I cannot thank Saffron enough for this clever, heartbreaking book of love, loss, forgiveness, acceptance and growth. It’s one of my favourite reads this year and that is a huge call. I desperately hope everyone gets to read this story as it’s more than just words but a gift of goodness and strength.
The power Saffron weaves in this remarkable tale is mind-blowing. It captures your heart with all the feels of young innocence and take you to the bottomless pit of rage, hurt and acceptance. Do you remember that feeling: that first hurt, first fall, first heartbreak? Well, this book will make you remember!
The characters’ chemistry is captured in waves of desperation, anger and belonging to something greater than God. Abel and Pixie were meant to tell their tale of love. It’s nothing you have read before because love is not all about roses and petals. I love the real pain you feel, the suffering, the anguish. But beyond that, there is this undeniable power of courage and faith and boy do these characters have it in spades.
Read this book; it’s not for the faint-hearted as some themes might trigger something uncomfortable, but it’s true and real and raw which makes it worth every hurdle these characters face. True genius, Saffron.

Gods & Monsters Kindle Edition
He was an artist. She was his muse.
To everyone in town, Abel Adams was the devil's spawn, a boy who never should have been born. A monster. To twelve-year-old Evie Hart, he was just a boy with golden hair, soft t-shirts and a camera. A boy who loved taking her picture and sneaking her chocolates before dinner. A boy who made her feel special.
Despite her family's warnings, she loved him in secret for six years. They met in empty classrooms and kissed in darkened church closets. Until they couldn't. Until the time came to choose between love and family, and Evie chose Abel.
Because their love was worth the risk. Their love was the stuff of legend.
But the thing about legends is that they are cautionary tales. They are made of choices and mistakes. And for Abel and Evie, the artist and the muse, those mistakes come in the form of lights, camera, sex.

After reading Saffron A Kent’s The Unrequited and loving the way she represented the love story between two seemingly unlikeable characters, I was intrigued to read her upcoming - and now available - release, Gods & Monsters. The teasers did a brilliant job of not giving away this coming of age story, a romance between two people who shouldn’t have fallen in love but who’s connection was too powerful to be ignored.
Abel comes to Evie’s town one afternoon - moving in next door - and brings with him a past that their small town hasn’t forgotten and yet Evie is drawn to him in a way she can’t explain. What happens over a number of years is a love affair that has to be hidden, a fight against busy-bodies and family and eventually, a chance for Abel and Evie to finally have everything they ever wanted.
For me, the second part of this story really dragged. The first part is pure poetry - with gorgeous language and beautiful descriptions of Abel and Evie falling in love despite the odds.
“Abel Adams is a god. Because only gods can stop time and freeze moments, if they want to. Only gods can do what he does with a camera.”
But the second part is long, dragged out and takes a while to really pack a punch. I kept waiting for something to happen - a wait I was impatient for - but when everything explodes, it’s almost worth the wait. The third and final part is exactly what I wanted this book to be. It’s heartfelt, painful, full of anger and learning and beauty. I couldn’t put it down from that point. I had to know what happened and it was here that Saffron really had Abel and Evie shine. The ending was what made the second part bearable, because it is all kinds of emotionally charged, incredibly written words that will have you holding your breath until the last few pages. That is until I realised that the big incident that sparks Evie and Abel's downfall is never really acknowledged again... and it's a power imbalance in their relationship that really needs apologising for.
Evie and Abel are one hell of a couple and I’ll be forever grateful I experienced their relationship through this book. Gods and Monsters can maybe coexist after all.

Well - this book !!! I have read one other book by this author which is The Unrequited and I literally swooned and fell in love with that story that was never to be forgotten. So when this one popped up I was like a kid on Christmas day waiting to open the biggest suprise of all. Let me tell you I was not disappointed in the least. I am not going to even try to not gush over the writing of Ms Kent, the way she writes is poetic and beautifully raw with so much emotion invested in her characters they move off the page, they come alive in your mind, in your heart and eventually they consume your soul.
This book is intense and will not be for everyone's taste. It has many layers that you will eventually peel back so you can peek inside and find the delights this book holds. Told in three separate parts; the first two being Evie's and the last part Abel's, this story starts when they are very young, when they first set eyes upon each other, Evie being twelve and Abel fourteen. immediately I could feel the connection these characters felt and although the relationship grew slowly, it was intense, awkward, passionate and breathe taking at times.
Abel is coming into a new home with his uncle after the death of his parents, he is full of deep seated anger and is a sad lonely boy whom Evie is drawn to like a magnet. Her free spirit appeals to Abel, she is a rebel at heart but her parents religion and strictness with their only daughter crushes her free will which holds her back from what she really would like to express.
This is a coming of age story that deals with lots and lots of feelings and emotions and situations that these pair of troubled teens find themselves in, and as they grow - we the reader goes along for the ride and what a ride it is. There were times when I was reading this story when I was completely overwhelmed, times when I felt angry towards Abel, times when I just wanted to wrap my arms around him and pour every bit of love into that beautiful damaged soul of his, times when I held my breathe, times when I cried for them both. Every feeling this book evoked in me was worth every minute of my time.
" They don't understand my Abel. They don't understand that when a boy with enough heat to burn the sun falls in love with a girl, he torches the whole world. They don't get his intensity, his passion "
" I want you, Pixie. I want you in my life and if I have to sell everything I own, even my soul, I'll do it. My Mum used to say people with no souls are monsters. I don't mind being one if I get to keep you . And I'm keeping you, Evie" A current runs through me when he says my real name.
" I'm f****** Keeping you. Even God can't snatch you away from me "
Gah this book !!! I'm in awe of this author and her writing and the passion she pours into her work.
An absolute must read, not to be missed !!!!

Miss Saffron did it again!! I went in blind with no expectations, but I wasn't ready for how consuming the story is.
Abel and Evie, the artist and his muse, are the definition of intense. Since they met, they fell for each other and as time passes, each day their love becomes stronger and more passionate.
If you want a different storyline, with intense characters and a consuming love story, I would highly recommend you to pick this one!!

WONDERFUL STORY!

Sweet, sweet young and true love. This story is about two young people who defy the odds and the prejudices that people put on societal norms. Abel, son of parents who "sinned" by falling in love even though they were cousins, was an angry young man when he met Evie. Evie, just 13 to his 15, ignored everyone's opinions and befriended him...in secret. Despite abuse by her mother, always hidden on Evie's body, Evie was a loving young girl. Inevitably this young couple runs away to be together after her parents drag her away from Abel's apartment. Abel is taken to jail and beaten. Evie was locked in her room...a room with bars on the window.
Their relationship is rife with love but also lots of anger that drives a wedge between them. Evie runs from Abel and what follows is an awakening for both of them. Add to that...Evie is pregnant.
A heartwarming story of young and true love. Well worth the read!

Review Gods & Monsters by Saffron A. Kent✨
.
𝗔 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗯𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗴𝗲, 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗥𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗝𝘂𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘀𝘁. I am determined to get through all of Saffron’s backlist because she is just PHENOMENAL. Every read by her I have fallen in love with. She takes you to a different world with every read and you can’t help but feel so immersed in the story that it’s all you can think about. I had no idea what to expect going into this novel, the angst, the passion, the heartbreak, the love story, I was on a rollercoaster that I never wanted to get off of.
.
Our Heroine Evie was so strong, beautiful, & caring she has a fierce love and protectiveness of whom she lets inside her heart. When she first meets our Hero Abel she is immediately drawn to him. Why is he considered the towns devil child? When he doesn’t seem so bad at all. He seems lost, and lonely. When Evie and Abel form a friendship they must keep it a secret, so they meet in her treehouse and sneak glances at eachother at school, but slowly as they become older they start to look at eachother in a whole new way and those butterflies when she first saw him at 12 years old are slowly now starting to make sense.

Our Hero Abel was broken, lonely, possessive, and misunderstood. He has such a huge heart but because of his parents he was cast aside to be forgotten. He then meets the adorable 12 year Evie who shows him love, compassion and friendship. Evie means everything to him, but her family and the town will stop at nothing to tear them apart. That is until they take matters into their own hands and leave that town in there review mirror.
