Time is a cruel thief…unless you can steal it back.

As a neurologist, Nick Reilly believes everything can be explained by science.
But he can't explain her—Quinn Stewart, an irresistible patient who knows things about him she shouldn't. And insists that at some point, she was his wife.

Something else he can't explain: he remembers her too.

Quinn wakes each morning remembering new details of the life they shared. She's desperate for the dreams to stop. With each one, she finds herself craving what she had with Nick more than the life—and the fiancé—she already has.

Nick and Quinn share an attraction neither can deny, but one that might destroy everything.

Just like it did before.

... An epic love-story over time.

"We're like parallel lines: always close - never together."

Note: This is a time travel, romantic suspense.

I need more unique and magical stories in my life, and this book was one of it! The romance was intense and addicting. The storyline was fantastic. And the writing was excellent. This duet was insanely riveting that I could hardly stop myself from reading Intersect for just a moment, in an attempt to write a proper review for this one.

“I think…no matter what universe we land in, we land there together.”

Parallel is the first book in the highly addictive duet, Parallel. This is Nick and Quinn's fascinating and deeply emotional story. Time? Fate? Death? No. Nothing can tear them apart!

Nick and Quinn have both been dreaming about each other night and day. When Quinn was sent to hospital after she "fell" and hadn't remembered something, she was shocked when she found out that her neurologist was the man she always dreamed about since she was a child.

Nick couldn't also believe that the girl in his dreams existed.

It was impossible. But even if they were destined to meet, they weren't fated to be together. They were total strangers. Different person with different lives. Nick had a girlfriend, Meg. And Quinn was set to be married to Jeff.

"I was having a dream again. About the girl in the boat. I can't see her face. I only know how she makes me feel - as if my heart is exploding in my chest."

The plot centered on Nick and Quinn navigating their feelings, and finding answers about the mystery behind their dreams. I was so frustrated with Quinn at times because of the poor decisions she made. Yes! She wasn't perfect. But the good thing is, her character was reflective on real life people. I truly understand and can relate with her struggles to choose the best for herself.

And as to Nick, he was simply amazing. A former swimmer, now a doctor, who was smart, witty, caring, and loving. He's everything you're looking for in a hero!

"...Spending a morning with Quinn was like being exposed to sunlight after an entire lifetime beneath fluorescent lights."

Thank you so much Elisa for bringing this book on my radar!

I highly recommend this to those who likes: Elizabeth O'Roark, time travel, romantic suspense, paranormal, romantic fantasy, science fiction, love triangle, forbidden, and a cliffhanger.

the only reason this is getting such a middle of the road rating is because i needed more.

the story provided enough to get me interested, but not enough to really help me form an opinion about how i felt about it. it feels more like a prequel novella, rather than the first installment of a series, if that makes sense.

so the jury is still out on how i feel about the plot. the idea of two people dreaming about each other and then finally meeting in real life is totally my thing. but the time travelling aspect? yeahhh, not so much. i enjoyed the early stages of quinn and nick trying to figure out what is going on, but i feel like the storyline is headed into the convoluted danger zone, which i find to be the case with most time travel books.

so i guess i will see. again, im interested enough to continue the series, but mainly just because i need to read more of the story to figure out if i actually like it or not.

❛ ❛ My voice is hushed as I meet his eye. “I think…no matter what universe we land in, we land there together.”❜ ❜

There was something so elegiac and poetic about this story; how the universe always had a way to bring them in each others life, again and again. Something so agonizing and gut-wrenching; not knowing how two perfect strangers had so powerful feelings for one another and yet being persuaded they’re only fantasying, being in love with a sort of imaginary person only builded and existing in their deepest dreams.

" I hate that I’m sitting here right now wanting someone I’ve never met.
Someone who doesn’t even
exist."

At the age of four year old, young Quinn woke up screaming and demanding where was her husband Nick, the dreams nightmares persisted until around eight or nine year old and then they just sort of vanished because of a traumatizing event. But at 28 and mere weeks before her wedding, Quinn had yet an other "episode" where she fainted and started then mumbling again about her imaginary spouse after a sens of déjà vu while visiting an Inn avenue. The passing-out in the middle of the day and realistic dreaming became a constant for a few days until she was finally hospitalized for checking and pin-pointing what was wrong with her. And what was her surprise when she found out that her neurologist was none-other than Nick in her dreaming-husband-Nick

"I miss someone I’ve never met. I grieve for him."

The time traveling aspect of the story was actually the main plot, the "how-why-where-when" were questioned by Quinn who just wanted to know what the hell was happening to her and Nick, the doctor who wanted a rational and scientific answer to how a perfect stranger knew absolutely everything about him. Now, I liked that this part of the storyline had an actual "scientific explication". Thanks to Miss O’Roark; who didn’t drop a crazy plot-line without more development for its "origine".

"The idea of a world without Quinn is already unthinkable."

At the end, the book is left with some voids to comble and I understand it; the author preferred to insert the final revelation in the next book in the duology. However, I can’t stop thinking that Quinn didn’t actually "time travel" but jump in her "parallel-world-self" or alternate universe alter-ego. We know that there was a tierce personne so set on separating them in each world but we don’t know yet why or who...

" How can I already feel so connected to him? From the moment we met yesterday, it was as if I was meant to know him, or perhaps, somehow, already did"

The romance part was harrowing to read not that it was bad; Quinn was torn between a "once in a life time, inexplicable and unexpected love" and the man she grow up with and was some steps appart to marry. I absolutely loathe love triangles, that’s why it was so hard to read.

" He’s the person I’ve waited my entire life to find. To belong to."

Quinn and Nick’s, connection and chemistry were literally alive throughout the book. They played with the love triangle a huge role in the devastating and emotional path the storytelling was embracing. With that said, I’m again excited yet terrified to face the second book.

————————————————————————

Am I the only one with a too-scared-to-read list of books literally MEMORIZED in my head?! Well, this series is in the top ten and now I’m half excited half terrified to read it!😭😭

I am a bookstagrammer, nearing 200 reviews and over 200 books read in the course of a year. Yes, I know, there are people who read double in less time, but that doesn't make my opinion any less valid.

I have been taking recommendations from booktok, bookstagram for months, sometimes they work - we are obviously allowed to have different taste. However, most of the time, it just feels like people are getting paid to promote the same storyline, the same couple, the same boring world building, the same annoying enemies-to-lovers plot without any essence at all.

I am crazy about erotica and quality sm#t but even that exhausts me at some point. There is only so much unnecessary sex you can read until you decide they don't make you feel anything at all anymore.

I usually feel numb and unimpressed half of the time around here and that is why I make a point of diving head first into less well known authors' works.

The first time I picked up an Elizabeth book, she completely obliterated that pattern for me. If you look back into my reviews for her, they are almost always five stars. I have never seen anyone take contemporary writing to this level, she is a slow burner but I am a slow burn lover.

Quinn is a normal young woman, living a normal life, about to be married to her childhood sweetheart. Nick is a neurologist who is afraid of commitment and keeps stopping himself from taking the next step with his current girlfriend.

The problem is, both of them have been having very weird vivid dreams lately, about each other. They dream about a past life where they were married, in love and they wake up feeling guilty every single day as they look to their sleeping partners next to them. They shouldn't be in love with someone who doesn't even exist.(is this fucking play about us?)

The closer Quinn gets to her wedding, the worse these dreams get, she passes out and her mom is terrified for her so they take her to a neurologist. At the hospital, that neurologist is Nick. They immediately recognize each other, they've been dreaming about each other, without knowing each other in real life and now they have to figure out why this is happening and why does it feel like they have been in love all along.

Elizabeth's writing flows perfectly, she doesn't make a single mistake, there are no repetitions and her stories are unbelievably original. Parallel is no different. Everything I love about Elizabeth is ingrained into this book.

I know this is a massive series and this book feels more like a prologue to the entire thing, but it was one hell of a prologue.

I lied once saying time-travel romance wasn't for me, I forgot I spent my entire middle school/high school years being obsessed with the tv show fringe, if you remember them, this book is for you.

I spent so many years of my life completely in love with this show, it was my entire personality for so long, my e-mail address is inspired by them and has been the same for over 10 years.

Different dimensions, fated lovers, time-traveling, course changing, event controlling, when Elizabeth added the paranormal aspect to this down-to-earth writing, it made it even more mind-blowing. She is so fucking underrated and I feel like it is my personal role in this community to make sure people know of her.

The worst part is how hard every aspect of this book hit close to home, reminding you every choice you make has a consequence, and we only have this life, are you willing to sacrifice your own happiness for the sake of everyone elses?

I think this is why I have been transitioning out of fantasy to contemporary way more often now. This feels so real it hurts, I think this is what I want from a book. I want it to feel real. This doesn't end on a cliffhanger per se, but you won't be able to stop at the end of it and it was actually a very short read, I encourage you to try this out.

I don't think I have the right words to explain this, you're just going to have to take my word for it.

4.7 Mysterious 🕒 Time-Travel Romance!! :P

WOW wow WOW!! This book rocked my socks!! It's like a sci-fi 'Inception' mix with romance juice! :P Nick and Quinn have separate life and even their own girlfriend/boyfriend BUT! They always dream of each other like... there are parallel dimensions between them, I don't know why? 🤔

description

*Let's Quinn tells you the story*
It's like.. I used to meet him before.
It's like.. I'm familiar with him without reason.
Idk why I always dream about him? It's weird (I know).

*OK come back to Pang lol!* I even think of this movie! Lol

Thank you Zuliate for recommend me this book. The concept is interesting! The story is intrigued! Goshhh just read it!!✌️

I devoured this book in a day... I can’t even explain how my heart is racing, my heart in my throat, butterflies in my stomach, and ALL THE FEELS running through me from this epic love story of two people who know each other heart, body, and soul... yet don’t.

Elizabeth O’Roark is a new author to me. Parallel is one of the best books I’ve read so far this year... magical, emotional, heartbreaking yet full of so much longing and love. *my poor heart*

I don’t want to spoil it for you because it’s really so beautiful to experience on your own but I will say this... how this story is told and how the author crafted her characters is complete perfection. I am DYING to read book 2.

Unique, amazing, *input all the adjectives here*, this is a story you don’t want to miss. I AM IN COMPLETE LOVE RIGHT NOW!!! 😍😍😍

From page one of this book, I was ABSOLUTELY HOOKED. This is a soulmates, time traveling romance, and I was obsessed with the dynamic between Nick and Quinn. Quinn has been dreaming about her husband, Nick, for her entire life. But she's never met Nick. As she's planning her wedding to her fiancé, her dreams are stronger than ever, and she ends up meeting Nick after a fall lands her in the hospital. Nick and Quinn are freaked out over their connection, and they're both currently seeing other people. But they can't deny their strong feelings they have for one another and start to spend more time together. They need to figure out why they know each other and what's going on with Quinn. I was obsessed with the connection they felt for one another and the angst in their relationship. They obviously know they can be amazing together because of the dreams they've had, but they're both currently trying to live their own lives with different people. I looooved how they were torn up about their relationship, but they just couldn't stay away from each other. There is definitely some mystery revolving around Quinn's abilities and what everything means, and I'm dying to figure out the answers. I am definitely planning on grabbing book two soon!!

Okay, so I'm going to try and make this a coherent review that isn't straight up gushing but let's just put it this way... YOU. NEED. THIS. BOOK.

I may have begged Elizabeth O'Roark for an ARC, but OMG, Parallel is straight up one of the most memorable, edge-of-my-seat worthy, twisty, insanely addicting books I've read in a long, long time.

I slept for three hours last night. I couldn't stop reading. If I were to try and explain this book (duet), I'm not even sure I could do it justice.

I was hooked from the prologue. In fact, I went back and reread it three times before even going to chapter one because I was all, okay, we're starting with a bang and it's happening from page one.

I don't want to give spoilers. I don't want to ruin the experience of going in blind and discovering every twist and turn as the characters themselves experience it all happening. But by the time I reached the last page, I had chills on my arms. Actual chills. It's that good.

Pretty much, you need this. June 13th is when Parallel comes out and I'll just sit over here while you mark your calendars. Go on, I'll wait. *taps foot impatiently*

Meanwhile, I'm going to be over here dying and theorizing and trying to figure out where Elizabeth is going to lead me next because every lead I *think* I have actual delivers me straight to a dead end. So effing good. Seriously one of my top, top reads--not of just 2019, but ever.

Part 1

3 💘🤔🤔🌟s

A very intriguing travel time romance read,
Quinn’s character didn’t thrill me, she was indecisive and slightly annoying.
Quiin and Nicks ‘s chemistry and connection were not palpable.
The story’s pace was mostly slow and some parts were dragging.
I loved the concept but the execution didn’t support it efficiently.

I've noticed in order to create angst this author almost always starts out with one of the MC's in a relationship. This would be fine, but then the MC stays w/ them for like half the book for no reason at all. It's clear we're supposed to hate the significant other bc obviously we want the two MC's together but on top of that it almost makes resent the MC bc why are you still with this person??

That being said, I did like the vaguely supernatural thing. The alternative timeline flashbacks were prob my fav parts of this. Quinn was a glorified doormat though and that put a damper on things

AWESOME!!
I’m definitely not going to do this review justice because I can hardly wait to get to the next book. I’m sure I’ll have to tweak my review at some later point in time.

Anyway.....Read. This. Book!!!!

This story has a ton of twists, it gives you a H/h that you root for the whole time, it has a unique plot, it’s paranormal (which is usually not my thing) and it held my interest 100% of the time. I devoured this book and couldn’t get enough of it. I didn’t even want to go to work. I just wanted to keep reading this book to find out what happened next.

So, I’ll write a better review later.....but I HAVE TO START READING BOOK 2 NOW!!!

***I always try to be as objective as I can with my ratings for DARK THEMES & TRIGGER WARNINGS, SMUT TECHNICAL CONTENT/INTENSITY, SMUT QUANTITY, ROMANCE QUANTITY, ANGST LEVEL, ENEMIES-TO-LOVERSNESS; the ratings for CHARACTERS, WRITING, PLOT, SMUT QUALITY, ROMANCE QUALITY, are instead tied to my own subjective reading experience and final opinion of the book.

actual representation of me me inhaling this book in three hours:

The concept behind this book is an absolute delight.
I picked this up expecting a contemporary romance novel with a side of angst, because I totally forgot to check the blurb, so when the paranormal element popped up I was totally unprepared.
In a positive way.
The mystery surrounding Quinn and Nick had me on the edge of my seat. Figuratively, because I listened to it while I was at work, but the angst was absolutely literal.
O'Roark's writing tickles my heartstrings in a way no many other writers do, and it totally wrecked my heart the moment it got paired to Samantha Brentmoor raspy voice.
I love Quinn and Nick.

"I just don't know how to do this - how to balance being what she needs and restraining what I want all at the same time."

When I find a book that excites me so much that I share it on my personal profile - as in I never share book stuff on there - then I know I have to shout it out to the WORLD!! This book. THIS book is that book. This will be the THIRD book I put on my favorites list for 2019. I made it to June with only two favorites listed - wouldja believe it?? Not sure how that happened, but Parallel just made the third book. So when I highly, excitedly, frantically recommend that you grab this book, NOW IS THE TIME. I mean it.

I’ll be honest - up front even, I was scared this book was going to be a knockoff of Jewel E. Ann's Transcend Duet. Nope. Nope. Nope. I’d be a fool to even make that comparison, but knowing that duet jacked me up, I held a degree of fear. Like, no one could take me on that journey like Jewel did. No way. YEP. Proven wrong, once again. I'm so thankful I gave this one a try. It was so different and amazing and will absolutely sit on the top of my favorites list. Just so....wow. The intrigue was there and stayed throughout the entire book. I was never bored, I was constantly on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen or what twist was coming next. Sooo so so sooo good.

"There is obviously something greater at play with us, something more than fate."

Just ONE look at that synopsis and I knew I was on board. The meaning of the title intrigued me. The minute I jumped in, I was gasping. I think one of my favorites parts, right off the bat, was the realization that heartbreak might strike me very early on. I knew I was in for the best treat when I saw the circumstances stacking up and the buildup starting to take shape. But the RACE. The race against time is very clear - the journey, the sense of discovery and confusion. She totally grabbed ahold of me and I was hooked from the minute I opened this book until I finished - and now I want MORE!!! Seriously, So f*cking good!! She nailed these emotions. The fear. The confusion. The longing. The questions. ARGH!! I need to know more, now! I need to know what happens!! Pleasepleasepleasepleasepleaseplease make it a worthy fight.

I just couldn't get over the fact of how easily O'Roark played with my everyday emotions. But not only that, it was in combination with things that I would normally brush off or things my subconscious would easily take advantage of in certain situations that just seem so commonplace in my world - but may not have any real explanations as to why they just 'seem to happen'. To have your subconscious invading your conscious, that is a scary scary thing to imagine, because at that point, what is reality? But when the reality of it is scarier than the potential, I can only imagine the fear and questions that would be inevitable.

"I'm not sure how you stop craving joy, and fullness, once you realize they exist."

O'Roark's writing was superb!!! I was in it from the beginning. I feel like, now, I need to blame everyone else for not suggesting her to me sooner. You know, no personal responsibility for my TBR or anything. HAHAHA!!! I like when a book challenges my emotions. Not just with my heart. Not just with my mind. But with common sense. With reality, not just perception. I am so in love with this book. It was everything I needed at just the right time.

When risking everything for the one you love without a second thought is your every desire, well....you are the man. When knowing the love of your life is happy because YOU made it happen, well....you are the man! My heart was pounding with every new revelation. Every twist every turn, every consequence had a deeper meaning, a deeper reality. The quotes that I pulled from this book moved me. I felt the emotion behind the words and the storyline, the meaning behind the innuendos and the lust - that desire that was so strong it ruled not only my mind but my heart as well. To have the ability to envelop that emotion with the words in the story.....well, I'm smitten. I want to read more by Elizabeth O'Roark . I love finding a new to me author and having it go this well. THIS well. I loved getting caught up in this world that twisted reality, but I must admit, I’ll never think of déjà vu the same way again. Ever. #Creepy

This is officially on my favorites list for 2019. I was blown away! I knew I was in for an emotional journey after just barely starting the book. Not only was I excited about the possibilities, I was so anxious I was pacing - the sign of a good book for me. Her words were heavy and articulate and she had no problems building a world around something so unbelievable, yet she made it completely believable. And, of course, by the end I physically felt my heart......fall. It sunk. My chest got heavy and my breathing changed. To physically feel a book like that is a wonderful thing. I need more, Miss O’Roark. I need it before it’s too late. Huge NEW fan. Thank you.

"I'll never let you float away."

What a mind-blowing story it was! Dr. Nick Reilly and Quinn Stewart had so much chemistry, MY GOD... it was out of this world. Can you believe it? This time-travel story didn't let my brain stay still for a minute from the first page to the last page. It was full of suspense, drama and undying love. And, surprisingly, I absolutely enjoyed every minute of it.

A few years ago, I read another book(Waking Olivia) by the same author, which is still on my favorite list. After reading her second book, I realized that Elizabeth O'Roark is truly a talented storyteller and still has the charm of great writing.

I am glad that I finally gave it a try after ignoring the book so many times because of that cheesy cover. But I dont care any more. This kind of good work deserves more admiration.

This book is so unique! Its really hard to write a review without spoilers and trust me this is the type of book you want to go in blind. Just know I love Nick and Quinn and I am rooting for them so hard! Their love story defies time, space, everything!

Starting book 2 now! I need answers!

Parallel is an exciting and suspenseful time traveling romance. I was hooked immediately. Why was Quinn having those dreams of Nick. Why or how could these dreams feel/look so vividly to her. The journey towards those answers and if she and Nick had known each other in a prior life was intense and filled with plenty of feelings.
Something that’s revealed in the blurb and early on is that Nick knows Quinn too so that added to a strong connection between the two of them.
Throughout the story the reader will get to know Quinn and Nick as a couple through her dreams. They easily fall back into old patterns despite them both being involved with other people. It’s obvious they have a powerful connection but nothing isn’t as easy as it seems.
I really enjoyed Parallel even though I felt the story went in circles especially with Quinn and her making a decision regarding her relationship. There sadly weren’t many answers but it ended with a great surprise/twist which is one of two reasons for me to read Intersect. More Nick and Quinn of course is my main reason.

★ 3 stars

i have mixed feelings about this... the premise was good and i found the time travel plot very interesting, but i think it could have been better executed. i wanted more twists, more mystery, and obviously more explanations. i had so many questions and they were left unanswered which was extremely disappointing.

also it was hard for me to connect with the main characters because they were bland and annoying in my opinion. i was liking them in the beginning but at some point they started to annoy me. and to be honest i wasn’t really invested in their relationship, it was pretty meh.

overall, this is not a terrible book. like i said, the plot is interesting and i enjoyed some parts, but i guess i was just expecting more.

“It feels like we’ve already waited forever. It’s like I’ve been missing you and craving you my entire life.”

4.5 stars!

Wow. I have no idea what to say about this book. Partly because my thoughts and feels are a tangled mess, and partly because my head is spinning with what I just read and the possibilities of what is to come. It’s the first book in the Parallel Duet and a beautiful, epic love story with a touch of the mystical, and it absolutely stole my heart.

Quinn Stewart has always had dreams/memories of another life – her life, but not the one she is currently living. It’s something she’s lived with since childhood, and it’s something she’s tried to just forget about in order to carry on with her life. But her dreams about a man named Nick and their life together are becoming more frequent and intense, and she can’t just brush them off - even though she’s engaged to another man. Each night she dreams of Nick, and each morning she wakes up with a sense of loss for the life that is not hers.

My eyes open and fill with tears. Nick is not my husband. He’s not anything. How can he possibly not exist when I remember him in such detail? When I feel so much for him?

When Quinn’s ‘condition’ lands her in the hospital, her Neurologist just happens to be the man she’s been dreaming about all of this time.

Dr Nick Reilly is stunned beyond belief when his new patient is a woman that has frequented his dreams for years. What’s even more bizarre is that she knows things about him that nobody else could possibly know. And when she opens up to him and tells him about the dreams she has of him, of the life she remembers them having together, he joins with her to investigate what could possibly be going on, and OMG I could not put this book down!

“We went to Paris for our honey—” I trail off. God. I cannot believe I just said that out loud.
He stops. “You’re telling me you dreamed about our
honeymoon?”
I should be too upset by what this MRI might uncover to be capable of humiliation right now, but I’m not. I feel the heat in my face and there is no way to stop it. “No comment.”
He raises a brow, holding the elevator door open and following me in. “Oh, you’re not getting off that easily. If we had a honeymoon in Paris, I need to hear all about it. What did we do?”
I roll my eyes, trying hard not to smile. “It was December and cold as hell, and we were there on our
honeymoon. What do you think we did?”
He laughs. “Wow. Any other glamorous trips where we never left the hotel?”

Quinn and Nick share an incredible connection. We see Quinn’s dreams of the past and their love for each other is amazing! And the story of the present is told in dual POV, getting us right into their heads to see all that they are experiencing, which is good, because not only do we get to see them falling for each other right up close, but this book does get confusing.

There is an explanation for everything that is going on, but it’s complicated! I still don’t have my head entirely wrapped around it, and I think that is the intention as there is so much to it, and so much more still to be revealed. We get the main idea, but there are hints and clues given throughout the story letting us know that there’s something more going on, and my head is spinning with theories!

And in the middle of it all is this incredible love story. Past and present, you can feel the chemistry between Quinn and Nick, and watching them begin to fall for each other (again), is just beautiful!

“Every day, you and I are witnessing the impossible. We’re having the same dreams, for God’s sake. You know things you couldn’t possibly know, and from the moment I met you, it felt like you were…”
“It felt like I was what?”
“Mine,” I reply.
The awkwardness of that word washes over us both. I’ve never called anyone mine in my life, and she is with someone else. But I also know what I said was right. She is meant to be mine

And can I just say… Nick absolutely stole my heart. He’s smart, sweet, funny, supportive and protective, and the way he deals with everything that unfolds is just amazing. I love him madly!

This is my first read by Elizabeth O’Roark, and I love her writing! She’s created a beautifully emotional read and an intriguing and unique love story with hints of The Time Traveler's Wife and Losing Me Finding You, and the way she tells the story is really clever. Those hints that we are given throughout the book come to a head in the final few pages, leaving us with a huge cliffhanger and even more questions, and I’m desperate to learn more. I can’t wait for Intersect.

I loved it! 4.5 stars.

Really interesting time travel romance that left on a big cliffhanger but luckily I can just read the next book 😅

If you enjoy time travel and a good dose of mystery with a mostly clean read (sprinkled with some hints of what's to come 🔥) then you'll really enjoy this book.

Update: Parallel was a solid time traveling (or is it time jumping) romance. A good time traveling romance has to have a good couple that anchors the story and luckily for us Quinn and Nick have great chemistry. I sped through this book in a couple of days and I will be reading the next book in the series at some point.

When Quinn is a child, she has moments where she wakes up screaming for her “husband” Nick. Understandably her parents are concerned because 1) She’s a child who has no business having a damn husband and 2) They don’t know anyone named Nick. But after years of therapy and witnessing a traumatic event at her family’s farm, she appears to have stopped having dreams about “Nick”……until years later when they reappear right as Quinn is about to marry another man. She’s even more shook when she sees Nick on the flesh and not only is he real, he’s her doctor and he’s been having dreams about her as well.

Things I Loved: Quinn’s character arc. She was so passive for most of the book and I loved when she finally stood up for herself.

I also loved Quinn and Nick’s chemistry. There was an ease to their interactions which made it easy to believe that they were “fated.” And the way he encouraged her to go back to grad school was very sexy of him.

Things I didn’t love: Jeff. More specifically why she was with Jeff for the majority of this book.

VAGUE SPOILERS BELOW

Also...while I loved Nick (for the most part) I hated how his feelings for Quinn (and his annoyance for Jeff which I understand) made him throw his professionalism out the window. You would think after years of watching Grey’s Anatomy that I would be immune to doctors being unprofessional but ALAS This is a very recent ick that I didn't even realize that I had lmao But I HATED how he was about to fight Jeff in front of ANOTHER COLLEGUE. Sir! Everyone is going to find out about your burgeoning relationship with Quinn because you can't even be cool and act like an adult. He was literally about to have a fist fight with Jeff. That's not romantic to me, that's childish. I get it, Jeff is an ass, but Nick was waaaayyyyy too chill about potentially losing his medical license. Quinn was more stressed about it then he was.

Update March 18th 2024: I must read the second book in this duet before I forget everything that’s happened in the previous book 😭

The story is told by two POVs. Our mains are Quinn and Nick. Quinn is out with her fiance looking for wedding venues when she's triggered by a recurring dream in which she is already married and living the life she did not get to pursue in real life. She's been having these dreams since she was four. The star of these other life dreams is a man named Nick. Nick has also been having flashes of the same dream but he never really sees the woman's face in his whereas Quinn sees every vivid detail. The fallout at the venue caused a seizure and landed Quinn in the hospital where she meets Nick and realizes he actually exists and they both feel an undeniable familiarity to each other and, for the rest of the book, try to figure out why.

My thoughts on this story are interesting. I dove into this book only having skimmed the description and I remember thinking it sounded good. That, plus the high average review rating and the gorgeous cover had me sold. I was absorbed in the first 40% of this story. The dreams coupled with Quinn and Nick trying to navigate their real life played out like a TV drama. They are both in relationships. Quinn is engaged and Nick is at the point where his girlfriend is just moving in sort of. Once they figure out each other exists it becomes really hard to stay away from one another as well as they begin to really "see" their significant others and not liking what they're strapping themselves to so to speak. Past 40% and you get into a dynamic of time travelling but it's brief and is played out to seem unbelievable. Quinn's dreams are also a direct link to the inoperable brain tumor that Nick discovered so then it becomes sort of a race against time to figure out what she is and why her life is playing out this way and should it.

My main sticking point in this story is the behavior with the significant others. Nick seemed to gracefully figure out his feelings over time and do the right thing while Quinn simultaneously fought her feelings and started turning into an ass to her poor fiance because she finally "opened" her eyes and really saw the person he really is. But in some instances when Nick talked about him negatively she lashed out and defended him. It was dizzying and annoying to say the least as the solution was quite simple. The book ended on a weird cliffhanger that equal parts made me want to continue reading the next book and make me stop in my tracks. I am still undecided to see if I will continue but this story wasn't terrible but it wasn't omg really good either.

Book: Parallel
Author: Elizabeth O'Roark
Type: First book in Parallel Duet
Genre: Contemporary Romance
POV: First Person (Dual)
Rating: 4 Stars!

“It feels like we’ve already waited forever. It’s like I’ve been missing you and craving you my entire life.”

“I think…no matter what universe we land in, we land there together.”

Wow. Such an incredible book. I'm a hug fan of Elizabeth O'Roark. Her book, Waking Olivia, was exceptional. And she did not disappoint in Parallel. It was full of suspense, drama and romance with a twist of paranormal. It kept on edge right till the end. I loved that it wasn't a straightforward romance. It was unique and full of twists and turns.

“If you don’t come find me, there will never be a time when I won’t come find you.”

While both the characters were really likable, there were a lot of questions unanswered and the cliffhanger was lackluster and confusing.

"Except spending a morning with Quinn was like being exposed to sunlight after an entire lifetime beneath fluorescent lights. I’m not sure, now, that I can be happy with less."

if you're looking for a quick and easy romance about star-crossed lovers with time travel elements then say hello to your next binge read.

this was actually pretty interesting! first time reading a book by this author and I have to say, it was a good read. did I love it? no but that's mostly because soulmatism is not something i'm a huge fan of. definitely will be reading the next one though, let's hope sequel syndrome doesn't hit.
