Those Hillary fans who never quite trusted the polls will be dealing with a sad case of the "I Told You So's" after Wednesday's election result. But none will be feeling as prescient as the makers of The Simpsons, who were the first to predict Donald Trump's presidency.

A whopping 16 years ago, writer Dan Greaney included a belligerent President Trump in the grim flash-forward episode, Bart to the Future. Under Trump's management, America in 2030 had been crippled financially and was relying on bail-outs from China and Europe.

Greaney said earlier this year that a Trump presidency, 16 years ago, "just seemed like the logical last stop before hitting bottom. It was pitched because it was consistent with the vision of America going insane."

Well, now it has happened. And The Simpsons' writers aren't happy – so much so, in fact, that they've shared their thoughts in the time-honoured way: on Mrs Krabappel's blackboard

Bart writes "Being right sucks" repeatedly in the opening credits of the first post-election episode.

All that's left to do is hope that the next US president also follows Greaney and his team's predictions: Lisa Simpson steps into the White House to solve the country's problems.
