When two wildly successful Israeli companies put their technology together, what do you get?

A new pilot partnership between urban transit app Moovit and driving destination app Waze.

Gradually rolling out beginning with Android users, the pilot matches Moovit users with Waze Carpool drivers in the US, Brazil, Mexico and Israel. All riders share the costs. The first ride is free for new riders.

Moovit users tap on the drive details and are directed to the Waze Carpool app where they can request to join the ride and get notified when the carpool is confirmed. They can follow the driver’s progress to the pickup location using the Waze Carpool app.

This is the first third-party transit integration for Waze Carpool, and the first third-party carpool offering to be integrated into Moovit.

“By riding together, we can all take cars off the road and help decrease traffic and congestion for everyone,” said Aron Di Castro, Waze Director of Business Development & Partnerships.

Waze, with more than 115 million users in 40 languages, uses crowdsourcing and maps to provide drivers with real-time best routes to their destination. Google acquired Waze in 2013 for $1.1 billion.

Introduced in 2011, Moovit claims more than 500 million users. Its free urban mobility iOS, Android and Web app provides full multi-modal transit options in 3,000 cities, 93 countries, and in 45 languages.

In other Moovit news, a new partnership was recently inked with Microsoft and Aira, an app connecting blind and low-vision users with trained agents who provide visual information on demand. By integrating Microsoft’s Azure Maps onto its platform, Moovit will enable Aira agents to give users real-time public transit guidance.
