“The minister, Mahfud MD, said the government needed to ensure the security of 267 million Indonesian citizens by keeping the fighters out of the country.”
While Western countries dither and litigate and welcome back returning jihadis, majority-Muslim Indonesia has its priorities straight and does what needs to be done.
“Indonesia Will Not Take Back Nationals Who Joined Islamic State: Minister,” Reuters, February 11, 2020:
BOGOR, Indonesia — Indonesia has decided not to take back nearly 700 of its nationals who left home to join Islamic State in Syria and other countries, the chief security minister said on Tuesday.
The minister, Mahfud MD, said the government needed to ensure the security of 267 million Indonesian citizens by keeping the fighters out of the country….

Not really, he is just following one of the islam ideology’s precepts which is that of course they cannot repatriate them since that would not be expanding the ideology’s grip outside where it is established.
The point of that refusal is to force the islam ideology to grow.

@Student of History
You pointed out an interesting idea:
The ‘hijra has its purpose outside the land of islam. And Indonesia doesn’t want them inside islam, but outside of it in order to render it more effective on the land of the infidel.

But surely Minister Mohammed Mahfud – himself a Muslim from the world’s most populous Muslim country – must be worried about being labelled an Islamophobe?
mortimer says
Yes, Aussie has it … Minister Mohammed Mahfud has all the symptoms of Islamophobia.
mortimer says
Robert Spencer identifies the issue ” Muslim-majority Indonesia has its priorities straight and does what needs to be done.” Indonesia refuses the burden of policing EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TERRORISTS.
Financially speaking, each and every jihadist will add tens of thousands of dollars to police budgets every year.
Furthermore, Indonesia’s Muslim leaders KNOW what it would take to deprogram jihadists … namely, to entirely destroy their faith in Islam … and THEY ARE UNWILLING TO DO THAT. So they refuse to take them back. Governments are unwilling to deprogram Muslims out of Islam. That would be the end of jihadism.
The only good news here is that many jihadists become OVER-SATURATED with Islam, and acquire SALAFI BURNOUT. They then take THEMSELVES out of Islam in order to recover from emotional exhaustion.
Finally, LET’S CONSIDER THIS WELL: MUSLIM-MAJORITY COUNTRIES DON’T WANT TO HAVE JIHADISTS! So, why would Western countries want them? It’s madness to accept hundreds and thousands of jihadists into Western countries. They cannot be trusted.
The UK top cops admitted they cannot follow all of the jihadists in UK or prevent them from returning to terrorism. Western countries need new laws to prevent jihadists from ever returning.

You wrong mr. mortimer. We do refuse that ISIS. 80% Indonesia citizen refused it. Last time isis member comeback to our country he pass deradicalization program, then after it they bomb the church. Islamic intolerance is one thing and common here, but ISIS are something else evil like here, even for the muslim. Hope u informed the situations here.

Fear Not, most Indonesians embrace Islam, and the Caliphate is a core tenet of Islam.

i myself not muslim and worriying about the raise of,intolerance , radicals mind in indonesia. Right now the condition of indonesia islamic majority is at intolerance stage about non muslim, only about 10-30% following caliphate dreams, 10-20% Isis simpaty secretly, and 15% for about crossing from intolerance heading to majority tirani over minority religious. Cases againist church, and other religious house hikes higher. Politician is the one lit the fire. I think we are heading to another big riots in next years. Current goverment had so many trouble with this islamic intolerances minds. Hope u informed about this.
Just Venting says
Mort:
I suspect that the reason the isis groupies are not welcome back is that the ruling elites in Indonesia realize that these “true believers” truly believe that the country’s rulers are not true muslims. As a result, the ruling oligarchs will be among the first the holy warriors would march out to chop chop square after the Friday sermon if the “radicals” get up enough support to have an iran style coup.

The issue that you always hear about when dealing with the scum who travelled over to join ISIS and now want to return and pollute our countries is that you can’t leave people (who we were foolish enough to give citizenship) stateless. That is the case here in Australia at any rate when you hear this issue discussed. So my question is, where do the people that Indonesia won’t take back live the rest of their stinking lives? Do they stay forever in refugee camps? I believe they should be left to rot away in refugee camps and certainly should not be taken back to any of our countries. But we always hear that people can’t be left stateless and therefore we have to take them back. I’m not sure about this leaving people stateless concept. I’m certain most people in Australia do not want these people to be allowed to return, although I suppose some people would say the children (taken by their parents to join ISIS) might need to be taken back.
gravenimage says
As you note, Tim, Muslims themselves don’t care about such issues.
tim gallagher says
Yes, gravenimage, that’s what struck me. Indonesia just decides that they’re not taking back any of these potentially dangerous people, whereas our countries seem to get tied up in knots trying to figure out whether we can revoke the citizenship of these former ISIS scum and leave them stateless. I suppose it is generally nice to be part of a civilised country, but sometimes being too nice and caring about the rights of people like the former ISIS creeps puts us at too much risk. I’ve seen the former ISIS women in camps in Syria or some such country and I was thinking that a country such as Syria would say, at some point, we are not paying for the food and refugee camp staff to keep these ISIS vermin alive any longer (ie the ones Indonesia intends to leave there forever). I suppose the UN would then step in and pay for the ongoing camps to keep these former ISIS fighters alive. Or maybe the UN already pays for those camps where the vile ISIS women live. I wasn’t sure who pays for the camps. Indonesia isn’t a very civilised country, but I think they are right on this issue. As the report says, the safety of the vast majority of their people is what matters. I know, in Australia, they talked about how they’d have to monitor the returning ISIS people, no doubt,at huge expense to the taxpayer.

Phil Copson says
For Indonesia this is a Win:Win situation – they get rid of the jihadis, and the jihadis go West and islamise the rest of the world; what’s not to like from Indonesia’s point of view ?
tim gallagher says
I agree, Phil. And maybe the former ISIS fighters that Indonesia won’t take back will actually be taken in by European and other countries. Hopefully, they won’t be that foolish. I’m sure you are right about Indonesia. It is right next door to Australia and Muslims used to fly down to Indonesia and then be ferried across to Australia by Indonesian people smugglers. Australia ended up having to keep quite a few of those invaders. I’m sure Indonesia loved that outcome. I’m sure they, like all Muslim countries, are always aiming to spread poisonous islam to every place on earth.

……………………..
Indonesia knows that these pious Muslims would consider the government “insufficiently Islamic”, even with the Shari’ah state of Aceh.
This is the case with most Muslim countries–they are not actually anti-Jihad; they just don’t want Muslims waging Jihad *against them*.

I’m pleased to find myself in full agreement with this post of yours, gravenimage.
I go through stages of how to envision the bits and pieces of the truth that I collect like shells on the beach and try to assemble what I find into a useful picture at least until I gain an even better few pieces which makes the picture fuller and closer to telling the truthiest truths…
This story reminds me of an airline VIP lounge divided into three sections.
The “No Smoking” section. “The Captain’s Lounge” area where casual smoking is permitted. And the smoking section where anything goes, smoke what you like and as much as you like, called, Blue Haze,” where even some casual smokers cant stand for long because the air is so clouded and concentrated with thick, acrid blue smoke..
Even though the Non Smokers can empathize with the Captain’s Lounge passengers who want to keep heavy smokers out, that doesn’t mean that the Captain’s Lounge members are welcome in the No Smoking section.
Just because we can empathize with Indonesia does not mean that we should welcome Indonesians to America.

Islamophobia or not these people joined ISIS in a suicide mission in the name islam. The minister does not want to see radicals coming back into his country & jeopardize the social fabric & peaceful atmosphere. Indonesia eventhough being a muslim country is quite moderate in its outlook. Islamophobia is the latest word created by upper class so called intellectuals pushed through the throat of already fearful & financially unstable working class.
gravenimage says
Wilfred, Indonesia is not all that “moderate”. Persecution of non-Muslims is rife, as are horrors like child marriage.
And Aceh in Indonesia is as full Shari’ah state:
Here are a couple of recent stories:
“Indonesia: Multiple arrests of couples on Valentine’s Day, ‘These social illnesses must be prevented'”

There are, of course, many more.

I am puzzled by these suddenly stateless persons. No they are citizens from various countries who have travelled to two other countries, Syria and Iraq with the intention of creating another country in the form of a caliphate. Their actions are crimes against those countries and they have the right to prosecute according to their laws. Being stateless is irrelevant.Destroying your passport is irrelevant.
If they are not executed they can look forward to living in communities, who at best regard them with dislike.
