established calendar, why do we continue this practice? The months are set; we have no doubt when Passover begins.

The Talmud states that because our condition in the diaspora is always one of uncertainty, the possibility exists that Jewish communities may lose contact with the established calendar.  Hence, Jews have preserved the tradition of keeping an additional day. This idea is not farfetched; ninety percent of Jews today live in a different country than did their ancestors a century ago.

Why, then, is Israel different? Has history not taught us so painfully that we have no certainty of permanence, even in our own homeland? Do Jews in Israel have some guarantee?

The answer is that living with uncertainty in the Land of our roots is still far superior to the security of being firmly established in the diaspora. The observance of the additional day of the festival is a reminder that our roots and our future, as well as our past, are in the Land of Israel.

Today I shall ...
...

remember that only Eretz Yisrael, the Land promised us by God, is the eternal homeland of every Jew.

Time to Allow Pollard to Go to Israel by Dr. Joseph Frager,

President Donald Trump will be eternally remembered if he commutes the sentence of Jonathan Pollard.

On October 1, 2018 the United States Department of Justice denied Jonathan Pollard’s request to transfer his parole to Israel.

This was reported in Hamodia and other News Outlets on Nov.23rd who published a letter to Yuval Kaplinsky, the Director of Israeli Department of International Affairs from Paula A Wolff Associate Director of the International Prisoner Transfer Unit stating, “The United States denied the transfer application because of the serious law enforcement concerns and because the applicant has become a domiciliary of the United States.” Ambassador Ron Dermer was cc’ed on the letter.

This means that the request for transfer of parole is coming from the highest levels of the Israeli Government. It is not clear why the Department of Justice continues to disallow transfer at this point since many members and friends of the Trump Administration are in favor of Pollard’s transfer of parole to Israel.

In June of this year I had the honor of speaking to the President and asked him point blank to commute the sentence of Jonathan Pollard. I am sure by the President’s response that he himself is in favor of doing this although he did not say this explicitly. The President has been Israel and the Jewish People’s greatest friend and supporter.

He has already done one of the all time greatest pardons of Rabbi Shalom Rubashkin. This was truly heroic. The Jewish People owe the President tremendous gratitude for this.

I believe that part of the problem is the ongoing acrimony between the Department of Justice and the President. The resignation of Jeff Sessions may have impact on the decision to deny transfer of parole of Pollard. I pray it is in a positive direction. Surely, if the President commutes the sentence it will move the process along a lot more quickly.

When and if he does it will be a Great Day for the Jewish People. The President will be eternally remembered for doing so. He can add the commutation of Pollard’s sentence to his long list of achievements as President of the United States of America. It will end one of the longest and saddest chapters in American Israel Relations. It is long overdue.

11/26/2018 Watch: A Kindergarten Graduation Ceremony in Gaza

At the graduation ceremony of the Al-Hoda kindergarten in Gaza, pre-schoolers carrying mock guns and rifles simulated Islamic Jihad militants storming an Israeli building on “Al-Quds Street,” capturing a child dressed in stereotypical garb as an Orthodox Jew and killing an “Israeli soldier.”

To the sounds of loud explosions and gunfire, the children, dressed in uniforms of the Islamic Jihad’s Al-Quds Brigades, attacked the building, placing a sign reading “Israel has fallen” in Hebrew and Arabic on the back of the “soldier,” who lies prone on the ground, and leaving the stage with their “hostage.” Then some of the children performed on stage, with an address by Yasser Arafat playing on the speakers.

See you Sunday and Shabbat Shalom
