Content Creators
How do you do content marketing (early stage)?
  • Instead of publishing one article every day, build a mega-comprehensive article, and publish once a week or fortnight. Then, start promoting that. You would perhaps see better reception to that.
  • Start guest blogging - not plain old guest posts but targeting websites that are already pretty solid in authority and proposing articles where your website can be mentioned. This is a website I would recommend: Business2Community.com. You can propose to write an article on the topic like "5 Tools To Increase Website Conversions" - write a super detailed article that includes your website as well. If possible, build links to this article from other guest posts you write. Now it's easier to rank these pages on search than it is to rank your own website. So within a month or two, you will start seeing targeted traffic come to your website.
  • Start with content about selling the problem you're solving as well as possible solutions. Stuff like, "5 reasons why [target market] struggles with [problem your solving] and how to fix it"
  • After writing, start promoting it wherever your market looks for information. It includes posting on LinkedIn, Growthhackers, Zest.is and Hackernews.
Don't publish on Medium

Three reasons why publishing on Medium is a bad idea.

  • You are building Medium's brand, not your own. When someone tells another person about an article they read on Medium, they almost never say "Did you see this awesome article by [author]." They almost always say "Did you see this awesome article on Medium."
  • You have little ownership over the audience. You can't take your audience elsewhere, you have no other way to communicate with them besides publishing again
  • If you want to monetize your audience, Medium is terrible. I still haven't seen repeated evidence of writers making meaningful amount of money. Plus, adjacent opportunities like workshops, courses, etc aren't possible because of #1 and #2.

Why Substack will take over Medium

Substack is draining the brain of Medium. They are clearly attracting the smartest and best writers. Why?

  • You own your audience on Substack.
  • The author/publication name is at the top of the hierarchy of presence, not Substack, and as a result, you are building your own brand, not someone else's.
  • The monetization opportunity is far better. I don't know the exact numbers, but my best guess is there are way more writers already making 5 and 6 figures on Substack vs Medium. Plus, since you own the contact info of your audience you may be able to monetize them in other ways.
  • They do all of the above, while also removing tons of friction to the creation.
