The Devil's Crown: Part 1

Rate this book
**All The Pretty Things Trilogy Spin-Off**

I was feared.
Respected.
Worshiped.

But all of that changed when the impossible happened—I fell in love. Only those feelings weren’t reciprocated, because who could love a monster like me?

My empire crumbled. People died. I went from being a victorious leader to lurking in the shadows, planning revenge on my half-brother who now reigns in my place.

An orphanage is where I find sanctuary, but when she walks into my world and evokes a yearning I thought long dead, my demons are awakened and want what they can’t have—her. Sooner or later, I knew I’d need to feed the darkness inside me.

Mayhem, power, and control course through my veins. I will use them to regain my crown, my throne, and then claim her, despite what solemn vows she might’ve made.

I will break them…and her.

'THE DEVIL'S CROWN' Is part one, and is an all the pretty things trilogy spin-off

WOW!! This lulled me into a false sense of security, thinking the story was going to go one way when BAM out of nowhere like I stung mullet I sat there with my mouth wide open, twists and turns had my stomach all twisted up, blind sided more times than I can count.

NO WORDS!! It's these types of books which I chase, the unexpected, unputdownable, where the outside world ceases to exist, I'm utterly in love with this book!!

I LOVED every minute of 'The Devil's Crown'. It was easy to get into and well written. The plot was intricate, and the pace moved along perfectly. There was angst. There was drama. There was grit. There was a bit of darkness, and to top it all off there were a few smokin' hot sex scenes.
This book ticked all my boxes.

I was in two minds over Alek our dark hero, he was a walking contradiction, we get this fallen from grace scary motherf#cker who ruled with an iron fist, he used to be King of the Russian Mafia, and now we see him clawing his way back up to the top.

z

Delve deeper into his character and we saw a much softer side emerge, to weigh it up he kind of got under my skin, he wasn't all bad. He had so many hidden layers, a devil siting on one shoulder and an angel on the next, he lived in both worlds.
q3 And our heroine, god she came at me out of nowhere, so unexpected, you connect with her character so much, you root for her, you cry for her, you love her. I don't want to divulge too much about her because I don't want to wreck it for you guys that'll read this after me. Just go in blind, don't read reviews incase some spoilers are divulged, I promise you that like me you'll love this book..

I was once feared, respected among this land for being ruthless and cruel. But they haven’t seen anything yet. Love hurts, and now, it’s my turn to hurt love.

You know what I love? Seemingly irredeemable villains. Anti-heroes that you almost don't want to root for and yet you can't help but ultimately fall head over ovaries for. And it just doesn't get any more delicious than Aleksei Popov. The ultimate villain in Bad Saint who discovered he had a soul underneath all of that brutality in Forever My Saint. Now it's no secret that I love me the baddies and Alek was the ultimate baddie. So suffice it to say I was almost rabid for his book from all of the glimpses we got of the man beneath the villain in All The Pretty Things trilogy. But nothing could have prepared me for the full impact of all the things that are Alek Popov.
I wasn’t her Prince Charming. And that’s okay.” I smirk viciously. “I much prefer to be the villain. They have all the fun.”

Now first of all, if you haven't yet read All The Pretty Things trilogy, I HIGHLY recommend that you do. Yes, this is a spin off with a new couple, but there's a lot of story that carries over and you wouldn't have the same appreciation for all those nuances if you haven't read the trilogy first.
You’re magnetic, and you don’t even know it. You’re a villain…who has a heart. And what woman doesn’t want to try to fix a bad man?”

Alek once lost everything for love. His empire and his name all went out in a fiery blaze of bullets and betrayal. But Alek is not the same man he used to be either. Yes, he's still the ruthless killer and calculating criminal. But beneath the cold stare and cigar smoke lies the heart of a man that no one expected, not even the man himself.

He's trying to rebuild his empire, brick by brick, but when your own mother is working against you and your half-brother is determined to see you dead, it's easier said than done.

I'm not going to summarize the book here for you, you really need to experience it for yourself. But what I will tell you, is brace yourself. The Devil's Crown is one epic thrill ride full of twists and turns so dark and depraved, you never see them coming. It's deliciously dark. It's fast-paced and sizzlingly hot. It was all of the things. But ultimately, it was a total page-turner.

Monica James seriously brought her A Game with this story, so prepare to be owned by Alek. The man is an enigma of violence and passion and I couldn't get enough of him. There's just something so utterly broken about him and yet you can't help but want to see him fixed. It's not easy to redeem an ultimate villain like Alek, but damn if James didn't do it. I am utterly desperate for the next book. Like legit desperate. I'm not sure if I'll survive the wait but man was this book worth the pain.

I absolutely LOVEDDDD the All the Pretty Things series, so I was so excited to see that this duet (I think it's a duet?) was about Alek, a pretty prominent character and not-so-good-guy from that trilogy.

Before picking this book up, I definitely recommend you read the initial trilogy first. It's not necessary, but I understood Alek's character so much more than I would have if I didn't already know him and what he went through. Some things Alek does and people he's trusted made me really frustrated, but I had to remember what he had gone through and what was going through his mind. His blind trust of one specific character still makes me annoyed with him, but moving past that, Alek is a very bad man learning some of his humanity while trying to steal his kingdom back.

If you like romances about bad guys, this book is definitely for you. Alek is used to getting what he wants and he's determined to take back his power from his brother. I enjoyed how the romance kind of started out as a love triangle and definitely involves a forbidden aspect to it. Every character in this book had secrets, so you had no idea who you could trust or what people were going to do. I did think the internal monologue of Alek became a bit repetitive and would go on a little too long, but then the action and storyline would pick up again.

The romance in here is angsty, angry, and dangerous, which is everything I expect from a Monica James book. Of course, this ended on a cliffhanger since it's only book one, but we don't have to wait long for book two, which is releasing in September.

The devil’s crown is a spin-off from All the pretty things trilogy we follow Alek who is one of the main characters in the previous trilogy and what happens after the ending of Forever My Saint.

I loved Alek so much he’s such a mysterious character. he changed so much after what happened and his true self comes out that he’s not the monster everybody thinks he is and yes he did a lot of bad things but he regrets so much and he tries to be a good man and I loved that about him.

His relationship with the orphanage and Iriana was so beautiful. Alek’s character is one of these characters that show his love to others in his special way and he cares so much about the people he loves even when he didn’t show it. I liked Ella so much her story was heartbreaking what she did was so emotional.

It was so fast-paced I finished it in one day I couldn’t put it because I want to know what happens next and there is a lot of plot twists in this book I didn’t see it coming. After I finished it I started the second book immediately because of this painful cliffhanger and the end. I love this series so much♥️.

Monica James sure knows how to make you love a Villain!! I went into this story without any background knowledge and let me tell you something: I fell for these characters hard and fast. It was unexpected, thrilling , and knowing that you got to witness the ups and downs with these characters, made the story that much better.

What would you do if you had so much power, you were feared with just the whisper of your name being spoken? That is what life was like for Aleksei and he ruled his kingdom with a brutal iron fist. But you know what they say, what goes up must come down and Alek took a hard fall from grace. Now determined to get back his empire and rule again, one must do wicked things to reach his goal and who’s more better for the job than a skillful sinner?

giphy-6.gif

Aleksei was not your typical hero and I really liked that. This man was extremely flawed and he's done things in his past that will literally make you want to set him on fire but you know what? He owns up to it and he knows exactly the type of man that he is. Without ever having read the All the pretty things trilogy, I went into this story expecting a somewhat messed up hero with a dark past but I got so much more than that. We witnessed his struggles, his quest for vengeance, redemption, and we saw a man that despite all of the chaos, was a fierce protector.

I don’t want to give anything away in this story so I’m just going to say that if you’ve read the previous trilogy, then you’re going to fall in love with this book even more. I cannot wait to see what this author has in store for us with part two because I KNOW we will be saying “All hail the King".

This book was everything I asked for and more.

Aleksei Popov is as bad as a man can be. He did unredeemable things and hurt a lot of innocent people. Wherever he goes pain and death fallows along.

𝑫𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒉 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒑𝒂𝒊𝒏 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒇𝒐𝒍𝒍𝒐𝒘 𝒎𝒆

He once was the man who ruled with an iron fist, now he is forced to hide in the shadows. His only purpose is killing his half-brother and mother for taking everything away from him.
After loving the only woman who did not love him back, he did not expect to be able to form a connection with another one. Until he laid eyes on Sister Arabella. An American who transferred to help the sisters with the children. Now he will not only seek vengeance but built a kingdom for his new queen.

𝑰 𝒏𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒔𝒂𝒘 𝒉𝒆 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒈. 𝑺𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒅𝒔𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒅 𝒎𝒆 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒆𝒔𝒕 𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒚.

Monica James has a way to make the perfect anti-hero of all times. To say I love Alek would be an understatement. I FUCKING ADORE HIM!!!
It’s true he did very bad things but he is redeemable. He has a big heart and he is doing his best to help the people he cares about and seek forgiveness for his deeds.

𝑭𝒐𝒓 𝒎𝒚 𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒓𝒆 𝒍𝒊𝒇𝒆, 𝑰’𝒗𝒆 𝒃𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝒔𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝒂𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒗𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒂𝒊𝒏, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑰 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒃𝒆𝒆𝒏. 𝑩𝒖𝒕 𝒃𝒆𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒅 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝒎𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒓, 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒍𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝒂 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒍𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒚.

This was EPIC!! I honestly don't know what i'm gonna do with myself now. The wait is gonna kill me.

The Devil's Crown is part one of two and also, a spin-off from All the Pretty Things written by the talented Monica James. This story is a unique, thrilling and completely captivating read. It kept me on my toes and had me constantly questioning everything. It's full of twists and turns, angst, suspense and heaps of heat. It gave me everything in a book that my little heart desires. I absolutely loved every single second of it.

Alex was once untouchable. He was the king of the Russian mafia. But then he became blinded by love, and his world came crashing down around him. Now he spends his time lurking in the shadows slowly plotting his revenge. Nothing will stop him in his quest for vengeance on his half-brother and mother. He will see them punished and reclaim his rightful place on the throne.

I loved Alex. He is the perfect anti-hero. He has done some dark and despicable things, but he also has a softer side to him. He is loyal and protective to a fault when it comes to those he loves. One of those being the little girl Irina from the orphanage. The relationship between those two was so cute and sweet. It was completely swoon worthy in my book.

His relationship with Ella (the new love interest) was pure fire. She was for sure his perfect match. He pushed her and she pushed back. She challenged him every step of the way with her defiance. Their chemistry was electric. All of the dirty talk and explosive scenes between them absolutely burned up the pages. I loved this perfect pairing.

All in all, I highly recommend The Devil's Crown. I love a book that keeps you guessing, and this one definitely did just that. If you love twisted stories full of angst, badass alphas, suspense and some steamy hot scenes, this book is the one for you. I'm so glad that I decided to read this book and can't wait to see what happens next! 5 stars and more!

❝ So this will go one of two ways. You tell me where that piece of shit is, and I kill you. Or you tell me where that piece of shit is, and I kill you. The choice is yours.❞
The balls on this man. Shit, Monica James knows how to deliver. Woo-wee!

Before I even begin this review, I wanted to inform readers that prior to diving into this dark, gritty, suspenseful romance novel—if you haven't done so already I would highly recommend that you please please read the 'All The Pretty Things Trilogy'. 'The Devil's Crown' is the spin-off and reading the ATPT series beforehand will allow you to get a better grasp and understanding of Alek and how he plays into everything.

Now getting back to this book… holy shit! This topped 'All The Pretty Things' in every single way. No joke.

The spin-off starts off where its predecessor ended, following Aleksei Popov's fall from 'grace'. Once a King of a notorious empire in Russia who struck fear in many, he now lurks in the shadows (more so an orphanage that he sees as his sanctuary) seeking vengeance against his half-brother Serg and co-conspirator mother, Zoya, who took everything away.
❝ I hate to disappoint you, but if you’re looking for a story with a hero, then you best turn back now. This is the point of no return.❞
… and there sure isn't! Aleksei is a known villain and as any villain would do, he will do everything in his power to get his crown back. Lie. Steal. Cheat. Murder. Leading readers to be blessed with the many twists and turns, action, suspense, redemption, oozing tension and everything else in between that the author is known for. That also includes her ability to successfully introduce characters and provide insight on their back stories which includes the lead heroine.

For reasons that are later explained, Sister Arabella is gradually introduced when seeking refuge in the orphanage, moving the King in ways he cannot describe. The somewhat meek, shy heroine who transferred from America to aid the Sisters in raising the children left a lasting impression and I would deem as the perfect example of not to judge a book by its cover. As the story progresses, her solemn vow and commitment to the Lord, Arabella becomes conflicted by her sinful thoughts and feelings towards Alek and after their brief introduction, the fallen King has found his purpose. Kill his half brother, make the city his again and establish a new kingdom fit for a Queen, his epitome of a femme fatale. And ensure there is only one God Sister Arabella will worship before on her knees. Him.
❝ The devil lay dormant for a while , humoring me because he knew we were cut from the same cloth, and sooner or later, I would need to feed the darkness inside me.❞
This compelling read was a game changer and it's evident the author’s writing style has improved drastically since ATPT. There's more depth to her characters, development, and solid storyline that easily absorbs the reader to dive right into the captivating romance. Yet as much as I rant and rave about this, I will admit it wasn't perfect. There were particular scenes that were predictable and specific characters motives that were pretty obvious and straightforward. Unfortunately I can't dive too much into it without spoiling key components that made this story possible but overall I am glad to say it did not diminish my phenomenal reading experience.

In closing, I would consider ‘The Devil’s Crown’ Monica James best work yet. It was far more than difficult not to be invested and consumed with Alec’s journey in reclaiming his throne while fighting the sinful temptation known as Sister Arabella. With the sequel in tow, I seriously seriously can't wait to see what the author has in store for us.

⭐️ 5+ "краса́вица" Stars ⭐️
WOW! I'm without words right now! Seriously, The Devil’s Crown Part 1 is so twisted, sizzling hot and yes... romantic! This story truly combines all the elements I live for in romance books. Monica James did such a tremendous job to give Alek the story he deserved. This anti-hero is just PERFECTION on all levels. His darkness mixed with his new conscience battling together make him so complex, but also so much more appealing. And did I say that the novel is written completely in Alek's POV! Oh. Hell. Yeah.

Even if it’s not required, I would recommend reading the All the Pretty Things Trilogy before this book to better understand Alek and his background. That man was considered the villain in that trilogy, but there’s still something so compelling about him and the magnetism he exudes. He's imperious and sinister! Needless to say I was ecstatic to finally get his own story. The Devil’s Crown Part 1 starts his quest to return to the top of the Russian underworld after his fall from grace. He's seeking revenge on his half-brother that helped to destroy is empire. As much as this ruthless and dangerous man does despicable things, he also does so many great and good things. I love that he’s not all black and navigate between right and wrong. The complexity of him is what makes me admire him even more as a hero.

His relationship with little Irina was absolutely breathtaking and so cute. That little girl only trusts this big bad man and to see him so attached to her…*swoon*. What can I say about his new love interest? Ella isn’t the heroine you would expect at first view, but OMG! The fire she got and all the defiance she shows toward Alek is powerful and electric! Together they share some explosive and carnal moments that burned up my kindle. All the dirty talking and filthiness of those encounters were addictive. This couple is so well matched and I’m obsessed with them. They are LIFE!

The intrigue had me so invested with the unexpected twists and turns providing sometimes viciously disturbing scenes. The Devil's Crown Part 1 is without a doubt my favorite read this year for the rush of adrenaline I got and the intricacy of the characters. What's next for the sequel has me dying to get my hands on that story right now, but at least the wait won't be too long with part 2 releasing in September.

What’s this book about? (I'm trying to give as little spoilers as possible)
Spin-off to All The Pretty Things Trilogy. Alek is a shell of what he used to be… Materially speaking. He’s returned to the place that he’s always found sanctuary in. He’s dancing with the demons in his mind. They tell him to end his enemies. They tell him… Break her.

Monica James does it again. Her male leads are incomparable. Alek is an incredible lead that I would follow anywhere. He’s the anti-hero I didn’t know I needed. He breaks my heart with his heartbreak at every turn of the page. He had me hooked from the first chapter and I didn’t want to let go. He’s bad, but so bad, that he ends up having a tiny bit of good in him, just the right amount that makes him so redeemable. I can’t go into details, but there are lots of twists and turns in this story. There were numerous shocking moments that had me like WTF. There were endless heartfelt moments. There were also countless badass moments where our bad guy fought to defend the ones that can’t defend themselves. Ultimately, Alek has a heart in his chest. And it beats for the right people.
I recommend this to everyone who loves the All The Pretty Things Trilogy, bad guys and intriguing leading ladies.

Tbh ella seemed more like a background character cuz hero loved willow throughout the whole book. It didnt even feel like he wants Ella, their relationship was so forced cuz Hero always thought about willow and also admitted he loved her till the end. He even spend time with Renta (another girl) more than the heroine which is why i saw ella was a background character and didnt seem like a heroine. Even in this one Willow seemed to be the heroine. The hero cant get over her.

**I received an ARC for a honest review. ⁣

Deserves more than 5 stars. WOW! I was literally at the edge of my seat throughout the whole book. Every villian have a story to share and Alek's is one you do not want to miss. Monica did such a PHENOMENAL job. This is probably my favorite from Monica. The twist and turns got me speechless. Don't get me started with the steamy scenes. ⁣

I can't tell you how many times I got teary eyes. (I was at work reading. Didn't want to get caught. 😅) I LOVED Saint too much to care for Alek, but Alek won me over. Words can't describe how much I came to adored and loved him. He was totally a different man, but still freaking ruthless. The way how Alek love was so touching. It was definitely a dark read, but somehow I don't think it's as dark as All the Pretty Things Trilogy. I'm not gonna go into details because I don't want to spoil anything. JUST KNOW THAT YOU NEED TO PICKUP THIS BOOK. I NEED BOOK 2 RIGHT NOW!!! Lol ⁣

Um wow. Yep. That's the word that came to mind when I was done reading this first part of The Devil's Crown. If you've read the All the Pretty Things Trilogy, you'll remember Aleksei. He's not a good guy in it, nor is he really a good guy here in his own story either. What he is, however, is much more interesting than he was previously, as someone has come into his life that is making him wish for a bit of, if not redemption, then perhaps someone to just love him, to see some kind of good in him, even if he doesn't think, or isn't sure there is, good in him.

I won't spoil, I'll just say that this dark and twisty first part of Aleksei and Ella's story is first rate. I am dying to know what happens next, if Alek gets his woman, if he gets his empire back, if the two make it to the other side the way Willow and Saint did.

Holy fucking hell... I'm not sure where to begin.

Firstly, this is a spin-off to All The Pretty Things Trilogy and best read after that series, in my opinion.

I knew going into this book that it was going to ruin me and ruin me it did... In all the best ways! I am a sucker for dark romances. It's a g0-to obsession for me and this was ALL THE THINGS when it comes to dark romances. It had everything I love about the sub-genre. It was dark, twisted, full of mystery and suspense, and had my mind on complete overdrive and my spine shivering.

I've loved Aleksei Popov from the start and his story is one that's been highly anticipated for me and it met every expectation, if anything, it excelled from my expectations. I was completely blindsided and did not see half the shit that happened coming. I won't dive in deep, but I will say that Ella and Aleksei chemistry is off the charts and their story will have you bent out of shape, your mind on overdrive, your jaw hitting the floor more times than you can count and your heart pounding out of your chest. Aleksei Popov is a monster, a man to be feared and he is feared by many, but what Monica delivers within these pages will shock the hell out of you in all the best ways!

Once again, Monica James, you've gone and outdid yourself and delivered an outstanding, all-consuming, twisted, completely depraved and mind-fuckingly beautiful start to what I know will be an EPIC love story. Your ability to paint a picture in my heads with your words blows my mind. The Devil's Crown is an example of everything I love about this sub-genre. I am excited and scared shitless to see what you have up your sleeve for part two!

OH... MY... GOD!!
This is the story of THE anti-hero of all anti-heros. The villian and the monster is now the guy we are rooting for. Monica James delivers yet another page turning dark romance that needs to be recommended to anyone who loves dark romances! Aleksei a mafia “god” turned good? His story began in All The Pretty Things trilogy(definitely read the ATPT series before reading this book!) when he truly was the Villian and now he is the anti-hero. Alek is Monica’s best character yet! Alek has lost everything he has basically ever known and now is trying to overcome and rebuild his world. Now add the beautiful Sister Arabella, the story’s herione into the picture. Ella is everything Alek needs and wants. Ella and Alek have intense chemistry that pulls you right in. I absolutely loved that we got to see more of Alek and who he really is as a character in his own story and not just as a villian in someone else’s. I am so excited for part 2 and I highly recommend reading this story if you are looking for a page turner with twists, lots of chemistry and action!

Thank you Monica for the opportunity to read this story!

5 The King Will Rise Crowns

Monica James has crafted the most devious, the most depraved, the most dangerously addictive dark romance that I have read this year! I was spell-bound from the moment I opened this book and read the first word until the last moment of this story. This is without a doubt my favorite book from Monica to date and I loved every sinister minute of it!!!

20200715-221000-0000

Aleksei Popov is a dangerous man he is what many would consider a monster, there’s no two ways about it, that is who he is. He was once the King of the Russian Mafia but due to a fate beyond his control he was unceremoniously decrowned and left with nothing. Left to survive this world with less than zero he has remained in the shadows living on the outside just trying to survive. This man may not be King anymore, but he still has his intellect, determination, and his unending desire and thirst for revenge, with a charisma unlike any other that has saved him on more than one occasion.

Ella is a woman who’s made many wrong choices in life. She’s tried to make a better existence for herself but has trusted too many of the wrong men and was left to try and survive amongst the devil’s in disguise. She awakens a need and hunger in Alek that he thought had long since been extinguished. The pull between them is instant and intense leaving them both struggling with these emotions that they were not prepared for. Ella brings out the dominant need in Alek to own, control and make Ella submit to him and only him. But Ella has a mind of her own and strong sense of self not allowing her to just succumb to the whims of Alek. Their banter and chemistry are off the charts hot with a connection the burns from the pages.

I love dark romance it’s one of my absolute favorite troupes, it allows you to embrace the darkness and deviance that comes with these types of stories, and Monica James Slayed it!!! Bless me Father, for I have sinned- the fallen king and Monica James have dragged me into the darkness, and I am going willingly. The Devil's Crown is consuming, completely dark, depraved, and deliciously titillating. Truly a passionate and intense triumph, this is Monica's best work yet and will leave you desperate for the finale.

Aleksei was once a monster, or perhaps he still is- he’s lived in darkness, done horrible things, and still craves the darkness. But, the events of All The Pretty Things have left him changed- in more ways than one. Once the King of the Russian Mafia, he now hides in the shadows waiting to exact his revenge on his half-brother who has dethroned him. He’s lost his power, his influence, his money, his allies- and as we know from All the Pretty Things, he’s lost the woman he loves, to the man she loves. He turns to his only comfort, his thirst for blood, the darkness that can’t seem to escape his soul. But his status is not the only thing that has changed- this is man conflicted, a man at battle with the person he was and the person others think he MIGHT be, a man unnerved by the rare glimmers of humanity that keep seeping out from his psyche.

It’s easy for him not to confront this tension when his only aim is revenge, but wrinkles in his plan put others issues...other desires...in his path-a haggard survivor of his brother’s evil, a tiny and abused orphan, an orphanage full of pious nuns, and a smokeshow nun that is his siren. They not only derail his focus, they confound his heart and paranoia as they tug at his humanity. And somehow, in the sanctity of a familiar church sanctuary, Aleksei finds his salvation. But his salvation is not in God, but in the soul of Sister Arabella (Ella).

Ella is an anomaly- a stunning beauty in a nun habit whose interests might be more secular than expected. She’s a mystery, and one that Aleksei can’t turn away from, as the attraction and need boils over between them. Like Aleksei, she’s fallen from grace, her choices leading her to a life she never expected or wanted. And, with the entire story being told from Aleksei’s POV, she’s a mystery to us, too. She’s drawn to Aleksei’s darkness, but she sees the goodness in him. Their attraction is carnal, visceral, unstoppable- and each begin to awaken parts of their souls that they’ve long since shut down, their connection soothing the shreds that others have made in their hearts. For a brilliant man, Aleksei often doesn’t see what is right in front of him, but this is really part of the journey- he’s distracted, not only by those around him, but by his own metaphysical exploration. If Willow was the spark that catalyzed the change in Aleksei, then Ella is the oxygen not only sustaining but stocking the flame. But Aleksei’s past is not done with him, and in a world of deceit and blood, he’ll have to make hard decisions about who to trust and what path to choose- revenge or love?

This story is INTENSE- the plot is suspenseful and intricate, the characters are nuanced and compelling, and the romance….oh my...the romance is hot, depraved, sinfully seductive and captivating. The emotions are raw, viscerally experienced. And the tone- oh my, this is such a great example of author’s using tone to drive a story. The juxtaposition of the religious, the sacred and the dark and depraved in this story sets a tonal mood that has your heart pounding the entire time.

While this story is action packed, SO twisty and surpring and suspenseful, this is really a story about a man’s existential conflict- a man reconciling his past and future while trying to navigate the present, a man trying to decipher his emotional contradictions, a man at odds with his own heart and soul, a man learning that you can be a good man even if you do bad things, a man discovering that darkness and light can co-exist, that perhaps one makes the other stronger. This metamorphosis began in the pages of the former trilogy, but the impact is really explored here. Monica does a brilliant job of unpacking this complex characters thread by thread- creating a narrative that is driven not by the action itself but rather by the evolving reactions Aleksei has to those actions. This is about his redemption, and at the end, we will know who this man is, who he intends to be. The question is what does that mean for everything else. The jaw-dropping, devastating cliffhanger will be a game changer. Our characters finally came to terms with themselves, found their redemption, but the impact of those decisions and this shattering cliffhanger are going to test their new found sense of self- and at what cost? I need Book 2 now!

Monica James brought the worst of dark, depraved and dangerous romance in The Devil's Crown: Part One. And my dark heart couldn't be any more satisfied. She delivered all the nail biting and jaw dropping suspense. And she definitely didn't hold back the filthy forbidden passion.

Aleksei Popov is a monster. There is no other way to describe him. Once he was the king of Russian mafia. But certain twists of fate has left him dethroned and fighting for survival. He may be powerless but he still has his tenacity, ruthlessness and need for revenge. And he won't stop till he kills his vile step brother and get back his rights. But certain beauty will infiltrate his life. And Sister Arabella aka Ella isn't someone he should corrupt and hurt. Someone is going to die in this battle. Who will it be?

Why ..why..just why I love antiheroes so much? There is something about their inhumanity that makes their human acts even more charming and delectable. Aleksei is not a good man. A cold hearted murderer. A killer and corrupt person. He did every shameful and cruel things possible. But he has a good heart. That takes care of an orphanage. That wants to protect Ella at any cost. He is a beast, a dominant addicted to power trips and without any conscience mostly. But his kindness and loyalty and dedication is epic. Irresistible. And Ella rekindled the need to be a better person in him. This woman is a conundrum. She can be shy and hesitant and scared of Alek's monster. But she is a fierce, sassy and bold woman too. She revels in her sins . Her courage and strength is absolutely amazing.

And their chemistry! Wow I just couldn't handle the intensity. It's explosive, it's deviant, it's sinful and it's precursor to something soul deep. They cannot possibly have a future together . They are literally enemies. But they have this gut wrenching and heartbreaking connection that wants to defy all odds. The story line kept delivering punches after punches to my heart and soul till I was completely ruined. I hate Monica James a bit for that evil ending. The adrenaline rush almost killed me!

The Devil's Crown: Part One by Monica James is a must read for any dark romance lover. Be ready to get wrecked and awed by Alek and Ella's mindblowing story. Nothing can prepare you and save your heart!

"I'm not a bad guy. I'm worse." 😍🔥🥵

I FLOVE a good anti-hero, and boy does Alek fit the bill to a T. Dark, depraved and complicated, this man is everything I can't help but root for in a villainous hero. And the heroine? I couldn't have picked a better match for Alek even if I tried. Monica James is about to blow minds, and make you crave the dark and delicious side of romance, all with a pretty little smile on her face.

Sign me TF up for book #2, because I NEED to know how this story ends more than I need my next breath.

The Beginning of Alek's Return - MINDBLOWING

All The Pretty Thing Series introduced Aleksei Popov, King of the Russian Mafia. For this very reason I strongly recommend that this series be read prior to commencing THE DEVIL'S CROWN. It will give the background to Alek and the reasons as to why he is now the man he has become. With that said now onto my review of THE DEVIL'S CROWN.

"I hate to disappoint you, but if you're looking for a story with a hero, then you best turn back now. This is the point of no return."

OMG!!! THIS BOOK IS EVERYTHING!!!! MONICA JAMES YOU JUST KEEP GETTING BETTER ... AND DARKER!!!

"Once upon a time, I thought that maybe I could do this thing, this living a "normal" life. The devil lay dormant for a while, humoring me because he knew we were cut from the same cloth, and sooner or later, I would need to feed the darkness inside me. Mayhem, power, and control are what course through my veins and what made me a victorious leader. And now, I want my fucking crown back."

Aleksei Popov is a master of villainy. He's a liar, a cheat, a murderer ... a monster. A man who knows what he wants and will stop at nothing to achieve it ... no matter the consequences. No matter how much I wanted to hate him, I couldn't help but love him ... he won my heart. Alek is out for revenge and is determined to obtain it, whoever stands in his way does not stand a chance - especially Serg, his half-brother who took everything. Nothing is too evil for Alek, his thinking is diabolical, his actions, unspeakable.

"I was once feared, respected among this land for being ruthless and cruel. But they haven't seen anything yet. Love hurts, and now, it's my time to hurt love."

Alek fell irrevocably in love with Willow, but she belonged to Saint. Now another has caught his eye. This woman is untouchable, unobtainable, someone he shouldn't corrupt ... but Alek is NOT a good man. She lights a fire in him, makes him feel as he never has before. Maybe there is hope for Alek yet. However, she is not as she appears to be, and the truth will change everything ... or does it? She's brave, strong, courageous, and will willingly sacrifice herself for everything Alek desires. Their chemistry is palpable, but is chemistry enough to keep them together?

"She may think she doesn't want me to break her, but she's wrong. And I don't want that for her. I want her to be the strong one and stay away because I can't. ... I want her, and that's the problem. I can't have her."

Twists and turns, lies, deception, betrayal, murder, and romance ... Monica weaves a masterful story that had me mesmerised from the very first page. It is intense, depraved, heartbreaking, mindblowing, and spellbinding - it is Monica James at her outstanding best. Her writing knows no boundaries when it comes to the lengths of darkness she expounds. When it comes to those wicked, sexy, sensual scenes ... OMG, pass the holy water, please!!!! And that ending ... let's just say book two cannot come soon enough!!!!

"I was dead, but here I am, resurrected and ready to live this life reborn."

THE DEVIL'S CROWN is my #1 read for 2020. It has everything a woman's heart desires:
* a sexy, swoonworthy anti hero
* a strong, brave, sassy heroine
* a mesmerising mindblowing storyline
* twists and turns that will have your head spinning
* so many WTF moments
* darkness, depravity, tenderness, love

SHEER BRILLIANCE!!!!

Confession: I did not read Pretty Little Things BUT I got through this just fine and got the just of what happened in the other book(s).

The Devil's Crown is grimy (in a good way), captivating, suspenseful, and HOT!

You will be sucked in from the very first few pages. Monica kept me on the edge of my seat with this one and there were times where I felt I was tensing up because I just didn't know what to expect!

And can I just say that I love Alek. He comes off as this asshole but he has a soft side and I loved seeing that from him throughout the book. I don't want to give anymore away but just know that this one is a MUST READ for 2020!

Monica James has blown me away with Aleksei’s first book. I bow down to you! Alek’s story was more than I could have asked for. I wasn’t sure what I was getting into as I signed up blind and I am shook. You have taken this anti-hero and made me fall so hard for him. At the end of Saint and Willow’s trilogy I knew I wanted Alek to find his HEA. He’s got a long way to go to get his happiness. It is just the beginning of his journey but I am anticipating the upcoming books because i know it’s gonna be one crazy ride but oh so worth it. The author has slayed me and the next book in Alek’s series cannot come soon enough! This is an epic, edge of your seat, unputdownable read!!

If I could give this book more than 5 stars, I would.

Alek stole my heart in Willow and Saints trilogy All The Pretty Things. I fell in love with the monster he was then, but the man now? Bitch that mother fucker straight up snatched my soul.

Aleks story was NEVER going to be easy. I knew going in to expect the unexpected, but even then I could not have anticipated the reality of all that is the man behind the monster. Going in you have to be aware that he has never been and will not ever be the good guy. He is if nothing else true to himself so you should know now that he is very much the villain of his own story.
He's the kind of character I want to sink my claws into and peel back those layers to see what hides beneath the surface. There is so much more to him than even he realises. He's cold and methodical and yet he's torn by his past actions. He is selfish to the core and yet he cares deeply for others. He is the biggest contradiction I've ever read. He's a beautiful disaster. The kind that will chew you up leaving you raw and exposed. Oh and he's very aware of that fact.

'I may be standing here, breathing and functioning with a beating heart, but I'm dead inside.'

Despite the horror that comes from him, he is still one of the most intriguing, infuriating and honest characters I have ever read. There is something special about a character so brutally honest it hurts in every way. I rooted for him in Willow and Saints story because despite all he is, he still snatched my attention whenever he appeared. His past, the betrayals.. his need and greed for power. Everything about this man demands your attention and focus when he's around.

Let's just say his leading lady is a fucking snack and she shocked the living lights out of me. I mean when you think Monica can't possibly surprise you more, she whips out a mother fucking Hail Mary and slaps the shit out of you with it for ever thinking otherwise. I died. Like legit cried laughing whilst simultaneously praying for my soul cause lord knows I'm burning in hell for being so amused at the whole situation. PRAYFORME.

'she has given me the greatest gift- sacrificing herself for the people I love'

Let's just say dear sinful Alek met his match in every way and I'm all here for what's to come. That is all I'm saying on the matter of his leading lady because something's are best left a surprise.

The progression of this story is everything because it is so unpredictable. It's like a live wire waiting to go off. The suspense and anticipation are everything because it builds you up to something so unforgettable, I don't think I'm going to ever get over it. With every new revelation comes more secrets and lies. This book has you hook line and sinker from the beginning waiting, wanting and needing more. And just when you think you can't be shocked again, it will happen. It's climactic, gripping and brutally raw. I cried so hard to many times to count because at times it hurt to read his story but I also laughed at all the highly inappropriate outrageous shenanigans that happened. Oh and did I mention the sex? The steam of it all. It's so bad it's good.

"You shouldn't talk with your mouth full, pet" I gently stroke over her chin with my thumb."

I've spent a day trying to write a review that would do this book justice without giving anything away and I know I'm falling short. There honestly isn't enough descriptive words to describe how this book made me feel. Monica is as always true to herself in her writing and in turn true to her character and that shows. Her unique stories and characters are quite literally the gift that keeps giving. I'm not a hard to please reader by any means but this book took me on an emotional rollercoaster that left me rung dry but still wanting more by the end. It's heartbreaking and brutally raw. It's sinful sensual and all kinds of teasing. It's exciting and surprising and so original.

I'm never going to regret being team Alek. Even when I know he's a bad egg. How can I resist him.

I'm going to leave this here for now and come back when I've pulled my head out of the clouds. I'm still suffering a epic book hangover here.

Congratulations if you've made it this far in my rambles.

Side note- this is only book one, his story is not yet finished. So understand Monica is hanging you with a mother of a cliffhanger. Gahhhhhh. It's painful, but I know his story is worth the emotional meltdowns I'll suffer until I get the rest.

•Honest review in exchange of an ARC• The Devils Crown (part 1) will be released July 21•

-The Devils Crown is a duet, however, I highly suggest to read All The Pretty Things trilogy before hand to grasp the story and characters-

How does Ms. James do it? Every book I read from her, I fall more in love with her words, her storylines, and characters.

If you love darker romances with antiheroes turned heroes and sassy heroines that aren’t afraid to give the hero a run for his money... this one is for you!

I’m probably the unpopular opinion here when I say I LOVED Aleksi is All The Pretty Things series and when I found out he was getting his own duet I squealed and stalked Monica on all thing Alek.

Alek and Aribella’s story is a steamy, forbidden page turner. ONE DAY it took me to devour it.

The seductive twists and dangerous turns kept coming and I’m here for it.

Witnessing Alek’s internal battles of good versus evil was inspiring. His growth and development from the trilogy previously stated to the end of part one of The Devil’s Crown is phenomenal. I can’t wait to see what else Alek has in store for us in the second part. I know it’s going to be epic.

This review has taken me days to write. I’m still at a loss for words. The Devil’s Crown was everything I wanted and so much more. The moment I started reading I was completely hooked. I was sucked into this story. If you’ve read the All the Pretty Things trilogy then you know Alek and if you haven’t read the trilogy you are in for one sinful ride.

Alek is a character you want to hate, but you just can’t. Despite who he is and what he has done you can’t help but love him. He just wants his city back, he wants to wear the crown he deserves. He’s cruel, he is a villain, but there is also a softer side to him, a side Willow originally brought out. Now, the heroine….well she was a surprise, in a good way. She is exactly the type of woman that Alek needs and there is some instant chemistry between the two of them and a few kindle melting scenes.

Some old characters make an appearance and I loved those moments. I got the bromance I never knew I wanted and it was perfect. There is a sweet secondary character that will melt your cold black heart, especially in scenes with Alek (you’ll know exactly who I’m talking about if you’ve read the story), but I truly hope there is more of them!

The Devil’s Crown is action packed and will have you reading with your jaw on the floor a majority of the book and in tears towards the end. It is dark and twisted. If this is just part one I can’t wait to see what is coming in part two! The Devil’s Crown is a MUST READ and one of my TOP READS of 2020.
