Startups and most SMEs aren’t being required (yet) to report on their sustainability strategies. But at Trafi, we wanted to get a head start on the process and achieve carbon neutrality ASAP - with or without government mandates. It’s just a first step for us, but I’m not surprised that only a handful of companies are trying to navigate carbon neutrality now. Here’s why: 🗂 No guidance - playbooks for SMEs, especially digital companies, are still pretty vague. A lot of them are little more than recommendations, making it hard to set meaningful priorities. 🔦 No Scope 3 data - If data is the gold of our century, finding good data on Scope 3 emissions is like mining in a tunnel without a flashlight.   💿 Digital data - for tech companies, energy and data operations are the biggest contributors to their carbon footprint. However, there’s no real guidance on how to find that data (especially if your suppliers are AWS or Google)   🎯 Reduction goals - after the assessment, setting a meaningful reduction plan is almost impossible. SBTs do have a recommendation for startups (SMEs), but it’s not applicable to Scope 3 emissions. What if Scope 3 is 95% of your footprint?  🤹♂️ Lack of examples - spotting real action in a sea of greenwashing is not easy. Besides investing into removals and offsets, we’re doing our part with social initiatives and by looking into digital sustainability.
