A Life Transformed

We begin our new sermon series with a look at Peter's life before he wrote 1 Peter. We read three stories that show us who Peter was and who he became after Jesus's death and resurrection. It shows us that Peter's was...

A Life Transformed

Peter was a man who...

  • Jumped out. In Matthew 14:28-32, Peter had the courage to jump out of the boat, not because he wasn't afraid, but because he was willing to go beyond his fear to pursue Jesus. Don't let fear keep you from pursuing Him. Jesus may let you sink, but He will never let you drown. Remember, it's better to try and fail in pursuit of Jesus than to stay safe while Jesus passes you by.
  • Spoke up. In Matthew 16:15-18, Peter may not have fully understood what he was saying, but he felt something in his spirit and had the courage to speak up. Be willing to listen and respond when God is leading you. It is better to speak imperfectly than to quench the Spirit's work through you.
  • Lifted up. When Jesus was arrested and put on trial, Peter denied knowing him because he was afraid. But after Jesus's resurrection, Peter confessed his failure and Jesus forgave him. In Acts 2:36-41, we see that grace and forgiveness allowed Peter to stand in front of thousands and tell them about salvation. Many souls were saved that day. Don't let the fear of rejection stop you from telling someone about Jesus. Romans 10:14 tells us that people can't believe in Jesus unless they hear about him. It is better to lift up the name of Jesus and be rejected than to remain silent and let people go to hell.

Fail Forward

Peter was an imperfect man. He had many failures, but he repented and allowed his failures to push him closer to God. Failure does not mean God rejects us. If we fail because we've sinned, we must confess it and allow God's forgiveness and grace to pull us closer to Him.  Peter went from putting his foot in his mouth to proclaiming the Good News. The greatest victory in your life may be on the other side of failure.

Take a chance and follow Jesus. Make Him your greatest priority. Listen and follow and let God use you for His Kingdom. Point people to Jesus; share your story and invite them to join you at church. Learn from Peter’s transformation and watch God do something great with your response.
