Millions of Americans disagreed. Pamela Geller and I defeated the Ground Zero Mosque project, leading massive rallies in lower Manhattan to show how many Americans thought it an insult to the memory of those killed on 9/11 to build a mosque at Ground Zero. Is there a Shinto shrine at Pearl Harbor? The 16-story mosque that was initially planned there was not built, despite concerted efforts by Bloomberg to derail our activities and to make sure the mosque got built. Bloomberg was beaten in the court of public opinion.

Biulding a mosque at the site of a “victory in a battle” is an Islamic tradition. Has been for over 1000 years.

From what I have learned about islam, the building of a mosque means that islam has conquered that area. islam wanted that mosque as symbol of victory over the U.S. We have too many mosques being put up in the U.S. Appeasement will not work. islam is not a religion but a political system. Gee…thanks Mike.

It’s no great big deal to stand up for human rights when they are the rights of the majority. A true test of a democracy is how it protects the rights of minorities and the disadvantaged.
I was and am against the building of the mosque so close to Ground Zero (it was to be a lot more than just a mosque) and every legal means to prevent it’s construction should have been used (including getting the area rezoned) but, as long as building the mosque at that location was legal where is the “treason” in supporting that right?
Wellington says
No treason de jure, Rarely, but such incredible bad judgement that, de facto, it amounts to treason.
Rarely says
It’s of paramount importance in a democracy that the rights of an individual or group can not be taken from them except by due process of law. We must support that right as a matter of principle especially when it is being exercised in a way in which we strongly oppose.
It’s one thing to oppose the building of the mosque at that location and quite another to oppose the right to do so. The converse is equally true.
mgoldberg says
It wasn’t opposing the right to build the mosque there. It was the gall to imagine that it was a good thing, a righteous thing, to do there.
When no mention is allowed examining the theology, the history of mosques, of Islam, anywhere, then building one where Jihadists destroyed lives, mega billions in property and livlihood, and muslims hailed the event of 9/11 as nothing less than an excuse to be biased against muslims, then the right to open the gates of analysis, of history and show that it indeed is an abomination hiding under the rights never granted to non muslims in muslim sharia nor muslim lands is indeed called to order. That you make it the smaller issue of whether or not they have a ‘right’ to build a mosque, is not the issue.
gravenimage says
Fine post, mgoldberg.
Wellington says
I did not in my 5:40 P.M. comment to you, Rarely, oppose the technical, legal right of such a mosque to be built but rather I was addressing the practical and common sense approach to this “issue,” partially encapsulated by yours truly by mentioning the de facto “reality” as opposed to the de jure “situation.”
After all, just as the American Constitution is not a suicide pact, neither should statutory law be. Or, as Teddy Roosevelt jocularly replied when asked about his going over the heads of Congress to get the Panama Canal built, “Hey, what’s the Constitution between friends?”
Don’t want to be impaled, now do we, by wokeness and only pure abstract application of the law? In other words, loosen up.
Marilyn Griffin says
But, doesn’t their desire to build a huge mosque at that specific location speak loudly about US muslims’ allegiance to the US? Obviously, any such allegiance ranks much lower than their allegiance to Islam and muslims. Any group would have known that ignoring that the perpetrators of 9/11 were all muslims but insisting on building a muslim mosque there would infuriate Americans; yet, they tried, and expected to get away with it, really a miracle they didn’t. Obviously, they are not, never will be, real, true Americans, but then, in my view, all Americans who supported that mosque or who support America making changes to appease and please muslims, are, also not true Americans.
mortimer says
Reply to Wellington: agree: it amounts to treason, but it is literally giving comfort to the enemies of the US. Bloomberg convinces them that Americans are naive and will not see the jihad coming. Bloomberg’s Pollyannish naivety emboldens the jihad-terrorists and encourages them to seek chinks in America’s armor.

Bloomberg can’t understand that Muslim supremacists see concessions as victories given by Allah. When people like Bloomberg help Islam, Muslims see it as a help to their political supremacism.

So did the Grandmothers from England and Scotland…..how much Bloomberg knew and who he believed . Much of the information during the Bloomberg time was silenced….as we know here, by the past three administrations. The money from the Middle east had influence in media….universities, hospitals, and they had patience and a long preparation stage getting the people in place, almost ingenious but moving to remove our faith and constitutional laws. “Never prouder”? Pleased as punch that Muslims from everywhere would have recognized that mosque, had it been built, as a sign of Infidel surrender. Fortunately Spencer and Geller mobilized a ferocious opposition.
Bloomberg understands none of that. His knowledge of Islam leaves a great deal — everything — to be desired. Here’s something he could and should do, now that he has more time, having given up his race for the presidency. He owes it to himself to read the Qur’an. He could start with a baker’s dozen of verses: 2:191-193, 3:110, 3:151,4:89, 5:51, 8:12, 8:60, 9:5, 9:29,47:4, 98:6. First a little, thence to more, sample all of Islam’s killing store. This prescription assumes that he may not be the hopeless idiot that many of the commenters above take him to be. If after reading the Qur’an — why is that so hard for our politicians to manage?– he continues to utter inanities, then consign him to the outer darkness. But perhaps he will give off signs of intelligent life.
Nearly twenty years after the 9/11 attacks, how many political figures in this country, or in Europe, have given sufficient — or any — attention to the Qur’an? Possibly Victor Orban in Hungary, Marine Le Pen in France, Matteo Salvini in Italy (Italy is a special case, because of the continuing influence of the late Oriana Fallaci, and the effect, too,of Magdi Allam, an Egyptian apostate who became a Christian and an Italian), Thilo Sarrazin in Germany, and several members of the AfD. In short, a handful.
Why so very few? This moan comes from a long way down.

I agree that Bloomberg is dismissive of the fanaticism of Muslims. About 15% of Muslims are fanatical and about 1% of Muslims are super-fanatics.
Bloomberg is unaware that ONE OUT OF SIX MUSLIMS IS A FANATIC. He doesn’t know that over 500, 000 are suicide-jihad-ready.
Bloomberg is CLUELESS about the size of the problem.
mortimer says
addendum: Bloomberg doesn’t realize the size of the jihad problem: almost 10 million Muslims worldwide (though not trained) are willing to join the jihad if asked. Someone merely has to recruit them. We saw the alacrity with which many young Muslims joined ISIS … the majority of jihadists in ISIS were well-educated young men from stable, prosperous families.
Bloomberg is clueless that Muslims see New York as THE BIG PRIZE that Islam needs to take over the world. New York is the political capital of the world, its economy and the UN.
Jihadists want to destroy and then conquer New York. Every little victory (such as a victory mosque) is evidence to these fanatics that ALLAH is helping the conquest of NYC and the USA.
Bloomberg is clueless that many of his business contacts in the Muslim world are jihad supporters.

Agree gravenimage, if he was “never prouder when he argued that Muslims had the right to build a mosque near the World Trade Center”, he would be by default never prouder of Islam that shows he was not aware of the Quran that obligates muslims to slaughter 3000 at the World Trade Center. and to see why they acted. I could defend that he investigated the mosques in NYC, however they laid low for a while and restrained their celebration and really couldn’t discuss or praise the event.in order to prevent exposure or backlash…although some did…But now it is 2020 and he restated his opinion so it shows he was not too curious to investigate this horrific act and relied only on the idea that no religion would ever approve, and he was right on one point it was not a normal religion as it claimed. His knowledge is in the financial world, that gained in relations with Saudi Arabia, inadequate knowledge of what is taught in the mosque, the origin of Islam and running for President requires a person who gets curious and digs deeper so it is exposed, so I am pleased he dropped out of race…..since his support for a mosque sent a message to the Islamic world this deception is working it all a go, we are not defeated yet. As the informed had to deal with the next administrations successes and high fives grins and coolness…it only made this event and Islam more intolerable.

This is surprising in two ways. [1] He thinks Muslim New Yorkers have the right to build a mosque anywhere in New York City, including on someone else’s land. How does he figure? Quran citation, please. [2] Why did he stand in a shadow while making a legal argument? Doesn’t the sun-cast shadow of the Statue of Liberty fall on water, in New York Harbor? Mike Bloomberg is typical of a certain kind of financier who sees religion as being an unnecessary obstacle to business deals. We saw this in the past with Ford Motors, IBM, ITT, Coca Cola and many other multinationals making deals with the Nazis. If Bloomberg had been around at the time, it is likely he would have made deals with the Nazis as well.
Modern business elites haven’t a clue what we are dealing with when we make deals with radical Islam. They haven’t any idea about the taqiyya doctrine, near-enemy doctrine, temporary-truce doctrine, terrorism doctrine of Islam nor are they aware of the basic, ‘ESSENTIAL’ teaching of AL WALAA WAL BARAA … one of the three most important teachings of Islam … the hatred that Muslims should direct against the dirty disbelievers ‘for the sake of Allah’.
Without a mastery of the doctrine AL WALAA WAL BARAA, no one can say he understands Islam.
Mark Spahn (West Seneca, NY) says
Thank you, Mortimer, for introducing the concept of “al walaa wal baraa” (I learned it from you). To confirm the meaning, I looked this up also in Wikipedia:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al-Wala%27_wal-Bara%27
It means loving Allah and all that is good and permissible in the Quran and Sharia, while hating those who oppose Allah, Islam, Muhammad, and Muslims.
Interestingly, figuring out the referents of pronouns is just as difficult in this Wikipedia article as it is in most passages of the Quran. Consider “This is for their calling towards something other than submission to Allah, whether on purpose or by nature of disbelief.” What is “this”? Who are “they”? Does “for” mean “for the purpose of”, or “because of”?

I don’t understand this type of mentality either, just as other commenters have said. Muslims attack and slaughter 3000 people and he wants to have a mosque near the site of the massacre. I guess his mentality is that the Muslim terrorists are a tiny minority and so we need to show how wonderfully forgiving and generous we, in western nations like the USA are, by allowing the mosque to be built. I find such attitudes sickening and I think that people like Bloomberg need to grow a spine and not just be a doormat for the Muslim supremacist scum to stomp all over. Back in the year of 2010 and during the month of August I attended a lecture at a church, about the subject of Islam. One of the speakers was a former Muslim, a Hezbollah member and an Iranian citizen. Now he’s a Christian and an American citizen.
After the lecture and during the question and answer part, he was asked about the Ground Zero Mosque which is that construction of that specific mosque at that specific place.
The speaker answered that the G.Z.M. would have a symbolic meaning with a message in the Islamic world, in the G.Z.M. will be in the Muslim world as a “victory monument” of Islam and Islam’s jihad over the West.
In other words the message to all jihad-minded Muslims is “Look what we have done for the cause of Islam, we have killed and have been victorious.”
