Kitty Valentine #3

Kitty Valentine Dates a Rock Star

Rate this book
SPIN THE WHEEL. DATE THE GUY. WRITE THE BOOK.

Six years ago, Kitty Valentine took the book world by storm when her sweet debut romance hit number one on the New York Times Best Sellers list, which was followed by a string of successful releases.
Her latest novel, however, totally bombs, causing her editor to suggest she write much sexier books.
To Kitty, writing smut is the literary equivalent of stripping. But with no advance coming in and her royalties dipping to an all-time low, Kitty has no choice.
Armed with a hot-guy spinning prize wheel, made by her best friend, listing all the different types of men she will date and then write about, Kitty will be spinning-not stripping-her way back onto the best-sellers list.

Kitty Valentine continues on her journey with a rock star. This rock star is none other than her middle school crush, boy-bander Dustin Grant trying to make a comeback. I loved Dustin at first, but as time passed, not as much. It's funny though, even though I didn't love the hero like I did in some of the previous books, this was one of my favorites. I think the more I read about Kitty, the more I love her.

The wheel spins and it lands on... rock star. Kitty catches the eye of 'Crazy 4 U' member, Dustin Grant. Kitty and Dustin go on a few dates, but things get a little rocky. Musicians are moody and Dustin is that for sure. Kitty handles it well though. I'm excited she is going to date a fire fighter in the next book. I think someone down to earth is just what Kitty needs.

After reading the first three books in this series, I've got to say, with each book I read I start pulling for her neighbor Matt a little more. I think he would be such a great match for Kitty. Kitty is strong, independent, and everything I love in a heroine. Even though she hasn't found love quite yet, I have hopes she will sooner rather than later!

If you're looking for a highly entertaining series that's loads of fun and will having you crave the next book, give Kitty Valentine a try!

Well this was a very different story compared to the others in the series!

Kitty gets to meet her teenage crush, Dustin Grant, who was the lead singer in the boy band she had plastered all over bedroom walls growing up. You know what it’s like, you imagine the life you could have together and scribble your names, entwined by love hearts. Practice what your signature will look like once you get married…

A few years have passed since then and when Kitty does come face to face with Dustin, after watching him perform in a bar, he is just as gorgeous as she remembered. His voice is just as smooth and they get on really well. In fact, he invites her to join him for a drink and bite to eat. Things are going well, they share a kiss she will never forget and then things don’t go so well. Dustin is used to girls giving him what he wants but he has met his match with Kitty Valentine because she is not just any girl.

‘His voice has lost the smoothness it used to have, before ten years passed and heaven knows what else. It’s got a lot of rasp to it now, like he’s either a smother or a drinker or both. But that just adds to its charm, that roughness. He used to be a little boy, but now, he’s a man who's seen things, who’ experienced things.’

Kitty is disappointed to find out that her expectations of him fell short. I call that ‘anticappointment’ - when you’re anticipating something great but are left just feeling disappointed. However, all is not lost, he has her number and may call her right? Well it seems that Dustin was indeed intrigued by Kitty and they do see each other again. The tables get turned a bit and that made things very interesting.

‘I can almost fool myself into thinking he’s the kid he used to be - and heck, for all I know, he might be. Maybe he never matured past that point.’

I liked Dustin at the beginning of this story but towards the end not so much. I still love Blake and Jake and sexy neighbor Matt more so she definitely has options but let’s see what Mr Fireman brings to the table next…

Anyways, I’m still amazed with Kitty’s character and the way she carries herself. I adore her and the progress she’s made and just who she is! Bye bye stupid rock star, hello other hot dudes.

I give it 4 stars. This book was a bit different than the others in the series.

What would you give to meet your celebrity crush? All girls would love for the opportunity to meet the hot guy from a boy band they loved as a teenager. That's what Kitty thought too until she finally meets Dustin. I can say I didn't care much for Dustin when Kitty first meets him and my dislike grows for him especially when Pheobe growls at him. If a dog doesn't like you, there's something wrong with you.

The guy's Kitty picks get douchier as they go. I hope the next guy is a good one, if not she needs to just hook up with her neighbor Matt and call it a day.

This book only cements my hopes that Kitty ends up with her next-door neighbour, Matt. The wheel for our resident author, Kitty lands on rock star and when one of her childhood idols launches a comeback tour, Kitty finds her next date pretty quickly. However, Dustin was a complete ass throughout this book. Entitled and arrogant, it is easy to see how people get disenchanted with people they have always looked up to. While Kitty gets loads of fodder for her next best seller my heart is still with Matt.

I can't wait to see where Kitty ends up next.

Definitely my least favorite guy, and honestly I would have loved more Matt. I love seeing Kitty with each new guy and seeing how she learns about what she does and doesn’t want in her life as she continues to push away from her comfort zones. I think the whole point of this guy was for Kitty to learn what she did not want and I really liked that about it, but I would’ve loved to punch him in the face :)

I’m absolutely devouring this series though, it’s so good !

This series is like chapter books that should all be combined into one. Each chapter is a new "type" of man that Kitty dates to get ideas for her romance novels. The funny thing is these stories are not romantic. No HEA, no wonderful hero and a heroine who is oftentimes gullible and willing to overlook any flaw. The first two were a hoot, but now Dodd is running out of steam a little bit. In Rock Star the premise is fun - what if you met your teen-aged heart throb 10+ years later? Would he hold up or just be a fun walk down memory lane? Not much of a spoiler that this rock star turns out to be a real jerk . Kudos to Dodd for paving the way with lots of hints so when the hammer falls, the reader can say, I knew it! The original premise is wearing thin though - Kitty has to find a man who fills the bill - billionaire, rock star, fireman, and so on and then date him to to be able to write about it in a romance book. Oh, well - the stories are very short.

Rock stars...what was Kitty thinking? I really loved how REAL Kitty’s experience is with her boy band idol Dustin and his comeback tour. This round of dating is much more gritty and a little less sweet than her two previous attempts. I thoroughly enjoy Kitty’s adventures and fall in love with her neighbor Matt a little more each book. This story was a roller coaster for both me and Kitty and thank you for steadfast support from best friends and grandmothers. This series offers both readers and Kitty lessons on relationships and growing up. Keep your trust circle small and true but don’t let people make you insecure or jaded. I’m excited to find out who Kitty will date next!

This is an ARC review. All opinions are solely my own.

Kitty Valentine Dates a Rock Star is book 3 of Jillian Dodd's Kitty Valentine Series. This is a cute, quick read. I recommend reading the previous books of the series first.

Kitty is a writer who likes writing sweet romances but they're not selling. In an attempt to up the heat factor of her books she takes to dating certain men as research for her books. This book has her dating a rock star.

I enjoyed this book but couldn't give it more than 3 stars because I felt like it was too difficult to believe that this somewhat timid writer would have done the things written about. Also, I feel like I know where the rest of the books will be headed. These books, while enjoyable, are very predictable.

Who needs the mega wheel really when you can just make things happen? Kitty Valentine, meet your childhood crush Dustin Grant. That’s right, you’re going out with former rockstar Dustin, who’s trying to make his way back in the biz, while you try to continue on the streak of writing steamier romance novels. But how can a Rock Star possibly fall in love with some girl who writes books and always gets interrupted during “dates”? Well maybe they can’t make it work. Maybe this is just another distraction for Kitty. Maybe Dustin is the worst distraction of all. I’ve never loved to hate a character more throughout a book.

Wasn't all that interesting. Dustin just didn't connect at all. Well, he did in the cab the first night but she turned him down and it seems real likely he'll never call her...but he does but it never seems like he's interested. Never meet your idol.

There isn't a lot more to the premise. I read this in a few hours and wasted a rainy afternoon, I think.

It hurts when Kitty ends up dating ass holes.

I am used to book ending in HEA and when it doesn't its kinda hard to swallow . Doctor and Billionaire weren't ass holes , it just didn't work out with them . But Dustin feels like genuinely a great guy. The way he talk about wanting to recognize by his music and how bummed he is when his gig didn't went as well as he hope. You don't expect that from a bad person. But he just is and its kinda funny because you would expect someone as ruthless and as manipulative like Dustin to get what he wants so him not continue being famous kinda throws me off.

This one was fun even if the rock star ended up being a pretty despicable character. But it brought out a new Kitty that I loved seeing. Kitty with a backbone was really fun to read. And I really loved that she was nicer to Matt this time around. And Kitty's grandmother may just be my favorite out of all the characters in these books. She is a breath of fresh air with her no nonsense attitude. I can't wait to see what adventure Jillian takes us on next!

"I want you to keep that bright, loving heart of yours. I want you to see good in people. I want you to keep writing romantic stories about love triumphing over everything else. I want you to write it because you believe it, not because someone else tells you that you have to write it."

Leave it to Hayley to remember the handy-dandy trope-picker. I imagine it's like wheel of fortune. Replace 🤑🤑with 🥰🤵🏽👨🏻‍⚕️👨🏻‍🎤 👨🏿‍🚒🔥 and you'll get it. Hayley wants to add 🎅🏼. I die🤣!

So Kitty Valentine dates a rock 🤘🏼star. And where on earth is she supposed to find one of those🤷🏼‍♀️? I treasure the series meet-cutes. I'm so intrigued! Captivated! Like HOW 🤔 is this going to play out? Hayley coming to save the day! She scores tickets to see, Dustin. Grant. THE 🥰 Dustin Grant. Dustin Grant, who, for most of their adolescence, was the man Hayley and Kitty wanted to marry. Serious puppy love! Anyone else picture Dustin Grant as Harry🙋🏼‍♀️? Sigh.

Well, Dustin Grant is trying to revive his career. Their meet-cute: at his small concert, a heckler gives him grief about playing a song from his boy band days and Kitty (loudly) sticks up for him. Only slightly 🤭🤦🏼‍♀️embarrassing. Dustin has magic and charisma oozes from him. Underneath the fame, he's just a person. The fact the he uses the word neat is the most endearing thing about him. ...BUT, I'm going to agree with Matt... I don't trust him🙅🏼‍♀️. Is he really humble and gentle? Must read to find out ;)

Kitty + Hayley= ride-or-die 👯‍♀️BFFs. They're super likable and hilarious. The convo with Kitty and her grandma about keeping her bright, loving heart hit me like a punch in the gut. "I wish I could find somebody to be madly in love with." I want that for you too, Kitty! And I know who. His name is Matt. Matt Ryder. Just the guy who lives across the hall. He's insufferable. Impossibly handsome. And probably in the friend zone? He's a man of hidden depths. Matt + Kitty = the OTP. Maybe? 🤪🤷🏼‍♀️😛 Here’s to hoping for Kitty walking off toward the sunset into her HEA. If you like chick-lit and romcom, you’ll be smitten with the Kitty Valentine books! 🤗 "To the next hottie." KV4!!!👨🏻‍🚒

"Kitty Valentine Dates a Rockstar" by Jillian Dodd was just as cute and laugh-out-loud funny as the previous installments of this series have been, and I loved it. Kitty is a wonderful lead character: sweet, endearingly quirky, and a little clumsy at times, but so much braver than she thinks she is. She puts herself out there time and time again even though it's not easy for her to do, and she knows she might get hurt because casual relationships really aren't her thing. She seemed to do a bit better in terms of forming an emotional attachment to the subject of her dating research this time around, but unfortunately, she still managed to get hurt for different reasons.

Kitty's best friend, the snarky yet supportive Hayley, was just as much fun as usual, and I love that she's as much a sister to Kitty as a friend. I enjoyed seeing Hayley get a little flustered while meeting Kitty's romantic interest, former boy band member Dustin Grant. Hayley is normally so cool and collected, especially when compared to Kitty, but meeting Dustin turned her into a gushing, giggling fan girl, which made me laugh. It's nice to know that Hayley isn't quite as perfect as she sometimes seems! I find her to be a bit more human and relatable now, and I like her character even more than I did before.

Kitty's neighbor and frenemy Matt was also back in this installment, and I have to comment again on how much I love his and Kitty's banter. I really hope that the two of them end up together in the end. Watching them dance around each other through all of these books while Kitty dates other men for "research" is kind of like the ultimate slow burn relationship building, and I am here for it!

Overall, "Kitty Valentine Dates a Rockstar" was a tremendous amount of fun and I am very much looking forward to Kitty's next adventure. I highly recommend this series for all fans of chick lit and romantic comedy.

Kitty Valentine is a romance novelist with several best sellers - until she's not. Her publicist tells her that she needs more spice in her books to satisfy an ever changing readership. Therefore Kitty, with the prompting of her best friend, sets out in each book of the series to "date" a romantic hero and use this as inspiration for her novels. In this installment, Kitty gets the opportunity to relive her teenaged dreams and date her teen crush-a rock star! Who didn't have that dream as a teen?! Once she gets over her star stuck attitude, she finds that she can really relate to this pop star, Dustin, who is trying to re-invent himself, much like she is. They seem to have some real understanding of each other, but when her rockstar tries to take things further, Kitty pulls herself out of her fantasy and plays the nice girl. Thinking this will be the end, she is surprised when he calls her back. I'd love to say her dreams live up to reality, but with all things they don't. Kitty senses she's being used and doesn't put up with his bull. She takes her teen dream, rips the tee and burns it. I love how she is confident enough with what she wants that she can put aside her awestruckness and kick him to the curb! I can't wait to see who she dates next! BTW, bestie, neighbor and grandma all my faves, make appearances with their own insight. When will she date Matt already?! NEED!!!

If you have not read the below, I would recommend reading those books(s) first as they are part of this journey:
Kitty Valentine Dates a Billionaire
Kitty Valentine Dates a Doctor (Kitty Valentine #2)

This is a part of Kitty’s story. Kitty became a successful writer six years ago. But after her latest release totally flops her editor tells her she needs to write a little bit of a sexier book. But Kitty is not used to writing like that and needs something to help her. Her best friend makes her a prize wheel that she needs to spin so she can date different types of men for inspiration. If she dates and then writes about things, she just might be able to get back to her best seller status. This book goes through her dating a rocker. This guy was a total and complete jerk which has you wanted her with her friend even more.

This series is about her writing but also about her really discovering herself and coming out of her little shell she has been hiding in. She has tons of support and the banter between the characters is fun and upbeat. Not sure how many total books are in the series but so far there are 4 listed so you have to assume that she is going to continue on this journey for a while and pick a guy at the very end. Just wonder if it will be one of the dates or a friend, she has had all along.

Kitty Valentine does it again! Honestly I think these have become some of my favorite rom com books ever. I can’t say it enough; they’re pure rom com through and through. No hidden traumas or secrets, just Kitty dating her way through the ridiculous wheel with Matt to get on her nerves and Hayley to guide her through it. This particular book ended up being better than I expected it to be. She met the billionaire in an organic way and he owns her company, but how the heck was she going to meet a rockstar? I knew from the beginning that I wouldn’t love Dustin like I did Blake or even Jake. He proved my first impression right every step of the way. What I really liked about this book was how realistic it is. For the most part, heartbreak or ego stung or not, Kitty has had good relationships with the wheel guys and the breakups were normal or at least amicable. This book? The whole relationship from start to finish is exactly what I’d expect from a cocky has been. Overall, this book was just as cute as the last. I’ll definitely continue reading this series to the end. It’s the perfect pick me up between book hangovers. It’s adorable and sweet. I love the characters and all of their antics. And once again I hope that Kitty and all of her wholesomeness gets her HEA at the end of this.

Once again, the hot-guy spinning prize wheel was spun and this time it landed on Rock Star! This means that Kitty Valentine has to find herself a rock star to date so she can write about her dating adventures in her next novel. I was wondering if she was going to magically have the number of a rock star in her address book but no, how she managed to meet the man she was going to date was perfect I thought, and I also loved that there was some history.

The way that the story went in this book was how I imagined dating a rock star like Dustin could be. It wasn’t necessarily what I wanted for Kitty, but everything happens for a reason…. right? I adore Kitty and I would love for her to find the man of her dreams for real, and I had high hopes that the man she met that first night could have ticked that box, but I loved that my feelings changed as the story progressed.

I enjoyed this story; it was entertaining from start to finish. I did however miss the 'laugh out loud' humour that the previous book had. I award Kitty Valentine Dates a Rock Star 3.5-4 stars. I’m looking forward to seeing where the wheel lands next, although I’m still #TeamMatt and I’m hoping her dating journey ends right across the hall!

Trope 2: The Rock Star

Kitty Valentine, best-selling romance author, needs new inspiration for her books. With the help of her best friend Hayley's "handy-dandy trope-picker" Kitty begins "dating roulette," basically selecting a specific "type" of man to date and write about every few months e.g. "firefighter, single daddy, cowboy, rock star, doctor, motorcycle club, actor, prince/royalty, lifeguard, race car driver, foreign lover, tattoo artist, police, boy next door..." (Book 1, p. 38).

When "Rock Star" is selected as the third trope, Hayley sets Kitty up to meet her teenage celebrity crush, former boy-band member Dustin Grant. Kitty is beside herself with excitement; she used to have "Crazy 4 You" sheets! And pillows with Dustin's face on them!!

Dustin had me thinking of my own teenage celebrity crush *cough* Taylor Hanson 😍

Spoiler Alert: This book doesn't end the way I expected... and I loved that! I am looking forward to Kitty Valentine Dates a Fireman
December 30, 2020
I am loving this series so far. This one was a little different and man would I be so disappointed if Donnie turned out to be anything like Dustin Grant.

Kitty is all set to date a Rockstar in this installment and with a little help from Hayley's connections she gets tickets to see that guy from that boy band. The one all the girls were crazy over. She ends up meeting him and scoring a date but has to turn down his very forwardness. Red light number one.

And I'm totally with Kitty as she is so super nice to him and really sees what he's going through to get his career back on track. The red flashing light for me was when someone's dog did not like him. If my dog doesn't like you then that is the end. But Dustin keeps wooing her back after his behaviors and our girl has definitely learned about herself through these dates because she does not stand for it and lets him have it and he totally deserved it.

I love that our girl is learning so much about herself and getting some life experiences and not just holed up in her apt writing others experiences. Can't wait to see what is next.

I couldn't put this book down! I love Kitty so much. She feels so real to me. I've never related so much with a character. Throughout the series, she has grown so much and stayed true to herself with each guy she dates. This book was a little different from the past two. Our guy was a little bit rougher and wasn't redeemable at all. But hey that's real life. I love how realistic Kitty's love life is because in reality our idols aren't always going to be as dreamy as we think. These books are less about an HEA and more about watching Kitty grow and being able to relate to her dating experiences. It's becoming such a unique series! This book is great for a quick read and it will have you begging for more! I am very excited for when Kitty does find Mr. Right but I also am very happy to keep reading her adventures in dating and writing.
