Midnight Breed #17

Fall of Night

Rate this book
Breed warrior Micah is one of the Order’s best, his reputation for cold justice and lethal skill rivaled only by that of his formidable father, Tegan. So, when a mission Micah’s leading in an off-limits area called the Deadlands goes terribly wrong, leaving him the sole survivor of an apparent Atlantean attack, he won’t rest until he has answers...and vengeance for his fallen team.

Phaedra thought it was only a dream, a hideous nightmare. Yet somehow, she had been transported from her life in Rome to a stretch of barren forest when it suddenly lit up with unearthly fire, obliterating everything in its path—including the fiercely handsome Breed warrior she’d encountered in the dream. Or so she believed, until their paths cross again and Phaedra finds herself, and her Atlantean people, at the center of Micah’s wrath.

With tensions between the Breed and the Atlanteans already edging toward war, and another powerful nemesis growing bolder by the day, uncovering the stunning truth about what happened in the Deadlands will force Micah and Phaedra to work together in an alliance forged by fate and an undeniable desire neither of them can resist.

HOLY SHIT

Superb - I loved Phaedra and Micah, they are the kind of couple I absolutely adore reading about but because I've followed this series from book 1, I know the world and its background, thus making these novels an excellent addition to the series.

Lara Adrian is one of my favourite authors, I love the Breed books, she has a unique way of capturing the reader with her words and pulling us into the world of vampires and their quest for peace (alongside meeting their mates). Sadly, for me, it sounds like the next book is the last and although I am excited to see how this all ends.....

I don't want to see those final words!

Another outstanding book from the midnight breed series by Lara Adrian! I love these alien vampire warriors with their amber cat like gazes and their total bad ass attitudes and even at book 17 of the series I still am so obsessed with each and every book that comes out. The chemistry between Micah and phaedra was hot, sexy and intense and one of my new favorite couples. Theirs alot going on in this book with plenty of action and the storytelling and the characters layered and flawlessly written making you feel as if you are privy to this paranormal world where the breed fight and love for their happy endings. I can't say enough about the amazingly talented Lara Adrian, she is one of my top 10 best of all time writers and every book that she puts out is a five star read and a author that will always be a must read every time. I don't want to give too much away about Fall of Night because its that fabulous!!! I will say that theirs plenty of steamy scenes and a few WTF's and the ending that lets you know that more shit's gonna go down not only from the breeds enemy Opas but from one they didn't see coming! Can't wait for the next book!!! Until next time Luv's💗💋

This one was just ok for me. I liked Phaedra but Micah, not so much. He was an ass from the start and didn't really change for most of the book. Even after the they had sex, he was an ass.

I found Phaedra and her connection to the crystals interesting, especially when we learned more about the white doe. I liked how Phaedra was able to protect everyone when needed. It will be interesting to see where things go from here with the crystals.

4 1/2 "Not so Deadland" Stars!

Wow! I was not expecting that! I like Micah and Phaedra just fine. Their push and pull was good, but this one was all about the overall Breed story arch. And I am here for it! Boy oh boy I cannot wait until September. Happy reading!

Leider hat mir dieser Band wieder nicht so gut gefallen, für mich ist die Reihe seit dem die neue Generation da ist ein starkes auf und ab mit mehreren Tiefschlägen. Sehr schade um so eine geniale Reihe.

Breed Warrior Micah entire team has been killed by some kind of UV light. Micah has had this dream continually about what happen in the Siberian forest.

Phaedra an Atlantean has also had the exact same dream as Micah. When they meet up Micah blames Phaedra for killing his team. Sparks Fly.

Opus is still attacking the Breed. I didn't like that the Order did not have a massive strike against Opus. It felt like they got away with the massive attacks against The Order. There should have been some type of revenge after Eli a Breed Warrior was killed.

The end of the story was abrupt. But overall Fall of Night was a fast pace read. I really enjoyed visiting with all the Original Order members. We finally get some more information on Jenna and the impact of what the Ancient Gen One implanted into her.

You can tell that The Midnight Breed series is coming to an End. The final story will be King of Midnight which will be released later this year. I have it on Pre Order!!

4.5 stars!

An exciting, action-packed and passionately romantic read, I have been so looking forward to reading this book! Tegan and Elise (from Midnight Awakening) are my favourites of the original Midnight Breed couples, and this is the story of their son, Micah, who is now all grown up, and a fierce warrior fighting for The Order, just like his father before him.

Phaedra is an Atlantean, once part of the court and tightly bound to her race and its power, but she has been living among humans in Rome for centuries (she is best friends with fellow Atlanean, Sia, and appears in Midnight Unleashed).

Phaedra has been having a recurring dream where she stumbles through a barren forest in the snow following a white doe, but her dream changes one night when she encounters a gorgeous but mysterious warrior, right before the world explodes in tremendous light. It may be a dream for Phaedra, but for Micah it’s very real. His dreams have also led him to the forbidden Deadlands, but when he leads his team there in real life, he shares a moment of intensity with a beautiful woman before a blast wipes his entire team out and he is left near death.

The Breed and the Atlanteans have a tense relationship, and the two nations are on the verge of war, so Micah obviously blames the mysterious Atlantean woman for the horrific explosion and he is a man on a mission of vengeance. But when he encounters Phaedra again, he learns that not all is as it seems, and more than that, he discovers that fate led them both to the forest that night, tying them both together in a destiny that Micah wants no part of.

It’s a great set-up, and I was fully on board as Phaedra teams up to help The Order get to the bottom of the attack. And at the same time, local terrorist organisation Opus Nostrum is still waging war on the Breed nation. It’s exciting with great action, and it’s made all the more awesome when so many characters from the previous books join to be a part of it all.

And in the middle of everything, Micah and Phaedra are fighting a hopeless battle to stay away from one another. The chemistry between them sizzles, and the sexual tension is spine-tingling, with every glance, every snarky comment and every heart-felt moment creating this delicious sense of expectation, just waiting for something to happen between them. Phaedra is more accepting of their situation than Micah, and she has a battle on her hands with her fierce warrior, but even he can’t deny the bond between them, and their coming together is passionate and intense with some beautifully sweet moments.

She’d belonged to him from the instant he spotted her.

It’s so, so satisfying watching the big, strong, ruthlessly cold warriors fall, and just like his father before him, Micah falls spectacularly.

“You’re mine,” he growled as he rocked into her. “I’ve known it all along. Even fate knows you’re mine, Phaedra.”

I loved the chance to catch up with other characters from the series, and particularly enjoyed seeing so much of Tegan and Elise, who have taken a bit of a back seat since their own book. They are still blissfully happy together, and seeing Tegan in the role of father was a real highlight of this book for me as he helped his boy on his journey.

“I can’t tell you anything about fate. I only know what I see in you when you’re looking at her. Trust me when I tell you, son, life is for the living. I suggest you get on with it…before you let her walk away.”

Some of the stone that seemed to enclose Tegan cracked with the fond look he held on his only son. “Whatever you decide to do, I’ll support you. And I’ll be proud of you. I always have been.”

And in a delightful little bonus, watching Micah fall for Phaedra had some gorgeously reminiscent moments from when his father fell for his mother…

Micah to Phaedra:
She was his. God help her, but he belonged to her too.

Tegan to Elise:
“Do I love you? Yeah, God help you, but I do”

*dreamy sigh*

This book is on the shorter side and the story moves at a fast pace, but the fact that there are supernatural powers at play make it completely acceptable and believable (in a paranormal sort-of way). I could feel the connection between Micah and Phaedra, and loved how they found their way to each other – so freaking hot, and with a lot of heart.

For the series, the plot is thickening. Enemies of the Breed seem to be getting bolder, and a new threat has been uncovered which will change everything going forward. I love the tie-ins to other books of the series, and love how there is ongoing development for previous couples. There’s a lot of depth in this world, and I’m so excited for whatever is coming next.

4.5 stars!

Sadly, this is likely the weakest book of the series and would have worked better as a novella rather than a full-length book. Plot seemed very rushed with very little work done to develop anything as far as Phaedra and Micah is concerned. They go from complete strangers to deeply in love in just days, and while insta-love doesn't usually annoy me, in this situation it just made me go *but why?*. Here's to hoping the next one doesn't feel so forced.

Es gab also wieder ganz neue Aspekte.

There are more than twenty books -including the novellas- of Midnight Breed and Next Generation and I have enjoyed every single of them since they first published, more than a decade ago. They are not your typical vampire romance books; they are perfect mix of romance, action, friendship, loyalty, mystery and the paranormal world. Ms Lara Adrian still writes them, I still read them. I have been looking forward to reading the story of Micah, who is the son of Elise and Tegan from Midnight Awakening, Book #3 and Atlantean Phaedra.
The mission of the warriors of the ORDER has not completed. Opus Nostrum is still the biggest threat and there is only one book left King of Midnight which -I guess- will be the story of Darion Thorne, son of leader of the Breed Lucan Thorne & Gabrielle from Book #1 and perhaps Atlantean Queen Selene???
It was good to see the previous couples and their soul bond. I liked seeing Jenna&Brock for example.
This one was a little bit rushed, emotions were lacked and the MCs were flat. As I said, I have been involved Midnight Breed series since the beginning, this book was short and left me wanting more. I like the depth of the Midnight Breed world and I feel sad for the upcoming final book.

Micah is Tegan's son from the original Breed crew. He meets Atlantean Phaedra when she's walking in the Dreamscape and he's in the deadlands in Siberia. Tragedy happens. But are Micah and Phaedra fated mates for meeting in the Dreamscape?

Phaedra is intimately involved with the crystals that the Breed need to collect and keep safe. They can be used as weapons.

The Opus Nostrum is up to deadly tricks in this book, with tragic consequences.

They find a surprise.

In all, this is a book filled with action, suspense, deaths, enemies at every turn, new revelations, and insta-love.

COMMENTS/NOTES: Micah is definitely a grumpy hero. He blames himself and Phaedra for losing his unit. They dreamscape- both have same dream at the same time (fated mates). I felt for Phaedra missing her parents and using the crystal to connect w/ them. Also, the tension between Micah and Tegan with Micah trying to be the perfect soldier for his father. I disliked the ending though, felt unfinished after a big build up. Hope the final book solves everything with Opus, Ancients, and Atlanteans.

This is the first book in this series that I have been wildly disappointed in. At first I was disappointed that it was only 190 pages on Kindle, and then it couldn't end quickly enough. This was one of the characters that I couldn't wait to read about, but now it feels like I wasted time and energy.

I understand that every new book has to have some form of recap and world intro, but it just felt so force fed and in your face. If this was supposed to be a novella I wouldn't have thought twice about and expected everything to be crammed and fast paced. Except this wasn't supposed to be a novella (I'm pretty sure anyhow). On the other hand, so much of the story was repetitive phrasing and explanations and complaints. Without that filler, the book would have been even shorter.

As far as characters go, I did like them. They had potential as a couple. I will say that Micah as a whole let me down. His character wasn't what it could have been, he felt lacking. Him saying that he was born for his work and couldn't have any other distractions or open his heart to anything else annoyed me. Especially when he said so to his father. As if everyone from the OG order didn't think and feel the exact same way. As if his father didn't play that part himself. Not once did anyone point out this fact.

Phaedra wasn't as wholesome as I wanted either. For being over a thousand years old she lacks depth and experience. She could have been 20-something and it wouldn't have changed the story in the slightest, and probably would have made more sense (if we're ignoring the fact that her parents died while she was a baby and their story is needs to take place that long ago). As far as her bleeding heart goes, her having a dead husband came out of left field, it did little to nothing for the story. Whereas the women and children that she held so near and dear were barely mentioned. It would have made so much more sense if there were actual named people she had a connection to in her home, versus just a generalized 'hey, there are some people back home that need me'. It would have correlated so much better when Micah said she couldn't understand the loss of his men.

All in all, I'm disappointed, but the ending had a decent cliff hanger and I'm exciting for what comes next.

SPOILERS AHEAD, BE WARNED!

Even though Micah got on my nerves a lot, and Phaedra acted like she is 20 not 200 years old they still managed to be a cute pairing.

This book came out all of a sudden and it felt like it. I liked the story (which was really short), I liked the main pairing but still, I felt like everything and nothing happened. The one last Ancient is alive and kicking, Opus Nostrum is still out there and Selene is being a mysterious threat. I expect a lot of things to happen in the next book...

Another amazing read, for sure, by one of my All Time Favorite Authors. I was totally captivated from the opening until the final scenes. All things I loved about the series were all there, in this rather short yet super sweet novel. And OMG‼️ What a Star-Studded little novel❣️It read like a Love Letter from the Author to Her Loyal Readers 💝

I was in awe and so ecstatic when Phaedra suddenly discovered her staggering defensive power in the nick of time~just when she needed to protect and saved Micah's and the other Order warriors' lives. My heart melted when Micah caved and fell in love with Phaedra after trying so hard to see her as an enemy.

The heart-pounding fighting scenes were gripping. I was yelling (silently) and cheering for the Order to just wipe out the vicious Opus Nostrum's attackers‼️

Loved so much when my Hero "Sterling Chase", as well as all my other favorite characters, walked in and led the fights.

Looking forward to reading the Finale King of Midnight on September 30th❣️ And yes, I've already preordered it.

Sharing one of my favorite scenes:

"I just had the strangest dream, Micah. I was walking along the old Atlantis shore. You were there with me."

He smiled, unsurprised. "I know. I just woke up from the same one."

He opened his other hand, and in the center of his palm was the white shell she had been holding in the dream. She stared at that tiny, iridescent heart and drew in her breath.

"Micah, I picked up that shell on the beach. I was holding it when you appeared."

He tilted his head, brows drawn together. "I picked it up from the sand. I was holding it when you appeared."

This review was originally posted at Rantings of a Reading Addict

I was not surprised at the intensity of Micah, knowing he is Tegan's son. He takes his responsibilities to the Order, as well as his fellow soldiers so seriously that when something happens to his whole team, he will not stop until he finds answers and avenges them. The whole incident is beyond what anyone could have predicted and becomes a true mystery to be solved.

Phaedra's involvement is suspect. She is seen at the location, knows all about the incident and just happens to be Atlantean. Why should any of them believe her story?

Despite the suspicion between them, the pull is undeniable. This means we get the problem of one step forward, two steps back. The tension gets real and frustrating, making me want to throw the book at times. However, those intense feelings about a book tell you I was highly invested in the story. I didn't feel the awkwardness I thought I would feel reading about a child of the original members of the Order, and I thoroughly enjoyed getting to interact with Tegan and the others. I love that tie-in.

That inclusion of the original Order members is big in this story and it takes their skills to figure out the mystery. I was so surprised at how the story played out! It was completely unexpected and one thing after another kept happening and I was sitting on the edge of my seat throughout the discovery phase and ending. I can't wait to see the ending to this series (which is the next book due out in March 2022).

Fall of Night is almost the last book in Lara Adrian’s Breed series and damn she has played the long game sooooo well. I am as invested in Micah and Phaedra as I was in OG Tegan and Elise.

Phaedra who we met several books ago is an exiled Atlantean who meets Micah in a dreamscape where his team dies but he lives. Now they are working together to find two of the lost Atlantean crystals before the evil Atlantean Queen does, stop Opus Nostrum and they fall in love.

For me, Micah and Phaedra were more of a slow burn than previous couples but it worked. Phaedra is powerful and needed to come into her own before she could be with Micah and Micah needed to get over the guilt of losing his team. The fast paced plot moved the seires along and I can’t wait for the finale!

I enjoyed this though it felt a bit rushed with a lot of things going on. Well narrated by Hillary Huber with many appearances by familiar characters. I was surprised to see the series is wrapping up with the next book, especially because it seemed like more doors were opened than closed in this book.

3.5 - 4.0 ***

I'm a few books behind in the series and there's quite a bit going on in preparation for the series conclusion.

Micah reminded me of Teagan except he didn't whine as much. I didn't dislike Micah or Phaedra. I thought they were OK as a couple. I did have trouble understanding what ancient Atlantean Phaedra saw in young, conflicted Micah. The relationship evolved so quickly they barely got to know each other.

The addition of one more ancient running amok is sure to have consequences for the Order and the Atlanteans.

Finding the right words to say just how much I enjoyed this book eludes me. I felt the wave of concern for Lucan as the breeds battle the latest evil targeted at them, Elise’s dread at the possibility of losing her husband or son and took the journey with each of the characters throughout.
Micah and Phaedra were so different but also so alike their characters are dynamic and their interaction compelling. Fall of Night is well written and delivered perfectly and I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Amazing!
Another great read, finally we learn more about Jenna and the results of her time with the Ancient. Lovely to check in with the members of The Order, Tegan in particular and this story centres around his son Micah who is a warrior for the order.
Micah leads his team into a catastrophe, the result he is the only survivor - he is saved by a mysterious women as he’s drawn to her. Suddenly, she disappears only to meet him in person and sparks fly. He is consumed with anger as he distrusts everything she is.
Fantastic story arc, I’ll be sad to read the finale. Love these warriors.

Very enjoyable but entirely too short. Miss when this series had super long and detailed stories. Sad to know this series is ending with the next book and there is so much remaining to be answered after this book I'm not sure how she'll do it.

Fantastic. This book brought out every emotion for me. I laughed, cried, smiled with joy & was shocked beyond belief. It was just an amazing addition to the series. So many new ideas of what is going to happen and who the true evil really is. Micah & Phaedra are a fantastic couple.
I received an ARC for my honest review.

It's been a while since I've last read this series but coming back to it always feels so welcoming. I read this book almost in one setting, enjoying the ride, and everything that is unfolding towards the final installment. I admit I waited with this one a bit because I wanted it to be closer to the release of the last book and I think it was a good idea as the ending brings even more complexity than I would have thought. Also I really enjoyed getting a bit more of the original couples - Tegan and Elise - as Micah's parents but also a quite surprising part with Jenna and Brock (From "Taken by Midnight"). Truth being told I forgot there were some unfinished business concerning her special ability.

Micah and Phaedra couldn't be more different. He, the son of Breed Warrior Tegan and his breedmate Elise, worked hard to become a fighter his legendary father can be proud of. Sharing his mother's gift of telepathically hearing the sins of humans has hardened him even more, making him one of the best warriors in the Order, currently in command of covet ops. She, and Atlantean living among humans for centuries dedicating her life to stopping the cycle of violence, running a shelter for women and children in need. They meet for the first time in the deadlands of Siberian taiga for a brief moment before a deadly light kills all Micah's team, and severely wounding him. For Phaedra this was just a bad dream, or so it seems, after a week long of dreaming of walking through those deadlands following a white doe. Micah experienced those same dreams himself which is what made him try and find this place. He didn't expect it would cost him (and his teammates) so much.

Distraught, Phaedra accepts her friend Sia's recommendation of visiting the Colony (where the Atlanteans who oppose or were banished by Queen Selene live). Meeting Zael (in order to get there) at the Order's compound in Rome brings her face to face with the Breed Warrior from her dream but his angry face is not what she expected to see.

The only way Phaedra can interpret her connection with Micah (through the "Dream World") is them having a special bond, similar to the one her parents shared, in which they walk together in Dreamscape (seeing with one set of eyes - as one). But Micah doesn't buy the whole "Destiny" , "Fate" or whatever the Atlanteans call it. Yet it doesn't take him long to realize there couldn't really be anything suspicious about her and her actions. She is generally a good person, liked by people he knows and trusts it's just THEM together, really is confusing. He is drawn to her, but it's not enough. His life is his job at the Order.

While Phaedra was suppose to return home (to Rome) after she (and Micah) explained to Lucas Throne (the head of the order) what happened in the Deadlands, further circumstances prevents her from retuning right away and not only because of Opus Nostrum and their involvement with further attacks with lethal weapons (to the Breed). Yet what Micah and Phaedra stumbled upon in the Siberian taiga is FAR more complicated and has a direct link to everything they have been working on concerning the crystals and the Atlanteans. I wish I could say this book brings a closure to ANY of the things they were dealing with but sadly on ALL fronts (except for Phaedra and Micah themselves) the book ends in a more cryptic way than it started. I wouldn't say it's a cliff hanger exactly.. But there's A LOT to uncover in the last and final installment..

And what about our couple? There's the instant connection we're used to, though both parties feel a bit reluctant - each for his/her own reasons - and yet even with how different they are they still have a a similar fierceness. Micah is a formidable warrior, but Phaedra isn't the kind to cower in fear. I liked the progression of their relationship mostly from her POV. She wanted him and she wasn't going to apologize about it, when she decided she wanted his company it was from her own free will. He was far more complex. I think mostly because she was offering him something that would change his life and he wasn't ready for it. Not now and maybe not ever. But not everything is as it seems..

There's less than a month till the final one! Truly can't wait!
