The Other Man

Rate this book
Nina Astor gave me one red-hot night, then disappeared like a ghost.
Three months later, fate drops her in my lap.
The only problem?
She's beyond off-limits, and we're worlds apart.

I'm a city prosecutor with a bit of a dark side.
She's the gilded daughter of a dynasty,
property of the scum of the earth,
and the man who owns her is the subject of my next investigation.

Nina thinks I'm on the right side of the law, but she's forgotten one thing:
When it comes to her, I'm not a good man.
To claim her as my own, I might sell my soul to the devil himself.

True be told...
When it comes to this woman, maybe I already have.

This isn't my first book by this author... Nicole French has become a favorite of mine over the last few months and I've been excited about this release and I wasn't disappointed. I went into it not exactly knowing what to expect but I knew it would be emotional... Because that's what this author does.

The author managed to break my heart, put it back together again, only to break it all over again. I'm not sure whether I want to scream and cry, curse this author out or give her a hug. I did NOT expect that Matthew and Nina story would make me that emotional, I expected a little but what I got was so much more than expected.

Matthew is a hard worker, he knows what he wants and he isn't scared to grab it. He's determined and I couldn't help but swoon when it came to this man. He was very protective and I love that in a Hero. He's the only male in his family and he is super protective of his family, he has a strong sense of family values, again another box ticked up.

Nina is married, she has a family, she has money, but she is lonely and that is made apparent from the beginning. She can't hide it. So when it comes to these two, there is a connect, Matthew brings out a different side of her, a happier side, and she brings out a different side to her but as much chemistry and spark there is between these two... None of this is going to be easy. Not with everything else coming into it. It's messy but this connection they have for one another is nothing like either of them have felt before. They bring out the best sides in each other and it shines. But will they get the happily ever after?

This book was full of drama, angst, emotion, passion, suspense, mystery and plot twists I DID NOT SEE COMING! GAH! I was completely hooked. Ms. French and her way with words always captivate me and this book was no exception. I was hooked from page one! I can't wait to see where the author goes with this and what book two will bring!

Money can buy you many things but it can’t buy Nina Astor De Vries Gardner the things she’s always needed in life! Living in a pent house, in one of the most expensive cities in the world Nina wants for nothing or so it may seem but what no one else sees is the deep pain, the bone chilling sadness and the absolute loneliness she carries around day in and day out! She was a beauty laying amongst the shadows! She is a nobody in the world of rich men! That is until one fateful night! One night where one man truly saw “HER”! If only forever could be what was in the cards for Nina and Matthew but her husband and family name won’t let it be!

Matthew Zola is a man who goes after what he wants! He doesn’t make promises he can’t keep and as the “man” of the family Zola does what he can to take care of those he loves! One night with the beautiful Nina and now Zola questions everything about the world around him! As he races the clock to catch the scummiest man to walk the earth Zola finds himself also trying to stay away from the magnetic Nina Astor De Vries Gardner but time and time again they both learn quickly that what took place between them wasn’t going to go away!

Only when their worlds come tumbling down around them neither is prepared for the blow and the future is now even more uncertain than it ever was! Happiness is once again just a fleeting thought!

I have to say I loved Zola when French first introduced us to him in Spitfire but Nina my gosh she is a show stealer and Nicole has wowed me with how beautifully she wrote this meek woman from the upper east side! She was quiet as a mouse and now she’s as fierce as a lion! Watching her grow and seeing her strength time and time again in the book had me wanting more! We tend to gravitate more to male leads but I can with certainty tell you that Nina will blow you away and you’ll be championing for her as her journey is about to begin!

I am not sure where or how to start with my review for this book. My emotions are literally all over the place. My heart has been broken, put back together and broken again. Some words that do come to mind about this story of Matthew & Nina are incredible, phenomenal, brilliant but mostly, the best word to describe this is epic. If you have read the Spitfire Series and the Quicksilver Series, then you were introduced to Matthew Zola and knew he had to have his own story. Not that you have to read them as this is story is it's own standalone. Matthew is a throwback to the days of Sinatra, Kelly, Martin and that is shown in how he dresses in suits and shiny leather shoes. His grandfather had instilled into him how to be a true gentleman, but while he is a gentleman, there is a side to him that isn’t, and oh, boy, is he hot! One night when he was out, he came across Nina. Not having any idea who she is, but knew she was classy, he became instantly attracted to her. She had such a keen sense of style and appreciated his. The chemistry between them is palpable. After an intense night together, she just disappears. Will he ever find this woman who took complete hold of his heart? And if he finds her, will she be all that she said she was? This story makes you believe in fate, in lust, in true love and I have completely fallen in love with these characters. Nina may sometimes come across as timid or meek, but she is anything but. She is a woman who has to come to terms with decisions made in the past. She is a warrior in my eyes and I am in awe of her. And as for Matthew, you will fall in lust and love with him as well! How can you not! I truly wish I could say more but I don’t want to give anything more away. All I can say, is you are crazy if you don’t read this book. And now that I’ve read it, I need the next book in this series like the air that I breathe! Bravo to this author, she blew this one right out of the park!

I've never read a book by this author before and I thought that this book was written fantastically. I defiantly was not disappointed and I really like the way that this author writes.
This book is the first in this Rose Gold series and I cant wait to read the next installment.

Rose Gold #1

Matthew is really one of the good guys, a really decent, loyal, genuine sexy human being and he's also extremely over protective which is always beautiful to see. He knows what he wants and he isn't afraid to get it.
Nina is a woman that is who is beautiful but also in need of a friend. She is a very strong soul who has been through a lot. Nina is very very lonely and she hides it well under her mask.
These two get to spend a night together after this other man really does see who this beautiful woman is and then everything changes and Nina is gone.

When these two meet they don't know who each other are its just that something passes between them and the magnetic pull that they feel is incredible. The chemistry that these two have is so powerful that its actually sizzling of them.

This book has it all it will hook you in and will not let you go. This book has twists, turns and complete shockers that you will not see coming. I feel that this author has written this book awesome. Seeing the journey that these two characters go on is very intense and I feel myself really rooting for them both to make. I felt that this author written these characters so good that you really wish that Matthew was a real man because by the end of this book that is what he is in your mind.
This story really will have your emotions up and down and you will be desperate for more, I couldn't put this book down, this book is a real must read.

Thank you to the author and the publishers for allowing me to read an early copy of this book.

ARC provided in exchange for an honest review.

This book is expected to be released on 10th March 2020.

I loved it! Honestly it took me a little bit to get into it but once I did I couldn’t put it down. The characters and the writing were so real. The angst between Matthew and Nina was off the charts! I loved all the supporting characters, especially Matthew’s meddling sisters and his niece and nephews! I do feel like I missed a little background not having read Eric and Jane’s story but I will definitely go back and read them! The interesting thing about this book is that it was from the perspective of Matthew. This was totally different from what I’ve read before and it worked! Overall this was a great read and a great start to a new series. I will have to go back and read the others series that this is a spin-off from. I’m also excited to read book 2 of the series in June! This is the third Nicole French book I’ve read and, once again, she didn’t disappoint. A solid read with great writing and characters!

I have been anxiously anticipating this book since reading The Scarlet Night Prequel, heck, since reading the Quicksilver Trilogy when I first met Detective Matthew Zola. I was so glad when I found out he was going to get his own book!

Nina Astor de Vries Gardner is a beautiful socialite who was raised with every advantage except love. She is trapped in a loveless marriage with Calvin Gardner, an abusive weasel who has been described as a wheel of gouda and a moldy meatball.

Matthew hasn't been able to get Nina out of his mind since their one Scarlet Night together. He has tried to move on, picking up blonde women that remind him of her, but all it does is make him want her more. When they finally accidentally bump into each other, Matthew is not going to let her slip away again!

The chemistry between these two is crazy mad! I fell hard for Zola in the prequel and just keep falling deeper and deeper. He is so honorable and such a good man, as much as he says how bad he is. Nina fights the attraction so much, but cannot stay away. She is like a moth to Matthew's flame, seeking the love and comfort she has never known before. My heart breaks for her, only sporadic spots of joy here and there, proving that money can't buy happiness. I will never again listen to "Strangers in the Night" without tearing up.

While Zola is involved with catching a dangerous man who is a threat to Jane and Eric, the time frame actually parallels the Love Trap, the third book in the Quicksilver Trilogy. If you haven't read it, you don't need to, but all these books are intertwined and the stories are much richer having read the others. This one is the first of The Rose Gold Trilogy so it has a cliffhanger we will be hanging off of until June when the 2nd Book, The Perfect Woman is released! Wish I could give this 10 STARS!

Do you have your one-click finger warmed up? You're going to need it on this one! EVERY STAR AND THEN SOME! Nina and Zola knocked my socks off! The way this author pulls you into her stories is amazing. Never thought I would like a book where one of the mains cheated. Threw that theory out the window. The way this story reads is very film noir in my head. In my mind, Zola was very Sinatra/Humphrey Bogart type charm. Old school classy but so HOT. Nina was all demure until Zola dirtied her up like a big screen siren. Their chemistry was undeniable and when it burns they know it will take out others, so they wisely decide to end it, but are so drawn to each other they are helpless to fight it. I can NOT wait to see what happens when the gloves are off!

So so many feels! Nicole French has an amazing ability to find raw emotions, and play with/torture her readers’ hearts. Book 1 of the Rose Gold trilogy will have you all over the place, both loving and hating the characters (ultimately loving them though), and wanting them to have their HEA. Of course, just like life things aren’t always easy and they’ll have their obstacles to overcome. I can’t wait until the next book, “The Perfect Woman” to come out this summer!

To everyone around him, Matthew Zola is a good guy, a hero, a loving brother/uncle/grandson, great friend; however, to himself, he’s a grade A @$$hole who is beyond redemption. Zola is an NYC DA, who never has a problem going after the hard cases, and when mutual friends (Jane & Eric de Vries) need help, he instantly agrees. After a rough day at work, he heads to his favorite bar in search of relief. He meets Nina Astor, who is the epitome of everything he wants in a woman (classic beauty, grace, a real life version of the great Hollywood films). After one night with her, he knows in his soul, he’s forever changed, but she leaves him in the morning without a word.

Nina Astor de Vries Gardner is NYC high society royalty, but don’t dare call her a princess. She is the epitome of classic beauty and grace, and was raised to do nothing but what is expected of her. Following the death of her family’s matriarch, her grandmother, and the turmoil of her cousin Eric’s life, she needs a momentary escape from her world. While having a drink, she meets Matthew, who makes her feel things she hasn’t (if ever) felt. This one night leaves her changed, but in the morning she leaves him without a word knowing she must return to her duty and life.

A couple months later, a chance encounter has their paths crossing again, and the tension and sparks are still there. Neither has forgotten the other, but can their very different worlds allow them to ever be together?

Unfortunately, this was a DNF for me. I found the plot really slow and it just didn't hold my attention. It was such a shame because the synopsis really caught my eye and I was expecting so much more. I also find the writing style hard to gel with, so this may be a case of it's not you, but it's me.

Ok here we go! I finished The Other Man yesterday but I needed some time to put my ideas together before writing my review. But don't misunderstand my waiting, I'm officially in love with this book. As always Nicole did an amazing job, beautiful characters, you can't help but love and her descriptions are so amazing you feel like you're there with them.

We meet Matthew as a friend of Skylar in the Spitfire series, he then comes back helping Jane and Eric in the Quicksilver series with their main problems. He was always in the background but a powerful character. And what a surprise it was when Nina gets all nervous on The Love Trap meeting Matthew on the event. Things get steamy in The Scarlet Night and it all brings us to this moment.

I said it on the group I'll repeat it here: Matthew Zola is Not the Other Man he is THE MAN!! coming from a humble family, raised by his Italian grandparents, he is a protector of his loved ones, even though he battles his own demons. He's the perfect combination of sweet and Alpha. I was always curious about Nina's life in the previous books and my heart goes to her, we meet a side of her that is was not expected. I remember Nicole asking if we would be put off by cheating, but in this particular case, those rules don't apply in my humble opinion. I do believe that if it's not working you can always walk away, but it's no that simple in some cases, like we see here.

This is the type of book where I kept checking the progress while reading, because I didn't want it to be over. I'm not even going to talk about Mr. Gardner, he would ruin this beautiful story, I just hope he gets what he deserves.

So now, I'll just be here patiently (NOT) waiting for book two. I have two favorite highlighted paragraphs but I don't want to spoil it for any one. Just read and let me know how it goes!

I have been dying for more of Matthew and Nina since reading The Scarlet Night. That little novella caught me hook, line and sinker. The Other Man is the first book in their story and it was brilliant, beautiful and completely addicting.

It is hard not to love Matthew. He’s hardworking, determined and the man knows what he wants and he isn’t afraid to go after it. Plus, the man is super protective. He’s the only man in his family and the way he looks after his sisters is great. I love the sense of family he has when it comes to them, his nieces and nephews and his nonna. Nina may be married, have a family, come from wealth, but there is no hiding the fact she is lonely. Matthew brings out a different side of her and Nina brings out a different side in Matthew. They are two halves that make a whole. However, their “relationship” isn’t easy and at this point I don’t think it ever will be. There is an insane amount of chemistry between them, seriously, when they are together things are explosive!

The Other Man is full of secrets, twists, turns, suspense, drama and HEAT. Once you start it you won’t be able to stop. I can’t wait to see what is in store for them in book 2 of the series. This one is a MUST READ for me!

I can't believe how this story developed! Oh my goodness, it was soo good! I pulled an all-nighter because I just couldn't stop reading. I thought I knew what to expect based on the prequel The Scarlet Night and the snippets of Matthew and Nina we got in Jane in the Quicksilver series but NO. No no no this was something else entirely. The chemistry and their relationship altogether was out of the world. It's the kind of story where you just want to eliminate anything that stands in the way of the characters, I swear.

Matthew claims he isn't a gentleman, but he has a huge heart, he is very loyal and is the do-the-right-thing kind of a guy. He comes from a big complicated family and understands women thanks to having several sisters. Matthew is one of my favorite book boyfriends EVER! And Nina is very under appreciated female character. She, same as Mr. Zola, is very loyal towards her family. She is very considerate woman and a loving mother. My heart was breaking for her throughout the story!

Absolutely five stars and I need the second book asap!

The silver lining to this lockdown is that I have finally time to review some books.

The Other Man is the first book in the new Rose Gold series, although there is also a novella that introduces us to the characters and their relationship with each other.
I had the honor to read a beta version of this book, and was super excited to get an early sneak peek.
I had always been curious about Zola because he's been a constant secondary character since the very first series, the Spitfire series, and I liked how both down to earth he was (especially when compared to millionaires and tycoons, and whatnot) but also a very strongly characterized man, with his Italian origins, his love for well-taylored suits and fashion, and his vintage vibes (I don't know if this makes sense, but if you read the book you probably know what I mean). Matthew Zola is a gentleman... but he can also be a "bad boy", as his penchant for married women attests.

Before reading the book I had been skeptical about him being matched with Nina because they seemed simply too different to share anything common. And yet they worked. I liked especially seeing Nina let lose and be more herself when she was with Zola than in every other aspect of her life. I also really appreciated how her point of view changed after meeting Zola and spending time with her. She started looking at the outside of her bubble world and realize how much of an illusion everything inside it is.

As usual, I won't spoil the plot. What I will say is that I was really not expecting those last revelations from Nina, and that they added both another challenge to their impossible relationship, as well as another layer to her personality that I had not expected.

This book was very angsty, as usual for this author. It didn't rip my heart out -- I think we'll have to wait for the next books for it, I can just feel it -- but it also made me feel so bad for Nina at times, and even for Zola, and his utter devotion to Nina. I loved how he kept trying to be close to her, even when to be able to do it he had to agree to just being friends.

My only pet peeve would be that the slow burn was a bit too slow in the beginning, although it is probably because it's the start of a series and I'm getting used to standalones lately.

Overall, this book got me hooked on the series and I cannot wait to read the next instalmenet. Oh, and Zola's niece is like the cutest little kid ever and she'll probably be a millioner by 18 with all the profits from that swear jar, ahah.

The Other Man is filled with suspense, drama and an inside look into a man who falls into an obsession with a married woman. As the title implies this book does involve cheating, but perhaps you've always wondered what is was like on the flipside to "be the other man".

Matthew Zota seems to have a penchant for married women, that is at least how he meet Nina Gardner. Being a single man in New York you'd think he'd have no trouble finding a single gal, but somehow the taken ones seemed to end up in his bed.

Enter Nina, whom he can't seem to stop obsessing about. She continually pushes him away, tells him it cannot work, that she is in fact a married woman, yet he goes back again and again like some kind of punishment. On top this obsession, he could have the potential to lose his job. He is an Assistant DA and the connections she has is really what could risk him his job. Matthew knows what love is, his grandparents fell in love as teenagers and were a strong foundation of what a relationship is and can be. Why he can't seem to find what they had is somewhat of a mystery, even to him. While he's investigating a huge case, Nina, the woman he's been obsessed about waltzes back into his life and the two become tangled, perhaps more than he could have guessed.

Nina is a rich socialite and tied to the current investigation Matthew has on going. Could those ties be deeper? We don't find out the full answer to this question in this book, but there are hints that perhaps they could be. Personally, I wasn't a fan of this relationship overall. Not so much because she was married and Matthew wanted to pursue her, but more so for the reasons Nina insisted or more like continued to stay with her husband. Nina is actually the one in her marriage with money, her husband is abusive, and she is unhappy plain and simple. So why stay with her husband and then also continue to play with Matt's emotions? I suppose this is what bothered me about their affair when there really seemed to be no motivation.

The story didn't connect with me, mostly I believe, because it was based on a one night affair where the emotions were still surface level and I never felt them connecting deeper. Most of the time Nina spent the story running away from Matthew telling him their relationship wasn't going to work while he chased her down and begged her to give him a chance.

I am already on pins and needles waiting for the next one!! This book brought out so many different emotions in me I lost count but one thing that never wavered was how much I adored Matthew. Matthew has a penchant for women who are unavailable and he doesn’t mind cause he is a bachelor through and through but that changes after one night with Nina. They both can’t stop obsessing about that one perfect night and know they can’t be together but Matthew doesn’t care and nothing will stop him from indulging in his obsession which is Nina. There is so much angst in this book that I devoured it and I need more Matthew ASAP

Right from the first page - this book had me.

Loved the story of Matthew and Nina, they are so very good for each other. He was raised with manners, by his grandparents; she was brought up by her grandmother, with impeccable manners. She genuinely cares for him, but she is taken. He loves her so much, he’s willing to be ‘The Other Man’.

This story brings us along on their journey to find love, whilst trying to help her cousin and wife get some justice for the crimes committed by a truly evil man and his sidekick.

Can’t wait for the next book.

Reading other reviews I realize I have a LOT of catching up to do, but I read this as the starting point for these characters and understood clearly what was going on.

Matthew. Matthew. Matthew. He's everything you could want in a book boyfriend. Nina has her own demons, and they are many. There's a mystery around this 'couple' that is hard to ignore and the author beautifully brings it all together in the telling!

So glad to have accidentally found this author - I'll be snapping up the rest of her stuff asap!

I really liked the love story between Nina and Matthew, a lot of the story was a overlap of a another book, although I guess in order to understand the relationship it may have been necessary. Good writing though from Nicole French, just wished it had left out the overlap. That being said it was a great story.

I just finished The Other Man and I'm utterly speechless. I feel like I just got off the very best roller coaster with Nicole French at the helm. I had previously read both the Spitfire and Quiksilver series by Nicole French where I had believed I had come to know Matthew and Nina fairly well. Boy, was I wrong! The development and complexity of these characters in The Other Man was amazing!

Matthew and Nina come from completely different backgrounds. He's an ADA in Brooklyn and she's a Manhattan socialite with a trust fund that would make some small countries jealous. But the thing they have in common is that they are both missing something (or more like someone) special in their lives.

Matthew has a long history of getting involved with unavailable, often married, women which usually works just fine for him. Until one night by chance, he meets Nina in a bar and feels something majorly change. They have one fabulous, passion-filled night together which makes Matthew question all he thought he wanted in life. Until the next morning, when Nina drops a major bomb--she's married--before vanishing into the busy streets of NYC. After months of searching, Matthew finds Nina in a most unexpected place. Once reunited, their chemistry once again takes off and practically crackles out of the book! The angst and desire between them is palpable especially as they have to navigate their way through what their hearts (and bodies) want and what is socially acceptable.

Nicole French has spun a web of drama, sexual tension and so many plot twists, be prepared to feel all the emotions! This is the first book in a series of three (in addition to the prequel, The Scarlet Night, which details the night Matthew and Nina meet) so there is a cliffhanger. But just like in her previous series, I am sure Nicole will make it worth the wait and take these characters on a journey vastly beyond anything you could possibly imagine. I can't wait to read The Perfect Woman now!!

DNF.

There was one reason that I couldn't get into this book. The hero, Matthew Zola, is known for his affairs with married women. He has one night with socialite Nina Astor and he can't forget her like all the rest. She's in a loveless marriage with a man who is abusive.

If you don't mind a complete disregard for marriage, this book will probably be fine. It just isn't my thing so I stopped reading about 30% in.

Nicole French is going to kill me. Seriously how does someone write a book with so much emotion and longing and frustration! I would read a chapter and be so frustrated and then put it down only to pick it up again because I needed to know what happened next. She was throwing crumbs of information at me the entire book and I WAS LOSING IT. I am so excited for the next one but also how much am I going to want to chuck my kindle across the room?

“You have to go home, Nina. For your sake, you have to remain another man’s wife.”

Nina Evelyn Astor de Vries Gardner - New York heiress
&
Matthew Zola - investigator prosecutor with the Brooklyn DA

And for a change - she is the rich one, he is an "ordinary mortal" who fights for justice.
She's married with a child, he's single.
Her husband is cruel and peace of s*it... Matthew is all she ever imagined she could have but did not dare to dream.

An intertwined love/crime story!

I really struggled getting into this book. I knew what to expect after reading The Scarlet Room but it was still hard to watch Zola pine after a married woman. I would get so frustrated with why he couldn't just move on from his night with Nina. The more into the book I got, the more I understood why. Nina and Matthew have such an intense connection and crazy hot chemistry. Ultimately, they can only fight it for so long. I can't wait to find out more about Nina's marriage and why she can't leave him.
