Suffer in Silence

Rate this book
From USA Today bestselling author Kelsey Clayton comes a dark mafia romance filled with pain, betrayal, devastation, and revenge.

Monsters don’t hide in dark alleys.

They lurk in plain sight, clawing into your soul with cordial smiles.

They wear Armani, they drive Cadillacs, they attend fundraising balls...

And they rule the city with a merciless fist.

The Familia is a mystery to most,

and sitting on its throne is Kage Malvagio.

Vile.

Sadistic.

Painstakingly beautiful.

Some say: Ask for forgiveness, never permission.

Kage asks for neither.

Especially when he gets his hands on me.

I should hate him.

I should run at the first chance I get.

But how could the devil be so bad when he looks at me like that?

Suffer in Silence is book one of the Malvagio Mafia Duet and ends on a cliffhanger. This dark romance deals with topics that may be triggering to some readers. It is not for the faint of heart. Read at your own risk.

Excellent mafia romance. Dark and delicious.

Kage is a force to be reckoned with. With the threat of part of his empire as the don of La Famiglia looms he does the only thing he can and kidnaps his enemy’s daughter, Saxon. But that doesn’t go as well as he planned either.

Several triggers including excessive violence and knife and gun play. Kage is a beast and I loved it. Ended on a cliffhanger so I am on to book 2.

MY REVIEW AND OTHERS: can also be found on my blog:
➽ KITTY KATS CRAZY ABOUT BOOKS

Saxon Forbes is a pre-med student attending Columbia University, she's never wanted for anything having parents that are millionaires and a Grandfather, Silas Kingston is by far one of the most powerful men who owns a huge chunk of New York City.

Warnings from her bestie when it came to Kage went unheeded, she couldn't help but be gravitated towards him even in a crowded night club, he stood out, even when she could feel the darkness within him, it ceased to unnerve her. It just intrigued her that much more.

When Saxon's much loved grandfather dies is when her world implodes and all that she knew changed within a blink of an eye and true darkness in the name of Kage came knocking at her door.

How-to-find-inspiration-Tender-Collage-Instagram-Post-1

Kage is a cold heartless killer, he's completely and utterly emotionless but with Saxon she sparks something in him, together these two set the pages combusting and ignited my anticipation levels as I dreaded the ending picking that the author would throw me over a cliffy and as predicted that's exactly what happened. I can't wait to dive back into this world..

I've loved this authors previous books but by far this one is one of her best!! This was the perfect blend of everything I look within my books, heat, dark, romance, angst, this had it all and the fact that this is the first time this author has dipped her toes in the mafia genre is mind blowing because this was #AMAZING...To say this was inhaled was an understatement..

If you've not read this author before, this book is the right place to start, it's a wee it dark, and may be a wee bit triggery for some, but for others its a walk in the park, this books is perfectly balanced within the mafia world, it's not too embellished with blood and gore, just enough to wet the appetite for us dark wee souls.

Kage Malvagio will have you swooning and basking in his darkness, in the very beginning I wasn't sure about Saxon but delve deeper into the book and she will surprise you, I should know by now how this author rolls with her heroines, they are never weak, they roll with the punches and will go up against any man and Saxon is no pushover.

Suffer in Silence is book 1 in the Malvagio Mafia Duet. It’s a dark romance with all the elements I crave in a mafia story: twists, suspense, action, and grit combined with a dose of angst and plenty of heat along with a diverse and interesting cast of characters. But what. a. cliffhanger. we’re left on.

Saxon Forbes is the eldest daughter of her family, a pre-med student and all-around good girl who just wants a family dinner for her 21st birthday. When her bestie, Nessa, convinces her to hit up Pulse, she locks eyes with Kage Malvagio and is instantly entranced. While she’s clueless as to who he is and what he does, as the granddaughter of Silas Kingston, she’s been on Kage’s radar for years.

When her beloved grandfather passes away, Saxon is unwittingly caught in the crossfire of a mafia/bratva war. Worse yet is how she ended up in this position.

What ensues is the story of Kage’s pursuit of revenge and the unexpected feelings for Saxon, who proves to hold her own against the broody, emotionless Don.

This fast-paced tale will draw you in from the very beginning and leave you breathless by the last page. I need answers and couldn’t wait to dive into Symphony.

3 🖤💘🤔s

Part 1

I read it, but I had a few issues...
Although it had good mafia elements, the development had plenty of holes.
Regarding the characters, the plot, the emotional aspect.

Everything was rolling too fast. The heroine’s personality changed rapidly. She told the hero she loved him too soon and to me it looked so invalid!
When she found out the background and actions of her family, her reaction astonished me because she didn’t react as a normal person would!
The story had suspense, action, twists and turns.
The cover and the title were fantastic (of both parts)!

This book is FUBAR - fucked up beyond all repair.

The writing and character voices sound extremely elementary.

Fluffy. Verbose dribble. Nothingness. Here’s what I mean:

I look out to see we’re parked in front of my building. Pulling more than enough money out of my wallet, I hand it to him. “Thank you.” “Have a good one, ma’am.” “You, too.” With my books securely in my arms, I get out of the cab and head inside. The doorman, Levi, opens the door for me with a smile—the same way he has since I was younger. “Miss Forbes,” he greets me. “How are you today?” “Tired. And you?” He radiates a comforting warmth. “I’m just fine. Do you need help carrying those books up?” I shake my head. “I think I’ve got it. Thanks, Levi.” “It’s my pleasure.” As the elevator opens to our penthouse, I can already hear my mom’s sniffles echoing from the kitchen. My heart hurts for her. The pain of knowing I’m going to be losing my grandfather is hard, so I can’t even imagine if it were my dad. And yet, she’s trying so hard to stay strong for Kylie and me. I place my books and my purse on the coffee table and then go find my mom. As expected, she’s sitting on a barstool at the island—her

^ Do authors not understand that such over-telling of every little move kills the storyline’s pacing? Why the fuck would I care about her cab, her door man, whether she had her books as she exits a car, that she puts said books and a purse down, that mom is sitting on a barstool at the island… etc etc etc etc etc?!? I don’t.

Here’s why no one GAF…

Take the books as an example. They’re mentioned TWICE within the span of a page. Are the books central to the storyline? Are the books going to somehow develop this character? Do they set the stage for the scene? Does anything about the books move ANYTHING forward within the book? No. So, the mention of books once is word clutter - fluff - pointless - useless. Mentioning it twice just becomes a gigantic red flag that the author is flopping around because she’s either unable to tell her story or has no story to tell. I’m going with all of the above~

And, it just goes on an on with nothingness….

Putting my phone away, I take a deep breath and head into the hospital. The security guard checks my license and prints me out a visitor's pass before telling me where to go. I thank him and follow his directions since Nessa was the one who guided me to his room last night. The elevator feels like it takes forever to get to the sixth floor, stopping at both the third and fifth to let off other visitors. On the fifth, I notice the labor and delivery ward. People being born on one floor, and others dying on the floor above it. Circle of life. It’s a morbid thought, and one that a therapist would probably want to dig deep into. But that’s the beauty of thinking things. As long as you don’t say them out loud, it’s your little secret. Making my way down the hallway, the sound of someone sobbing grabs my attention. I turn to the left to see a young woman crying, her head resting on a patient’s bed. The man lying in front of her can’t be much older than she is. He has a tube down his throat, the ventilator breathing for him. He looks completely lifeless, other than the forced rise and fall of his chest. A nurse murmurs a quiet apology before stepping outside the room. She smiles kindly at me, but it doesn’t reach her eyes. How could it, when you just had to give someone the worst news of their life? Not wanting to be rude, I continue to make my way toward my grandfather’s room, but my mind is still with the woman back there. What happened? Is he going to make it? Who am I kidding? Of course, he isn’t. And if he is, it’ll be as a vegetable and not as the man she fell in love with in the first place. Regardless of what happens from here, she has lost the love of her life, and that’s heartbreaking to me.

^ That would be two pages of irrelevant, useless, uninteresting fluff squashed between tiny scraps of anything remotely relevant to the storyline.

The multiple FMC nicknames… Saxon, Sax, Saxi, wildflower. Yeah, that’s irritating, too.

I’m at 10%, and nothing has happened. It’s her birthday. She has a BFF. She has a frat boy, fuckboy fanboy she’s not interested in, who the MMC kills because he was trying to spike her drink. < That’s just told to you, not even shown. Her gramps is dying, and he owns half of NY. Some *strange* hottie (MMC) almost bumps into her in the hospital and eyefucks her from afar at a club. No interaction…. Yet, it makes her feel: “But I don’t think I’ve ever felt more protected and safe.” WTF? His stare made her feel the safest she’s ever been … wtf ever.

Lazy….

“Where’s Dad? Shouldn’t he be helping you with all of this?” “Oh, honey,” she says with a sigh. “You know how your father is.” But that’s the thing. I don’t. Not the way she does, at least. Ever since I was little, I’ve always been treated like his little princess. He’s always put me first. Done anything I wanted. And until now, I thought he was the same way with Mom. I guess I never looked close enough to realize I was wrong.

^^ So, the FMC decides she doesn’t really know her dad simply because she walks into her parent’s home and her dad isn’t there at that exact moment helping to plan a funeral for someone who isn’t dead yet? 1) That doesn’t even make sense. 2) The reader can see the insert of daddy issues/bad guy out of nowhere, character vilification a mile away.

FFS

“It Happens On A Friday.”

“BY THE TIME THE helicopter lands at my house, a large, castle-like structure in the Hamptons,…”

^ Wtf is with all the weird capitalization shit? 🧐

^ The mobster refers to his house as a “castle-like structure” 🙄🤣😂

Bottom LINE

“Suffer in Silence” is an apt title. The reader suffers through miles of fluff and BS in place of a storyline that’s completely silent - MIA, DOA, FUBAR. If I’m bored to death and annoyed beyond belief by 10-15%, there’s no way I’m going to finish this one, much less this as a duo.

The good girl embraces bad when the monster becomes the man she cannot live without. Saxon is a force and Kage has met his match!

Raised within the mafia, which she was oblivious to, Saxon is about to be blind-sided. Once her grandfather passes, she finds out the truth. Unfortunately the truth is revealed only when she’s used as a pawn to obtain control.

Kage is ruthless. His position within the Familia demands it. He never wanted to hurt her. He stayed away until he had no choice. Using her as leverage was supposed to be simple. However, he didn’t count on the beautiful, little spitfire being his perfect match.

A drama-filled mafia romance with twists and suspense that will leave you reeling. Kage and Saxon were fire! Secondary characters you either loved or loved to hate. And a jaw-dropping ending that left me wishing for more pages. You’ll get invested in the romance and the plot for revenge. It’s going to get messy.

OUT NOW!!

"My world isn't one she belongs in, and I won't be responsible for ruining her."

I have read most of Kelsey's stories and I adore the way she is writing them... but for the first time, Kelsey walked into the dark side and I have to admit that it suits her so much!!!!
It's a common knowledge by now that mafia romance is one of my favorite tropes... The darker, the better and when I found out what Kelsey's next project was, I was over the moon with anticipation...
In here, Kelsey proved me that she can walk in the dark side and create a very beautiful, intense and full of antsy moments, story...
Honestly, I can not wait for the next part, especially after that cliffy!!!!

"Are you always so kind to the monsters in your life?"
"Having demons doesn't make you a monster."
"You don't know what you're saying."
"Maybe not. Or maybe you've never considered that dark can be beautiful."

Saxon's world turned upside down from the moment she lost her grandfather and a friend of hers is go missing....
Until now, she was living ignorant her college and priviledged life, but when she is taken away, everything she knew is about to change once and for all!!!
It doesn't help the fact that she is drown to her captor, a ruthless and emotionless man who can destroy her with the simple snap of his fingers...
Still... She is determined to fight him in every turn and that's not always a good thing...

"He makes me feel dead and alive all at the same time. Like I want to fight him with everything I have and obey his every world."

Kage is the head of the famiglia...
When an important member is dying and someone is trying to steal from him, he is forced to follow a plan that he never wanted to follow...
He has to put the temptation under his roof, even though he had sworn to never drug her into his sinister and bloody world...
And as Saxon is fighting him on every turn, she is getting under her skin inch by freaking inch...
Will he stay strong and untouched by her presence or will he bow to the temptation, consequences be damned???

"I try to look away. I try to focus on anything else. But she's fucking magnetic. A tempress whose sole intention is to drive me over the edge."

I loved this story... I loved Kage and Saxon...
When these two were in the same room, the temperature was rising dangerously high...
I loved that Saxon never gave up fighting, even though her heart was beating wild when she was close to Kage...
I loved how Kage's walls were tumbling down while Saxon was challenging him in every turn...
These two couldn't be more perfect for each other and I need to learn everything about their story...
Can not wait to read the second part of this amazing story!!!
Well done, Kelsey Clayton!!! I'm officially addicted to this world!!!

"I can't have you... But I can't not fucking have you."
"I don't think you're the kind of man who follows the rules."

***4.5/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫***

This book is my very first mafia book of the year and it was everything that you expect a typical mafia romance to have- some suspense, action, complicated feelings, chemistry, tension and funny banters. The Malvagio world completely had me engrossed and Kage had that "alpha" energy which made everyone afraid of him, everyone but Saxon.
Saxon made some pretty impulsive decisions that lead her into some real deep shit but I can't say that they were completely stupid because it ultimately brought her closer to Kage. Her character development was real good though. I totally loved the dynamic she shared with Kage. From initially being scared of him to cracking jokes with him, their (somewhat) enemies to lovers story was adorable! And not to mention, Kage was equally obsessed with her and that made me enjoy seeing him fight his feelings lol!
Since this is a duet and Suffer in Silence is the first part, it was short and you can probably finish it in a couple of hours but it sure as hell was entertaining and that cliffhanger has left me so eager to see what happens in the next part!

Holy hell! I just finished this book and I don’t know what my feelings are doing right now. I can tell you with certainty that my heart was owned completely by Kage Malvaggio and Saxon Forbes! THIS BOOK IS EVERYTHING!! Like straight up unputdownable!

I’m late, so I don’t to belabor this review. I’ll hit the highlights and tell you what I loved:
Two super strong willed characters who are willing to fight, scratch, and claw for what they want. Saxon is fierce! She’s one of the best heroines I’ve read. After everything she’s been through her strength of will is utterly remarkable! She never backs down from a fight and fits Kage perfectly.
This is a mafia book, so our hero is as murderous as they come and my psycho loving behind was here for every single slaughter! Gah, I might need to get emotional help because I SUPER LOVE him.
The storyline is effortlessly entertaining and this baby was hawt!
There’s a cliffy, so be prepared to end this one gasping for breath and praying for the next installment.

What a stellar experience! Gah I loved every single second of this thrilling dark romance. Guess I’ll go sit in the corner now and count down the days for the next book, CAUSE I NEED IT!

Just wow!

Story: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Trope: captive
Angst: 😱😱😱
Smexy: 🔥🔥🔥

Completely blown away! You'd never know this was Kelsey's first mafia romance. I loved how the book started out not quite light hearted, but with the vibe of a regular college romance, but quickly turns dark, violent, and gritty as Saxon gets yanked into the violent life her grandfather tried so hard to keep her separate from. Super fast paced with characters that suck you in and villains you'll love to hate. The cliffhanger is to die for and has me no so patiently waiting for the conclusion!!

Suffer In Silence is the first book in the Map ship Mafia duet by Kelsey Clayton and cannot be read as a standalone. It is written in first person, from dual perspective.

What I liked: the mafia violence & war plot, Kage’s vendetta against the Russians

What I didn’t like: the romance… Saxon and Kage didn’t really have enough interaction prior to them fucking for her fall in love so quickly, even for someone with Stockholm Syndrome lol

“I’ve spent years dreaming of this woman, repeatedly convincing myself that I’m no good for her. That she’s too good for my world. And now she’s in it anyway”

Kage and Saxon.
I randomly came up on the authors IG reel about this book and instantly downloaded it. I ended up reading the entire duet and downloaded the bonus scenes in ONE damn day. Even though I had two ARCs due in 48 hours. I couldn’t stop. The writing was phenomenal. It flowed, it kept me on my toes, my heart beating. I literally couldn’t stop reading all throughout the night. I got four kids! 😂
If I sacrifice my sleep for a book, please note, that means the book was that amazing! 5⭐️

Kage is the head of the Italian mob. He wants something that Saxons father inherited when his FIL passed away.
In order to get that, Kage kidnaps his daughter… Saxon.
But things get crazy pretty quickly when he realizes Saxon is a fighter. And the dad… doesn’t care….

This duet honestly had SO many twists. It’s just… so good. I need these in paperback.

Meet Saxon She’s 21 , gorgeous, pre med , and has millionaire parents. Immediately you think oh another spoiled princess who loves to party but no Saxon is just something else she is kind , caring , the type of girl who enjoys a book compared to a night of shots , she’s extremely curious , and above all she’s a spit fire. She’s the granddaughter of Silas, his silent mafia partner who holds the documents to all of the mafia properties and businesses in his name and as the legit front man. Now he’s dying and Kage is running out of time to change the documents and last will signatures otherwise, the properties will go to Scarlett, Silas’ daughter and Saxon’s mom. The problem is that Scarlett is married to Dalton, a conniving and power-hungry man who is willing to partner with the Russian Bratva in order to get the power he craves. Kage needs to stop the process stat thus, kidnapping Saxon as leverage was the plan.

Kage
Kage is dark , cruel , violent , older , and loyalty to him is not earned it’s expected. Those that cross Kage will meet death. Kage is the kind of guy Saxon should be afraid of.

One moment of discreet bring Saxon smack dab into Kages grip. Kage thinks Saxon is some docile little girl but Saxon shows him just how much she can truly take before she cracks.
The line between hate and love between these to is thin all it takes is one touch for it to snap and what’s to follow is an absolute page turner steam , passion , jealousy, and all out war of emotions.

Never has the saying “Keep Calm and Carry On” been more true especially after coming down from the high of a book. ‘Suffer in Silence’ was exactly the high I was chasing…a dark, all consuming Mafia book, one that captivated me from beginning to end.
The book had all my must haves when it comes to mafia reads, a ruthless alpha-hero that will having you questioning your own sanity with his wicked ways, spitfire of a heroine, explosive moments between both MCs that will have you on edge, and a storyline that will have you eating up the pages.
The day came and went I was still glued to my kindle. Only to be left with the worst downfall imaginable…the book ends in a cliffy. The author worked her magic and finished with an explosive cliffhanger. Book 2, Screams in Symphony releases later this month, and I personally can’t wait for Kage Malvagio to paint the town red with revenge.

"Saxon isn’t going anywhere,” he tells her with his eyes still locked on mine, then turns to glare at her. “She’s here to stay, so either learn to live with that, or get the fuck out. Preferably the latter, if we’re all being honest here.”

Suffer in SIlence was so good!
While I would say, the romance plotline wasn't the best, the mafia action plotline was fire!
I love the journey we follow on betrayal, violence, action and pow-wow! It was incredibly written and non-stop fire!

The plotline was easy to read, went straight to the point and was a fast pace build-up.
However, I feel like the romance plotline lacked foundation.
The romance felt like it started of nowhere. I wish they had the history of something they had in the past, even if they didn't technically meet one another. I wish they were told more, at least from Kage's POV.
I feel like the romance was solely focused on the sexual tension they had; however, I didn't get their chemistry or there wasn't even a plot of each POV of their feelings and emotions towards the other.

What was shocking was how dark this book was.
Trigger warning: Rape, suicide, violence, blood, gore, miscarriage.
There were dark scenes and trigger issues, and it wasn't diving deep into the storyline; however, I wish it was more focused.
While it was a dark mafia romance, we get a good chunk of humour. Dark ones and funny ones.

"No one is laying a fucking finger on her,” I sneer. “Not a goddamn person. So, take your opinions and all your ideas and shove them up your ass, because I’m not fucking interested. She’s. Off. Limits.”

Oh my! Suffer in Silence met and exceeded all my expectations even though they were already sky high due to its writer, Kelsey Clayton! It had everything I wished in a mafia book. Captivity, forced proximity, enemies to lovers, brooding and vicious hero/villain with a soft spot only for his one and only obsession, lots of secrets and backstabbing, lots and lots of hawt schmex and of course a fiery heroine who is as smart and savvy as she is beautiful. I mean I loved everything about the book and its ingenious multi-layered plot and its construction. The only complaint I have is the brutal cliffhanger that just shook me to my core but since the next book is coming out this month, I will handle it gracefully (not).

Dark romance, mafia style. Me likey.

So, you know how in most dark romances, the heroine is weak in every way to the antihero? Well, Saxon, is not that. She has a mind of her own. Is it weird to say I like the way she processes things? For example, she asks him why, and he tells her. Then she comes to the conclusion that it is a logical reason and supports him. No more questions or punishment.

I also happen to like my book boyfriends to be murderous, twisted, dominant, and dark! 😋

Book 2, here I come!
