Dear Purobi babbar,

"If humans do not care

About humans at all

With a bit of sympathy

Who else will care?

Say o mate!"

These powerful lines, sung by the Assamese singer Bhupen Hazarika in his song Manuhe Manuhor Babe, reflect the ethos embedded in his music. Bhupen Hazarika, one of India’s greatest singers, is no more. But his soulful music continues to inspire humanity like none other.

Recently, he was awarded India's highest honour, the Bharat Ratna, posthumously. But his family rejected the award saying that Bhupen Hazarika would be disappointed with the government's 'Citizenship Amendment Bill which discriminates people on the basis of their religion.

Today’s story looks at Bhupen Hazarika’s music and the inspiration behind it. It’s part of our biography section, where we profile the diversity of figures that represent history. Do let us know your thoughts by writing to the editor@madrascourier.com
