Her Greatest Mistake

Rate this book
Be careful what you wish for. Isn’t that what they say? In my defence, what woman wouldn’t wish for a handsome, intense, and successful man? Aiden is all of these things and more.

He is also a jerk of epic proportions.

He is blunt, closed-off, and secretive. I know there’s more to him than just his good looks, but he refuses to open up. So why do I keep going back for more?

Yes, our chemistry is off the charts, but physical attraction isn’t enough to sustain a real relationship. And that’s what I want—a real connection with the real Aiden.

Too bad he just keeps on breaking my heart. Will I finally crack that tough armour Aiden wears like a cloak?

Or will Aiden truly be my greatest mistake?

**Please note that this is a book with a strong, arrogant, male character. If you are looking for a PG sweet romance book, then this book is not for you. If you want a raw, stripped down, gripping romance that can only come from having a bossy, domineering, unapologetic male character, then sit back and enjoy.**

Her Greatest Mistake by Eve L. Mitchell is by far my most favourite book from this author. The novella which lead to this full novel left me with a million and one questions and wanting the full story immediately, as the cliffhanger was epic, it left me with my jaw on the floor. I don’t demand to read more of books, but in this case, I needed all the words!! So my anticipation and need for continuing this story was extremely high on my TBR.

The journey Eve L. Mitchell takes you on with Jemma and Aiden’s building relationship was brilliantly captivating, frustrating at times, steamy as hell and overall addictive. When a book has me on the edge of my seat and wanting to get to the next page, but also savour the story, is a massive win for me.

I deeply connected with Jemma in this story, through her heartbreak, the way she copes with certain days and just gets lost in a book and a bath, as well as her internal (plus sometimes external) monologue - she’s rather funny. I think all of this and more, makes Jemma one of the most relatable and memorable characters I’ve read. In every aspect that a character could be real, Jemma was.

Nothing about Her Greatest Mistake was predictable, nor was I going to try to guess what was to come. Eve L. Mitchell definitely far exceeded my expectations for this book, which left me with a true book hangover, and one I know I won’t be able to shake for some time.

If you love contemporary romance, that’s captivating, passionate, emotional and unexpected, then you’ll definitely want to one-click this book.

This is one of those where I kept asking myself "But why?"

There was a physical pull between Jemma and Aiden but that was it really. He never took the time to truly make a connection with Jemma. She didn't even know his last name, which was fine when it was a hookup but after months of working in the same building? A couple of sexual interludes? Come on.

There were a couple of moments (they passed briefly) where I thought Aiden might give a little of himself. But nope it was just a tease to keep his new possession on her leash. I really did not like him.

Jemma where are you ovaries woman? Sure the accountant was a bit misogynistic but hello?? Compared to Aiden? He could be the poster boy for women's rights. At least he admitted his failures.

Take into account all the posturing - and it is not just Aiden.
Add into that mix a two-faced supposed best friend-
A criminal father who is just a blatant meanie-
A marriage of convenience (not sure who's really)-
A jealous "not really a wife" wife (wait for it)-
Add a bit of comic relief provided via friends and family-
And you have a soap opera that will keep you bouncing back and forth on the love ya - loathe ya court.

The writing was solid and the story flowed easily.
We get the whole thing from Jemma's perspective. I can't help but wonder if maybe we had seen a bit of the story from Aiden's perspective (what he was thinking when he was discarding Jemma like a used paper plate) it would have been easier to connect with him? them?
For me, that missing connection is what lowered this to an okay read.
I just ...
There where to many things I could not get past and I missed the connection.
The copy I read was comp

This book had me all over the place emotionally because one second Aiden our main Hero could have me swooning and the very next second he could have me so angry I wanted to yell at him through my ereader. When Jemma meets Aiden he is this larger than life character that seems to have a chip on his shoulder even if he is the best looking guy she has ever seen, its like he just jumped off her kindle and into real life, but that attitude of his. Jemma is this sweet, kind hearted woman that works hard and has been through a bad relationship so she really isn't looking for anything except Aiden has other plans for her. He comes in like a wrecking ball and turns her life upside down, but he is full of secrets and refuses to let her in on some of them. I would get so frustrated at him for the way he played aloof to Jemma's feelings and beat around the bush when it came to letting her close to him emotionally wise. He was a total alpha but could be such a jerk that at times I wasn't sure if I truly liked him or not. There were a lot of twists and turns some I saw coming, others I was shocked about but in the end it was a good read especially if you love over the top alphas.

My rating: 3 1/2 stars.

What I liked: Even though Aiden(H) pissed me off at times, I did enjoy is character. There is just something about a j/p man that gets to me every time. The way he was with Jemma(h) ... well let’s just say that their chemistry was off the charts.

What I didn’t like: I needed more.....I wanted a scene with Aiden and his dad....I wanted more with the neighbors....I wanted to read about the meeting with his wife and her dad...I wanted Jemma to confront her boss.....and lastly I want to know more about Levi.

How hot was it: 4 out 5

Triggers: H is married (this marriage was arranged by his dad in order to get money to start his business) when he starts a relationship with the h. I want to point out that the marriage was never consummated. Also, the h was cheated on by her fiancé.

Final thoughts: This was my first book by Eve Mitchell and I will definitely read more of her books. If you enjoy a j/p H (which I’m a sucker for) this book is for you. Hopefully, Levi gets his own book.

I really liked this book. Aiden is a really complex guy and it did take me a while to like him. He is real and genuine but my only issue is that some of his actions didn’t make sense. On the plus side, I really loved the heroine. She was super strong and really made the book awesome and was a perfect match for Aiden. The romance was super hot and awesome. I highly recommend this book.

So this book went from heavy office romance banter to full on mafia romance. Okeydokey. This wasn't what I was expecting but I read mafia romance as well so moving on.

Their relationship is so fucking shallow. They do nothing but have sex. That's it. Whenever the doormat of a female character wants to talk, he simply fucks her stupid.

I usually don't mind when MMC is an arrogant SOD, but he must at least be nice to FMC even if he's a dick to everyone else. For me to enjoy the story, I need them to have somewhat of a good relationship. I need to want them to be together. Here, I honestly wanted her to be with her neighbor, or someone who actually has something in common with her and talks to her. He doesn't listen to her, her needs or wants. He fucks her. And that's it. How are we supposed to root for them if they are more in lust than in love? They seem suuuuuuper toxic together.

I don't know why I still read it all because I was sighing and screaming at her pathetic reactions all the times!
GO GET YOURSELF SELF-ESTIME AND DIGNITY WOMAN!

It's still well written enough that I finished it so I gave it 2 stars, but let it be known that I wanted to hit them the whole time.

Aiden was one of the most toxic male characters I've ever read and she just instantly got over his behavior??? That's a huge no from me, I should've marked this one as a dnf from the beginning. He never had any redeeming moments, he was just a douche.

* I received an advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review. *

The first thing that helps me decide whether I want to read a book is the cover. While we can only fantasize about meeting our favorite Hero meeting the cover model is as close as we can get. Jemma is shocked to think the man standing by her is the cover model of the book she is reading.
It was him?
No, you’re an idiot, the model of the cover of the book you’re reading is not in a coffee shop in high vis waterproof clothing. In December. In Denver. Working on a construction site. No, don’t be stupid, Jemma.
Her Greatest Mistake is a perfect title for this book. I found myself battling whether I wanted her to end up with Aiden. I had a love/hate relationship with him. At moments I felt it was just him being a dominating alpha and other times he was being a complete ass. I could not understand how he just expected her to trust him without him giving her any details about his life.

“You told me you would tell me what was going on.”
“And I Will. But not yet.”
“You need to trust me, Jemma.

I cannot tell you how many times I wanted to slap Jemma and tell her to wake up. He told her absolutely nothing about himself and when she gets blindsided on New Year’s Eve by Kat, she does not stop seeing him. Every time he does something questionable or does not want to answer her questions, I want to scream at her because one kiss and she gives in to him…again! While I loved his alpha characteristic in the bedroom, the way he controls the rest annoys me.

I felt like I was on the edge of my seat the whole time wanting to know what Aiden’s secrets are. This is the first book I have read from Eve L. Mitchell. She did the great job keeping the reader engaged. I am interested to see what other type of books are in her collection.

I'm not sure I even have the words to describe how amazingly intense this book was. If you love those bossy, Alpha males - who know what they want and get what they want no matter the cost - you will definitely want to read this! I fell in love with Jemma & Aiden in Eve's story in the Hogmanay anthology and was so happy she gave us more. Her Greatest Mistake dives deeper into their relationship. It's clear they both struggle with trust - can they learn to trust one another?! Eve takes us on a roller coaster of twists and turns as we watch them struggle to keep their relationship afloat. Between the secrets and sheer bossiness of Aiden, there is so much turmoil. One second you're wanting to punch him for his crude, abrasive behavior and then you're putty in his hands. Much like Jemma. She's this shy, quiet girl who falls for someone that's her total opposite and brings out a completely different side of her she hadn't known existed. This book wrecked me by the end. I was literally in tears - which doesn't happen easily. If you like PG, Disney like romance books, this isn't for you. If you like the raw, stripped down, gut wrenching romance books that only comes from a bossy alphahole...this book is for you!

I really enjoyed Her Greatest Mistake by Eve L. Mitchell once I was a few chapters in. Jemma is in a coffee shop reading her romance book when she bumps into someone. That someone is Aiden, who she thinks is the cover model for her book. He's not, but they talk for a bit. When Jemma gets to her office, where she works as a PA for a lawyer, she is surprised to find Aiden there. Aiden is the manager for the construction work that is happening in the building, and will be working with Jemma, who is acting as a liaison for the lawyer and the construction work. There is instant chemistry between Aiden and Jemma, and it's not long before they end up having s*x together. But then Jemma discovers that Aiden is keeping secrets from her and might not be the man she thought he was. However, Aiden wants to keep seeing Jemma and continuing their relationship. Should Jemma continue seeing Aiden, who she can't stop thinking about? The blurb is extremely vague on this book, and I had no real idea of what this book was about. So I'd recommend keeping an open mind. There were sooo many steamy scenes between Aiden and Jemma. Aiden was a real hunk and sexy guy in this story. The beginning was a little slow, but I couldn't put this book down once I got deeper into the story. I liked the twists that occurred in the book. I wish that Aiden and Jemma had more of a connection emotionally, because it was mostly sexual between them, which made the pining and angst feel a bit odd. And Jemma was unwilling but always gave into Aiden in the end. I just wanted more of their relationship outside of the bedroom. Jemma came off as immature near the end of the novel, and I wish she had stood her ground a bit more at times, but she was fine overall. I did like the overall story and I could feel the heat between Jemma and Aiden. I really liked Jemma's neighbors and friends Steve and Tyler and would love to read more about them. Overall, I'd recommend this story.

I love a book that immediately pulls you in. This is one of them. It was intriguing and HOT!
Jemma’s life becomes a very rough rollercoaster of emotions. I came along for the ride.

Aiden is an alpha that you either feel for him or hate him. I felt he had another side of him that caused the ups and downs. He comes with A LOT of baggage that no one wants to be involved in. But for Jemma? He is too irresistible, he pulls her out of her comfort zone. He can’t seem to get enough of her.

Sometimes I wondered based on either Jemma’s behavior or how Aiden treats her on what his appeal is for her. Yet it’s hard not to secretly root for these two to make it work.
It was hard to see them have any other conversation to get to know each other outside the physical except the end...Swoon! You just realize how much they are good for one another.

Even with these thoughts of the characters, I was addicted to the book. It was kind of refreshing not to see perfect characters. Their story made it a compulsive read, having to know what would happened to them.
Do I wish the characters were a little different? -Yes.
Did I enjoy it? -Every minute of it!
Will I read more of this author’s books? -Absolutely!!

How should I describe this story. It was for sure a rollercoaster. Rollercoaster of emotions. Rollercoaster of actions. It was a hot read. Aiden is not an easy guy to understand, specially when he keeps everything so secret, giving just tiny bits of infirmations at the time. Which of course made Jemma crazy. Still she took it all relatively well. Next to him she was loosing all her resolves. One touch and she would forget her questions. And touch he did, a lot, and my oh my was it a steamy read. It was amazing page turner, which kept me completely engrossed in it.. till the point of falling asleep with my reader in hand at nearly the end of the book, out of my own exhaustion, at 3am in the morning. But the hardest was to wait till I finished work the following day to could finish it. Oh my was it good.

Aiden is almost too much man to handle. Hes the ultimate cocky Alpha. One chance meeting turns into a wild crazy ride for Jemma. Aiden is that man who does and gets what he wants. Innocent little Jemma just cant say no to him. She had no chance from the beginning when she though he was a cover model look alike. Aiden has secrets, secrets he cant tell her but she's his and he'll do anything to claim her.
Looking for a domineering alpha man story then this is the story for you. He won't accept no for an answer!

Wow. This book was way way more than I thought it would be. A little darker & crazier than I was expecting.

It took me almost the entire book to like Aiden & even than I’m still not sold on him. He was alpha as hell. Rude, abrasive, closed off & crude.

Jemma, god I felt bad for her at the beginning, then with how things went down with Aiden I felt less bad for her. Her office life surprised the hell out of me at the end. I was not expecting that at all.

I loved her brother & his wife. But I really loved Steve & Tyler. I’d love to get their story! This book kept me turning pages because I just had to find out the secrets & wanted to know how it was all going to turn out!

I received an arc of this book in return for an honest review.

This book wreaked me, and I totally blame the author. Mitchell takes us on a roller coaster of emotions and need - and desire. Let’s say it outright, Aiden Ashton is a smokin’ hot character. the FMC, Jemma, is more than a match for him. While I barracked for them both at times - and wanted to slap them, too - I also fell in love with all the side characters presented. Some cross over with the author’s Boulder series, but I sincerely hope we see more of these new characters. The ending does not disappoint.

Lord! This was so hot! So good! I read the first part of this in an anthology—I may or may not have stalked and slightly threatened ELM with bodily harm to complete the story and give me more Aiden (if you’re the police reading this, I totally didn’t do that 😳). All I can say is, it was worth the wait. Aiden was worth the wait. It was all worth the pain and suffering to get this magnificent masterpiece that I can treasure for years to come. #bookboyfriendsareforever

‘My fingers traced my lips as I thought about how he had tasted. He tasted like heartbreak and lies..’

Her Greatest Mistake by Eve L. Mitchell is a new adult office romance and I really hope this is the first book in a new series.

When Jemma first saw hot construction work Aiden at a coffee shop he reminded her of the model on her book cover; Only Aiden was nothing like the perfect hero in her book. He’s rude, crude, possessive, closed off and abrupt. After one night of passion she quickly realises Aiden will definitely be her greatest mistake.

This book was not what I expected at all and I loved it. I had a love hate relationship with Aiden and I loved Jemma - I did however struggle with how often she spoke to herself out loud. I also loved most of the supporting characters and really hope her neighbours get their own book ! This is my first read by Eve L. Mitchell and I look forward to reading more of her work.

Wow! I needed to digest everything I read before writing my review because it was so good and gave me all the feels. I read an anthology that had the beginning of this story in it and I really hoped there would be more because I fell in love with it. This book is super intense. Aiden is a super alpha male and Jemma is this sweet timid girl and their relationship has so many bumps and holy heavens you just have to read it. You will fall in a love hate relationship with Aiden and love Jemma.

Chemistry

Jemma and Aiden's relationship centers around a power struggle that sizzles on the page. As Jenna gets closer to Aiden he tried to hide his secrets, but the more they spend together the more you can see him struggle to remember why the secrets are so important.

They novel is full of sexy chemistry that pulls the reader in for more.

Gaaaaaah! This book, this book! Gaaaaah!
So we had a hint of this book in the anthology and clearly my begging of Eve for more worked as here we are with a full length novel.
So Jemma, small in stature but a little bit fiesty... this woman makes me laugh but my god at times does she need to stand her ground
Steve and Tyler... i so need more of them, please and thank you.
Aiden, is a controling alphahole who wants what he wants and no talking will get in his way. His heart is in the right place but damn, this man needs to learn how to use his mouth....i mean he knows how to use it but words would be good too!
This book had me screaming, cursing at aiden and Eve! I just love how Eves words suck you in and leaves you hungry, thirsty and desperately needing sleep as of course you cant put the darn thing down.
Trust me on this, it is well worth it

This book is such a wild ride. Aiden is the guy you love to hate yet can't help but root for him and the heroine to have a happy ever after. Speaking of the heroine, Jemma is superb. She has one of the greatest meet-cutes of all time and is sassy yet vulnerable. I love her so much. She is also so relatable it's not funny. But seriously, this story has mafia-world/crime boss-ish undertones, chemistry out the ears, and so much steam you want to swoon.

What does it say about me that I love reading about relationships like this? I mean, they're unhealthy as hell. It's probably definitely really socially irresponsible portray this as true love. I don't know what to tell you, I was into it!

This book was well written, and I think that's a major part of why this worked for me. There are some really clever bits of humor peppered in there, and I love that the characters aren't all archetypes. The mystery element was really entertaining, and while I suspected some of the twists, there was a lot that happened that I found genuinely surprising. It was a great story.

The couple's chemistry was riveting. Again, super unhealthy, but I could read about four more books of it. For a while I was concerned that their connection was just sex, but I didn't feel that way by the end. I do think that their relationship is still very heavily sex based though, and I continue to have severe concerns for their communication skills.

Heads up, there is some dubcon, mostly in the style of, 'I'll kiss you until you consent,' or 'you asked a very valid question or concern that I don't want to answer, so I'm just going to force you to kiss me until you get into it and we bang.'

The heroine, Jemma, is a wildcard. She does totally do that thing so prevalent in romance novels where she's so unrealistically stubborn that it just turns into petulance, and it goes on for way longer than I had patience for. But, where this heroine differs from that archetype is that she's actually pretty sane sometimes. Like, there are parts where I think she's going to have the same tired irrational freakout to a situation, and instead she pulls a fast one and thinks things through logically. I mean, not enough that I would trust her decision making in general however. For example...

Quick poll: Imagine that somebody at work tries to order you around, without having any authority to do so. How do you choose to proceed? Do you:

a. Do what they tell you to do anyway.

b. Tell them no, you will not do what they say.

c. Explain to them that they need to rephrase their demand as a request and/or say please.

d. Stand up, kick them in the shin, and run in the other direction.

So she kept me on my toes.

***SPOILERS***

I'm going to say up front that the best part is🤌 💥That was fucking genius.

There are some loose strings that I wish had been seen to. I really felt like the heroine needed to grow a pair with Nadine.

Also, the drama with her ex-fiance just kind of petered out without a whole lot of closure. I guess there wasn't much more to say or do, I just wish I got to see a point where she tells him off, or some other such thing.

Really, I just wanted to see her take more of a stand, with both Nadine and her ex-fiance. Both situations felt like they were headed toward something like that, and then just stopped.

What was going on with that Calvin shit toward the end there?

The book ends on something of a I thought the ending pieces were great. I like that the requisite love declarations didn't have the dirty talking hero suddenly reciting a flowery sonnet, he shared his feelings in a way that felt true to character. My favorite part was the

This is the only time in recent memory where I really hope that the author makes a follow up to a standalone. I don't feel done with these two!

I love Aiden and Jemma. They have a steamy explosive connection. Aiden is intense in the best way possible, and Jemma is sweet and and full of sass that comes out most when she's with Aiden. These two have an uphill battle to be together. Every page pulls you in and the need to know whats next will keep you flipping the pages as fast as you can read them. It's absolutely sensational!!

Amazon

Jemma is shocked to find the man standing next to her looks just like the model on the cover of the book she's reading. Is it him? Of course not... Who he is, though, is a hottie with a major attitude who apparently charms the wits right out of the women he meets, including Jemma. Too bad he has secrets that put her life in danger and he's not inclined to share those secrets, even with her.

First off, I have to say that I don't have a problem with the writing in this story, it's actually very good. It's the story itself I did not really like, or to be more precise, the two leads I did not like. Aiden because he's a complete douchewad of an asshole. Every time Jemma asked him to be more transparent with things that impacted, you know, only HER life, he just proceeded to sex her up instead of being open with her. His whole attitude was at first grumpy pants asshole. Then after they got together it was just dominating dickhead with no softening, no being open, no sharing of feelings and secrets. Just do what I say because. And not in a Dom way, in a dick way. Not a good look at all. And Jemma? Damn woman, grow a backbone! Now I know our libidos can wreak havoc on our good sense, a tight body can make us do stupid things, but he treated her terribly and she let him all because she couldn't resist his touch. Sigh...so basically if this story had two different leads I probably would have given this 4 stars because it's an interesting, entertaining story. But if I dislike the two leads, I cannot in good conscience, give it more than 3 stars.

This book had my emotions all over the place. On one hand Aiden is this sexy as sin guy who you love, but on the other hand he refuses to tell Jemma anything that she wants to know and you just want to strangle him. I felt Jemma’s frustration at the fact that she couldn’t get answers from him and that he was able to distract her so easily. This book shows how messy some relationships can be and that not everything is as black and white as we might like them to be.

I adore Steve and Tyler and I really hope to see more of them in the next books. I feel like that Jemma made a real connection with both of them and that they are genuinely nice guys who have her best interests at heart.

Wow I loved this book....ok so I could seriously smack Aiden and come to think of it Jemma too for being such a pushover at times but this book has such a good intense storyline its fab. The growing relationship between Aiden and Jemma is an emotional rollercoaster ride but thankfully ends in a HEA. I started it thinking I'll read it over the weekend but then couldn't put it down....who needs sleep lol this is just brilliant and well written.... so definitely highly recommend it.

This one was a fun read. It has some great twists and turns you don’t necessarily see coming.

Jemma is our female lead. At first brush she appears small and a bit timid. Then Jemma shocks us all by asking Mister Tall, Dark, and Construction Visibility Vest if he’s the covet model from her book.

Jemma continues to be a bit timid, yet sassy, as she is drawn deeper into Mr. Construction’s world. Turns out his name is Aiden. He’s the business owner as well as the project manager. However, Aiden had secrets.

Jemma finds herself drawn deeper and deeper into Aiden’s world as her world slowly begins to unwind. As the plot unfolds, we find more and more about Aiden that leaves the reader wondering if he’s the hero or the villain.

There were some great side characters engaged in the story as well. I enjoyed the development of Jemma’s brother Jeremy. I was surprised at the hidden facets of her boss. Jemma’s office mate, Nadine. You’re constantly asking yourself whose side Nadine is on, wondering when the mean girl is going to show up, or laughing over her ridiculous sexual banter.

I have to admit, this book was more than I thought it would be when I started it, and I was pleasantly surprised.

Be prepared for plot lines you never see coming, antics of crazy in love neighbors, a jealous, insecure, bumbling accountant and a hot connection between the two main characters.

This book is a ride and a half. Great summer read. Great beach read. It’s going into my library to be read again.
