Blend in. Stay quiet. Survive.
Fallon Blake is starting her senior year in a new town with the goal of sliding through to graduation unseen. Despite her attempts to lay low, she makes a snap decision to act when the king of Cherry Creek High School, Jesse Callaway, gets jumped at a party.
Now, fearing Fallon needs protection from the mess she threw herself into, Jesse refuses to let her recede back into the shadows. Little does he know, with each lingering glance, or brush of his hand, he is reigniting a fire within Fallon that burns her to the core. Every gentle touch scorches the scars on her fragile heart. As sparks fly between them, Fallon fights to snuff them out. How can she trust her own judgment when it failed her horrifically before? But when the past catches up with her, Fallon is left with two options. Confide in Jesse... or run.
Will Fallon break the vicious cycle of the past by taking a chance on the future? Or will fear torch any chance she and Jesse could have had?

"Why is it so hard for you to accept that people can be nice?"
"Because I’ve seen the ugly in this world."
4.5 stars
When Shadows Follow by Callie Rae is a New Adult, high school, suspense romance and is the first book in the Cherry Creek Series. Please note this book does end with a cliffhanger.
Fallon has decided to move to a new town in hopes of staying low and starting a fresh. Unfortunately for Fallon she makes a snap decision and saves the ‘king’ of Cherry Creek High, Jesse Callaway, from getting jumped. Now he refuses to let her go back to the shadows. But little does he know that Fallon past might just catch up with her, and she might just choose to run.
I loved this book! It was so well written, fast paced and angsty. Fallon is sassy as hell heroine and Jesse is a broody protective alpha. Not only did I adore the main characters but the all side characters as well.
If you loved Tijan’s Fallen Crest series then you’ll love this !!

This book has all the goods, the hot brooding guy, the vulnerable girl with all the baggage but a spine of steal, the great best friend and the baddies! And a cliff hanger!!!
Can't say I am mad about that, just makes me anticipate the next book that much more.
I am a little confused about the father at this stage, I am not really sure how he comes in to it all but I am hoping book 2 elaborates on that and I can't wait for more of these characters. Cason's just a babe, so hope there is more from him too.
Bring on book 2, When Shadows Fracture!!!

A definite pleasant surprise!
.
Holy heck. I loved this. This book is so relatable, angsty and tragically beautiful.
.
The plot. This plot is so well written it captivated and consumes you. I devoured this. There’s so much happening and so many hidden possibilities as to where and how the story goes. Just when you think you have it figured out there’s still so much unexplained and theories you come up with while your reading and something totally unexpected comes out of left field to dash them all away to keep you guessing. It definitely leaves you sitting at the edge of your seat.
.
Definitely a shocking moment in this book that I didn’t see coming at all. I knew there was something relating to a relationship but that?! Nope! Didn’t even think of that. I love this book. It leaves your heart heavy while also full of hope for the main characters. They deal with so much and the obstacles they face leaves you wanting them to come out stronger in the end.
.
Must admit how Fallon deals with certain things did annoy me but at the same time I couldn’t fault that I wouldn’t have reacted the same way which gave the book that genuine real life feel. Jesse, I absolutely live his character. He is definitely not your typical jock which I love. His character breaks the mould of what a typical jock should be. At first I thought his character was something completely different so to get a blend made him unique which I enjoyed.
.
The world of this book is so tangible that I found myself believing that this world existed to an extent and I’m here for it.
.
This book is a tragically beautiful, heartwarming read full of hope, finding your own strength and the meaning of living after tragedy. Definitely a fave of the year.

Beautifully written new adult, high school romance. Four and a half ⭐️
Lots of angst, drama and suspense thrown in, with relatable well developed characters and storyline. This was a pleasure to read.
Only love to hate moment is the cliffhanger, of course 😊. Looking forward to When Shadows Fracture.

I won't lie, I had tried to read When Shadows Follow previously but at the time, I was in a bit of a reading funk and had to put it down with the intention to give it another go later on. Well people, I am so glad that I gave this book another chance because I really enjoyed it!
I am really loving the upper YA type stories at the moment, so this was exactly the book for me!! It was so much like a teen romance movie and held my attention right until the very last page.
The storyline itself, was great! The drama, a little over the top for high school kids but lets be honest, ITS A BOOK. It's a fictional story! And a really good fictional story at that.
Fallon is a very strong FMC and what I loved most about her is that her strength wasn't shoved in your face. Yes, she spoke her mind and refused to take dirt thrown her way, but she still had a side of vulnerability to her. When we eventually get to hear her backstory, my heart broke and I felt the tears well at what she had been through.
And that cliffhanger!!!!! GIMME THE NEXT BOOK NOW!!! Ill see you all on the other side!
From what I have seen, this was a debut story for Callie Rae! What an incredible debut it was! Such a perfectly written story and I cannot wait to see what she writes for us in the future!

[book:When Shadows Follow|51486167] by [author:Callie Rae|19504511] is her debut novel and the first in the Cherry Creek series. A contemporary mature high school romance. Set in the world of Cherry Creek High School where one family runs the town and the school, the heroine of the story, Fallon, just wants to fly under the radar and finish high school with zero drama. That plan goes awry the moment she lands on the radar of Jesse Callaway, leader of the school and the young man who essentially runs the town. Having her plans to remain incognito shot out of the sky, Fallon finds herself gradually immersed in the the world of the Callaways. From rides to and from school, to joining them on their outings, to become more involved with Jesse himself. Fallon finds herself not minding so much until one day when her past comes crashing in to her present. With her two worlds collided Fallon is frightened and doesn't know where to turn and who to trust, but Jesse makes it clear he is on her team and will do what it takes to keep her safe. Well-written and well-paced with a stubborn hero that is swoon-worthy and a cliffhanger that will leave you on tenterhooks, this was a great read. Enjoy!

Amazing debut novel

I went to this book totally blind. Not having a clue what I was about to read. It came highly recommend by my friend.
I just can’t believe this a debut novel. I’m speechless, it was so bloody good. All I can say is I need to dive straight into book 2. I’m dying to know what happens next with these characters.

A Fantastic Debut | New Adult, Romantic Suspense
Reviewed in the United States on 13 April 2020Verified Purchase
Callie Rae has written an exciting novel here and I am so glad I took a chance on a new to me author. This book had everything I wanted: a new adult crowd, a brooding bad boy, and enough suspense to leave me intrigued. I didn’t know this would end in a cliffhanger and while I’m bummed that it did, I am really looking forward to seeing what happens next with Fallon and Jesse. Things just got REALLY dicey!
My first thoughts when reading this one is that it’s similar to Boys of Brayshaw High. Not in a sense that this book copies that plot because it DOESN’T, but because we have a new adult/young adult crossover with a demure heroine, an alpha/protective hero, some suspense, and secondary characters that completely imprint themselves on your heart. I loved these characters to pieces and want to shout it out to all new adult romances lovers ESPECIALLY if you’re a fan of the Brayshaw series by Meagan Brandy. I know there are many readers who look for similar books and this one right here is that.
Another thing I loved about this book is the underlying emotion that flows through the characters. It’s pretty clear early on that they all put on a front, acting as if they don’t have the weight of the world on their shoulders when in reality they DO. It makes perfect sense for their age group (thank you for writing a book that FITS with the age of the characters), and it shows us that deep down we are all facing (or have faced) demons. For Fallon it’s a pretty emotional secret that she’s hiding and the way it twists around the story is incredible. Callie did an amazing job with this! For Jesse it’s something closer to home… It will be interesting to see how his issues play out in the next one! **Crosses fingers that it’s coming SOON.**
All in all, this is an amazing debut and I enjoyed reading it immensely. I read it in a day as it’s just over 200 pages, and I was so invested in the book that I didn’t want to put it down! Obviously, I recommend this one!
