Okay, first, did I miss something? I thought this was meant to be a duology; why is there another book?

So, since I have a feeling that this review might be a bit of a mess, here is a little TL;DR. I was really enjoying the book; I thought it would end up with a good rating. But then the end hit, and it seriously threw me off, and last night when I finished, I was seriously angry with the book. Today, when I slept on the review, I'm just disappointed.

So, back to the review.

When I started the book, I was really enjoying it, and I had a hard time not grinning. It was fun.

So, I already mentioned in the review for the first book that I'm uncertain with Veritas. For someone that old and powerful, she just reads a bit too immature for my liking and does way too many reckless and not logical things. And that did not really change in this book.

Same with her and Ian, I do not necessarily feel any chemistry between them. Which definitely drags the story down. But still, the plot and Ian were able to hold the story without me exactly rooting for them as a couple.

Ian is my all-time favourite character from the Night Huntress Universe. I was terrified that he would lose his backbone and will be just walked over all the time. While that did not happen, he's definitely loosing some of his charms. But even despite that, he's still the best character.
Oh, and I completely forgot to mention something the first time when I was writing my review. Thank you, Lien, for reminding me! ❤

I really liked Ashael; he was an entertaining character and fun addition to the story.

So, where exactly this went super wrong for me? I was reading this book as the final one. And where the book was nearing the end, I started to feel like it was way too rushed. It was rushing to solve the Dagon problem. But then the show there and more drama. And we are almost at the end of this book. So, I'm confused.
But then a completely different plot for the third book dropped out of skies, and I'm over it. Because it was introduced at the very end of the book, it just feels so unnecessary and just creating a problem for the sake of having another book. I might have been more okay with a third book being added to the series if the "plot" started to show way earlier. But this, all of sudden in the last two chapters or so?

So, overall, the book is now a 2,5 ⭐ for me.

Another fabulous read by the amazing Jeaniene frost!!! I love her vampires! And Ian has been a fan favorite of mine from the beginning!! You can't help love this snarky, charming and sexy vamp with a piercing on his junk!!! And veritas the bad ass law guardian is just the women to keep this bad boy in line and together their one hell of a couple. In this new series spin off jeaniene is introducing all kinds of new and interesting characters like Ashael a handsome demon with black wings who is feared even by other demons and who has a secret connection to veritas. Also the old and secretive Yonah who was once a powerful demon Prince who hides away on a island were all kinds of creatures live. One of the coolest creatures is the Leviathan a water creature who guards the shore of the island to touch one is to drown forever! In wicked bite veritas has left Ian behind to protect him from the evil dagon a demon who had a score to settle with Ian and as long as dagon lives he is danger, so veritas goes on the hunt to find and kill him.But Ian refuses to stay behind and if that means going before the vampire council and getting shit stirred up He will. He doesn't remember much, but he knows that what him and veritas had was real and he'll be damned if anybody will keep him away from her!! Awesome storytelling and characters with great chemistry and full of passionate steamy vampire sex!!! It doesn't get any better then that!!! Next up book 3 Wicked All Night Coming in early 2021 ! Jeaniene Frost is one of my very favorite vampire writers of all time and anytime I get to sit down with one of her books I know I'm in for a hell of a ride!
Until next time Luv's 💕💋

Wicked Bite was a good read. I didn't love it as much as I did the first book, but it was still very good. I think the thing that made this book a little less for me was I felt at times it was a bit slow. I still loved Veritas and Ian in this book. I still shipped them hard as a couple. I enjoyed the plot. I loved Cat in this book she really shined. But I felt the book slowed a bit, mainly when Veritas and Ian were apart. Ashael was a new character that I really liked. I hope to see more of him. I couldn't stand the vampire Council. They gave me twilight/ volturi vibes. I almost lost my shit with the little cameo from Timothy, beloved but long lost mate of Bones, Ian and Spade. I really really hope we get more from Timothy in later books. Overall I really enjoyed the book. However the ending I'm torn on. The whole Veritas has a unknown fiancé thing has me worried we are going into another Bones/Gregor story line and I really don't know how I feel about that.

TITLE: WICKED BITE
AUTHOR: Jeaniene Frost
SERIES: Night Rebel
RELEASE DATE: January 28, 2019
GENRE: PNR
THEMES & TROPES: Vampires, Demons
RATING: 4 Stars
CLIFFHANGER: You bet

READ MY REVIEW ON THE BLOG

Jeaniene Frost is a sure bet for a good time. WICKED BITE is par for the course. I was eager to finally continue after the cliffy of SHADES OF WICKED she left us hanging with. Please mind that it is vital you read the first book before you read this one. I also want to point out that you may enjoy this series more if you've read all the other stories in this universe.

I have to say that Veritas made it a little harder for me to like her this time. She eventually succeeded but her irritation with Ian, her denial of the bond they shared, the way she treated him at times was unfair and unwarranted. She gave him little credit to be able to hold his own while she was trying to fulfill the task she was entrusted with yet was reckless and even interfered out of pride when he had the chance to kill her archenemy because "he was hers to kill."
Was this . . . was this what trust felt like? If so, it was like sinking into a warm bath after an achingly brutal day. I wanted to wrap myself in the glorious, unfamiliar feeling, but it was also an indictment on everything I’d done since Ian had come back from the dead. I thought Ian couldn’t survive the threats I still had to face, yet he’d proven more than able to meet every challenge I’d feared plus several I hadn’t even thought of.

Throughout the story Veritas was fighting with the other half of her personality that would make her whole. I loved that she trusted herself and Ian when it was time to let her second nature loose.
“Maybe you don’t realize it,” I said between clenched teeth. “But I’m having a problem at the moment.”
“Does that problem have eyes that shoot silver beams while darkness billows behind her like a cape?” He grinned. “Made me rock hard seeing it.”
He was aroused by my supernaturally sociopathic other half?
“Fuck. You,” I bit out.
He nodded. “Solid plan.”

Ian doesn't back down on principle, everything for him was a challenge. I loved his cunning, the way how he kept surprising everyone because they'd underestimated him. He is the kind of character who cheerfully laughs death in the face. I didn't think it was possible but I think I love him even more than Bones. He's so protective, wickedly sensual and charming, and so, so funny.
All I felt was how tightly he held me, how his power sparked against my skin, and how he kissed me with delicate savageness, as if he sensed my turmoil and sought to turn it into raw need instead.

At the end of this book we get another twist, totally out of the blue but felt very familiar with what Cat and Bones went through in DESTINED FOR AN EARLY GRAVE. I'm not a big fan of repeat plot tools, especially if it's in the same universe but we'll see how this will turn out in the next installment.

Overall this was a fun ride and a great addition to the Night Huntress world. As always, Jeaniene Frost's writing is totally engaging and captivating. We get a little Cat and Bones, Mencheres, Vlad and Leila. I am looking forward to the next installment and hope that Veritas will go back to being the badass character she was in book #1! And of course I need more Ian. Boy, the guy is sexy.

This review can also be found at Carole's Random Life in Books.

I loved this book! It is no secret that I adore the entire Night Huntress universe. Ian has always been a great character and I was thrilled when I learned about this spin-off series featuring his character. I loved the first book in the Night Rebel series, Shades of Wicked, and couldn't wait to get my hands on this newest book. Let's just say that I went into this book with sky-high expectations and I wasn't disappointed. This book was just as good as I had hoped it would be.

This is the second book in the Night Rebel series which I would recommend reading in order. This book picks up shortly after the events of the previous book. Ian and Veritas are not together. Ian shouldn't remember any of their time together and Veritas is committed to finding all the souls that were freed in order to save Ian. There is one big problem. Ian doesn't want to forget Veritas or let her go.

I love Ian and Veritas. I was a bit frustrated with Veritas at the start of this book because I just wanted to see Ian and Veritas together and she was making things difficult. It all works out though because Ian rises to the challenge. I thought that their personalities really shined in this book and their feelings for each other made my heart happy. I think that I liked each of these characters a bit more with every page. They are both smart, tough, and willing to take risks.

I thought that the story was really exciting. Even though I feel like I know this world really well, I love that there were a few surprises in store in this book. There was plenty of action and there were times that I didn't know how things would work out. It really seemed like they were outmatched at times and it was great to see Ian and Vertias rise to the challenge.

I would highly recommend this book to others. I had a fantastic time with this book and loved that it was everything I hoped it would be. I cannot wait to read more of this amazing series!

I received a digital review copy of this book from HarperCollins - Avon Books via Edelweiss.

Initial Thoughts
I loved this book! Ian and Veritas are both great characters and I just love them together. There were quite a few surprises in this story and tons of excitement. There were some key appearances by some key players in the Night Huntress Universe and we also met a few new characters. This was one of those books that I found almost impossible to put down.

This was my most anticipated release of 2020.. it wasn't exactly a disappointment. It just wasn't as exciting as the first book. and I felt like the twist at the end has been used in Frost's books before in her other vampire series. Definitely have less hope for book number 3. Still love Ian and Veritas but there are some other characters and reveals I could do without.

My most anticipated read of the year and it didn't meet my expectations... how sad is that? Shades of Wicked was just too good to live up to...

First of all, I loved the amnesia turnabout in book one but now I kinda wish Jeaniene Frost hadn't used it and just let them continue their amazing chemistry without interrupting it.

The magic was just gone. Veritas spilled everything pretty early on (I really thought she'd be more resistant) which made me agree with Mischa's belief that the use of amnesia is plain lazy. What was the point it that? It didn't add anything to the plot except that Ian and Veritas now had "new" hurdles to jump through (even though Ian remembered most of the details anyway). I was not a fan of this half thing they got going on - they partly had to start their relationship anew and partly not. The strong chemistry I felt got left behind somewhere back then when I first read SoW in January last year. After Ian suddenly got all his memories back, their chemistry should have been back to normal but I didn't feel it, at all. And leaving out the amnesia part, they were basically back to their very first beginning as well - hunting down Dagon. Now that I think about it, book two is basically a recycled version of book one. Jeaniene Frost should have made SoW a standalone...

Maybe it's just me but I also didn't like how emotional Veritas suddenly became in this installment. She didn't act like someone who's over a thousand years old.

And can we talk about that ending? Because wth? It was totally unnecessary to drag this out even longer, on top of that with a newly introduced character that came out of NOWHERE.

There were good things too, of course, though I had to scrape really hard to find a few things... Overall, I did enjoy the book to a certain degree, even though I know it doesn't seem that way but this installment just couldn't compare to the first.

Ashael. I would love to read a book about him sometime. If Jeaniene Frost could make that happen, I'd be happy to buy it. Though he came off as a bit shady at first, I instantly took a liking to him.

Ian. Well Ian, weirdly enough I don't have much to say about him? Here I thought he was great as always but he kinda took a backseat in this installment. He's still present throughout the whole book so that's not what I mean but his usual mischievousness was missing (beginning excluded) and he got overshadowed somehow.

Silver. The cutest winged "dog" ever lol.

3.5 - 4 Wicked Stars!!

This book starts right where Shades of Wicked left off with Ian having vague memories and determined to recover his memories and more importantly find Veritas. He’s finally reunited with Veritas who took every opportunity to ditch Ian but Ian was tenacious and he wasn't having any of it!! They finally come to an understanding and decide to work together to finish what they started with Dagon.

Ian, Ian who was formally allergic to commitment and marriage took every opportunity to remind Veritas of their martial status much to Veritas’ dismay. It’s hilarious how protective Veritas is of Ian which is sweet and fun considering Ian’s uber powerful and certainly more than capable of taking care of himself.

We are introduced to few new characters and I’m totally intrigued! We’ll definitely be getting more of these characters in the next book, I love that we get cameos from the Night Huntress characters, it makes this fan super happy!

Final thoughts: This Book was.....busy for lack of a better word. There was a lot going on but oh lord.....that ending! Yikes!! Let's just say that the next book is gonna be so freaking good! Veritas' family history is definitely interesting and it’s starting to intrude, so along with a new character theres some major troubles ahead for Ian and Veritas.

2.75 Stars rounded up to 3.

Unlike the book, I'm going to make this review quick and painless.

Worst book I have ever read by Jeaniene Frost
It just dragged on and on. I almost dnf'd it many times.

Is there steamy sexy adult scenes? Yes.
BUT! The suspense, the world build and the EXCESSIVE amount of words about NOTHING drove me insane. It felt like she was more interested in completing some kind of word count quota than in writing an interesting story.
There are some good parts. But they are like small gems buried under tons of debris.

I love Jeaniene Frost books. Up till now there was only one Duet spin off that was only okay. All the rest were fantastic. What she has done to two of the most interesting characters in her Night Huntress Universe is, well, I hate to say it but,
SHAMEFUL

The first book in this trilogy is Shades of Wicked I gave it 4 stars. I enjoyed it but thought it was off just a little bit.
But this one takes the cake for BORING! and MONOTONOUS!

Once I get the taste of this one out of my mouth I will read the 3rd and final book in Ian's story.
And keep my fingers crossed that it will be more up to par with her other books.
😡

P.S.
It took me 18 (Eighteen) days to read this! Think about that!

If you would have told me during the first few books of the Night Huntress series that
A – I was going to love Ian

and

B – His books would be better than Vlad’s.

I would have called you a dirty liar.

description

But it is totally true and the reason for that isn’t just Ian but it is also Veritas. She is such a cool character with a lot happening and she is the perfect match for Ian in every way.
“Clever, calculating, and cruel.” Ian’s voice dropped to an insinuating purr. “No wonder I married you.”

Once again Veritas and Ian need to team up to search for a demon both has past dealings with. As they travel around the world both dodging him and trying to find a way to kill him we learn more of what Veritas’s nature really is and how she is really one of a kind.

Ian is all kinds of smooth and it is funny the number of people that still can’t believe he is a changed man and willing to try out monogamy let alone marriage. I enjoyed seeing some of the more tender parts of Ian and his utter acceptance of everything Veritas is.

As always seeing a few of the members from the Night Huntress series mixed in was great and did I catch a few hints of possibly another story in the Night Huntress world involving Cat, Bones and a little munchkin they call daughter. I think I might have. *fingers crossed*

The ending is a bit of a shocker once again but at least Veritas and Ian are in a whole slew of trouble together this time. I’m looking forward to seeing how it is all going to shake out especially with that reveal at the end. So until next book remember
sometimes you have to kick the darkness until it bleeds daylight.

It’s been a long time coming. I feel like I have been waiting for this story for forever and I think with that came a lot of expectations. WICKED BITE is book two in the Night Rebel series. Because I was such a fan of the original Night Huntress series, I was looking forward to seeing what Frost would do for Veritas and Ian.

The best thing about this book is that Frost stays true to the beloved characters of the series. Their personalities came out strong in this series, which I think will make readers very happy. The beginning takes a bit of time to warm up, but once the action starts, I found myself enjoying the book more.

There’s a touch of humor that runs through this entire book, but when you pair the sexiness with the action, it really makes for an interesting read. The overall tone of the book is set by Veritas’ character, who I think is the true star of this novel. I am looking forward to the next book in the series. Hopefully, it won’t take over another year before we get the next installment in our hot little hands.

I'm starting off by saying that this series is AMAZING!! Seriously, if and when you meet Ian, you'll be so freaking thrilled. Add Veritas to the mix... non-stop excitement!

Seriously, if you haven't started this series yet, why not? What is stopping you???

While I'd love nothing more than to tell you everything that popped off in this book, to tell you all of the things I loved, I can't. No spoilers, right?

So here are some of my favorite things...

🪄 Ian, of course. This vampire is a constant surprise. His sarcasm, his wit, his charm, his fearlessness, his bravery, his honor, his passion... what is there not to love?
🪄 Veritas was also catching me off guard. When we left off, she sacrificed her own happiness for Ian's. Could her heart be any more true? And then when he does whatever it takes, pissing people off along the way, how was she supposed to resist him? And then her powers? Only gets better. Oh and her family gets bigger *hint hint*
🪄 the magic is always fun. When they both go against Dagon (again), I was blown away by how much I enjoyed those scenes.
🪄 everything. Seriously, there wasn't a moment of boredom, annoyance, frustration, or the like. I was engaged, entertained, and in love!

The ending of this one introduces some new drama for the next one and I can't wait to find out how it all unfolds. As long as these two remain together, I'm good.

Throughout this book, I was lukewarm at best until the crap finally hit the fan in the last few chapters. Things changed drastically in those last few chapters. I don't know what I was expecting to make me not love the beginning and middle of this novel. Maybe it was the amnesia plotline that made me take a step back and reconsider because I dislike it in general regardless of the book or author it's written by.

Veritas is slowly winning me over. I got off on the wrong foot with her in the last book in Vlad's series and even though the first book in this series blew me away I was still iffy about her. Though I can't deny the chemistry she and Ian have and don't even get me started on how much I adore all the witty banter and sexual innuendo-laden humor. She's strong and protective of what she loves and that includes Silver (which is too adorable to harm! Please may the writer gods protect the beautiful and innocent creature!)

Ian has proven himself to be time and time again an amazing and protective guy to a degree. He may come off as the bad guy depending on if what he wants will affect the other person or not. I like how bloodthirsty he is when it comes to protecting Veritas. It's sweet in a very disturbing and creepy way because he's a vampire... duh.

I didn't know what to expect from the next book in the series before the very last chapter and boy am I ready! That wasn't even on my mind and it was a perfect way to end this book. Things were resolved enough where it felt like a good stopping point while at the same time casting out future storylines that will come to pass. I wasn't mad at this ending and I'm so glad the amnesia thing is over and done with at this point.

The Audio Book:

The narration was great! I liked how she kept up Veritas's accent throughout the novel. It helped to immerse me into the story even farther.

If someone had told me a few years ago when I first 'met' Ian that I would fall head over heels in love with him and would root for a HEA, I would have laughed in their faces. Sure, he was a fascinating character but in those first few books I wanted to shred his heart with a silver knife. But as the Night Huntress series progressed and more of Ian's layers were revealed, I started reluctantly liking him.

Ian saved the last of the Night Prince series. If it wasn't for him, that book would have been a total waste of time. But it did set the foundation on which Night Rebel stands on so I can't really dislike that book. Shades of Wicked showed us a side of Ian I never suspected existed. Oh I knew he's loyal to those he loves but the dept of that loyalty surprised me. He portrays himself as a reckless, brainless manwhore but the truth can't be further from it (except on the manwhore part, that's totally him). The last few chapters of Shades of Wicked were brutal and broke my heart. And the waiting for Wicked Bite was excruciating. Needless to say I devoured it in a couple of days.

Oh the drama of the first several chapters! Ian went all out trying to get his memory and wife back. What I wouldn't give to be able to tell Ian from One Foot in the Grave that he would be chasing after his run away bride one day! I can just picture his horrified expression once he realizes I'm serious! Anyway, the first few chapters were HILARIOUS! And no one can say that Ian is a quitter. Or that he would let something like a sense of self-preservation stop him from getting what he wants. And he wants Veritas.

After the events of the previous book I learned not to underestimate Ian's intelligence but despite that I was surprised at how astute he is when it comes to emotional traumas. I know I shouldn't be surprised based on what I know about his past but still when he drops the clown act and talks with Veritas about her issues with her 'other half' and the roots of her semi-split personality I was blown away. It was one of the most powerful scenes in the book and believe me the competition was stiff.

While Ian did shine extremely brightly it was Veritas who showed the most character growth. Ian doesn't really change throughout the book. It's more like he sheds layers of his armor and finally lets us see the real Ian. Veritas on the other hand has so many unresolved and unacknowledged issues that being forced to even examine them makes her change and grow. She's so repressed emotionally it's a wonder she hadn't exploded. being with Ian has changed her dramatically as you would see when you get to the final few chapters and see her make a very un-Veritas like choice. She's finally embracing not only Ariel but her 'other half' and the combination of the three personalities is fascinating. Learning more about her past, her lineage and meeting her

This will be a shorter review so I don't risk spoiling too much for you!!

Wicked Bite is the second book in the newest trilogy "Night Rebel" and this series features our favorite joker of the group.,....Ian. After falling in love with the first book, "Shades of Wicked" I was so eager to get into this book and I have to say that this book just didn't disappoint in any way. This story is full of all the epic feels that you would come to expect from this author and your desire to see Ian have his own powerful story. I will say though that the feeling of this story is different from the other books in the Night Huntress World but just as superb just unique from the others. There is something in the telling of Ian and Veritas' story that is so empowering in many ways. Their story is so relatable in some ways. There are so many fun discoveries that we are brought to reality with and what a thrilling ride it is. Ian and Veritas go on a stunning adventure with many roadblocks along the way and what a cliffhanger. Now, this is the type of cliffhanger that unlike that previous book.....our pair is still together but there is some tension on what is going to happen in book three. These two just NEVER get a break do they??!! But they are solid and are true fighters and see how unified they become in this story and I was there for it 100%!! If you loved the first book then you will have a fantastic time seeing Ian and Veritas continue their adventure!!!

Wow. Wow. Wow. This was hot.

All jokes aside, I seriously can't remember the last time I read a decent vampire (or supernaturalish) novel, so kudos to the author for doing such a great job bringing these characters to life. The storyline that was engaging and engrossed me enough in the read nearly left me speechless, the dynamic relationship between Veritas and Ian was superb and their connection was swoonworthy. Just knowing that she meant something even after all his memories were erased showcased that and was further proven by their intimate scenes (prince albert, anyone?). So don’t miss out on this great supernatural paranormal novel filled with action, actual plot and storyline (bless), hot vampires, and oh so steamy chemistry. But… yes there is a but! Please note that this obviously isn’t a standalone, so definitely check out book one of the series to catch up on Veritas and Ian journey in defeating Dagon and rekindling a nearly diminish relationship.

“I hoped my last thoughts were of Ian. I wanted to remember his cocky grin, his quick wit, his bone-deep loyalty and his ferocious courage. Most of all, I wanted to relive what I’d felt when I was in his arms. I’d never before felt so completely exposed yet wholly accepted. Cherished. Maybe even loved, if we’d had more time . . .”

“Once, I thought the most awful thing I’d heard was Vlad’s witchy wife cursing me to fall for someone who insisted on monogamy. I must not have heard the part where she added that the object of my affection would also have an enraging set of scruples combined with insane protective instincts that led to repeated suicidal tendencies!”

“I know all the best places to evade the law. Be like a vacation for you. You’ll love it.”

The first few chapters are the best: we have Ian, who remembers nothing about his time with Veritas except that she's important to him, trying to force her to acknowledge him as she dodges him for his own safety. That involves going to entertaining lengths - such as threatening to sue the Vampire Council. I'll always be here for a hero doing wild things as he's chasing down the heroine.

Unfortunately, once they're back together again, the plot becomes the messy rabbit hole that's now the usual Frost fare. The repeated use of the same villain is grating, and Ian and Veritas simply don't have enough chemistry to carry me along without noticing.

Chaotic and mid.

In contrast to Frost's other heroines, Veritas does not really have a distinct personality, or, at least, very little presence. There is too much going on with her identity (beyond just the dual-nature conundrum) that her character comes off as poorly developed; she's Veritas, she's Ariel, she's a vampire, she's a demigod, she's 4,000 years old, she's a Law Guardian, she's a secret altruist witch. By this point in your life you should at least have more substance beyond just 'titles'. I don't know what it is or if anything I am saying here makes sense, but generally I couldn't relate or empathize. Veritas is powerful but boooring.

The plot is both dull and chaotic. In contrast to the last book, the Dagon arc is no longer compelling. And whatever is going on at the end, abruptly introducing yet more supernatural beings and lore--it's just messy and unnecessary.

Cat's library conversation with Veritas--while one of the most interesting moments in the book--made me so upset because it reminded me how incredible the Night Huntress series is and emphasized how tedious this series is in comparison.

The only thing I found interesting was Veritas coming to terms with her identity.
As typical of Frost's books, everything comes back to trauma. Veritas is forced to confront the long lasting shame and self-fear instilled by a beloved parental figure, and it's an understandably painful experience.

"Fear can make people do terrible things, even to the ones they love," Ian replied in a softer tone. "You know that. You just can't bring yourself to admit it when it comes to Tenoch. Makes you feel disloyal, and that's just the beginning. When you realize it was Tenoch who was wrong and not you, you have to confront the fact that you stuffed half of yourself into a cage merely to appease the fears of a man who should have loved you unconditionally because that is a parent's bloody job."

Getting into the dirty details--because it is that kind of book--the sex scenes in this book seem more consistent with Ian's reputation than in Shades of Wicked. Still kind of tame, but bothered me a lot about the first Night Rebel book given the reputation Frost built up for him over the 14+ books in this universe. A worthy effort. I can kind of buy Ian and Veritas as a couple now.

Most importantly, Silver is still an adorable, precious little angel. I would willingly read an entire chapter just about that floof.

After I finish the series or if I eventually re-read, I might feel differently. At this point, I'm just thankful there's only one Night Rebel book remaining.

ARC from Edelweiss

Wicked Bite is the second book in Jeaniene Frost’s Night Rebel series, and having the loved the first book, I assumed I was in for a good read with this one. But I was letdown, and it reminded me that Jeaniene Frost, even within a series, is so hit or miss for me.

This book begins with an Ian and Veritas separation, but it doesn’t really last long, because they reunite fairly quickly, as a main character can’t be without her prop for long, right? I’m not going to sugar coat it - I found this book so annoying. The biggest issue for me was how quickly Veritas essentially turned into Cat 2.0, only hating THAT monstery half of herself didn’t work here. Cat was inexperienced and young, so I was able to buy and even enjoy that story arc for her. She really needed Bones to help her sort out the truth about her vampire nature, and by extension, vampires in general. It doesn’t work with a character who has so much living under her belt, nor is it endearing. And the fact that she viewed the two parts of herself as almost separate entities was so odd every time it was presented. Which I think made it feel really contrived. Also, there was zero growth in Veritas and Ian’s romance or relationship here, which I guess makes sense since Ian had no agency. Like I mentioned before, he was a prop for Veritas in this book, and to have loved Ian since he first appeared in the Night Huntress series, this was so disappointing to me.

The appearance of Cat and Bones in this book, who I really love, just annoyed me here. It felt so unnecessary, and maybe because very little happened I couldn’t enjoy it. On the upside (I guess,) some readers will enjoy the ‘typical men’ thoughts that constantly pop up in Veritas’ thoughts. Again, those are just annoying and feel like they’re there to appease a certain audience.

I know this isn’t a stellar review - has any review I’ve ever written lived up to its title so much? - and you’re probably thinking there’s no way I’ll be picking up the next book, but you’d be wrong. Like I mentioned before, even the Night Huntress series had its hit or misses for me, and I’m assuming Wicked Bite is just a blip in the road. So yes, I will be reading the next book. But I’ll be crossing ALL THE THINGS first.

After Shades of Wicked finished the way it did, I felt a little off balance heading into Wicked Bite in more ways than one. I loved that book so then the book lover stress sets in of will book two live up to the first one, will a certain situation be a plus or minus, and oh please, please, let me continue to see the irreverent, rakish Ian shine. I read it fast and barely came up for air. And, whoosh, the gut-punch of a cliffhanger leading into book three. Thank goodness I am reading these late and don't have to wait for a new release to pick it up.

So, Veritas the little law guardian with some big secrets revealed moves on alone to fulfill the tasks set before her when she asked a huginormous favor to change that final life event for Ian. But, to her surprise, the supposedly memory-wiped Ian doesn't move on. He's on her trail. Love makes people a little crazy and definitely has them not always thinking clearly because Veritas makes one of the classic mistakes, for an ancient being who supposedly has seen it all, and she tries to keep Ian in the dark and protect him by taking on the big chores 'for his own good'.

Ha, Ian might not know the whole score, but sexy man isn't having any of that and he pins her down and shows that he can do just fine in his own right, thank you very much.

Some further reveals for them both come and one in Veritas' side turns out to be a whopper and will drive things into the third book because of course this pair achieve the impossible and still their is something bigger and badder on their to-do list.

We have a Night Huntress world crew reunion who back Ian and Veritas and I'd like to think the gang are starting to catch on to what Mencheres knew all along- Ian is one of the good guys under all that unlawful and wild personality and he's got some serious power punch now. Blech on that vampire council. Interesting new characters to add to the mix.

I've been somewhat flippant in the review so far, but I have to admit that I wasn't happy with Veritas for the longest time and I felt their were some draggy moments in the early half. There are some thoughts swirling around in my mind that I hope don't turn out to be true when we get into book three. But, that said, this was a fab read and I am excited to see what comes next.

I'm disappointed to give this rating, especially after reading and enjoying the Night Huntress series so much. But having read every book in the Night Huntress series and some spin-offs, I couldn't shake the feeling of repetition.
The same pattern of reckless decisions leading to drama, without communication between the main characters, felt stale. Instead of seeing the complexity of age-old beings, it felt more like watching a high school romance.

With each new book, i felt like the formula remained unchanged, making the characters feel recycled and the relationships shallow. The constant escalation of mythology, introducing new creatures and powers, lacked meaningful consequences, resulting in a narrative that felt repetitive and lacking depth. But at least in the Night Huntress books I really loved the main characters.

Overall it’s not a super bad book, i liked some things but it just felt shallow and the MC's didn’t act the age they had (hundreds/thousands years). Also, even though it the same formula in all the books I really enjoyed and connected with the original series (cat and bones's) much more. I will search for spoilers about the next and last book bc unfortunately I will not be reading it.
