Contacted Michael by email and gave him a list of places I was interested to see - asking him to let me know what was possible in a day's time.
He was very prompt with communication and my personalized tour was set. He picked me up in my Dublin City Center hotel and dropped me at the hotel near the airport that was the starting point for my group tour.
Michael was born and raised in this area and thus has an intimate connection to the land and the special sites in the area - very knowledgeable and informative. Since he is so familiar with the area, he planned out the day to maximize the number of places I could visit. It was fun to see how many people he knew at the various places we visited. He even took me to his house where I met his wife, an amazing textile artist, and had the opportunity to walk their private labyrinth and have a cup of tea. He also had tickets to visit a site that is not normally open to the public which was a special treat.
My favorite sites were Fourknocks and Dowth. I had both of those places completely to myself.
By the end of the day, I was very tired but very happy!
We had requested a visit to Monasterboice, and along the way Michael also took us to Mellifont Abbey which was also incredibly impressive. I had thought we wouldn't have had time but it fit seamlessly into our day, as did the drive through the site of the Battle of the Boyne which Michael explained in detail. To cap off the fantastic day, we visited the Hill of Tara on the way back to Dublin where he described all of the features and the archaeological finds. Throughout the day there were additional sights here and there that he would point out.
He has a very easygoing manner and as a Boyne Valley native you can tell how much he enjoys sharing his home and the thousands of years of history found there.
As for the booking process, it was very easy through his website and Michael was an excellent communicator. He also knew all of the staff at the various sights and we were able to walk in with no issue. This was a top-notch private tour and I highly recommend to anyone wanting to visit this part of Ireland.
On top of just visiting excellent spots, Michael just made it even better. Instead of being on a bus with 50 other people and having a time limit to see everything and return to the bus, we were able to see everything on our own time with Michael as our guide. He was very knowledgeable about everything we saw and wasn't afraid to correct the record on some "historical" facts that are usually presented. We were with Michael on our 3rd day in Ireland and were talking about how much fun that day was the rest of the trip.
He is the face of the Newgrange and Meath area so much so that if you google Newgrange he comes up before the official museum website. This just shows you how much he knows about the places and the effort he puts into the tours.
When I go back to Ireland I will definitely do another tour he offers. I also recommend him to anyone. The price is well worth it if you want to have a laid-back tour with a ton of historic value. Beats a bus tour any day.
