--- THE TIME I HAVE LOST When they notice the missing piece, they read books, seek new ways, while I remain trapped by a voice that only screams half-finished sentences. Before everything burned down, I should have told you a million more things. Before everything burned down. You know I've spent a lifetime dreaming, collecting those papers, lighters, and poems. You know I've spent a lifetime dreaming, but when the dream comes true... when the dream comes true. The piece I miss is the time I have lost, and these objects no longer work. And every dream I had is now a stone, a piece of wall, an earthquake. I remember where I need to go only when I see the sea in front of me. It doesn't matter if we stay up late tonight. It doesn't matter if you don't even remember my name. The dream fades away every time the dream comes true. And tonight is the last night; the last night like this.

Occidente 04:38
--- WEST I am one of the stones that I threw to the bottom of the sea the day I felt bad and took a train to the ocean. It was about to rain. I walked as far as I could. It's a small tourist destination. I've been here before but I don't remember. Like a recurring and familiar dream, that only exists when it’s dark and dies when the sun rises. Every Sunday felt like Christmas, but I wasn’t brave enough to stay. I wrote your name on the railing, and every now and then I send someone to see if it's still there. It’s still there. Sometimes I wish I could leave my body, to see myself collapsing from above, to already be in 2030 to think back to you from a different perspective, faded by the years. To already be in 2030 and think back to the 2020s with the nostalgia of someone who didn't throw them into the water. I wish I could walk on the bottom of the sea, to see the reflection of the sun from below, to take back the stones that were mine, hold them tight for a moment longer before letting them go. Rise to the surface over and over again, and may every breath be the one I've always dreamt of. Flowers on the road, heading towards Las Cumbres. Today it's sunny but windy, it’s like my sorrow is flying away, floating on the surface of the shipwreck of solitude. Like a Chekhovian play. Pnin's bowl, Carrère's cuff links. I seek purpose in the absurd, that’s faith and nothing else, that’s faith and nothing more, it has been said. The beating of the wing is futile. Deep furrow, slow walking. As Cohen said, there's a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in. It's more beautiful even if sung with sorrow. To see the future as a piece of bread. As Cohen said, there's a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in And for a brief moment I thought it was taking aim. But every thorn is an excuse and every branch is afraid, and I gave up waiting. I should have never learned how to swim. Breathing regularly. I may have won with chlorine and linoleum, but I couldn't do anything against the sea. And the bell rings, but not on that day; it never rings when it should.

Icona 03:41
--- ICON When I was young, I almost always knew how to fill the pages with the right words; I would erase them and throw them in the bin so that no one else would see them. My mother would often find them crumpled up; I don't know if she read them or if she was too distracted. Then, she started asking me more specific questions; that's when I tasted a sheet of paper for the first time. When I was young, I was like Carlton Myers, I could score from any position. I would always lock myself in my room: years of hard training and precision. This is the room you entered that January, and, since then, I've been trying to trace your features in my memory, as if they were furrows to be dug anew every night. Your initials were like a sacred text: without pictures, written late at night. I was fifteen and wore light blue jeans, I hardly asked myself any questions. If when I look at your photos from many years ago I always find the same gaze, why can't I do the same with myself in any of my photos from this year? I haven't erased a single word since then. I kept them aside for your return, or for my own. When I played in your new hometown, I looked for your eyes in other people's faces, I did not find you, and maybe that's for the best.

Charneca 02:33
--- CHARNECA That breeze I haven't found again froze the looks and the train seats. It was just the first of many encounters. I fell asleep under a sky set ablaze by the sun. And I could have slept forever, but one morning in late March, the workers in the next-door apartment accidentally broke through the wall. I wasn't alone for the first time, and I waited for you to leave to gather plaster and bricks and donate them to my collection. My acquaintances don’t know me that well after all, they have plenty of advice on how to dress and how to lie. My acquaintances don't know me at all, and my then-favorite songs don’t recognize me anymore. I threw those pieces of wall into the sea, when I should have swallowed them. That afternoon in Charneca would have been a perfect ending, if it weren't for everything else.

Forse siamo andati troppo in là. --- OTHER PEOPLE’S LIVES As long as I dream second-hand dreams, I’ll have to steal the nights from rental friends. I've memorized my part. I close my eyes and open them again: I have a job, a home, a dog, and a cross in the backyard. All the weight of other people's lives has fallen upon me; of tragedies I cannot understand, nothing to do with all those songs and poems. And the memory of those gestures won't go away: it will overshadow the best days I've spent with you. And I swear now I would truly prefer to talk about your niece who has started taking piano lessons; to have a coffee hoping there are no rainstorms inside; and to realize, finally surprised, how much the days have lengthened in the past month… But if only I let go, and let my hands to do as they wish, these hedges would turn yellow and, in an instant, burst into flames, and with them, this stupid farce of ours. Regrets burn slowly, but disappointments burst quickly, and the fire spreads. And even your furniture, your laptop, the photos of your relatives, and my clothes... Perhaps we have gone too far. As long as I dream second-hand dreams, I’ll have to spend the nights counting the debris. And I still search for something worth saving. I kneel down when no one is looking, and that's also why… The memory of those gestures won't go away: it will overshadow the best days I've spent with you. And now that we are strangers again it comes back to me from time to time, like a weight that leaves me breathless, and I can't make it go away I never learned how to close the past underneath new autumns, and if only I could go back...

--- WHEN THE DREAM COMES TRUE I saw it happen in black and white, the static image on the screen: going back in time to mend it all. And I turned it off a moment before guessing the mistake: a suburban home with a backyard. And when I go back to 2005 I quickly forget after the goodbyes; three years later, I'll say it was just pre-adolescence. And when I stop in 2007 I have no regrets and let her go: I understand that Glasgow has changed her and that's how it should be. Yet the doubt lingers, to see you vanish all of a sudden, to feel the colder side of the bed grow even colder. And I know, I know it's late, but I keep my eyes open to make sure you're still there. My only mistake was not realizing it soon enough. Failing to set myself apart as I looked for you everywhere. I never truly lived the lives I’ve dreamt of for too long. When I go back to my twenties I leave nothing untouched: I have a lighter in my hand and I've learned how to wield it. And when I go back to the end of March I wake up alone at home, I gather those pieces of wall and throw them away. But it's the past that changes the future, and it is strange to feel so light, it is strange to be alone again. And now I move from town to town as if I were invisible, and I see everything again, as if nothing has changed. There's still a place I would like to go back to; I was there for a few minutes, but I didn't step out of the van for fear of smelling the scent of all those blossoming trees, the same scent you would feel when we didn't know each other yet, every spring.
