Final Serenade

Rate this book
A secret affair with your teenage celebrity crush? Yes, please!

Music journalist Cassy Evans believes her career is made when she snags an exclusive interview with rock singer Frankie Blade.

Once a superstar of the generation, Frankie has been a recluse since a freak motorcycle incident sent his career into a tailspin seven years ago. Now that he’s returned to claim back his crown, Cassy hopes to kill two birds with one stone—secure her magazine a top spot in the rankings and meet with the man of her adolescent dreams.

A dinner invitation isn’t what she expects to get out of this interview, but the chemistry between them is undeniable.

With paparazzi watching Frankie’s every move as the two jump into a stormy relationship, Cassy risks her career and her privacy—and possibly her heart—to be with the biggest rockstar on the planet. But is Frankie worth it? Is he the humble man she thinks he is or is he just that good at hiding his demons?

Final Serenade is the first installment in “The Encore” series. Cassy and Frankie’s story concludes in One Last Verse.

Final Serenade is a rockstar romance and a great one. I liked and appreciated that the characters were mature. Cassy is in her mid twenties and Frank in his late thirties. I could easily feel the author and her love for music. It transpired to the story and to the characters. Cassy is a dedicated music journalist and Frank the lead singer of Hall Affinity. They start a relationship and has to keep it a secret because of their jobs and all that comes with dating a famous person.

It’s a story with some very intriguing and flawed characters. They pulled me in immediately. Frank in particular because of his absence from the spotlight for seven years and what happened prior to that. Also his band mates especially Dante.
Cassy is a woman who loves and breathes music. She’s strong and independent. She takes her younger brother under wings.

Sadly I struggled a little with Cassy and Frank’s evolving relationship. It felt very on the surface, nothing deep and only sexual. It grew deeper towards the end of the book. Maybe it’s because it’s still the first book in a duet and a lot can still happen. I’m hoping that’s the case. Despite that I will still read the sequel cause of the amazing writing and awesome characters.

I finished this book minutes ago and I'm just sitting here staring at my screen, in awe of Britt's talent. Final Serenade is a refreshing addition to the rockstar romance genre. I was sucked in by the very clever prologue and barely put the book down until I finished, meaning I read all night and had to stop what I was doing to finish it today, laundry be damned. And now I'm in that euphoric, groggy, happy place that only comes after losing sleep for a fantastic read. Frankie Blade is as swoony as they come, and I can’t wait to read more of him in book 2!

I have no doubt Final Serenade will be on my top ten list for 2020.

Cassy and Frankie's clandestine secret relationship was just what I was in the mood for. There was angst, betrayal, secrets and more blended into this story. It was a perfect mix. Frankie was Cassy's crush from when she was younger. He's a rockstar making a comeback after years out of the spotlight. She's a music journalist. They are the most unlikely of couples...but yet they work....at least in private they do.

Cassy and Frankie venture into their relationship slowly. However, their chemistry is palpable and the attraction builds until it's evident that they don't want to be apart. Even though they are trying to keep their relationship private, they spend as much time as possible with one another. Frankie (aka Frank) develops a strong trust in Cassy (aka Cass) and shares a lot of his personal information with her. This is quite a statement of faith, especially considering the fact that she's a journalist. However, through everything, Cassy senses Frankie is holding something back.

I can't wait for the second one in this duet to release next month. That was quite the cliffhanger at the end. Thankfully, we only have to wait a month....

Disclaimer: I received an Advance Reader Copy at no cost from the publisher/author. All opinions in my review are my own.

Holy cliffhanger, Batman! Oh, my gods, I need the next installment of this series pronto! This book was just magnetic. I was pulled into this story instantly and it would not let me go.

I was totally captivated by the storytelling. I really meshed with the author's writing style. The story's flow was perfect and reading the story just felt like breathing. It was so effortless and genuine.

I was so impressed with the characters. Both the main characters, Cassy and Frankie, were drafted brilliantly. They were both complex with oodles of depth. There was a natural progression of character growth throughout this book and I can only expect more of it in the next book. Even though this is a rockstar romance and some parts of the story can seem far-fetched for the average Joe, I really found both characters to be very down to earth and realistic. Cassy and Frankie had distinct personalities that really felt authentic. I also fell in love with all of the secondary characters in the story. They really add even more depth to the story.

I really loved this romance, I really did. There was just this undeniable spark between Cassy and Frankie from the instant that they met. They kept running into each other, almost as if they were fated. The chemistry that they share is so natural and so freaking hot. They really loved to scorch up the pages. Their relationship really did feel like kismet.

The plot of this story is one that I have to applaud because I was so engrossed in this story. I was like an addict while reading this. I couldn't get enough. Needless to say, I shied away from some adulting to keep on reading this book. It really was the perfect mix of drama, emotions, and intrigue.

Overall, this is an edgy rockstar romance that will keep you wanting more. I don't know how I will survive until the conclusion comes out next month because it won't be easy. I was very impressed with this book and I can't wait to read more from this author!

I was gifted an ARC for an honest review.

I know this is a duet but I need book 2 NOW!

I loved Frank and Cass. They were authentic, it was a true love amongst a crazy world. Didn’t particularly like Dante but then again I don’t think we are supposed to, well I hope not!

Loved all the stories around the music business - it just all felt very genuine. I am going to think on it a bit more..may up my rating...

Today I discovered that my Bookbub review from when this book first came out a year ago, never got posted here!!! Well, time to rectify that right now!!!

One of my favorite things is to be introduced to the work of a new, very talented author and N.N. Britt really showed me what she had to offer when I read her debut novel, Rapture. I'm a huge sucker for great rocker romances, especially when it's written by someone who knows how to grab your attention and hold on tight. She definitely did that with Rapture and does it once more in this one.

Now for the good stuff! Cassy Evans, wise beyond her years, is part of a well respected publication-a small team of music journalists and photographers who have earned a stellar reputation for their integrity in everything they present. Her multitasking career doesn't leave room for much else, but she lives for the excitement of the music world she loves, where no 2 days or nights are ever the same. Events to cover, music and artists from new, noteworthy discoveries to the superstars already at the top of their game. What could be better than that? Special opportunities such as interviewing one of the worlds sexist men, who's bands posters adorned your walls as a teen, don't come along every day. Cassy's idol has been underground for years after a life altering accident and not one photo, word or musical note has been seen or heard from him since.

Frankie Blade, lead singer of one of rock's most successful and iconic bands, is coming back out into the world he knows best, put on hold after 7 challenging years. Finally reuniting with his Grammy award winning band and Cassy would love to be the one to get that sizzling hot story. Serendipitously, their paths begin crossing...crazy how it happens. Then, lord have mercy, Cassy gets the shock of her life when Frankie, in all his stunning, irresistible glory, wants...... HER???? Yikes, this book was such a seductive, sexy tease with some mysterious, tantalizing layers hovering just below the surface.

I couldn't get enough of it... more, more, more is what I need this very minute!! N.N. Britt has mentioned in her author info of her real life experiences in the wild and unpredictable music industry and it shows in her writing that it's a world she knows well. You feel like you're in Cassy's head as she struggles with her feelings while trying to maintain her professional image. Frankie's pain is right there to see, his persona as a major talent for so many years collides with vulnerability after so much time out of the spotlight and his dark undertones are warring for dominance at the same time. The tense atmosphere between Frankie, Dante- lead guitarist and even Cassy is a suspenseful combustion waiting to happen and I want a front row seat when it does. Topping it all off was that ending I thought was headed somewhere else... holy wow, what a twisty cliffhanger with a shock to the senses that tested my poor, poor bleeding heart! Time will not pass quickly enough for this impatient Booklover to see what happens next in One Last Verse. N.N. Britt has certainly gained a new fan in me and I can't wait to read whatever comes along in the future from her!

N.N. Britt has officially made it to the TOP of my cliffhanger SH*T LIST because of that epic ending in Final Serenade and now all I am thinking about is that I need book two like YESTERDAY! I might have once been a fan of those pesky little cliffhanger endings that author's throw our way because of that on the edge of your seat excitement and anticipation of what's to come, but NO more. I am officially refusing to EVER read another duet for as long as I shall live because of the emotional abuse that I might never heal from. AND in case you couldn't tell I was so TOTALLY being overly dramatic because I live and breathe for duets. They are my EVERYTHING and I couldn't imagine ever saying goodbye to them. I am forever addicted to them and could never stop!

ANYWHO...on a much more serious note! Can we pretty please just fast forward to May 14th already because I don't think I can possibly wait OVER a FREAKING month to get my hands on the conclusion of Cassy and Frankie's story. Final Serenade is the first part of their secret love affair and it was as ANGSTY as a f*cking telenova with the drama and steamy romance intertwined throughout the pages. Their chemistry pulled tightly on each and every single one of my heartstrings and I found myself wholeheartedly captivated by all the words. I just couldn't put down their story because I needed to know what happened next and found myself on EDGE until that cliffhanger ending that threw me right over. I am free falling in anticipation for One Last Verse and the sure to be epic conclusion of their story.

While waiting for the final book in the Encore Duet I think I might need to start an emotional support group so that I can vent out ALL of my emotions surrounding Cassy and Frankie AND that cliffhanger ending! Any of you with me? Oh and in case you aren't sure about reading this one until the release of book two...STOP RIGHT THERE...because you can't wait! I just know it's going to be WORTH THE WAIT!

This story captivated me so much from the first page that I found myself reading it straight through in one day! I absolutely loved it!

N.N. Britt truly knows the inner workings of the rock’n roll world. I found myself completely enthralled by Frank and Cassy’s story. Their chemistry was palpable, realistic and deep. The plot and character development progressed smoothly and effortlessly! The emotions, angst levels and that cliffy ending had my heart literally beating out of my chest and gasping at the end! I cannot wait for Book 2, One Last Verse!

I can’t recommend this book enough, A Must Read!

"The new sun beamed above our heads as the wind tangled our hair. I’d never done drugs before, but I imagined this was how it would feel to be high. In a way, I was high. High on him."

My favorite author didn't disappointed at all!

Reading 'Adrenaline' and then coming here to 'Final Serenade', every word justifies, every sentence flutters my heart- SO GOOOOD. I'm not exaggerating at all. The romance between Frankie and Cassy was extraordinary. The writing style was so good, at some places, it felt almost poetic- SO GOOOOD.

One of the best thing about this book apart from the absolute best writing style? That it didn't divulge too much on the age gap. Yes, there was a good age gap but it didn't let Frankie hinder from his path to approach Cassy. From whatever books I've read before from age gape and all that, it shows the male protagonist worrying himself to death on the prospect of age gape- but thankfully, it was not shown here.

I loved the passion, the angst, the zeal- everything- that the book bring forth to the readers.

The romance packed angst story was nothing and everything I've imagined. I can't wait for the final book to this duo logy to launch for me to dive into that and know what's more to come.

"My mind raced and my heart was pounding its way out of my chest. It wanted to crawl into Frank’s instead, cuddle his heart, and bleed tender words to it."

Rockstar heaven! This author gives us such beautiful words that paints a picture of these spectacular characters, their struggles, triumphs and heartbreak in a way that leaves no room to guess as to who they are. It's all right there in Ms. Britt's outstanding storytelling and character development. Her words wrap around my heart and make me tingle! This story of an aging rock god and his second coming after a horrific accident and the rock and roll journalist that catches his eye is nothing short of excellent. Frankie aka Frank needs something normal in his life after decades of living the sex, drugs and rock n roll life. His new reality dictates that he find a different way to live. Enter Cassy, the journalist that makes her living finding the scoop and reporting to fans of the artists. It's a conflict for her to entertain a relationship with this rock god but what woman could pass up the opportunity to live out her teen rock god wet fantasies? Not this smart gal. It's Frankie Blade! These two magnificent characters are on opposite sides and it's a struggle to keep their relationship hidden but Cassy career depends on it. Oh, this is one hot couple! Heart throbbing sexiness and toe curling romance! But as these two become more involved it's becomes harder to maintain their secrecy. Especially from Cassy 's co-worker, Levi and her teen brother, Ashton. Both are terrific characters. I love the growth of Ashton from knucklehead waster to competent intern of Levi and Cassy's publication, Rewired. The secondary characters are fantastic even the shady ones. Yes, I'm calling out band mate Dante. I would love a story about him. The sex-on-a-stick guitar god! The ending was an OMG cliffhanger that left me with a few tears and wanting more of this fabulous story. Can't wait for the next installment! Rock god love! I voluntarily reviewed an ARC.

I’m very familiar with N.N. Britt’s work and Finale Serenade has to be my favorite! What a complete masterpiece this book is! The plot completely original and organic from anything I’d ever read. Cassy and Frank’s chemistry was completely off the charts! The banter between Frankie and Cassy was so sweet and genuine. I found myself enraptured by Cassy and Frankie. The little world that they had made for them in between their real lives. The ending! I could NOT put Finale Serenade down whatsoever! I can’t wait for One Last Verse! N.N. Britt left me completely on the edge!

Brilliant read!
I was trying very hard to take my time reading the book so I won't have to wait too long for part two but it was just not possible.
The love story between music journalist Cassy and the phoenix out of the ashes rockstar Frankie is not only unique, but it also draws you in from the first second on. A book unlike any other. Wonderful storytelling, sexy scenes, lots of emotion and a plot that has me craving for more!
A book that won't disappoint.

This is my first time reading one of this author's works and it won't be my last. Final Serenade is a solid execution of a combination rock star/forbidden love romance. It's obvious that Ms. Britt has connections to the world of music, as her prose definitely had that authentic "been there" vibe. A killer Spotify playlist always garners additional kudos from me, especially when the storyline revolves around the music industry. Reader beware though...there is a gigantic cliffy at the end of the book. Luckily for me, One Last Verse is already loaded up and waiting for me to dive in.

I know this book is a part of a duet, but man. I did NOT want this book to end. The pull between Frankie and Cassy is evident from the very beginning, but watching their relationship slowly unfold - and get stronger, even with all the stuff going on around them - had me in my feelings for most of the book. Frankie and Cassy have so much strength and resiliency, and they're tested in so many ways throughout this book but still manage to keep it together. I love Cassy's sass and Frankie's rocker-with-a-softer-side vibe; I'm not a big fan of Dante, even before the extent of his bad boy side came to light, but his storyline adds twists to the story that make it such a dynamic read.

I'm so excited to finish this duet. Cassy and Frankie are quickly becoming one of my favorite literary couples of 2020!

Thank you to the author for an advanced copy of this book. It's fantastic and gripping and emotional. You'll love it and want more.

This is my first book by this author and it won't be my last, fantastic story.

OK fair warning this ends on a huge cliffhanger but luckily we don't have long to wait for the next installment. I love bookas set in the music world and this one had me hooked from the start. Cassie and Frankie are two very complex and likeable characters and their love story captivated me. I loved the concept of the story it's not typical of this genre. We get to see alot of what happens in the background which made it interesting. The chemistry between the two is palpable, you can feel the sizzle on the pages when they are together. Although the pace and timeline is quite fast it still felt natural, if your a believer in fate or that your one is out there you'll appreciate this one.

the book started off excellent and was very promising. Well written! But I expected the moment of the encounter between the 2 protagonists to be "on the point" and wanted it to spark fireworks. unfortunately - it wasn't. At any other time I would Proceed a little further to see whether the book is taking the good direction or the bad one. But I have zero patience these days and my time is so limited, so I decided to quit. At the same time - I will not rank it because it is not fair.

This story is as much about Cassy Evans’ professional reputation and integrity as a music journalist and the rules that she chooses to live by as it is about her relationship with other characters in the book; her professional partner, her brother and most of all, her teenage crush and rock God, Frankie Blade.
It is her job that leads to a face to face meeting with the enigmatic, Frankie Blade, rock singer and front man of Hall Affinity.

Frankie re-emerges onto the music scene after falling off the face of the earth following a horrific accident seven years ago. Cassy lands a very prestigious gig interviewing Frankie and as a result of several unintentional meetings with him, finally accepts a spontaneous invitation to dinner.

It is obvious from the word go that they have chemistry but it is also obvious that life isn’t going to give them an easy ride. Faced with having to hide her relationship with Frank, from her boss, her brother and the rest of the world, it places untold pressure on Cassy. Frank is needy and Cassy is torn in her loyalties but she finds a way of making it work.

Throughout the story-line, Dante Martinez makes regular appearances, described as Franks best friend and the ultimate guitar God, Dante appears to be a fun-loving rocker out for a good time. As the book develops, he is revealed as quite a dark and possibly vengeful character on more than one occasion and I fear that he has a lot more to say in the concluding book. Whilst I liked Dante’s character in the beginning, his dark side has me wondering if there isn’t an awful lot more to this Machiavellian individual and maybe…..just maybe (Ms Britt), Dante Martinez might get his own book one day?

The writing, as always in NN Britt’s books, is flawless. It flows effortlessly, the main characters are well developed. Cassy is a strong, ethical and responsible young woman who, despite working in such a cut throat industry, lives by her own moral code. You can’t help but like her. She takes on the responsibility for her younger brother Ashton, labelled as a lazy video-addicted douche, who is fast heading off the rails.

Frankie is an enigma! He is both complex and mercurial and very ‘rock n roll’. Cassy has worshiped him for a long time and she quickly realises that going all in is going to get her hurt. I loved Frank but I didn’t like the way he calls her ‘doll’ all the time, it felt demeaning to their relationship, as if Frankie wasn’t as committed as Cassy to their relationship….but maybe that’s a deliberate ploy by the author?

The reader is very quickly sucked into the story and I found myself hanging on by my fingertips right until that breath-taking cliff hanger of an ending. Thank goodness I waited for book 2 One Last Verse to be released, before reading Final Serenade.

Final Serenade is a great read, don’t miss out on it! And a heads up…..before you start reading book one, head over to Ms Britt’s web site and get hold of Adrenaline 1999, a short novella that gives some insight and background into the early years of Frank and his first encounters with Dante.

Final Serenade, The Encore: Book 1, N.N. Britt

Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews

Genre: Romance, Women's Fiction.

Gah, women's fiction again...men write romance, men read romance, lets get with the 21st century.

Anyway, rock romance, I love it, and this features characters a little older, which is great for me. Teen angst can be fun, but its much nicer to find characters that have a little more depth.
I loved this book, loved it. So much in this genre features ( as above) teens, lead females that swoon as soon as they are looked at, forget all their principles when the MC approaches them, or MCs that are little more than monosyllabic, shallow males, who demand everyone falls at their feet.
Frank(ie) came as a real treat, and of course Cassy isn't one to fall over, legs akimbo just because her teen crush looks her way!

I loved that it wasn't just Cassy meets Frankie, but that both had a lot of other things going on in their lives. That made them feel real, made the story so much more interesting. Cassy was great, determined to stay professional even when faced with her teen dreams. I loved that she tries to help her mum and little brother, even though he's a typical at times obnoxious teen....That is mirrored in so many people's families, we love our parents and siblings even when it feels like they are going to drive us mad.
Frankie, Cassy ( and I) had so many questions about his return. Why now? Is he touring? And When? Why has it taken so long? Is he well enough or hiding something?
Then there's his band-mate Dante, who at first seemed a decent guy underneath the rock star ego, but then we learn more and he's not quite like that.

I understood why Frankie worked so hard to keep their relationship secret, the media are relentless, and Cassy's career will be shot to pieces, so while they're seeing what's between them he tries to keep things covered. And yet I also felt for Cassy, she knows this is for the best, but at times her imagination runs away...I think most of us would be like that.
And that ending, Gah, I hate those, but luckily for me I've been approved book two, the conclusion of their story. I hope we get to hear more from the band, from the other members, its such a treat to get characters in their thirties ;-) This duet is on KU right now too.

Stars: Five, terrific read, a rock star romance, with so much extra in the story. One I'll happily re-read.

5+ Stars for this heart wrenching story!

Frank had a hard start in life until he was adopted at the age of six. His adoptive parents were flower children from the 70s and their love for music rubbed off on Frankie. He became a rock superstar. But at the height of his career he was in a bad motorcycle accident and it took him seven years to return to the music. Cassy is a rock journalist who has had a crush on Frankie Blade since she was a teenager ... before the accident. Now she has the chance to be one of Frankie’s first interviews In seven years. Little did she realize that her life would be forever be changed.

Really this book deserves more than 5 stars! Rockstars are my favorite ... and I absolutely LOVED this book. It is definitely not your average rock star book ... it’s so much more! My heart just broke for Frankie. I loved how Cassy didn’t let his superstardom treat him differently ... she razzed him like she would anyone. The banter between the characters is so realistic ... and that equates to a great writer! This book checked all the boxes for me ... it made me laugh out loud, cry and swoon. I literally could not put it down and I’m going to dive into the conclusion right away. Read it ... believe me you won’t regret it!

3 stars!

I was in the mood for a little "rock star romance" and this book fit the bill. The book begins with an awesome wikipedia write-up for a hugely popular rock band named Hall Affinity. The lead singer of the band's name is Frank and through the wikipedia entry, we learn that the band is on hiatus after Frank is in a very bad accident. Frank has had a low profile since the accident and there is much speculation as far as what happened to him and the possibility of a come-back tour.

Cassy is a music journalist who is given the opportunity to interview Frank for the first time since the accident. There is immediate chemistry between them and Cassy has been infatuated with Frank since her teenage years.

This book was just ok for me. I didn't feel a huge connection between Frank and Cassy....just an attraction. I really count on my romance novels to have chemistry and connection between the couple and this one misses on this. I will finish out the series with the next book, One Last Verse.
