In 2017, several authors expressed interest in writing stories for a theoretical “Pennyverse” (author Penny Reid’s Universe) in some capacity (whether that be writing a canon story about new characters within the Pennyverse, writing a continuation of a current couple’s story within the Pennyverse, writing a fanfic in an alternate timeline using Pennyverse characters, etc.) We collated the data we received, marinated in it, and created this collaborative business model.
Smartypants Romance is a small publisher that is indie-minded. It is a business whose mission is:
1) To be self-sustaining.
2) To be value added to: a) the authors and professionals (support personnel) who are published by/within/work for the SRU, b) the Penny Reid Brand, and c) the romance community and world at large.
3) To set an example of best practices, inclusion, representation, professionalism, mentorship, and craft-excellence.
4) To be drama free and efficient.
Jiffy Kate is the joint pen name for Jiff Simpson and Jenny Kate Altman. They're co-writing besties who share a brain. They also share a love of cute boys, stiff drinks, and fun times.
Their first published book, Finding Focus, was released in November 2015. Since then, they’ve continued to write what they know—southern settings full of swoony heroes and strong heroines.
You can find them on most social media outlets at @jiffykate, @jiffykatewrites, or @jiffsimpson and @jennykate77.

Gunnar and Frankie make for such a wonderful story. Frankie is a nurse, she doesn’t get attached to people easily, and well, Gunnar (an MMA fighter) gets attached from the start. Put these two together and the chemistry flies off the page.
From the opening line I was hooked. I love a good opposites attract romance. Throw in some emotional moments mixed with some great humour and this book thrives. Another amazing addition to the Penny Reid Universe, and such a wonderful book to start the spring launch!
Beef Cake is the story of Frankie and Gunnar Ericksen, and is a story of love, trust, letting go of the past and moving forward. It has both new characters and well-loved familiar faces and has a storyline that will make you laugh, smile and indeed bring a tear to your eye. I love that the authors could bring Frankie’s vulnerability and her day to day set routine to life and make her a character I was cheering for from the first page. Her history had me longing for her own personal HEA, with this story the perfect balance of ups and downs as we follow along Frankie and Gunnar’s journey to love. We are also faced with Frankie’s own personal journey of growth and facing her demons.
Gunnar is Cage Ericksen’s younger brother, who we met in Jiffy Kate’s first Donner Bakery Book - Stud Muffin. Also an MMA fighter, he is looking to his older brother for guidance and training, but could it be his career that actually turns Frankie away?
A story for new readers as well as those familiar with Green Valley, I recommend Beef Cake to fans of contemporary romance who enjoy some angst, sweetness and steam, and a story that will pull on your heartstrings but also make you smile, and at times laugh out loud. Jiffy Kate are authors who engage their readers with well-written stories, romance and steam and characters you know will take their own place in your heart. Beef Cake does just this, and it’s a 5 star read for me. I did receive an early copy of this book, thank you to the authors and Social Butterfly PR. This is an honest review and I do apologise for it being a few days late.

Beef Cake is the second of the Fighting for Love series but certainly is a stand alone. We get to meet the dreamy younger Erickson brother, Gunnar. He’s charming, sweet, competitive, and reminds me so much of my own husband with his patience for the woman he loves.
Frankie, our stoic FMC, breaks me every way from Sunday! She is one of the best characters I have read in a while. She’s strong and wanting and somewhat lost. She is the epitome hope that’s drowning in agony. Her character development left me shattered but longing for an HEA.
Gunnar is the shining light in the deepest of darkness for our Frankie. And yes, I’m saying our because I felt right there with her and Gunnar. Theirs is definitely a battle of love we all want to fight for. And Jiffy Kate captured every moment of their battle beautifully with every moment of sadness and love.
Be caught by love and a Beef Cake by reading this wonderfully passionate story.

Gunnar Erickson is an MMA fighter that comes to Green Valley to train at his brother Cage's (from Stud Muffin gym. Gunnar may participate in a violent sport as his job, but Gunnar the person is a gentle, thoughtful, patient, educated man. I adored him from the start, but I'm kind of a sucker for a big strong teddy bear of a man!
Frankie is the kind of girl I really want to root for. She initially comes across cold, but you quickly realize that she has good reasons for being the way she is. Frankie literally devotes all of her waking hours to helping other people - she's a nurse, she helps make sure her reclusive mother has everything she needs then spends time selling her mom's stuff (jams, honey, etc) at the weekly farmers market, and she volunteers at a women's shelter with what time she has left. Despite all of that though, her life is largely devoid of any personal relationships except those with her mother and the lady who runs the women's shelter. Frankie had a traumatic childhood (so much so that she's blanked out the majority of it, though her body and nightmares seem to remember more than her brain does) and is consequently reluctant to really form any relationships, especially of a romantic nature.
I absolutely loved Gunnar and Frankie's story. There was more depth to the story than I expected, but it was done in a way that kept the light and happy feel overall that I expect from the Smartypants books. Frankie definitely had some heavy "stuff" to deal with in learning the truth of her past, coping with all of that trauma, and learning to trust and lean on someone else. Despite all of that, though, there was no unnecessary drama here (thank you), and the authors managed to inject enough humor and lightheartedness that the heavier stuff didn't weigh the story down.

Frankie is such a wonderful heroine. She's strong yet vulnerable underneath, she's complicated yet wants to be loved and accepted, she's smart yet very guarded, and she's a good person that just wants to help those in need.
Gunnar is Cage's youngest brother who has followed in his brother's shadow all his life. He comes to Green Valley to train with Cage to be a better MMA fighter. He is such an amazing hero!! He may be a huge, intimidating looking man but he is such a loving, sweet, loyal, likable person underneath!! He calls himself the "glass half full" kinda guy.
He and Frankie meet in her ER after a freak accident in the gym. Sparks fly from the minute their eyes meet, literally!!! I loved their love story because it wasn't "instant" love that lead to a remarkable relationship. There was so much that they both had to work through to get their HEA, and it was wonderful to watch. I feel like they are so much stronger because of everything they went through.
It was wonderful to revisit with Cage and Tempest, as well as meet new characters. It was great to be back in Green Valley too. This book was amazing and I highly recommend it to everyone!!! Jiffy Kate just get better with each book!
