Marie James is a mother of two boys and wife of 17 years. She's spent most of her life lifetime living in central Texas, with only short stays in South Carolina, Alabama, and Florida. Her passions include reading everything under the sun and sewing, although she doesn't get to sew much these days!.
Writing has always been a passion and she's enjoying every step of the journey!
Calculated Risk is such delightful read. Usually the milotary romance is about the hero. Their selfles act, their courage and bravery. Miss James takes her story into the next level. She adds some fun into the interaction between the characters.
I like military romance in general. I always looking for the author who can put more than just standard military romance. Definetly looking forward for the next book from Miss James.
#BlackbridgeSpecial wasn't meant to be a pickup ploy but it worked in Quinten's favor when Hayden joined his gun safety class.
Hayden Prescott's home was broken into so her girlfriend, Parker, convinced her to take a gun safety course to protect herself because Hayden was feeling anything but safe since the break in. Blackbridge Security was hosting a six week course to help women learn to protect themselves with a weapon and Quinten Lake thought he drew the short stick when he was tasked with teaching the class but when he laid eyes on the pint-sized beauty he knew he was in big trouble.
This story not only had a lot of suspense to it but it had tons of heat too. The chemistry was great but the buildup was even better. I love when things aren't a given right away and they need to be worked at. There are a few things happening at the same time here and it definitely built up my anticipation for the next book.
If you enjoy Romantic Suspense, Steamy Reads, Close Proximity, or Opposites Attract Romances I would recommend this book to you.
The story had the perfect mix of chemistry romance and a tad bit of drama and suspense. One thing we loved was the fact Quinten was floundering when it came to Hayden and vice versa, which made things funny and interesting. One more thing about this story and it's series and the men in it is the fact once they claim their women it's full throttle from here on out. We loved the chemistry between these two and even the bit of cat and mouse they played with one another. Puff daddy always makes us laugh, and that is a plus in our book. A light fun romance read that just takes a couple of hours to read that had awesome characters, heat, romance and was a great way to pass the time.
Calculated Risk is book 5 in Blackbridge Security series by Marie James. This story is about Quinten and Hayden. They start off enemies-to-friends-to(finally)-lovers. This story has this romantic suspense vibe/read to it that fits it from the very start, along with slow burning romance vibes. Hayden and Quinten’s love stop>Hayden and Wu%r)ry is beautiful. The chemistry and connection that spirals up between them is sizzling hot 🔥. Hayden and Quinten both fight the attraction that comes up - at first. They each had reasons to fight the attraction but the feels and sizzle and chemistry between them keeps bringing them back towards one another. I enjoyed the plot, characters, good humor, heartwarming likeabilitability of all involved and the hotness of Quinten. I look forward to the next book in the series.
A hot, little love story and Puff Daddy - who could ask for more? (Apparently, me! LOL) It is a good addition to the series! Congratulations & Best Wishes to the Bride & Groom!
4.25 stars--CALCULATED RISK is the fifth instalment in Marie James’ contemporary, adult BLACKBRIDGE SECURITY erotic, romantic suspense series focusing on the men and women who work for Blackbridge Security. This is thirty-five year old, crisis management consultant/fixer Quinten Lake, and twenty-nine year old accountant Hayden Prescott’s story line. CALCULATED RISK can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.
Told from dual first person perspectives (Hayden and Quinten) CALCULATED RISK follows in the aftermath of a break in. Hayden Prescott no longer feels safe, and at he insistence of her best friend Parker Maxwell, attends a self defense/ weapons class sponsored by Blackbridge Security where she will meet the man with whom she will fall in love. Enter Blackbridge Security crisis management consultant Quinten Lake. Before class ever begins, fellow security specialist Wren Nelson (Shot in the Dark 2) presents our hero with a list focusing on several issues of which each attendee has struggled, and Quinten soon learns that a house-invasion has left our heroine frightened for her life. As a reluctant Hayden begins to assert herself in learning to fire a weapon, our heroine finds herself the target of an unknown assailant who has target Hayden for perceived betrayal. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Hayden and Quinten, and the potential fall-out as Hayden finds herself not once but twice target for who she is, and what she might know.
The relationship between Quinten and Hayden begins acrimoniously as Quinten is reluctant to teach a glass to a group of women but meeting Hayden and her best friend Parker pushes all of Quinten’s buttons and both women leave the class before it ever gets started. As the days turn into weeks, the attraction between Hayden and Quinten grows stronger but an attack against Hayden finds our couple as roommates, then lovers, then more. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including most of the couples we have met in previous storylines as well as Wren’s foul-mouthed bird ‘Puff Daddy. We are introduced to Hayden’s best friend Parker Maxwell, who may or may not have a thing for security specialist Jude Morris. The requisite evil has many faces.
CALCULATED RISK is a story of friendships and family; betrayal and revenge; love, relationship and happily ever after. The premise is intriguing, captivating and engaging; the romance is seductive and intense; the characters are energetic and dynamic-the camaraderie between the men who work at Blackbridge Security if fun, fast and frenetic.
"God, the woman brings me to my knees, and I don't think she even realizes it."
Quinten Lake is not happy about having to teach a six-week class on firearms to a bunch of women who may possibly have signed up for all the wrong reasons. However, from the moment he sees Hayden Prescott, he can't stop thinking about her. It's unfortunate that they get off on the wrong foot.
"I feel whole for the first time in a long time while I'm in his arms."
Hayden doesn't even want to be at the firearms course but her bestie dragged her along to it, not just for the man-candy, but also because Hayden was the victim of a recent home burglary and has been jumpy ever since. Quinten is nothing like the men she usually goes for but she can't help being attracted to him. She tried to keep him at arm's length, but when her safety is compromised, Quinten can think of no better place to keep her safe than at his apartment.
"I feel like I've been waiting for you, and I didn't know know it."
I loved Quinten. He was a bear of a man but so gorgeous, protective and alpha. He was adorable as he fumbled his way into a relationship with Hayden, so unsure of himself and how to read her. Hayden was pretty prickly. I don't know why she resisted so hard in the first place but I loved it when she gave in to her attraction to Quinten. This was a fab, enjoyable, sexy read with a touch of suspense.
Quinten is teaching women how to use a gun and is the fixer at Blackbridge Security. Hayden and her friend signed up for a class. Hayden is an accountant with trauma from the past. She doesn't seem to be impressed with Quinten like all the other women. Quinten finds Hayden attractive and wants to fix everything for her. The couple are cute together with the occasional bumps along the way in the relationship. Another good read in this series.
Quinten's Blackbridge Security's fixer. So why is his boss tasking him with teaching a self defense/weapons class to women Wren has pinpointed through research and bot data collection? There are more than a few guys at Blackbridge who could/should teach this class, not him. But when a gorgeous woman walks into the class with her friend, he just might start thanking Deacon rather than glaring at him.
Hayden's been having nightmares and is feeling unsafe in her home ever since there was a break-in. The cops haven't done anything to solve the case, and she can't figure out a way to get her norm back. When her friend Parker convinces her to attend a self defense class, she's not anywhere near thrilled with the idea. She has no desire to learn how to handle and/or shoot a gun. But what Parker wants, Parker gets, so she's here. Too bad the instructor is a big grumpster who can't seem to manage a smile. He's not her type at all no matter that Parker's gushing over him and how big his hands are and how well he fills out his jeans. So why's her stomach filled with butterflies whenever he looks at her? She has no idea that big grumpster is the man who will change her life, who will protect her, save her, and give her her security back when she needs him the most, even if it means she has to move in with him until the situation is resolved.
Quinten's never felt anything like he does for Hayden. Suddenly he's feeling growly and possessive over her, and wants her for longer than a night. When he moves her in as part of protecting her, his feelings come to a head, and he's not sure what to do. All he knows for sure is that she's it for him. Does she feel the same? He damn well hopes so...
I've been loving the men and women of Blackbridge Security. Each couple's story is a seamless blend of action and romance as they fall in love and battle the forces out to bring them down. Quinten and Hayden are so good together - each is filled with doubts, but their connection and chemistry can't be denied. They're a sweet and sexy pair of opposites - the big, grumpy teddy bear and the tiny, pocket sized woman who tilts his world upside down and inside out.

Mary – ☆☆☆☆☆ CALCULATED RISK brings you back to the world of the Blackbridge Security team and this story is about Quinten and Hayden. He is tasked to teach a class on gun use to a group of women who are in need of self-defense. Each one has been looked into to make sure they are in the class for the right reasons. When Quinten sees Hayden, there is something about her that draws him in, he wants to know her story and why she is in the class.
Hayden doesn't want to be in the class, she just wants her life back. She sees the handsome alpha male teaching the class, but she doesn't want to get close to him. Can she trust him enough to teach her how to get her life back?
I have loved each of these stories and I think this one is my favorite so far. And I have to say, I am still loving that crazy bird, Puff Daddy. He will make you laugh at any time.
Grab this series and start reading, you will not be disappointed. I cannot wait for more.
Avid Reader – ☆☆☆☆ M/F Romance
Quinten is not one for being patient when it comes to his job. He likes to be the fixer. To get in, get things done, and get out. But when he’s somehow roped in to teaching a gun safety class, with no wiggle room to escape, he knows he’ll just have to suck it up.
Hayden has had her personal bubble popped, and now she’s being dragged to a gun safety class by her best friend. It’s all she can do just to show up to the class, but when the instructor is rude and a jerk, she knows she should’ve just stayed home and had some wine in her sweatpants.
With Quinten and Hayden off to a rocky start, they both have to learn to give and receive lessons, attitude, and love. You will love their chemistry and I really liked how Quinten was willing to wait Hayden out.
The conflict in the story was slightly strange for me. It felt like an afterthought. And while I did enjoy the story, the best friend’s dalliance with the other member of Blackbridge Security was also somewhat distracting.
However, I thought that these characters were well planned and had good chemistry. I am looking forward to reading more of this series.

This is the fifth installment of the Blackbridge Security Series and every bit as good as all the others. This book can easily be read as a standalone book as anything important is brought forward. I do suspect you will be intrigued to go back and read the others though. We have an opposites attract, protector story with a good mix of witty banter to smooth out the danger and seriousness.
Quinton Lake is the fixer of the team, so he isn't certain why he has been chosen to teach the gun handling course to a group of women. He tries everything he can to pass the book onto someone else. He is quick to pull Jude in when he gets added to the mix. Struggling with the attention and trying hard to make sure these ladies get the knowledge needed. But there is one woman that he keeps finding himself drawn to.
Hayden was signed up for this course by her friend after her house was invaded to help her feel more confident. She is constantly being pulled out of her shell by Parker who only wants what is best for her. Her life is simple between her accounting job and spending time with her friend, she doesn't get out too much. She is the first to admit that she doesn't really feel comfortable in her own home anymore.
Hayden is super cautious when Quinton tries to show her some attention. She isn't sure what to think. But as things start to get weird at work she is glad to have his attention. When Quinton realizes that there might be a real threat to Hayden he goes into full protector mode. Will this bring them closer together or will she continue to push him away?
I am completely enjoying this series so far. The stories always pull me in on an adventure.

This is book #5 in a series and my first book by this author.
It usually feels strange jumping in the middle of a series, but this author did a great job in providing the tidbits we love to find within a series while keeping the main story's focus on the couple. Quinten and Hayden are pure opposite attracts. Her petite to his massive, his scowling and big presence to her shyness. He is a big teddy bear and she's a bit of spitfire. In this aspect, it was a bit predictable, however, Quinten was written as a self-aware, confident man that found was he was looking for in Hayden.
My friends, there are few things more romantic than a man that finds what he's looking for and stays there and remains loyal. Sign me up for a Quinten every damn day of the week, I am all in!
The suspense elements of the story were pretty obvious, which honestly, it's one of my pet peeves. Dear romantic suspense authors, please put a little bit more mystery in the suspense part of this romantic suspense equation.
Luckily, this story is well written and the world-building is great, which is what made this book for me.
However, there's a loose end that bugged me and I hope it gets solved in a subsequent book. I wish it would've been solved in this one. I feel it wasn't necessary to leave it hanging because I am already invested in these characters as to want to read the next and prior books (and I am sure I am not the only one).
Al in all, an entertaining story with great world-building and secondary characters, including a batshit crazy African Grey (I can vouch for these birds' intelligence, as I raised one of these little hellions)

I enjoyed going on this intriguing, suspenseful and sinfully sensual journey with Quinten and Hayden. Their chemistry was palpable but the connection they developed was simply beautiful. They are both a little awkward around each other but it was absolutely adorable. I loved everything about this story.
HOLY HELL I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Blackbridge Security series. Each hero is so original but all are hilarious in their own ways, but once again, Puff Daddy steals the show. That dirty bird had me laughing so hard I was in fear of wetting my pants, and he only gets worse (more hilarious) with each new book LOL! Quinten has somehow landed teaching a gun safety class for women when another member couldn't do it, and he sure wasn't happy about it. He came off very grumpy that first class, and had one of the women handpicked for this class for a reason, leaving before it ever started. Hayden had a break in which has long term fear in the aftermath, and she sure doesn't like to go anywhere where there are people, but she's pretty much forced by her bestie to take this class so Quinten's attitude that first class didn't do him any favor. She didn't plan to come back but he made a follow up call, so she reluctantly came back. They have a connection, but Hayden isn't a girl who is easy on men LOL! It takes more danger stalking her for her to actually end up staying with him in forced proximity which could lead to all kinds of sexy things. Calculated Risk has everything I love in my books, hilarious moments, super sexy times, suspense with big twists, and all the cast of supporting characters that try to steal the show. I simply CANNOT WAIT for the next book (as usual), so I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!
4.5 Star review of Calculated Risk (Blackridge Security #5) by Marie James Marie James is a new author to me and I am not sure why I have not come across her books before. This was a well written, entertaining story that ticked the boxes for me. This is Black bridge Security fixer, the man everyone turns to when they need problems solved, Quinten Lake and Hayden Prescott’s story. Quinten is initially frustrated when he is given the job of teaching the self defence class , however in my opinion he was the perfect choice.
I loved how kind and patient Quinten is with Hayden as he guides her and teaches her about gun safety and how to protect herself. You could feel the anxiousness of Hayden as well which added an additional layer to the story. On paper these two could not be more different and yet opposites attract. The chemistry that sizzles between these two is intense and it was entertaining to watch them both fight the attraction. When danger once again rears it’s head and Hayden is put in jeopardy, Quinten will step up. The twists and turns kept me on the edge of my seat at times and I enjoyed the witty banter. The camaraderie of the Blackridge security team is obvious as you read and after having read Calculated Risk I will be looking at the other books in this series as soon as time permits.

Calculated Risk (Blackbridge Security #5) by Marie James 4 stars M/F Romance I was given this book for an honest review by Wicked Reads.

I was pulled right into this story. The story has laughs, pain, secrets, suspense, and heartbreak.
If you have not read the below I would recommend reading them first: Hostile Territory (Blackbridge Security, #1) Shot in the Dark (Blackbridge Security #2) Contingency Plan (Blackbridge Security, #3) Truth Be Told (Blackbridge Security #4)
This is Hayden and Quinten’s story. Quinten is tasked with teaching an all-woman’s class gun safety. Hayden is a part of the class but leaves the first one after an incident. When he asks her to come back, she does not want to after all she never wanted to in the first place. They are drawn to each other, but both fight the pull. She needs a protector, and he is just right for the job, but will all the protectiveness prove to be too much for her to handle? What happens when danger comes around will she have the right kind of protection? They fell for each other when they were trying not too can they make something last together?
I loved these characters and the side characters. I felt I could connect with the characters and the story was a great read.
Love this and I love this series.... Quinten Lake is the company fixer, he’s a mountain of a man, bearded and tattooed with a gruff persona. When he is assigned the female gun safety course at the range he is not impressed...! Hayden Prescott is struggling to get past her fears and feelings of being violated after her home was broken into. Taking the course was meant to help her fight her fears and get her life back... never would she have anticipated meeting anyone quite like her new instructor. The chemistry is undeniable, Quinten can’t get Hayden out of his mind, she is tiny and delicate and he just wants to wrap her up and protect her, however she is made of sterner stuff! I loved their interactions together, the push and pull along with his protective nature was really lovely to read. Quinten is a great character and they are just perfect together. Some great hints for the next story and as always Puff Daddy and the guys at the office had me smiling!
Quinten is part of the Blackbridge Security team who despite his objections to the contrary finds himself tasked with teaching a course about personal security and firearms. He is dreading having to do this until he meets Hayden, one of his students.
After being the victim of a crime Hayden is feeling vulnerable so her best friend Parker decides that this is the way to regain her confidence even if she doesn’t agree. She may be attracted to the cantankerous instructor but that doesn’t mean she has to like him.
Quinten is attracted to Hayden from their first meeting and there isn’t anything he wouldn’t do to keep her safe while Hayden realizes that there is much more to the man than first appears.
Humorous interactions, hot chemistry, captivating characters and a little intrigue all combine into a story you won’t be able to put down.
Another fabulous addition to the Blackbridge Security series by Marie James. This series is so entertaining and the characters are so easy to love. Calculated Risk is the fifth book in this series and is that suspenseful romance with a hot alpha read that we have all came to love in this series. Quinten and Hayden romance is a slow burn that is full of twists that will pull you in from the beginning. And last but not least....Puff Daddy, from all the previous books, continued to provide multiple laughs. I would read this series just read what comes out of his mouth next! LOL I highly recommend reading this series in order due to the side characters from the previous books also being in the storyline.
Quinten was the problem solver for Blackbridge Security helping fix what others messed up but now he was taking on something else for the firm. He was the man who was putting on a self-defense/gun safety class and he wasn’t happy about it.
Hayden was an independent woman who had her life shook when there was a home invasion. Her friend signed her up for the gun safety class and that’s when things began to change for the feisty woman. She just wanted her self-assurance back and Quinten was the man for the job.
This story was full of suspense and steamy chemistry and had me flipping pages as quick as I could. Oh and how can I not mention Puff Daddy; he was just as hilarious as ever!!
I really loved this book. The two main characters just fell in love with each other, no drama, no angst. Sure it was a bit of a slow burn but there was a lot of sexual tension so I was satisfied. The secondary mystery aspect was fun too. 4½ stars
I loved their story and the way Quinton was so protective of her but I feel like there are multiple open storylines that hopefully Jude's story answers. One is the murdered woman and the other is with Tinley's boss. I know they saved her from the mafia (which I felt was rushed) but I don't feel like that storyline was resolved. A big part of her staying with Quinton was because the big boss hadn't been taken care of and he still wasn't taken care of after the kidnapping ... and the boss seemed to also have a vendetta against her. Basically this had far more questions than it solved.
I love this series the alpha males are nothing but hot and how they meet the women that make them drop to knees is Wow you must get this series and be prepared for the antics of the parrot in this series he had me laughs hard when he acts up I just couldn't stop you will not be disappointed in any of the stories and will want to see what happens next
These books always get me caught up. Hayden is accountant whose house was broken into. Parker her best friend suggest they take a gun class. Quintin is the teacher and he is not happy about any of this since it’s not his specialty. One look at Hayden and he is a goner
Employees of this security company are dropping one after the other! Good story despite the adult language and activities. Puff Daddy has more language skills than the regular African Gray does.
I just love these characters especially Puff Daddy. Hayden wanted to learn how to handle a gun after her house got broken into. Quinten will do anything to protect her. On to the next book.
