Dennis Jernigan

Hi. My name is Dennis Jernigan. I have been writing worship music since 1981 and have been sharing my story of discovering my identity in Christ since 1988. I’ve been doing this a long time, right? Now that I am getting older, I feel even more urgency to share my music and my story—especially with the next generation. Since 1986, I have funded my ministry, for the most part, from music royalties and public appearances and have personally met thousands of people who tell me God changed their lives in some way through my music or my story. I remember being a boy struggling with my identity and feeling hopeless because I was never told change was even possible. On November 7, 1981, my identity was forever altered by an encounter with Jesus Christ. My greatest calling in life is not to change people but to draw them to an encounter with Jesus…and let Him bring about any change needed. I remember being a freshman in college and being told I could not major in music theory and composition because they saw no potential in me as a songwriter. Yet here I stand, 41 years and over three thousand songs later—many sung in churches throughout the world—and I do not even consider myself a songwriter…but rather, a song receiver. I mentioned feeling an urgency brought on by the aging process…but the greater source of that urgency has become my health. Having been recently diagnosed with damage to my left vocal cord, I have been advised to limit the number of public appearances in which I sing for up to the next 18 months. I am still able to sing and write/receive songs weekly, and I want to continue to share my techniques as long as I am able. This page will help me accomplish this. But the thing that brings about the greatest sense of urgency for me has been the initial diagnosis of early-stage Parkinson’s Disease. Presently, only my right hand and wrist are affected. While I can still play the piano, it certainly affects my stamina…and again, instills a sense of urgency to leave as great a legacy as possible in the areas of music, worship, and identity in Christ. My goal? To rescue as many as possible from the lies of the enemy concerning their identity, whether I ever get to make another public appearance or not.
