Blockade Rider - Lacie Burning, 2019

Open Space is open! As we move deeper into the fall, and towards the final form of the current exhibition, LAND BACK, we are working through what it means to be open not just in person, but also virtually. While the physical gallery space is open Wednesday-Saturday, 12-4pm, we realize that visiting in person is not feasible for all, and we are working to bring you more forms of digital engagement with this exciting work.

LAND BACK continues in the gallery this month, unfolding gradually as each artist adds their work to the exhibition. Organized both to accommodate the safety of the artists during the pandemic, and in recognition of the way bodies move to and from frontlines as needed in resistance actions, the show is being installed in phases. With that in mind, even if you've already been to see the show, we invite you to come back soon! There is more to see.

The installation schedule for LAND BACK is as follows:
Oct 9 - Nicole Neidhardt
Oct 21 - Lacie Burning
Nov 4 - Chandra Melting Tallow
Nov 18 - Whess Harman

Find photos of the current form of the exhibition here on the Open Space website, as well as more information about the works within it, and stay tuned for more documentation!

LAND BACK will carry on through the new year to January 16, 2021.

Interview with Nicole Neidhardt

Artist Nicole Neidhardt was recently featured in an artist talk/interview with Jordan Koe of CFUV's LAND BACK radio! Listen to the interview, and Nicole's music picks, here.

Land Back Radio is a Indigenous Punk, Metal, and Experimental program dedicated to taking back our sonic landscape. Jordan Koe is a Tetlit Gwich'in Dinjii living on the occupied territories of the Lkwungen and SENĆOŦEN speaking peoples.

Lekwungen Youth "Unity" Mural

In concert with LAND BACK, we are excited to present the Lekwungen Youth Unity Mural! Over the month of September, Open Space collaborated with artists Brianna Bear, Nicole Neidhardt, and the University of Victoria’s School of Child and Youth Care’s Kinship Rising project to create a mural with Lekwungen youth about the importance of these lands and waters to their sense of identity & well-being. The mural will be on view in the gallery through the duration of the show. See more.
