Most of the coronavirus cases are in the New York area. Most of them involve elderly people in nursing homes. So why has the country been shut down and the economy wrecked to counter a virus that is no more deadly than many others for which we have not brought the entire country, and much of the world, to a screeching halt?

Of course we’ll never know how many more corpses we would have on the planet over the next few years if we had just carried on, business as usual.
Dem damn scientist dudes don’t know what they’re talking about. This ain’t the Black Death that killed over a hundred million in Europe. Let’s keep our greed in perspective. If we can’t shape up now, we’ll never cope with the dying planet crisis.
Dumbasses! GIMME MORE MORE NOW NOW !!!

Dying planet crisis?

Not being in full possession of the scientificl facta, I can’t say whether I agree with you or not Robert.
But I can’t help saying that, right from the start of this crisis, I often thought that the argument you offer here might be the correct one.
In Italy the three-month lockdown and separation from fellow human beings has been an extremely corrosive emotional experience that I found very damaging to the psyche.
I admit the truth: I frequently thought, “I’d rather get the virus and die”. My dogs saved me, and a generous friend who secretly offered me coffee. Dodging police patrols on the way.

Has anything noticed anything peculiar about Ramadan this year?
It could be because of COVID-19…
….But there have been next to no reports of bombings in the not-so-glorious Islamic world?
Or did I miss them?

There were a couple here, abad:

But yes–fewer crowds during Covid-19 lockdowns, so fewer targets for bombings.

Even Moslems must operate under the constraints of the physical world. So production is down this year. But the good news is that they’ll eventually be up in Jannat, on their thrones, that is if they murder in the cause of Jihad.

In most European countries, the statistical median of deaths caused by and with Covid-19 is around 82 years of age.
What is the statistical median of deaths caused by muslims?
Renember, the statistical median will help telling you the average number of years of life the respective disease has destroyed!

The bottom line is life is for the living. The second worst part of our reaction was to declare some jobs as essential and others therefore non-essential. Well, if the money you receive from your work allows you and your family to keep on living then it is obviously essential to you. Even some politicians who need tax money to fund their caprices haven’t taken the time to figure out where their play money comes from.
The worst part of our reaction was refusal to face the fact that this epidemic could only become pandemic if we allowed its vectors to travel everywhere at ease. We did not do that because we give too much credence to what our China-loving and tyranny-loving ”world government” had to say. ”It is not a pandemic. It is not a pandemic. Oh, alright, it is a pandemic, but who knew?”

100% of those who became sick unto death or died with Covid-19 had low levels of D3 (=Cholecalciferol).
D3 is NOT a vitamin, Gravenimage. Please review current physiology. Many papers have been published just in the last 3 months.
I have used D3 to prevent the seasonal flu & colds for over 20 years in Alaska, where people will share confined spaces when it’s minus 40 degrees outside.
Low D3 is what nursing home patients and people with dark skin have in common if they are not supplementing.
gravenimage says
drodom, this is certainly referred to as Vitamin D3, even by drug companies, and you can take it as a ‘vitamin’ supplement:
https://www.drugs.com/mtm/vitamin-d3.html
You are right that Vitamin D is not technically a vitamin–it is a prohormone, but this makes little difference to the average layperson, even those who are pretty knowledgeable.
Vitamin D (I will continue to refer to this as Vitamin D, simply because it is the norm here) levels seem to have a pretty shaky connection to Coronavirus outcomes:
https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/should-people-take-vitamin-d-to-ward-off-the-new-coronavirus
Correlation is not necessarily causation–many of these with low Vitamin D levels were aged or otherwise ill, and they are often vulnerable to disease for many other reasons.
Now, anyone with actual low Vitamin D levels (D3 or any other kind) *should* be taking supplements, and make sure they get enough exposure to full-spectrum sun.
But there is also a danger in taking too much Vitamin D:
https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/vitamin-d-side-effects#1
Remember a couple of decades ago where many people assumed that if adequate Vitamin C levels helped healthy people ward off colds and flu, that megadosing would make you practically invulnerable? That wasn’t true then, and would not be true with Vitamin D3 now.
I’m glad that you have stayed healthy even in the tough conditions of Alaska, drodom. That may be due to factors other than your taking Vitamin D3, however.
Taking a balanced multivitamin is a good idea for most people, even if they eat a healthy diet and keep in shape. But megadosing on Vitamin D3, or any other vitamin, is seldom a good idea. I realize that may not be suggesting this–but many assume that if some is good, that more is always better.
Don Ameche says
What you say is true Craven. I believe though the Vit D3 was only effective in very mild cases and/or possibly in prevention of exposure becoming a full blown infection. The high doses of D3 were limited in time. In addition very high levels of Vit C were administered intravenously . Again for short duration. The early studies in Japan, SK and Taiwan showed some efficacy.
I know some Hospitals in Detroit were using this therapy ( along with HCQ, Azithromycin and Zinc ) until Remdesivir became the ’cause celebre’.

Thank you, Don.
drodom says
Thank you for your balanced reply, Gravenimage. You are absolutely correct that association does not prove causation. What will likely become elucidated over the coming months to years is what constitutes a megadose of cholecalciferol and what blood level is most strikingly associated with benefit without side effects.
gravenimage says
I hope you are right, drodom.

I already had it and I’m not one to get sick. Got it from work where there was lots of travel to and from China. Nasty thing it was. Lasted about a month. I thought that it was some kid of combination of a cold and the flu. It was something I had never experienced.
Now that I am immune I don’t wear masks, don’t practice social distancing, but then, I never did. What would anyone be worried about, me spreading antibodies?
gravenimage says
Glad to hear you recovered–I’ve heard it’s really nasty, even if you are normally healthy.
tgusa says
Thanks. Funny thing though. A buddy of mine at work got it when I did. We work closely together so no surprise. He called me up and said, remember when we got really sick and you were blaming the Chinese and I was going, what, where is that coming from? I said, oh yeah, I forgot about that. That was before anyone knew anything about the virus or even its existence.
I used to think that working in unrefined botox labs was dangerous but now, out there is not too different.
