  • Suicide bomber who killed 30: “Self-sacrificing” “Martyrdom-seeker”

Murderers of the past continue to be hailed as “heroes” in today’s Palestinian Authority.

One of the most lethal terror attacks in Israel's history was when Palestinian terrorist Abd Al-Basset Odeh carried out a suicide bombing at a Passover dinner at the Park Hotel in Netanya on March 27, 2002. 30 Israeli civilians were murdered and 140 were wounded.

This attack, which happened at the height of the 5-year PA terror campaign – the second Intifada – is still being celebrated today in the PA as a landmark event, undertaken by a true “hero.” Still today, almost 20 years later, while praising the terrorists of the Jenin refugee camp who “wrote a heroic epic in blood” during the PA terror campaign, the official PA daily also singled out for praise suicide bomber Odeh from Tulkarem in the West Bank:

Each year in April the blood of the Martyrs sprouts flowers. All the words are silenced, but not the memories of the refugee camp whose residents wrote a heroic epic in blood… The location: The Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank. The time: The beginning of April 2002.  The heroes of the story are hundreds of resistance members and all the residents of the refugee camp who stand firm… They tell the story of the blood that flowed in the alleys of the camp, which wrote an epic of resolve. Despite the siege, it achieved a great victory… After Martyrdom-seeker Abd Al-Basset Odeh (i.e., suicide bomber, murdered 30) from Tulkarem in the northwest of the occupied West Bank carried out a self-sacrificing operation (i.e., suicide bombing) on March 27, 2002, in which 30 Israelis were killed at the Park Hotel in occupied Umm Khaled – which the occupation changed its name to ‘Netanya.’”

Similarly Abbas’ Fatah Movement recently celebrated another lethal terror attack, which took place decades before the Park Hotel bombing. On June 25, 1974, three Palestinian terrorists broke into an apartment building in Nahariya, where they murdered 30-year-old Irena Zarankin, her 10-year-old daughter Ronit, and her 5-year-old son Gilad. Zarankin’s husband Mordechai had made a rope out of sheets for them to escape out the window and blockaded the door, but one of the terrorists was waiting below and shot Irena and the children as they climbed down; Mordechai survived the attack.

Israeli soldiers who arrived at the scene killed all three terrorists, but in the exchange of fire 21-year-old Israeli soldier Danny Senesh was also murdered. At the time Fatah claimed responsibility for the attack, and still today it marks the anniversary of the attack, praising the murderers as “the heroes of the Nahariya operation”:

Narrator: “They had their say: “We will attack and we will not be attacked”
The heroes of the Nahariya operation (i.e., terrorists, murdered 4):
Self-sacrificing fighter Abd Al-Rahim Muhammad Nasif
Self-sacrificing fighter Ahmad Muhammad Abd Al-‘Al
Self-sacrificing fighter Muhammad Abd Al-Hamid Hanafi
The group infiltrated the settlement of Nahariya (i.e., Israeli city) by sea
The operation took place on the night of June 25, 1974
and continued seven hours
The operation surprised the enemy commanders
During the operation dozens of [Israeli] soldiers were killed and wounded as recognized by the occupation (sic.), and the three self-sacrificing fighters were killed”

It should be stressed that Netanya which the PA daily called "occupied" and Nahariya which was called a settlement” are Israeli coastal cities nowhere near the West Bank.  The PA/Fatah routinely refer to all to Israel as an “occupation” and all Israeli cities as “settlements” as an expression of denying Israel's right to exist.

The following is a longer excerpt of the report praising the Park Hotel suicide bomber and Jenin terrorists:

Headline: “The Jenin refugee camp – a story of resolve and a wound that does not scab”

Each year in April the blood of the Martyrs sprouts flowers. All the words are silenced, but not the memories of the refugee camp whose residents wrote a heroic epic in blood. All the fortresses collapse in April, while the Jenin refugee camp continues to stand proudly thanks to its men, women, children, and elderly…

The location: The Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank. The time: The beginning of April 2002 (refers to Jenin battle in which terrorists attacked Israeli soldiers during a counter-terror operation; see note below -Ed.). The heroes of the story are hundreds of resistance members and all the residents of the refugee camp who stand firm. Year after year, memories of the resolve continue to be a story that passes from generation to generation, and the young people remember it by heart even better than the adults. They tell the story of the blood that flowed in the alleys of the camp, which wrote an epic of resolve. Despite the siege, it achieved a great victory through unity on the battlefield between the Palestinian resistance factions, on a small territory no more than a square kilometer in size…

After Martyrdom-seeker Abd Al-Basset Odeh (i.e., suicide bomber, murdered 30) from Tulkarem in the northwest of the occupied West Bank carried out a self-sacrificing operation (i.e., suicide bombing) on March 27, 2002, in which 30 Israelis were killed at the Park Hotel in occupied Umm Khaled – which the occupation changed its name to ‘Netanya’ (the lands of Netanya were purchased in 1928 -Ed.) – then Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon gave a green light to launch a military operation to strike the Palestinian cities. He called it ‘Operation Defensive Shield,’ and the main goal of the operation was to eliminate the second Palestinian Intifada, which broke out in 2000 (i.e., PA terror campaign 2000-2005, more than 1,100 Israelis murdered)…

A UN report revealed that the Israeli occupation soldiers committed a despicable massacre when they executed approximately 58 Palestinians and wounded hundreds to different degrees (sic., the UN report refuted PA claims of a massacre, confirming the majority of Palestinian casualties were terrorists)…

Regarding the Israeli side, it admitted that 23 of its soldiers were killed, although the resistance members emphasize that the number is much larger and is estimated at 55.”

[Official PA daily Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, April 5, 2021]

Jenin – refugee camp north of Nablus that was a major hotbed of terrorism in the PA terror campaign 2000-2005 (the second Intifada). To reduce the attacks, Israeli forces entered Jenin on April 3, 2002, to conduct searches as part of Operation Defensive Shield, which was carried out to destroy the terror infrastructure in the West Bank, and several days of intense fighting against Palestinian terrorists in booby-trapped houses ensued. While the PA claimed that the Israeli forces committed a “massacre” and killed hundreds of civilians, a UN report refuted these claims, confirming that 52 Palestinians were killed in the battle of which the majority were terrorists. 23 Israeli soldiers were also killed in the fighting.

Park Hotel suicide bombing - Palestinian terrorist Abd Al-Basset Odeh carried out a suicide bombing at a Passover dinner at the Park Hotel in Netanya on March 27, 2002. 30 Israeli civilians were murdered and 140 were wounded.

1974 Nahariya attack – Three Palestinian terrorists - Abd Al-Rahim Nasif, Ahmad Abd Al-'Al, and Muhammad Hanafi - who had reached Israel by boat from Lebanon broke into an apartment building in Nahariya, where they murdered 30-year-old Irena Zarankin, her 10-year-old daughter Ronit, and her 5-year-old son Gilad on June 25, 1974. Zarankin’s husband Mordechai had made a rope out of sheets for them to escape out the window and blockaded the door, but one of the terrorists was waiting below and shot Irena Zarankin and the children as they climbed down. Mordechai Zarankin survived the attack. Israeli soldiers who arrived at the scene killed all three terrorists, but in the exchange of fire 21-year-old Israeli soldier Danny Senesh was also murdered. Fatah claimed responsibility for the attack.
