It pains me to write this as I know the author on a personal level and she’s amazing. However, I refuse to blow smoke up anyones arse and I feel I would not be true to myself and my feelings in doing that. So I am writing as a reviewer and not as a friend.

This book for me didn't really get going or grip me until it almost reached part 2 around 37%. Although some of the first part was somewhat needed as insight into the past. I feel that it was to long and could have been wrapped up in a few chapters and it would have given the same effects.

The book is a story that definitely deserved to be told but I don't see how you can write something in first person and not have their inner thoughts and feelings. For me if they've experienced something that huge they'd think about it and want to talk about it. Especially within themselves. I mean I've had my best conversations at times with myself over my thoughts and feelings.

The story was a good story but with so much of the timeline missing and not much inner dialogue. I struggled to connect with the character, I couldn't connect with the life and stuggles that Charlie was given. I know that's seems vague but I can't divulge the twist or the end. It was so left field for me. That it was almost unbelievable.

Now I won't say dont read this book. Please do so. It may well be your book of the year and you love every word. That's what I love about a book. Everyone sees something different in it.

Wow, for a Debut author this book was amazing. The author took on a hard storyline for her first book and she delivered it with heart and I couldn't be more proud of her. Her storyline flowed beautifully. Once I started I didn't put it down until I had finished and once I had the story and emotions stayed with me for days afterwards.

For a story of new beginnings I was enraptured from beginning to end. I loved the main character Charlie. It honestly felt like you were there for the ride with them. Honestly you need to go into this book blind and enjoy it like I did, the lessons of new beginnings, of acceptance, of bravery and strength.

Well done Janice I honestly can't wait to see what you bring us next ❤

This is a story that needs to be read without any prior knowledge of the storyline, so please bear with me as a try to write this review without giving anything away.

I absolutely love how this book is written. I thought that the story flowed perfectly and I loved how the author chose to tell Charlie’s story by separating the different parts of her life. I did for quite some time wonder why Charlie felt the way that she did after she moved away from her family home, but then I know that until you have walked in someone’s shoes you should never judge. However now that I have reached the end, I fully understand.

Reading this story felt like I had stepped back in time. It is what I would call ‘a story to read on a Sunday’ kind of book. Written solely in Charlies’ POV there is no back and forth between characters, and it was a story I found myself getting lost in. I felt there was very little angst but, in this instance, I don’t believe that was necessary. The pages did reveal a story that at times had me reaching for a tissue.

This is a story about hope and new beginnings; about bravery and strength. Charlie is an incredible woman who I admire immensely. The secondary characters added to the story perfectly, each bringing something that enhanced my enjoyment whilst reading. I do believe that Charlie’s story will stay with me for a long time to come.

I don’t often reread books but this is one that I plan to go back to in the near future. You’ll understand why once you’ve read this yourself. Until I was able to look back over the full story I felt I was going to rate Unconventional Love 4 stars, but now I feel it deserves the full 5 star rating I can award it. I’m looking forward to what this debuting author publishes next.

Five star debut

I bought and read this book as I have the pleasure of knowing the author personally. I am so proud of her for making the jump from avid reader to an author in her own right. I was expecting many things knowing what a keen reader she is but I didn't expect the storyline of this book. The author has asked reviews not to have spoilers, which i am not usually guilty of, I prefer the reader to have the thrill of reading and enjoying the twists and turns. I gave this book 5 stars but only because you aren't allowed 10! I will be recommending this book to all friends. If you buy this book you will not be able to put it down. Well done J Hart maybe next time we catch up you can give me courage to finally start my own book! Xxx

Wow where do I start?! OK this is a story all about new beginnings and not letting your past dictate who you are. This is the story of Charlie Granger. We get her past and then later on in the story we get her present. The characters in this story are so well developed that they honestly seem like real people and you find yourself rooting for them and hating the ones that are not so nice. I love being taken by surprise by a book and the twist in this book genuinely shocked me as I did not see it coming at all! In fact I wanted to read the book again to see if I had missed any clues that things were heading that way! This was a genuinely good debut into contemporary romance for this author and they should be super proud because it is one cracking story. Open the book and buckle up cos this one will take you on a super ride.

This book would not let me put it down from the moment that I started reading it. I had to finish it in one sitting there was no doubt about that. It moves along at a speed that suited the book being neither too fast nor too slow. The characters are interesting and you want to know more about them and no matter what happens you want to see them overcome everything in their way. This is a book that needs to be read, no doubt about it.

Unconventional Love by J. Hart was a beautiful, poignant story about Charlie. A young woman with a horrible childhood who decides to make it on her own. She picks a town and moves there. She falls in love with the town, the people, and especially…Ben. But, she’s carrying a secret….one that can change everything.

I truly loved this story….loved Charlie….loved the beautifully haunting writing of this incredible author. I was near tears in every chapter….simply because of how the author can wring emotion out of the reader with naught but the written word….a masterpiece!!!!!

Excerpt

A clearing of a throat has me pulling my head away from Ben’s. I glance to the side and notice the waiter is standing near our table with the bill looking embarrassed about his interruption. I realise what I’ve just done and immediately I regret it. I seem to have no control anymore. The friendship line has become more than blurred, it’s obliterated. His lips on mine are becoming something I crave. I’m annoyed at myself for letting myself lose control again and I can’t blame alcohol this time. It’s all Ben, It’s all me. It’s just us.

I look back at Ben who is trying to hold back a laugh.

Embarrassed by my actions, I look down at the table. “What I meant to say was, thank you, Ben.”

He smirks. “You’re welcome. Now, let me pay and let’s get out of here. It’s getting late.”

“No, absolutely not. You’re not paying. I’m paying. It’s the least I can do, and no arguments.”

Ben puts his hands up in surrender. “Okay, when you say it in the same tone as my mother, I’m definitely not arguing with you.” We both laugh and I hand my card over to the waiter.

Reading a debut novel is always an interesting time for me. Will I like it, will it grab me, will it leave me wanting for more.
Well Unconventional Love did all those things and more. Its the story of growing both in age and personally, it’s a story of know where you belong and where you don’t, it’s a story about finding your place in the world and finding out just where you belong, and ultimately understanding that you are you own destiny and the need to follow your heart.
A difficult story to write as a debut novel, but one which the author wanted to write & I for one am so glad she did.

An amazing debut novel that you will enjoy even more if you don’t read any spoilers. To get the most out of this book you just need to immerse yourself in the story and join Charlie on her journey and what a journey it is. These are my thoughts on the book because to say to much about the story would do the book an injustice.
The twist at the end will have you dropping your kindle / book with surprise and amazement. I had become so wrapped up in the story and had my fingers crossed for Charlie and Ben, that although I knew something was going to happen, I didn’t expect that.
The first part of the story is all about Charlie’s childhood and delves into her relationships with her parents and friends. I loved the advice her mum gives her one day:-
“You see in your mind, you can go anywhere, visit places, be anyone you want. In your mind, you can do anything and be anyone. It just takes imagination,”
The second part of the story we find an adult Charlie finally being able to spread her wings and fly, to look for somewhere to call home. With a “You can do this Charlie” ringing in her ears she arrives in Rockwell, starts working at The English Rose diner and meets Ben who brings some romance into her life.
I found Uncle Ernie and Margo excellent characters who brought some fun into the story and I liked how they really supported and accepted Charlie.
It is an emotional read and whatever your views might be , she does have an interesting life .
“Charlie to every negative there is always a positive, sometimes you just have to dig deeper to find it.”
The author made me feel fully invested in Charlie’s wellbeing throughout and the story flowed well. I liked how Charlie’s character developed and she blossomed into adulthood. I hoped her story would end in the way she deserved because I admired her strength and determination throughout.
I fully recommend this book and congratulate J. Hart on her first book. I look forward to seeing what she comes up with next .

Unconventional Love by J Hart is a contemporary romance about coming of age, self discovery and running from your past but towards your future.  There is alot of emotion, secrets, reveals, suspense and drama.  I will be honest and admit that I was unsure at first about this book.  I wasn't exactly sure what to expect and I needed a good book to take me out of my real world and just emerge myself into a fictional character's journey.  The cover intrigued me, the blurb had me tempted enough to get the book....and once I read it 8 was beyond handful I did.  This book had me wrapped up in the journey and feeling all my emotions and hoping for a happy ending.  It was 9ne of those books that had me still thinking about it even days after reading the final pages and needingbto tell others to read it.  I loved it that much.

This author is new to me as this is a debut book.
From page 1, I was hooked. The story flows from past to present and it keeps you gripped throughout.
The characters are multi faceted and created beautifully. The book picks up on so many aspects of life, both light and dark, that it touches your heart and mind as you read. It’s compelling, intriguing and just wonderful to follow
Charlie’s story. I laughed, cried, gasped and cheered. I plan on reading it again and again until J Hart produces another amazing book for me to devour. Incredible debut novel and I can’t wait for more from this talented new Author. Great job!

A heartbreaking but beautiful love story!

This story filled me with such heartache for Charlie. My emotions were all over the place while reading about her tragic upbringing, the pain she endured over the years and her struggles with self healing, but by the end she filled my heart with so much love. Charlie is an amazing woman that has gone through an intense journey of finding oneself and being who she was always meant to be. I had a feeling that the story was going to turn out the way it did but that didn’t take away from the shock of the bombshell she drops towards the end.

This story is filled with pain, anger, love and heartache. It’s a beautifully written coming of age story that will make you laugh and make you cry but you won’t be disappointed with how it ends.

Charlie’s story shows us that love can be unconventional and still be very beautiful. I absolutely loved it.

For anyone who loves something different, something with a real twist you don’t see coming, I really do recommended you give this brand new author a go & read this ~ her debut novel.

Unconventional Love is quite defined as 2 half’s, Charlie in the past followed by Charlie in the present . For me personally the past seemed a bit heavy going at times, though I appreciate why the author wanted to give so much detail, however I really did get into the flow of the story when we stepped in to the present & all it’s nitty gritty.

In keeping the secret till the end, I maybe missed connecting on more levels with Charlie, but the ways I did, still allowed to understand her world, her struggles & more importantly her secret.

Like I said, a really solid debut novel by an author I will defo read again !

Wow where to start with this review?
Firstly for this being J Harts bebut book all I can say is I hope she writes more in the future!! This book was such a great story and kept me hooked and involved from start to finish.
Told in parts of now and then in the telling of Charlie's story and how she came to be where she is and how she got there it takes us on her journey of loneliness.. loss and heartache.. but to see her changing and getting her life back was fantastic.
This storyline tackles a hard hitting issue or 2 but its done so with respect and research making you really feel for the characters... I honestly don't want to say much as I would hate to give spoilers as everyone needs to go in not knowing the truths behind this great book.. but I can say it has a rollercoaster for the characters and the readers to go on with emotions.. love.. hate and life changing situations.
Once I got into this book I didn't want to put it down and managed to devour it in 2 sittings with a shift at work in between lol
So all I have left to say is J Hart you smashed it lady and I will 100% recommend this story to everyone and anyone!

I went into Unconventional Love totally blind, I saw the cover and wanted to read it. I am glad I did because I had no idea the emotional roller coaster it would take me on. It is a different read. A good read but completely different. At first I had a hard time connecting with Charlie but the more she tells the more interesting I found her. I enjoyed the dynamic of Charlie and Ben's friendship as it grew to something more. Secrets and layers have to be told in order for a relationship to bloom. I enjoyed it. It might not be for everyone but it is a beautiful piece of literature.

Firstly I absolutely love this cover. As a blogger I crave different kinda reads and this author handed it to be with Unconventional Love.

Although I thought this was slow to start for me I found myself glued to Charlie’s story. Some likeable characters added to the story so well.

Well done to the author on her debut novel. Can’t wait to read more from her.

J.Hart writes in such a way that will have you on the edge of your seat, you wouldn’t think this is a debut novel and I really hope she writes more.

The story flowed effortlessly, with J Hart taking on a difficult subject for her debut.

Take an open mind and don’t look for spoilers before you read and the author will take you on a journey of self discovery.

Great debut novel

Charlie has a sad and peculiar childhood. On the brink of adulthood, she is able to break free from her dad but can’t seem to break free of the trauma in her mind. After moving to Arkansas, diner owner, Ernie, helps her to heal. His nephew, Ben, helps her to love. Charlie’s self sabotage gets in the way.
Opinion
This was so not the book I was expecting! Reading about Charlie’s childhood broke my heart. Ben’s reaction did too. The ending, however, more than made up for it. This is such a great story. If you are not open minded though, you will not like it. This book may make you question the true meaning of love.
Many thanks to Bare Naked Words for providing me with an ARC of this book.
