Her Reluctant Husband

Rate this book
I would do anything for my family, including marrying a man who hates me.
Not like I had a choice when the person who helped raise me tells me who I must marry in order to save my home.
When I came face to face with Alex Wilks again, the man who despises me and wishes I never stepped foot back into Kinder Falls after the day I left, I didn’t know what I was in for.
Alex was the boy I once idolized, but later, he became the man that broke my trust.
Both of us are reluctant to dig into the lies and secrets surrounding the night that broke us apart.
Because it might end up being the truth that destroys us.
One year.
We just have to survive one year.
The only thing is, we both have so much to lose.
But maybe everything to gain.

***Please Note: This story deals with sensitive subjects of sexual and physical abuse that might be hard for some readers. ****

Alex looks at me, looking constipated and sick. ❝June, will—Jesus—❞ he pauses as he runs his hands down his face, ❝will you marry me?

*crickets chirp*

Oh. . . oh no. I - I did not like this book, and not in a fun way. It was. . . *sighs* not good. And what's so frustrating is that Her Reluctant Husband could've been great. It had so much potential. Seriously, there was a delicious friends-to-lovers//enemies-to-lovers romance brewing, as well as an arranged marriage thrown in there for funsies. Therefore I ask, where did it all go wrong? Wellllll. . . I have some ideas.

ʙᴜᴛ ғɪʀsᴛ. . . -ˏˋ𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓹𝓸𝓼𝓲𝓽𝓲𝓿𝓮𝓼ˎˊ-
When the summer rain starts in June, I know my Ju-Ju is just around the corner and everything is gonna be alright.

ᴊᴜɴᴇ - ᴊᴜᴊᴜ - ᴍᴀᴅɪsᴏɴ

Hands down the best character in HER RELUCTANT HUSBAND was our leading lady, June "Ju Ju" Madison. Personally, I loved her character and it's because of how much I loved her that I hated that she settled, yes I said settled, for Alex Wilks. The shit she went through was harrowing and the fact that she not only survived, but fucking thrived says a lot about her character. She was resilient, actually displayed a backbone, was a true pillar of strength, allowed herself to be vulnerable, and was obviously such an empathetic person.
❝For fuck’s sake. I just want to be civil. Maybe we could survive this thing as friends. ❞
❝Not happening. ❞
Just because she caught me watching her last night doesn’t mean the beginning of a beautiful fucking friendship.
❝Fine,❞ she says gruffly and pours out the coffee into the sink. Then the mug hits the metal with a loud twang.

I just felt for her so much. The fact that she went through all that shit with Deacon by herself just broke my heart. In addition, I was just so mad on her behalf that seemingly no one believed her story. Ultimately, I'm glad she was able to escape her nightmare and get her happy ending. June deserved it.

ᴀᴜɴᴛ ʟɪᴢ

Aunt Liz was such a great character and she wasn't even alive. That's right, Aunt Liz was a fabulous character from beyond the grave. Not only did she set this whole crazy plan in motion - forcing Alex and June to get married - but she clearly had so much love for both June and Alex. Her letters to both of them were funny, poignant, beautiful, and gave great insight to her character. TBH, I kinda wish she hadn't died. I think she would've made the story a bit more well rounded, and served as a great mother figure to both Alex and June.

ᴀɴᴅ ɴᴏᴡ. . . -ˏˋ𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓷𝓮𝓰𝓪𝓽𝓲𝓿𝓮𝓼ˎˊ-
❝No buts. You’re going to end up losing her, and I don’t mean by leaving you and this house. She’s on the verge of crashing and burning with no one to catch her. And I think no matter how mad you are, you don’t want that.❞

✘ ᴀʟᴇx ᴡɪʟᴋs ✘

And here is where the book lost me. I - I think I was supposed to like Alex(?), and I'm almost positive I was supposed to be invested in the romance(?), buuuuuuut???? Yeah it was a no on both counts. Alex as a character was. . . kinda terrible, and due to that I never got on board with the romance. Like I stated above, June deserved better than Alex. There, I said it again, and I meant it. . . again.

There are a couple reasons why Alex rubbed me the wrong way, but the biggest reason, and what kept him from being redeemed - in my eyes at least - was that he didn't believe June.

~✨ ᴇxᴘᴏsɪᴛɪᴏɴ ᴛɪᴍᴇ ✨~

Basically, what you guys need to know is Alex, Alex's sister Kathleen, and June were all childhood friends. June and Alex always had a special relationship and slowly fell in love. However, in between all that Deacon, Alex's BFF, was becoming obsessed with June. He began to stalk her, physically and sexually assault her, and he threatened to kill her if she ever told anyone the truth. Eventually, Kathleen got the truth out of June, which is when shit really hit the fan.

Deacon not only figured out that Kathleen knew the truth, but he also became enraged when he found out that Alex and June slept together. In his rage Deacon rear-ended Kathleen and June while June was driving them home. Kathleen dies and pretty much the whole town of Kinder Falls, including Alex, blamed June for Kathleen's death.

We also find out much later that Deacon pretty much tortured June the night after and would have left her for dead if she hadn't managed to call the police. Oh and just for a bit more drama we also learn that Deacon got off scot free. He gets a slap on the wrist and leaves for Spain. Cue, 5 years later.

yeahhhhh, this book got weirdly dark at certain points. . . fun

~✨ ʙᴀᴄᴋ ᴛᴏ ᴀʟᴇx ✨~ The tone in this book is a whole other problem, but right now let's get back to the king of the assholes himself, Alex Wilkes. Essentially, what killed Alex's character for me was the way in which he believed Deacon over June. June, the supposed "love of his life," June his "childhood sweetheart," June the girl he "protected and watched over," that June. It just. . . left a horrible taste in my mouth. Now, at first I was willing to give him a tiny bit of slack. The shit that went down was traumatic, scary, sad, and heartbreaking. BUT, and this is where my main gripe with Alex comes into play, HE BELIEVED IN JUNE'S//BELIEVED SHE KILLED HIS SISTER FOR FIVE WHOLE YEARS.

That's right, he whole heartedly, 1000%, swear to all that is holy, believed that June murdered his sister. He refused to hear June out, he refused to hear his Aunt Liz out, he refused to listen to anyone. In addition, even after Aunt Liz pulled her whole "matchmaker beyond the grave" stunt he still refused to believe in June's innocence. Even though everyone around him was telling him, "heyyyyy you stubborn bish maybe you should hear what June has to say." Do you know who he believed instead? Deacon, and also Deacon's cousin, Whitney.

I just - gah. Where is the fucking loyalty, I mean really. See, usually in these types of books the heroine will act the martyr and bury that shit and everyone around her will assume she's guilty. Here? Nope. June was constantly telling him that he didn't have the full story. Aunt Liz's friends were constantly telling him he didn't have the full story. June's friends were constantly telling him he didn't have the full story.

ON TOP OF THAT, do you guys wanna know when he finally believed June? He finally pulled his head out of his ass at eighty-freaking-percent. That's just a disgrace. And TBH, he only really believed her after he double checked with Whitney (Deacon's cousin), Kathleen's old HS diary, and a letter that he found from Deacon to June.

Ultimately, June sums it up nicely here -
❝But the fact you even thought I would hook up with him at your company picnic, forget our last month together, just tells me everything about you.❞

Here -
❝I don’t care. You still listened.” She snatches her hand back. ❝She got in your head. Just like Deacon got in your head. I will always be the bad guy as long as someone has that say.❞

And here -
❝Because I love you.❞
She shakes her head. ❝I’m not sure you do.❞
❝I’m sure that I do because I don’t think I ever stopped.❞
❝You’re only saying this because you feel sorry for me now.❞
❝That’s not true.❞
❝Isn’t it though? You wouldn’t be like this if you didn’t find out the truth. This. Is. Guilt.❞

✘ ᴛʜᴇ ʀᴏᴍᴀɴᴄᴇ ✘

I've said it once, and I'll say it again, a romance usually doesn't work for me if I despise one//both of the characters. In this case, because I hated Alex Wilks (and his spineless attitude) I really couldn't buy into the romance between June and Alex. As I stated in my intro, I was actually really excited to start this book. The tropes at play were really intriguing and I couldn't wait to see how everything would play out.

However, the more I read the more I ended up hoping June would ditch town and find a sexy cowboy to fall in love with instead. I mean the book is set in Texas. It totally would've been plausible! Seriously, that woman deserved sooooooo much better than Alex Wilks. Not only does he clearly not respect her, but he doesn't even seem to like - or trust her - for 80% of the book. And honestly, it just sucked. June has been through a lot and she deserves to be with someone who will believe her and take her side no matter what.

Moreover, the chemistry between Alex and June was just. . . off. Or to put it another way, they had none. Supposedly they had both been in love with each other since they were kids, buuuuut I didn't sense it. Plus, the very first sex scene is just. . . cringe. It's clear that Alex is just having sex with June to get it out of his system, and June is doing it because she wants to be with someone who actually treats her kindly. IDK, it just felt. . . off. June deserved better than a hate f*ck, she really did. Their relationship (before 80%) always felt lopsided. You could tell that Alex cared for June, but at the same time you could sense that he hated her guts. That, coupled with the fact that he just straight up refused to listen to her//literally thought she murdered his sister?? gah, it just made the romance so hard to root for.

I will say though, the second proposal was actually really cute and very on brand for them -
❝June, I don’t want to lose any more moments with you. So, will you marry me? For real this time. Not because there is something to gain, but because I love you and I want to spend a fucking million years with you.❞
❝Sure.❞
❝Sure, honey bear, really?❞
❝At least it was a fucking yes, asshole.❞

✘ ʙᴀᴄᴋsᴛᴏʀʏ ᴘʟᴇᴀsᴇ ✘

Okay, I'm just gonna say it, the second big reason this book didn't work for me was because the connection between Alex and June was just. . . missing. What I mean is, there was a lot of telling vs. showing. Essentially, everyone and their mom was telling me that June and Alex had a love written in the stars. Meanwhile, I'm over here like -

Seriously, where, where was their connection? Cause from where I'm sitting 20 year old Alex was hitting on 16 year old June, and then when shit hit the fan he dropped her like a hot potato. And yet we're constantly told that Alex was June's protector and that she always had a huge crush on him. Thus, I'm apparently supposed to buy that Alex has these great deep feelings for June. . . yeah okay.

HER RELUCTANT HUSBAND was definitely one of those rare cases where I desperately needed more flashbacks. Or better yet, this book should've started back when they were younger. This story could've easily had a part 1, 2, and 3. Part 1 could've introduced their childhood dynamics. Part 2 could've been the arranged marriage 5 years later, and part 3 could've been the grovel. But alas, instead we got Alex telling me how much he loves//has always loved June vs. actually showing me how much he loves her.

Also, side-note, if I were June I would've dropped this man so fast his damn head would've spun. He treats her like garbage, is just an ass towards her, and again, REFUSES TO HEAR HER SIDE OF THE STORY. What about him // his actions made her "rekindle her love" for him? Seriously, what? I've said before and I'll say it again -
    👏😤June👏😤deserved👏😤 better👏😤

✘ ᴛʜᴇ ᴡᴇɪʀᴅ ᴛᴏɴᴇ ✘

One of the other things that was a bit off about HER RELUCTANT HUSBAND was the tone. I'm not really sure if this was supposed to be a lighthearted forced-proximity-arranged-marriage or an angsty angst fest that had an extra dose of angst. The beginning was just. WOW. And then BOOM, it's five years later and Aunt Liz hijinks are ensuing. It was just a touch jarring and I wasn't sure how I was supposed to react.

In addition, there were a lot of dark themes centering around the Deacon storyline. So, the tonal shift between Deacon//June to Alex//June scrambled my brain a bit. It seemed like the author didn't want to commit to either so instead we were left in this unsatisfying middle ground. Also, it didn't help that all the Deacon stuff was pushed to the last 20% of the book.

✘ ᴛʜᴇ ʟᴀᴄᴋ ᴏғ ᴀ ɢʀᴏᴠᴇʟ ✘

This final point is maybe my biggest one. This story had such a great setup for one especially epic grovel. The ingredients were all there, seriously, they were right there on a sliver platter. Instead, somehow, HER RELUCTANT HUSBAND botched it so badly. First, let me just state, he doesn't fucking grovel. Instead, he stands in the rain for a couple of hours until she talks to him. It wasn't naming a cloud after the heroine bad, buuuut it was pretty darn close.

Yup, he stood in the rain for a bit annnnnd. . . that's about it. I'm sorry, but, come on. He should've gotten down on his hands and fucking knees and begged. AND THEN, he should've kept on begging for another thirty percent of the book. BuT nOpE, my mans says he's sorry like twice and that's it. I just. . . *sighs*
    👏😤June👏😤deserved👏😤better👏😤

Also, he had the gall, the absolute gall to be like, "welllll, you never came to me and told me the truth back then." I'm sorry, run that by me again? UMmmMMMMmmmMMm, how old was she? Are you seriously trying to say that it's inadvertently her fault for not spilling her guts to you before the accident? broooooooooo. If you were really her ride-or-die you would have taken her side and allowed her to explain no. 👏 matter. 👏 what. 👏

~✨ᴍʏ ғɪɴᴀʟ ᴛʜᴏᴜɢʜᴛs✨~

☁° All in all, I was decidedly. . . disappointed in HER RELUCTANT HUSBAND. I think the ingredients were there, but the final product was just. . . meh. I will say there were a few elements that I did enjoy, namely June. June really saved the book for me. I loved her character and while I do wish she would've kicked Alex to the curb, I am glad that she got her happily ever after. In addition, I think Aunt Liz was a fabulous character, and I'm very impressed that she made such an impact despite being recently departed.

☁° Where the book ultimately fell apart for me was the romance//Alex. I didn't like Alex, and thus, I didn't like the romance. I thought Alex's character could've been a lot better, and his "redemption//grovel" was decidedly unimpressive. In addition, the tone felt a bit off to me. In some parts of the book it was pretty dark, and then suddenly rom-com-ish hijinks were ensuing. Also, and I can't believe I'm saying this, I needed more flashbacks. I think they would've gone a long way in establishing June and Alex's soul-deep "connection." I kept being told they were soulmates, buuuut IMO it didn't translate well.

☁° All in all, I kindaaaa recommend this book. On the one hand, it was a fun way to spend an hour in the parking lot. . . however, don't go in expecting an epic grovel or an amazing childhood lovers-turned-enemies story. Although, a ton of people gave this book 5 stars, soooooooo, what the heck do I know?!

A friends to enemies to lovers while enemies to lovers romance.

As much as an author might be tempted to have an innocent h thrown every awful thing imaginable at her and be blamed for part of it, there does need to be a balance.
What we have here is a terrible bad guy who is in the wings for a lot of the book. Really awful guy. But he has managed to convince people that he is wonderful and the h isn’t.
The H is thoroughly convinced and treats the h appallingly. Until finally enough evidence suggests that he was wrong to believe the other character. This happened very late in the story...very late and all was forgiven.
Nope. As much as I love angst, it needs to be balanced with either redeemable characters or setting them adrift rather than forgiving and moving on for a HEA.

DNF @ 50%
This is one of my favorite tropes… resentful, angry H being forced to marry an h he HATES because he blames her for something she didn’t do…YUM.

Her Reluctant Husband starts with the catalyst that caused Alex to turn on June. The two had grown up together (both unknowingly loving the other) and had finally sealed the deal (had sex) only for everything to come crashing down when Alex believes the word of his friend and a crooked sheriff over June. Then there’s a 5-year time jump with the two reuniting.

The problem is that EVERYONE (the reader, h, aunt, attorney, family friend, etc.) except the H knows what really happened… Yet, NOONE clues the dude in… so we’ve been stuck in the same holding pattern for half the book.

Bottom Line- The bones of the plot were good, but it needed more to sustain it. For me, 50% of drama/conflict based upon one assumption/misunderstanding is too much. IMO, they should’ve jumped that hurdle, then added more conflict/drama with interference from the wannabe OW and evil best friend.

Safety- Up to the DNF…. They were never a couple, but had sex once before the fallout. During the separation, H was with others including her HS nemesis. She was sexually assaulted.

2 out of 5 stars!

A problematic book with a very darkly problematically made characters.

The characters in this book are really such a setback from the more modern and forward ones I usually love to read about. But still, I was compelled to finish this one because mainly I was waiting for a redemption. Plus, I was compelled by the dramatics.

There really are a handful of wrong things I found in this book, but if it weren't for these, the story couldn't really move forward.

Anyway, I still finished this for the fact I was holding out for a chance the book may redeem itself. It really did not. 2 stars.

What I love most about this author's work is that she can sure write a book that will hold your attention. They are absolutely never boring, and this is another complex, messy romance with the kind of story that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Was I always completely sold on it? No. There are some uncomfortable moments in here that got me a little shifty, but that's all part of the journey. It's a complicated ride from start to finish, with a storyline that's riddled with triggers, often difficult, yet is nuanced and fascinating. The author made a concerted effort to showcase the parallels between two very different relationships, and I loved how it depicts that old saying that "there are two sides to every story." It's a little rough around the edges, but well worth a read if you're looking for something original.

The story follows Alex and June, two people who were a huge part of each other's lives until five years ago. Alex is June's best friend's brother, and it was starting to look like they'd make the transition from friends to lovers... until Alex's sister died. Believing June to be responsible for the death of his sister, Alex cut her out of his life. But when an inheritance brings them together five years later, Alex and June are forced to work out their issues - by getting married. There's no love lost between them now; Alex hates June for what happened, and feels nothing but anger and resentment towards her. It's not an ideal situation for either one, and Alex has to finally acknowledge that he might not know the full story about what happened. And that June's side of the story might change everything.

I'll be clear right now: don't read this if consent is a trigger for you. The reader learns about June's history right away, and it's a difficult one. The problem - and major source of conflict - is that Alex doesn't know what June has gone through. That causes MAJOR tension between the two, and is the focal point of the story. Alex's anger is understandable to a certain extent, but it's also what brings on that uncomfortable feeling, especially with some of the physicality. I was hyperaware of it. The author has clear intent in certain scenes, showcasing the fine line between right and wrong. That's part of what makes this such a bingeable read, but a complicated one as well. There were definitely moments when I wasn't enjoying this, things I didn't like, and it wasn't until the second half that I was truly all in.... but I just couldn't stop reading, and was up late into the night. That's what earns this 5 stars more than anything; it's so unique that you have to see how it all plays out. I received an early copy and am voluntarily leaving a review of this twisty romance.

OMG, Erica has done it again. Loved this enemies to lovers/second chance romance. June and Alex’s relationship pulled at my heart strings and then proceeded to tear it into two and put it back together. Loved watching them find each other again. She has created characters and a story that will pull you in from page one and won’t let you go even after you are finished. This story was breathtaking and heartbreaking at the same time and I loved it and can’t wait to read more.

Oh my goodness! I’m truly at a loss for words with “Her reluctant Husband” I have been devouring Erica Marselas stories for quite some time now but for me this is my all time favourite of hers by far! This book kept me glued to my kindle and I just couldn’t put it down

“Her reluctant Husband” is not unicorns and rainbows it’s raw it’s gut wrenching and it’s extremely emotional it had my heart in my mouth the entire time whilst reading it and it does cover sensitive subjects but you know what? It was worth those tears i shed because this book is so beautifully written I can not begin to even tell you!

Alex was a lost soul he struggled with his grief when he lost someone he loved very much but he was also very angry and he couldn’t get past the hate he felt for the person responsible

June was a character of strength she has been through some very traumatic times that broke my heart but she fought through it June was beautiful on the inside just as she was on the outside and I’m in awe of character

June and Alex together made each other whole and I absolutely loved them

If you like enemies to lovers/ second chance romance then you absolutely MUST READ this phenomenal epic book by Erica Marselas I can’t recommend this book enough

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
FIVE STARS ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

AGONIZING & STEAMY ENEMIES TO LOVERS ROMANCE!

This was my first book by Erica Marselas and what a book to start with! My friend suggested it to me based on how much I love emotionally charged books and have no triggers.

Right off the bat I am sucked into June's memories...good memories, the kind that makes you smile to yourself! I love a story that grabs you immediately and can keep your attention the entire time.
The way that June's inner strength grows is probably my favorite part of this entire book. We can live everyday in fear of something and feel safety & comfort in the arms or presence of others. Sometimes all it takes is having those people to stand behind you, while you do the grunt work of building yourself back up. Having known people close to me that has suffered from physical abuse, I find it truly amazing when a broken woman can recognize the strength she possesses and use that strength to battle her demons.

I liked Alex but I loved June! I found that I loved Alex the most when he was committed to her. Not so much for the first part of the book. His stubbornness and my stubbornness clashed!...hahaha! But when this man goes to bat for his woman, his determination to save her and be there for her had me swooning!

If you have any triggers, pay close attention to the authors warning for this book.

If there were ever any indication that Erica Marselas should dabble in the darker love stories, My Reluctant Husband is the only proof you need. Hands down, this is my favorite book of hers to date. Angsty, emotionally gripping, and teeming with romantic turmoil and heartbreak, June and Alex’s story both wrecked and captivated me. Their story is painfully consuming, poignant in its tenacity.

Two almost childhood sweethearts are thrust together in an unexpected matrimonial arrangement after a mutual loss- only this marriage isn’t one that is comfortable or easy for either of them. Alex hates June for crimes she did not commit, and June has grown up enough to resent Alex’s easy dismissal of her many years ago, even though he was unaware of the full story. The set-up feels familiar enough, but where this story feels so different is in the backstory that ripped these two apart- and that backstory is dark, painful, and deeply traumatic. If you have triggers, beware- because June’s secrets and Alex’s misunderstanding of them are the central source of conflict in this messy arrangement between them- and those secrets aren’t easy to read about.

Our heroine June is such a beautiful soul. I felt for her so deeply- her solitude, her shame, her struggles. She’s such a wounded and vulnerable character, but her inner strength shines. I loved watching her refind her fire in her arrangement with Alex, as we watched her find herself and her purpose after years of getting lost in herself. Alex, on the other hand, took a minute to earn my affection, because as the reader we know how much he has misunderstood, and we resent how easily he let one version of the story skew his love. But, I did feel for him- I felt his own solitude, and we realize that the falsehoods he believes aren’t just his failure to love and trust, it’s his version of coping- his need for answers and explanations to a horrible loss that he can’t wrap his brain around. He does some emotional harm, he’s imperfect to the very end- but he does love June, and even though he makes us wait for it, he finds a way to mostly redeem his missteps and prove his love.

What I loved about June and Alex was just how imperfect they were- they say the wrong thing to each other, they make mistakes in how they handle their pain and their complicated connection, they allow themselves to succumb to their dominant emotional center (for June its retreating in fear and frustration, for Alex its anger and resentment). There are times when I’m furious at Alex for how he handles a situation- his inability to see or listen, his emotional stuntedness, his selfishness. But he’s human- and a human that can only see his version of the story, the story that helps him replace his loss with something less painful- anger and blame. His anger unsettles me at times given that it's aimed at June, even though I forgive him to a certain extent because he doesn’t know. And, while June is certainly far more empathetic given her trauma, she makes mistakes too- but she’s just doing the best she can to survive, to try to live again. The result is a deeply nuanced and volatile emotional chemistry between them- the love-hate is palpable, the tension real. The contrasts of sweet and tender with hostile and punishing keep the emotional tension high, and while their connection is undeniable, their love story is rocky at best- there is a LOT of baggage to uncover, and these two take the messy and circuitous path to get there, to find forgiveness and trust again. Which makes their ending all the more rewarding.

While I felt myself wanting these two to get on the same page sooner, Erica really makes us feel their romantic chaos until it erupts. While I was aghast at the darkness June experiences, I was also touched by the light and hope she eventually finds. Love can bloom even from the darkest of roots, and while Alex and June’s path to it is far from pretty, their bond never fully severs. And the twisting, emotionally turbulent path to repairing is a total page turner- gripping from start to finish!

Weight lifted and happiness given

This was my first book by this author and to say I was blown away would be an accurate description. This story gripped me, there were so many facets to How June processed her life and how the people around her reacted. Sometimes we are the thing that blocks ourselves from seeing the truth, and I think that's what was Alex's problem. A bond like they had was forged in childhood and they have always gravitated to each other. I love that Aunt Liz meddles even from the grave and caused these two to wake up. Enjoy getting to know this couple and what I really want to know is if they were successful at their next task handed to them!!

I like the cover but the heroine is a natural blonde with dyed red hair so that’s annoying AF.

I wanted to like this more. I’m sure it’s a me thing. This was lovely and angsty, but I’m not feeling very focused on my reads this week and I think I wasn’t able to give this it’s due.

No H/OW scenes or interaction in this book. H had recently been involved with the h’s nemesis because of that very reason. He does put OW in her place and they are not together once H/h reunite.

RATING: 4.5/5

Her Reluctant Husband is an enemies-to-lovers second chance romance that’s full of raw emotions and twists that will grab you and never let go. Not having read any other works by Erica Marselas before, I didn’t know what to expect before the book, needless to say I was impressed with the storyline and the characters. A definite must-read!

At the beginning of the book we are introduced to June Madison, who vowed to never to return to Kinder Falls, the town who labeled her a party girl and that let her down all those years go. Having been through a traumatic experience, June had to do a lot of healing away from the town that she once called home. But it’s a death of someone that was practically family to her that brings her back to the man that she thought she’d never see again. They grew up together and she idolized him until they crossed the line and became so much more. Yet, that all ended when someone they both held dear passed living them hurt and broken. He blamed her from the start and no matter how much she tried to explain to Alex what really happened, he refused to listen leaving her vulnerable when she needed him the most.

It would take a will reading to change their lives forever, in it they must be married for a year in order to save the place they once called home or it will be sold after that year. Neither one of them wants to lose the house so they give in, but the more time they spend together the closer they get and she soon realizes that she wants to give their relationship another go. It would take a turn of events to bring them back to their past, and they’ll have to learn to forgive if they truly want to move forward.

Alex Wilks’ main focus the past five years has been his job and the possible promotion that could come from it. After losing a family member all those years ago, he vowed to stay away from Kinder Falls, a place that brought so much pain to him. Not only did he lose that family member, but the girl that he once loved. It has been years since he has seen June and to see her back again brings him so many memories about what they once had. But the hate is stronger than anything else and he can’t forgive her for what happened no matter how much he tries. Having to have her as his wife was another shock, but they both don’t want to lose the house so he gives in as well. Neither of them expected to feel the same chemistry and fire in them that keeps pulling them together. Just as he was letting his walls down, he is confronted for all those years ago, to the night that changed his life and he is shocked when he finally finds out the truth. Now he has to face his past and convince June that they belong together before it’s too late.

I throughly enjoyed reading Her Reluctant Husband, the characters are relatable and full of depth. We see the characters go through ups and downs from the beginning to the very end of the story. It’s clear that they don’t want to be near each other when they see each other again, but they slowly let their walls down and we see just how much pain they are in. They have been through so much and they can’t face the past without hurting one another. Their banter keeps them on their toes and constantly keeps pulling them together. Their is steamy scenes and full of romantic ones too. The story does focus on heavy topics and there is a trigger warning at the beginning of the story. The author handles it very well and we do get a resolution at the end. The ending was sweet and I do wish we had another epilogue, but it still comes full circle and nicely concludes their story. I would highly recommend it!

Ok, I thought this was going to be your classic “enemies to lovers, with a marriage of convenience” but damn, this was so much more 🥺 this one packs a real punch to the heart. The hate to love is real, it’s a rollercoaster of emotions. You FEEL the hate and Erica worked her magic to make you believe in the love between Alex & June.

Sometimes I wanted to scream at both of them to just GET IT TOGETHER.... but they both had their own demons to slay and they did it. I loved that it was a path filled with intense passion, anger, steam, denial and love.

I loved this cover so much that I knew clicked the book. I'm glad I did because this was an unexpected surprise. There was considerable heartbreak in this story but there was also healing. It further reiterated the idea that there were two sides to every story.

There were a few things that were different about the book or that I wish had been done differently but I won't give spoilers. However, none of those things deterred me from getting lost in this story. June and Alex were a perfect pair.

I love second chance romances and thought this would be a good one.
I really liked the heroine and her strength of character. After I read her horrible history including years of violent abuse at the hands of a rich entitled rapist/murderer, it was hard to forgive Alex and his own self centered pain.
The big reveal came around the seventy five percent mark which was way too late to redeem Alex.
The fact that he reacted the way he did after actually getting back with June made me a bit sick. Believing her only after looking into the things she said only proved how much he still trusted others instead of her.
June forgiving him easily had me eye rolling.
In my opinion, and this is just that, my opinion: that wasn’t love, Alex was a bonehead, and June went through hell, survived, and deserved so much more.
Not romantic, and painfully heartbreaking.

Holy smokes this book will absolutely GUT you! Erica Marselas delivers a powerful story in the form of June and Alex and it is full of heartbreak and tragedy and I couldn't put it down. I experienced all of the feels and felt as if I was right there with the characters in the story. It was a little frustrating because I just wanted things to work out as soon as possible, but that does not always happen, and I am honestly glad that it didn't when I finished the book- it was done in the BEST possible way!

All in all this book was heartbreaking, beautiful, and full of misconceptions. When June is put in an impossible decision, she goes through it with grace and is a pretty freaking awesome person. Her Reluctant Husband is one that you need in your life ASAP, just prepared to ugly cry in certain parts, but don't worry there are also some super steamy moments too! I give it 4.5 outta 5 stars and HIGHLY recommend it!

PS: Thank you to Erica Marselas and Wildfire Marketing Solutions for allowing me an advanced copy of the book to read and review honestly.

If you are looking for loads of angst.
Enemies in the present day to lovers.
Marriage of convenience.
Huge trigger possibly for some with rape, abuse, no huge detail but it goes on for years between the heroine and the Hero's best friend.
Hero refuses to believe anything said about the heroine from anyone other that the horrible other man, aka his best friend.
I wanted to slap him.

He does grovel but for me he took too long to see the light.
But the heroine does really tell him and get things off her chest.

Only thing they are at a party and they were shouting etc but his boss doesn't catch on what's happening, bit indiscreet.
Other woman drama.
An ex still causing issues.

I’ll be honest when I first saw this book being promoted it was the cover that drew me in, I would say it is one of my favorite covers. For me the cover of the books says a lot about the contents of the book and I am so glad I saw it and chose to read it. This is the first book I have read from this author and safe to say I will be reading the rest of her library!

This book took me through a lot of emotions and there is a trigger warning for a reason it is important for an author to put those in the blurb so you know what you are about to read. With that being said I LOVED THIS BOOK! When I was about 30% in I told myself this book was going to crush me and make me feel every emotion and it did just that. There are parts of this book where I wanted to throw my device across the room and yell at Alex and June. Tell them they were both being stupid and to just suck it up. But the more I read it the more I fell in love with the characters. I also fell in love with the meddling neighbors and friends they were such great side characters. Some of them were not so great in the beginning but in the end redeemed themselves.

I love to get lost in a book and I did that with this one. I had to finish it and probably stayed up to late reading but in the end it was all worth it. I loved the steam, the longing, the romance, the fighting between the main characters, the side characters and just how this whole story came together. Congrats to the author and just so you know you earned another reader from this story because I will definitely be reading more of your work!

June had my heart breaking and tore me apart reading her life story😭 Right from the start, I knew her story is going to be an emotional roller coaster ride. I absolutely loved and devoured it.

People always had a misconception in June and that one night had cemented that misconception for Alex to hate her. He was always in love with her and he thought he finally had her. But everything was destroyed before it had started. Now five years later, June was thrown back into his life and this time, he had to marry the woman he loves to hate.

There are certain triggers that some might feel uncomfortable reading. But it works out in the end. June is like the strongest woman, her strength and will to fight her monster are admirable. And Alex just makes you want to smack him for being so blind, but he redeemed himself in the end.

This book had me in tears and with a lump in my throat from the very first chapter. June and Alex's story is heartbreakingly real and gutted me and slowly pieced me back together after reading their story. June more than anybody needed a new beginning and her journey wasn't easy. Alex is a hot headed alpha that is stubborn as all hell and is holding on to anger that won't let him move forward in his life. When an unexpected turn of events happens the last person he wanted to ever face again becomes his new beginning. This second chance romance had me devouring their story and I loved the unexpectedness with every page.

Her Reluctant Husband is a fabulous read. I went into this one totally blind. Never read the blurb and have never read anything by Erica Marselas before this. Since I love finding new authors I was excited to see a few of my favorite authors post about this one. Let me tell you I wasn't disappointed at all. I loved every moment of Her Reluctant Husband. June will take your heart from the start and just feed you these emotions that will just take your soul and then some. I love seeing June grow and heal from everything she went through. I loved seeing Alex finally see things in a new light. There is such fight between June and Alex that you just hope they will come out stronger together as a couple. Yes there may be some triggers for some in this one but with everything you are just pulled from the darkness to the light. I really could not get enough of this one and I cannot wait to read more by Erica Marselas.

This was definitely a tear jerker read for me. It had some dark elements that really made my heart clench for the heroine. I was on the edge of my seat as it progressed and I couldn't help but become so emotionally invested in these characters. It was as if their story was going on right in front of me, the author painted such a vivid picture that had me totally immersed.

Its angsty, tragic, heartbreaking, and insanely sexy. Despite the past, Alex and June still hold an undeniable connection. The sexual tension was palpable. There were some heartwarming and funny moments, especially with Liz. Their pain and struggle, I felt it so deeply that my chest was physically aching.

I can't recommend this read enough. The writing, the story, it's like a gorgeous sunset with its oranges and pinks. That feeling of elation and sadness, a bittersweet symphony. Truly unforgettable.

I don't know how but it's been back to back books of gut-wrenching, tear-your-soul-apart and then put it back together sort of time. This has triggers but the author does a good job of bringing the rawness of it into the story and make you not want to put it down. It's soul-crushing and emotional but also sweet, sexy, and passionate.

Another amazing book by this incredible author!

This book is about June and Alex. Five years ago, June and Alex had just made a move toward a relationship. But due to the demon that constantly follows June, this all burns to flames after the accident. The accident, that took away the life of Alex's sister; the accident, that Alex blames and hates June for. Five years later, after Alex's aunt and an important person in June's life; passes away, her property is left to both June and Alex. If Alex and June do not get married and try to fix their relationship, the property will be sold. Will they manage to accomplish such a task?

I loved this story, it holds great emotions! I am in awe of how brave and courageous June is, after all, that she has been through. I recommend this book a 1000%!!

New to me author and interesting story overall. I enjoyed the banter and interaction between the main characters and the suspenseful moments were good, I probably wanted to have a bit more development into that part , especially her recovery time but all good overall.

Alex and June had me in all my feelings. There was so much tragedy, due to the hands of nature, accident and abuse that my heart truly broke for them. I have cried at June recounting her abuse at the hands the town manipulator. This book will open your eyes to so many things, tHat could be happening under our nose if we actually open our eyes and not go by what someone says. I feel like this story can speak for so many things and it was beautifully written. I need more June and Alex, I want to hear about their next chapter in the life and watch the blossom into the couple that Liz knew they could be. And hopefully honor Kat even more in so many ways!

This was my first ARC from author, and also my first read from her.

She's knew to me, so I was excited because the blurb was right up my alley. I've always loved an good old enemies to lovers romance.

This had more angst than I've anticipated. But it's also sexy, swoon worthy and frustrating.

I'll definitely be looking forward to read more from her.

What an emotional journey! Alex and June’s story is so heartbreakingly beautiful. I couldn’t put this book down. It will hook you in from start to finish. June’s life was not easy by any means and the sect eats she holds lead her on a path of destruction. Years later she is ready to finally fight and not let anyone control her happiness. Alex hates June and is now forced to marry her per his aunt’s request. Alex has always loved June but has been living a blind life. What happens when all the skeletons appear? Alex and June a just beautiful together. Their chemistry is off the charts! The love is in their hearts. You can’t help but root for them. Have your tissues ready ladies because this book has all the feels!
