Great Utah ShakeOut 2024

Prepare to duck, cover, and hold on! The Great ShakeOut is coming to UVU. 

What?

It’s an annual statewide earthquake preparedness drill held by the state of Utah to practice earthquake safety protocol. At UVU, we want to be prepared. 

When?

April 18, 2024, at approximately 10:15am. 

How?

Students, staff, and faculty are invited to participate in the short protective actions (drop, cover, hold on). If on campus, you will hear an overhead announcement. The UVU community will also receive a warning on computer screens that will remind you to take protective actions as if there were an earthquake. 

During this year’s Great ShakeOut you may also see our emergency management team performing a larger emergency exercise. Do not be alarmed if you see simulated injuries and emergencies, or emergency service teams on campus. This is all part of an effort to be ready to keep you safe in an actual emergency situation.

UVU Delays Classes on Wednesday, Feb. 22 Until 10 a.m.

All Utah Valley University campus facilities will be open today, Feb. 22, after 10 a.m. However, if the weather makes travel unsafe, students are advised to check with their instructors to determine the status of their classes. Faculty may choose to teach remotely or in person while providing online learning options for students negatively impacted by the storm. Employees who feel unsafe to travel should communicate with their supervisors about remote work arrangements.

When?

April 21, 2022, at approximately 10:15am. 

How?

Students, staff, and faculty are invited to participate in the short protective actions (drop, cover, hold on). If on campus, you will hear an overhead announcement. The UVU community will also receive a warning on computer screens that will remind you to take protective actions as if there were an earthquake.

Great Utah ShakeOut 2021

Prepare to duck, cover, and hold on! The Great ShakeOut is coming to UVU.

What? It’s an annual statewide earthquake preparedness drill held by the state of Utah to practice earthquake safety protocol. A year ago, we experienced an earthquake that reminded everyone that such events are a reality in our area. At UVU, we want to be prepared.

When? April 15, 2021, at approximately 10 a.m.

How? If on campus, you will hear an overhead announcement. The UVU community will also receive texts and a warning on computer screens that will remind you to take protective actions as if there were an earthquake. This year, UVU employees in Facilities will also perform post-earthquake building assessment training. They will check buildings looking for structural damage as if there had been real shaking.

Campus Weather Alert

UVU campuses will remain open today, and all classes will meet as scheduled. The decision was based on current and projected weather conditions provided by the National Weather Service. However, we understand current conditions may have made travel dangerous for some. Please take necessary precautions to stay safe, including live-stream and remote learning/work options and utilizing mass-transit options where possible.

We ask faculty and staff to work with students taking in-person courses affected by the weather and that departments accommodate faculty and staff unable to travel to campus.

Faculty members who cannot safely travel to campus should reach out to students enrolled in face-to-face classes via canvas to alert them of any necessary modifications. Otherwise, all face-to-face, online, and live-stream-only courses will continue as usual.

UVU Reports No Damage from March 18 Earthquake

An earthquake was felt in Utah just after 7 a.m. this morning. The earthquake measured at a magnitude of 5.7, according to Utah’s geological society. Utah Valley University Police and facility staff immediately began a survey of campus. No damage has been reported at this time. We will inform the UVU community of any additional information as needed.
