Pastor Bob Roberts Jr. seems to spend his entire public career promoting an idea he knows is false. As a self-proclaimed evangelical Christian himself, he must accept the Bible as truth, and at the end of his video ‘Why Evangelicals Hate Muslims: An Evangelical Minister’s Perspective’ for the Emir-Stein Center, he says that Christians must follow the Gospel, all of it. Why a Pastor who recognises this would spend his time trying to legitimise a false religion is a worrying question to ask, but this is far from the most damaging activity Roberts undertakes.
The entire video is based on a faulty premise. According to Roberts, the question the video poses ‘may sound like a negative thing, but unfortunately it’s true’. Who says? Well, Bob Roberts, of course. He says that ‘[our] own research says that 57% of evangelicals have a negative view of Muslims’. His 57% is substituted for evangelicals across the board, and even more startlingly, ‘a negative view’ is substituted for ‘hate’, which completely changes the premise. Also, any Christian who is faithful to scripture and professes Jesus is Lord, which is the qualifier, loves even his or her enemies, and prays even for persecutors, as opposed to hating them. I might as well entitle this article ‘Why does Pastor Bob Roberts Jr. lie so much?’ without giving evidence for the claim that he lies in the first place.
Roberts makes three clear points in the video. After getting past a facile deer-hunting analogy which does not legitimise any of his points (aside from that fact he is an ignoramus for assuming the imam would shout ‘Allahu akbar’ while hunting), Roberts claims that evangelicals hate Muslims because they do not know any. I believe this is a complete projection of Bob Roberts’ own prejudiced experiences rather than an accurate representation of evangelicals or Christians in general, but there is abundant evidence that the claim is false, since the usual intention of evangelicals, specifically, in speaking about Islam is to reach Muslims or tell others about how to reach Muslims with the Gospel. But if evangelicals are reaching Muslims, they must know some. This shows that an across-the-board assertion about a lack of contact is not logically possible to sustain.
Roberts’ grand solution to the great divide that the Emir-Stein Center professes to be seeking to end is to have discussions with Muslims. The examples he provides of Christian families speaking about how similar the Muslim families they meet are to them are irrelevant; how does this legitimise Islam as a peaceful way of life? The only way to differentiate between Muslims or Christians who claim to be such is to see if they are acting according to scripture. We find in Surah 98:6 that ‘Surely those who became infidels, from the People of the Book and polytheists, will abide in the fire of hell forever. Those are the worst of the creatures’ and in Surah 5:51; ‘O you who have believed, do not take the Jews and the Nasara (Christians) as friends. They are friends to one another. And whoever among you takes them as friends, so surely he is of them’. In light of the certainty that some Muslims will take these statements seriously and act upon them, those friendly Muslim families are hardly a fair representation of how Muslims are prescribed to act by their own holy book.
Whether those families are ‘just as scared of ISIS as we [the Christian family] are’ is also irrelevant, if the people of whom the Muslims (and Christians) are scared are doing things that are justified in Islam. Roberts then claims that ‘more Muslims are persecuted by the extremists than any other group’. This is actually testimony to the authority of the Qur’an when it discusses hypocrites, a group that includes those who do not go to war for Allah: ‘And that he might know the hypocrites, and it was said to them, “Come, engage in war for the sake of Allah, or contribute.” They said, “If we knew how to engage in war, we would have followed you.” They are closer on that day to infidelity than to faith. They say with their mouths what is not in their hearts, and Allah knows best what they hide.’ (3:167)
The perfect, direct, unchangeable, eternal, perfectly preserved word of Allah commands both Muhammad and Muslims to kill hypocrites. In Surah 9:73, Allah commands Muhammad: ‘O you prophet, perform jihad against the infidels and the hypocrites, and be harsh with them. And their abode will be hell, and evil is the final place’. We find commands for Muslims to kill hypocrites in 33:60-61: ‘If the hypocrites and those who have a disease in their heart and the agitators in the city do not desist, we will surely arouse you against them. Then they will not be your neighbors in it except for a little while. They are cursed wherever they are caught, seized and killed, slaughtering.’ Those Muslim families who court relationships with Christians would certainly be considered friends with them, and are therefore hypocrites whom the Qur’an says should be executed.
The second reason that evangelicals hate Muslims, according to Roberts, is lack of understanding about the end times. This is perplexing; this could not possibly cause a rationally thinking evangelical to hate a Muslim, let alone a majority of them, or as Roberts claims, all of them. Evangelicals do not agree with the premise that Islam is true, so arguments over end-time prophecy from an Islamic perspective would be irrelevant anyway.
The ultimate insult from Pastor Bob Roberts comes in his third point as to why evangelicals apparently hate Muslims: ‘we’ve rejected the Gospel’. I’m sure that as an evangelical Christian, Roberts would acknowledge the evangelical Christian belief that the ultimate showing of love would be risking everything to show someone Christ, and never letting up in trying to help someone find Jesus. Also, by ignoring the problem of Islam, we are allowing people to believe evil is good, such as killing or subjugating unbelievers, without challenge. Father Zakaria Botros, a Coptic Orthodox priest who has a $60 million bounty on his head from Al Qaeda, says ‘We should not flatter people at the expense of truth’. The first step to opening a Muslim person’s heart to Christ is to explain why Islam is incorrect, before preaching the Gospel. Do not fall for this very low guilt-tripping tactic; no one who has watched Roberts’ video here has considered Christianity, he has just given them ample material to further silence Christian voices from preaching truth.
Rather than turn to the Lord to atone for the errors of his ways and learn the truth, Pastor Roberts has turned to the Emir-Stein Center to virtue signal and throw all, yes all, evangelicals under the bus. It is interesting that a channel that claims to be bridging divides would be so heinously bigoted against an entire group rather than host genuinely positive, helpful discussions between representative thinkers.

Bob Roberts insults and slanders millions of very sweet people who take the words ‘Love thine enemies’ very seriously.
The Koran is no small threat to Christians. The Koran has in fact been largely designed to incite violence against Christians. The example of this is the KEY VERSE of the Koran … K. 9.29 a verse of absolute intolerance and brutality:
“Fight (to the death = q-t-l) those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the PEOPLE of the BOOK (BIBLE), until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves HUMBLED.”
The humiliation and defeat of Christians by lethal warfare is demanded by Allah in his eternal words.
Does Roberts even think about this? Who is he working for?

Note to Isaac Marshall on the use of ‘infidel’.
I personally believe we should NEVER use the word ‘infidel’, because it does not convey the meaning of the Arabic and Muslim terms that are filled with a vicious hatred and disdain.
‘Infidel’ almost sounds cute … but DISBELIEVER is not cute.
You will find, if you look, that practically NO Muslims will ever use ‘infidel’ or ‘UN-believer’ when writing in English. They almost UNIVERSALLY use ‘DIS-believer’, since it is a nearer translation of ‘KAFIR’ (those who intentionally and insidiously ‘cover’ the ‘truth’ that Mohammed is a prophet).
We should use the Arabic word ‘KAFIR’, because it embarrasses Muslims who think we do not know the word, and do not think we are aware of the great hatred packed into the word ‘KAFIR’.
The word ‘KAFIR’ is actually so embarrassing to Muslims, that few use it even when talking to other Muslims. It is like using the ‘N’ word in our culture. Some Muslims have advised other Muslims not to say it. THAT is why we should say ‘kafir’ often.
We should use the word ‘KAFIR’ and put (disbeliever) in brackets after it.
If you say ‘KAFIR’ to a Muslim, they cannot hide the canonical HATRED that they are commanded to directe against disbelievers.
If you say ‘KAFIR’ Islamic hatred is exposed.
The single word KAFIR refutes everything that Bob Roberts is claiming.
Isaac Marshall says
I accept the reasoning behind that. I will endevour to use the original ‘kafir’ or ‘disbeliever’ in future. The reason I use infidel was directly from Usama Dakdok’s ‘The Generous Qur’an’, but it has become a lightened term in our culture, so that’s a good point.

Pastor Bob Roberts Jr. is asking the wrong question. He should ask:
Do Muslims Hate Evangelical Christians?
mortimer says
JL, I do not disagree with Roberts about being nice to people, thoughtful and hospitable. I doubt Roberts will get similar treatment from the Muslims.
The New Testament says we should be hospitable. However, Muslims often see our kindness as ‘Allah is forcing the kafirs to be submissive to us’.
On the other hand, some Muslims raised to hate kafirs are surprised at the niceness of the kafirs once they get to know them.
Ex-Muslims often say that Christians have been nicer to them than the Muslim they knew. They are shocked to see Christian men and women mingling and acting in a civilized, respectful and kindly manner to one another.
James Lincoln says
Good points made, mortimer.
David says
Men and women mixing together amiably? (Heaven forbid!)

The mullahs whom Roberts believes are his ‘friends’ are commanded in the Koran 24 times not to be the friend of a KAFIR. Does Roberts know that?
-Sahih Bukhari records that Abu ad-Darda’ said, “We smile in the face of some people although our hearts curse them.”
-Ibn Kathir and his commentary on chapter 3 verse 28 of the Quran:
“BELIEVERS ARE ALLOWED TO SHOW FRIENDSHIP TO THE DISBELIEVERS OUTWARDLY, BUT NEVER INWARDLY. For instance, Al-Bukhari recorded that Abu Ad-Darda’ said, “We smile in the face of some people ALTHOUGH OUR HEARTS CURSE THEM.””

I’m a born again sinner saved only by the blood of Christ which was shed on the blood. I am only justified through Him, and anything good that is of me comes from Him. I do not know a single brother or sister personally who hates Muslims. Indeed, I stand with persecuted brothers and sisters in Pakistan, and together we work to evangelize those caught in the blindness of Islam. We do not hate, but love them and some have willingly laid down their lives for them.
We hate their religion. We hate their evil deeds. But we love them. This “pastor” does not speak for evangelical Christians. I do feel uneasy around Muslims because I know what their religion teaches and have seen their works. So I will always be on guard. But I do not hate them. I love them and will still do what I can to help have the gospel shared with them.
Jesus saved me, a man who was in a gang, who used and sold drugs, and who was into witchcraft. I know that Jesus can change the heart of any man regardless of their background.

It is so sad that you are unable to accept that the Jesus of the Bible is a real person. History proves he was on earth c. 2,000 years ago. He’s coming back soon too.
If you are able to consider for just a half hour that you may be wrong, have a look at the website Cold Case Christianity. Using the same strategies the police use to solve crimes decades old, you will find that Jesus definitely existed.
But you will need to open your mind just a little to be able to accept you are wrong. Your choice.

Isaac Marshall says
Amen Phil and Red Pill. Your summary of what Christians think of Muslims and Islam here is very accurate. Me and every Christian i’ve met believes exactly the same.
R Russell says
I am an evangelical among other descriptions, I hate no one. I hate what a lot of people do. I hate that I need to put restrictions on people because they are violent and unsafe. That means prison in many cases.
As long as Muslims are determined to live by the dictates of their Holy Books, putting non-Muslims at risk, then they will need to accept it is not loving to allow them to live like that. If that means prison or even capital punishment, then they will need to accept that their values are not acceptable and will not be tolerated.

Do Evangelical Christians Hate Muslims? A Rebuttal of Pastor Bob Roberts Jr.

Hate the sin ,not hate the sinner,Islam is a great sin against all humanity ,like Nazism it should not be accepted as just another political belief system or religion.Anyone who says we must be tolerate of all belief systems, is weak minded or working for the enemy of God.Any pastor, priest ,Rabbi,or Pope who defends Islam ,defends the ending of Christianity in favor of Islam,Islam will not tolerate Christianity the end game of Islam is to crush Christianity, the Jews, the Atheist, and all Non-Believers.We all non-Muslims (and Muslims who are Islamic in name only) have skin in this game.

Do Christians hate muslims? Why bother. That is an attempt to individualize muslims and we all know individualism is not allowed in islam. It is islamic ideology and all the horrible things that ideology brings. For any thinking Christian islamic ideology is very much something to despise.

Here’s more claptrap from Pastor Bob Roberts Jr. from a couple of years ago:
“A Muslim Declaration on Religious Minorities: An Interview w/ Pastor Bob Roberts in Marrakesh, Morocco”
https://www.christianitytoday.com/edstetzer/2016/january/marrakesh-morocco-interview-w-pastor.html
First, it cites the “Charter of Medina”, which almost certainly did not exist. Then, it does not mention what *actually* happened in Medina after Muhammed and his thug companions took over–the enslavement and slaughter of Christians, Jews, and pagans there.
Then, it talks about Muslims “protecting” Christians–without mentioning that this concept only applies to Christians who have completely submitted to Islam.
Does Bob Roberts understand any of this? Would he care if he did know? Likely not on both counts.
tgusa says
Christianity’s message is hate the sin love the sinner as none of us are perfect. We are al sinners to different degrees.

That’s okay. Jesus still loves us. Glad someone does. Muslims don’t, but who cares?

ronyvo says
Rev. Robert’s intention is honorable and Christian. However, he based his opinion on one or few relationships. I don’t know about his knowledge of the Koran. He does not differentiate between hate and dislike. I can dislike a person but do not, necessarily hate him/her.
I am talking from personal experience. I lived in Egypt for the first 26 years of my life. I was forced to study the evil Koran by Imam from Al-Azhar. This was the most horrible time in my life. Before one cites the Koran, one must start by saying ‘la elah ell allah and Mohammad rasoul allh’, which means no god but allah, and Mohammad is his messenger. I said the fits part, but refused to say the second. The teacher kicked me out of the class, i went to the principle, who was to my utter luck Christian.
My point, Islam is pure Satanic, we Christians are to hate Satan. I feel sorry for the Muslims, they are brainwashed from the day they started to talk to hate the Jews and Christians. NOW, they are scattered all over the world. They are using takkya (deception) to let the naive and ignorant Westerners believe that Islam is a peaceful ‘religion’, and play the VICTIM role.
David says
Muslims are trying to outbreed us: The Penis mightier than the Sword!
curious says
Muslims celebrate the Koran. Chapter 98, verse 6, calls Christians (including children) the most vile of created beings. I would expect 100% of Christian parents to disapprove of that, so I am surprised by the statistic claiming that only 57% of Evangelicals disapprove of Islam. Maybe the other 43% haven’t read it, or were fooled by taqiya.
Kepha says
I can see both Roberts’ point and Robert Spencer’s point–and I write as an Evangelical Christian.
Gospel-oriented (which is what “Evangelical” means) Christianity sees believers not as finished saints or “the best of men” (as the Qur’an says of Muslims), but as forgiven sinners. Salvation is not won by our effort, but by what Jesus the Messiah did for us in his Incarnation, sinless life, working righteousness, atoning death on the cross, resurrection from the dead on the third day, and body-and-soul ascension into Heaven. Sure, we are called to love our neighbors and God, but these works are to express gratitude for what was done for us rather than to win salvation.
Hence, in our view, the church is a hospital for sinners rather than a museum to show off finished saints. I had a good friend in a church I formerly attended who was a veteran of Gulf War I. He came home with a strong prejudice against Muslims as people. But I will let God the Holy Spirit work on him. A lot of heartland Evangelicals of all races are strongly patriotic Americans, and as such, felt a very great anger over 9-11.And, along with many others, such feelings run strong. I believe that Mr. Roberts is rightly concerned that such strong feelings might lead people to ignore Christ’s Great Commission and to let themselves fall into a wrong-headed hatred–especially at a time when we’ve been caught flat-footed by an unprecedented openness on the part of Muslims towards the Gospel (and I mean as found in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, rather than in the imagined reconstruction of the Islamic theologians). My sense is that Mr. Roberts’ is expressing a proper evangelistic and pastoral concern that Christian people do not let remaining sin get the better of them and thus “spoil God’s fruit” for the time being. They are a concern that I share.
I also agree with Mr. Roberts concerns about how many Evangelicals view the Last Days. Since the late 19th century, Dispensational Premillennialism has gotten many all hyped up about the re-emergence of a Jewish polity in ‘Eretz Yisroel, which comes with a certainty that the millennium is just around the corner and will be heralded by an apocalyptic battle between ethnic Israel and its neighbors and a vast, anti-God conspiracy among the nations. As someone who believes in traditional Covenantal theology, Uncle Kepha believes that the “Chosen People” and chief concern of God is not necessarily a plot of land in the Middle East, but all those, Jewish or Gentile, who are gathered about the Messiah Jesus. Hence, I think that hose who seem to root for war between modern Israel and its neighbors are extremely ill-advised and wrong-headed; even sinful. As I have said many times before, the real victory for which we shout the loudest Hallelujah is when someone leaves Islam for the Jesus Christ we find in the Old and New Testaments; and that isn’t won by shouting “raghead” at people.
But, Robert Spencer is also correct about what attitudes and behaviors the Christian faith enjoins, and, thank God, I have run into lots of Evangelicals whom he fairly describes–especially among those who are aware of what the worldwide mission and fellowship of Christians is. These people are not blind to the evils perpetuated by Islamic militancy, nor would they disarm the Western world (or non-Islamic Africa, for that matter).
One last plea: Mr. Roberts is one Christian preacher among many. While I certainly share some of his concerns, I do not look on him as some sort of newest “Evangelical Pope” (and we have seen a hostile MSM anoint several such ones for us over the years, and resent that far more than Ali’s kebab shop in the strip mall)–and I freely admit certain fissures among us, some of which I’ve revealed in this response, which certainly preclude any one man being a “Pope” for us.
