This workshop will take a system mapping approach to explore influences on representativeness of government images, focusing especially but not exclusively on CC Search and the sources that feed it. Representativeness here is used mostly in a partisan or ideological sense rather than a demographic sense, although there may be some overlap. We will look at factors such as search engine optimization (SEO), platform policies, and reporting mechanisms. To start the conversation, we will look at examples of bias in searches for political and government topics as well as the presence of explicitly partisan or ideological images in searches for unrelated topics.
