The Bad Wedding Date

Rate this book
Having to attend my sister’s wedding with a pretend boyfriend was bad enough, but when that fake date left me stranded an hour before the ceremony, I thought my life was over. No one wore disappointment as poorly as my mother, and I’d already given her a thousand reasons to wish I’d never been born.

Which is why, when a random stranger sat beside me at the bus stop, wearing a crisp suit and a winning smile as though God himself had heard my woeful prayers, I wasted no time in making a rushed deal with the devil:

A night of his time in exchange for money I didn’t have.

It sounded so simple. It sounded easy… if only cash had been what Fraser Scott wanted at the end of the night.

A man like him, with his intense grey eyes, hard muscles, and obvious charm didn’t need his wallet filling. He didn’t need anything I was willing to offer freely.

By the time it was all over, what Fraser demanded, in fact, was me…

And it turned out that Fraser wasn’t the kind of man who walked away from a deal without coming out on top.

3 In The Middle Of Chaos Lies Beauty Stars ⭐

There was a lot to like about The Bad Wedding Date and not just that divine cover!! The first 30% of this story was magic. Because who takes a hot stranger to their siblings wedding after a random meeting at the bus stop? Our heroine was quirky and lovable whereas the hero you just wanted to lick like a gelati. But unfortunately it kind of nosedived round the middle.

“Who knew someone as handsome as you could be so pretty on the inside, too?”

Charlotte is the black sheep of her very wealthy family. Refusing to conform to their standards, she's been ostracized. Yet not enough to be exempt from the wedding from hell. When Charlotte's bestie/fake date ghosts her on the day of the event, it was fate that Fraser was there to offer his services...or was it?

“It’s a dangerous game to play, inviting a stranger into your family. I could be a villain.”

Fraser is an enigma. Charming, gorgeous, available. However there's an ulterior motive that soon comes to light. As he is the perfect wingman at a wedding full of twats, it's not difficult to understand Charlotte falling tits over ass for him.

“Fuck me like you don’t have to take care of me, and then when it’s over, kiss me everywhere like you’re sorry.”

Did I mention how fantastic the first part of the book was? Cute moments, wonderful banter and loads of chemistry. All great until the big reveal, and then the push and pull became the focal. To be fair if you enjoy suspense and drama mixed in with your romances this would be perfect for you. I just lost interest.

Ooo, Vicki, Vicki...

Fraser and Charlotte’s journey was so beautiful and those wonderful characters grabbed and touched my heart profoundly!
With their strengths but also with their vulnerabilities they made an amazing couple and there wasn’t a moment I wasn’t rooting for them.

«I promise to be the best mistake you’ve ever made.» Fraser 💓

I was so invested in their story!! While I was avidly reading it, I was also dreading the time I would reach the end...

And the epilogue!!!!! Oh my God!!!! 🤩 It was beyond any expectations I might have had!!!! Especially the last section, it was so emotional and soul stirring that I might have shed a couple of tears...!!! 💞💞🙇🏻‍♀️

Wonderful development of characters and plot, engaging storyline, very well orchestrated flow, dual pov and fantastic cover!!!

The author, with her captivating writing, managed very efficiently (once again) to harmonise amazing songs with this story!

Vicki James might have gone radio silent for several months but she did deliver a beautiful and amazing story filled with romance and feelings that swept me off my feet!! 💖

It was a beautiful love story and the writing was truly so well put together, but I found the book (and I'm sorry for that) lengthy. Sometimes you have 500 pages and it flows so fast, you read it and don't even know how you come to the end. In this case (474 pages) I almost lost interest somewhere in the middle because I had a feeling nothing is happening, or everything is happening so slow (and I'm not speaking about slow progression in time... I mean one day is 100 pages, figuratively speaking). Nevertheless, I'm really glad I've finished it because the end and epilogue were worth it and I'll definitely read more books by this author in the future, because she has a wonderful way with words.

But let me also tell you that Fraser is so damn sexy I cannot even. Ugh I love EVERYTHING about him. And the bromance with his mates. Delish. It's one of my absolute fave things in a book! I adored their meet cute and connection, one of my favourites ever!

The suspense, the mystery and the wtf is going to happen next moments made me love The Bad Wedding Date even more!

If you think you've already got your favourite Vicki James book then you might need to think again once you've read this one.

There are some books which you know will stay with you for some time, not specifically because of the plot or the characters but because of the way the author writes. They pull you in and entwine you in the story and their vision so that you finish the book with a satisfied sigh. The Bad Wedding Date is one of those books. I felt as though I was in the world of Fraser and Charlotte, living each moment with them. Their relationship felt real, despite the strange way in which they met, with each chapter bringing to life the tug of war that they have with their choices and their feelings. I loved them both and the visual that Vicki gave for Fraser didn't hurt one bit! Although, I think that making you fall in love with her characters is one of the things Vic does best. That is because she writes them as real people—okay so Fraser doesn't have a normal 9 to 5 job, but his antagonisms and need to protect those he cares about make him the perfect hero. As for Charlotte, well she certainly isn't just his supporting character, this is very much her story too. She develops throughout each chapter along with the great plot line and her relationship with Fraser. As I read in the very small hours, I kept imagining TBWD as a film. With London as a fantastic backdrop I could see the bright red buses in the background, the amazing buildings and the richness of the Savoy. In fact, I could practically hear a triumphant orchestral sound track to go with it. As the playlist contains three of my favourite songs; thank you Smokey, Candi and Randy, I would be in my element watching the film version on a lazy Sunday with a cuppa. To be honest, that would be a great way to read the book too.

The top and bottom of it is, Vic James has written another winner and I urge you to give this story of growth, forgiveness and acceptance a read.

"The guy looked like he protect you from the world then destroy you in private."

"The first time I saw her sleeping, it would be with her permission, right after I'd held her small frame."

"Money isn't what interests me. Moments are."

This was just bland. The story and action weren't compelling. Even the steamy scenes weren't that steamy. I just kept putting it down and finding other things to do, which is a bad sign. After 2 whole days and I'm only halfway through and couldn't care less to find out what happens, I'm throwing in the towel. It wasn't bad it was just boring.

Have you ever read a novel, sat back, and just let it sink in surrounded by absolute silence?

That's what happened to me when I finished this book—what a beautiful way to tell a story. The characters are dynamic, the chemistry is palpable, and the story has this magic way of weaving around you while immersing you in this phenomenal setting.

Vicki's writing always manages to capture me this way, but Fraser and Charlotte, I can't even begin to describe how much I fell in love with them both. I couldn't get enough, and I devoured it in one sitting.

Add this beauty to your TBR it's worth every second you wait for it's release xx

‘Some experiences had to be treated like a dream – a well-played trick of the mind that once made you feel alive when really you were fast asleep.’

The Bad Wedding Date by Vicki James was so much more than what we first anticipated. From the cover and title, it sounded like your bog-standard fake wedding date trope, and we mean no disrespect saying that it’s usually a hit and miss for us. And whilst the synopsis grabbed us and had us eagerly waiting for it to drop onto our kindles, we could not in any way have envisaged just what this Author had in store for us. This is definitely NOT your bog-standard fake wedding date scenario; this is SO much more! Well done Vicky James on taking a much-written about scenario and turning it on its head in such a unique well-written fashion. This story intrigued us and kept us riveted from start till finish. The Bad Wedding date drew every emotion out of us along the way, as it explored that grey area between right and wrong whilst emphasising what unconditional love really entails.

“Sometimes, sweetheart, the best things in life come to us in the most fucked up of ways.”

Charlotte Grant comes from a family wholly caught up in grandeur and public image. It’s not what you know darling, it’s who you know. Because, if you don’t look good, we don’t look good. Blah blah blah…you know the type of people we’re talking about here. The boring and fake kind! Well, unlike her family, Charlotte is not shallow, nor is she pretentious or two-faced. Rather, she’s kind, giving and everything her family is not, she is kind to the bones. We did find her at times to be slightly too self-deprecating, which wore us down a bit, however, we couldn’t not love her for what she stood for, what she believed in, and how she treated others. In the face of the hatred and belittling, she was a victim too, we rooted for her to fight back and stand tall, facing them all head-on. But sometimes we get stuck much like a broken record, and we need that gentle nudge from someone who only has our best interest at heart, someone who pushes us to roarrrrr with self-confidence! We need that unconditional love to bolster our strength, without making us into something we naturally despise ourselves.

‘Sometimes, in the middle of chaos lies beauty. Charlotte happened to be mine.’

Fraser Scott is a bit of an enigma. We fell down the notorious rabbit hole, trying to figure out just what Fraser was all about and what he needed Charlotte for. We immediately felt the attraction and connection he developed for her. Fraser was a man on a personal mission, a keeper of secrets, and a bringer of violence and justice. He was LUSCIOUS! What he brought out in Charlotte and she in him was pure magic to read, and we devoured every moment.

“I know what I did, Charlotte, but I can’t regret it because it led me to you…”

We fell in love with Fraser and Charlotte instantly, we suppose you could call it insta love –pun intended – and as for them as a couple, we swooned…HUGE SWOON! Sparks flew and pulses raced! The Bad Wedding Date is a wild ride; it’s twisty and passionate, dark, and thrilling and it’s definitely one of our favourites by Vicki James. Fabulously written it commands your attention and this Author certainly knows how to grab a reader’s attention!

Before I start to review this I need to say that I am aware I am rubbish at actually writing a decent review so I apologise to Ms James if this really doesn’t do this book justice.

This book, this story about Fraser and Charlotte was genuinely not what I expected. Even though I have read books from Ms James in the past for some reason I was expecting a light hearted romcom sort of tale. Wrong!
What I got was a story that took me away from life. A story that had my heart melting as I giggled, swooned and sobbed my blooming heart out. Not once but twice this story had me ugly crying because of the way the emotion was put down on the page. Hell it even had me crying with pure unadulterated joy.

Fraser is dreamy but he’s also as hard as iron and as soft as a teddy bear. Quite the combination I know but honestly he is everything that a leading man should be. Don’t get me wrong I wanted to slap him around the head a couple of times because of things he did in the story, trust me he would have deserved it, but those things were needed to move the story in the direction it needed to go.

Charlotte, I love her so flipping much. She’s everything, more so than Fraser. She is the light that makes the world brighter. She is smart, sassy, and seriously sweet. Watching her grow throughout this story was an absolute pleasure.

I honestly can’t find the words to give this romantic, thrilling, sexy, delightful story the justice it deserves but I will say this, I read a lot, an awful lot of books but this one blew my mind completely. For me, this is the book of the year (yes I’m aware it’s only January but 🤷🏻‍♀️), hell it’s the book of the decade because quite frankly I have not read a book that pulled the emotions from me like this one did in a long time.

Well done Ms James, well done.

First 5 star read of 2022 and this book certainly deserves all the stars!
From the first few pages right up to the end, I was literally hooked into Fraser and Charlottes world. I think in some way we can all see a bit of ourselves in Charlotte - outwardly Confident but anything but inside - and that endears her to you even more. Fraser spent his life saving others but it took Charlotte to save him!
I think I could write war and peace on what I loved about these characters and this story but I don’t want to spoil it for others so if you want a page turner that will draw you in and chuck you out at the other end with a smile on your face and leave you thinking about it afterwards then this is certainly the book for you!

Charlotte’s family are absolutely awful, the way they bully her. My heart broke for her. She needs a date for her sister wedding (because of awful family) however at the last minute her bestie bailed, enter Fraser. Who may or may not have intentionally invited himself to attend as her date. Is Fraser being there coincidental?
I thought I had this story pegged. I am happy to say I had no clue. It was so much more than I thought. I like stories that keep you on your toes. It’s not predictable and there are a few surprises, my favourite kind to read.

If you ever want to read a contemporary romance with characters that make you laugh out loud but also swoon, this meet cute story is definitely for you.

It reminds me so much of The Wedding Date movie from almost 20 years ago (😱 time flies so quick!) with Debra Messing and Dermot Mulroney, and that is one of my favourite movies.

I loved the friendship between the guys and some of the side characters annoyed me a lot, but they also brought up the best of Fraser and Charlotte.

Their banter is so good and the steamy scenes are catching fire on the page.

I loved Charlotte, she was a badass woman, she took nothing from nobody. And she was so lucky to meet up with smart mouthed Fraser, he was great. And when these two got together the chemistry hit the highest limits and they were steamy.

Very addictive story, will keep you glued to your kindle unable to put it down.
A terrific read, I highly recommend it.

One thing you can be certain of when you pick up a book penned by Vicki James is that you are going to absolutely love it! This author never disappoints. As always, I was hooked from the very first chapter; fell in love with the characters; found the storyline intriguing, exciting and captivating, and not only did I find it difficult to pause reading when real life needed me, I also didn’t want the story to ever end.

I sincerely hope that you are able to read this book before learning anything about its storyline. For me, when I read a story, I not only wish to connect with the characters and feel every emotion, but I also favour not being able to anticipate which direction the story is likely to take, and I found The Bad Wedding Date ticked all those boxes. With regards to the storyline itself and how it could potentially affect the characters, there were times when I had my concerns, times I had my doubts, times I felt quite confident and certain regarding how the plot would unfold, and then there were times I was subsequently proved wrong – all which I absolutely loved.

Every character plays an integral role in this story and whether you like them or not, they are brilliantly written into the storyline and their character development is perfect.

I adore Charlotte. Her strength, determination and caring nature are qualities I admire. I love that she’s her own person. She has an incredible personality which is perfect for the path she chose to follow. I cherished the moments she was truly happy, but felt angry and sad witnessing how some people treated her.
I am not going to say much about Fraser because I’d love you discover him for yourself. I will say that I found him very intriguing and extremely hot 🔥 🔥 I was desperate to learn everything about Fraser Scott and the reasons for his actions – I thoroughly enjoyed the anticipation.

I so desperately wanted Charlotte to have the happy ever after she so very much deserves. I had my hopes and dreams of how this story would conclude and it has been a pleasure to witness this journey. I am rather jealous of those experiencing this story for the first time.

I award The Bad Wedding Date 5 must-read stars. This book has the most fabulous storyline that I was 100% invested in from start to finish. I absolutely loved every interaction between Charlotte and Fraser… even those that hurt my heart. The connection and chemistry that Charlotte and Fraser share is palpable throughout. I can wholeheartedly recommend this book to you to read. I know you will absolutely love it too!

"𝙎𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚𝙨, 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙢𝙞𝙙𝙙𝙡𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙤𝙨 𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙨 𝙗𝙚𝙖𝙪𝙩𝙮."

Wow!! This book, this story, the characters, Fraser and Charlotte, the chemistry, the twists, the turns……I knew it would be good coming from Vicki, but actually it was epic and I think one of my favs, although I say this everytime I read one of Vicky’s books!

I was gripped from the minute I started, but when Fraser and Charlotte met at the bus stop, I knew the immense chemistry would have me invested until I finished.

This isn’t your typical love story, it is so much more. The intrigue, the plot, the twists and turns keep you immersed, but the beauty in the writing consumes you.

Fraser (sigh), he was unexpected, I thought he was going to be one personality with how the story starts, but he is deep, protective, beautiful, unafraid and dangerous giving him a bad boy edge, and he owns it.

"𝙁𝙖𝙣-𝙛𝙪𝙘𝙠𝙞𝙣-𝙩𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙘. 𝙄𝙣 𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙣 𝙩𝙬𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙮-𝙛𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙨, 𝙨𝙝𝙚’𝙙 𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙣𝙚𝙙 𝙢𝙚 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙖 𝙨𝙤𝙡𝙞𝙙 𝙢𝙖𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝙪𝙣𝙬𝙖𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙤𝙡𝙫𝙚 𝙩𝙤… 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨, 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙝𝙚𝙡𝙡 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙬𝙖𝙨."

Charlotte I actually love her, she is profoundly independent, and uninterested in being given a free ride, she wants to make a difference in peoples lives and lives honestly and simply much to her families dismay. When a stranger helps her out of a sticky situation, things are about to change. Together these two are dynamite, but with Fraser’s secrets could everything they feel be enough for them to move forward?

“𝘼 𝙘𝙤𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙚 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙥, 𝙖 𝙗𝙤𝙤𝙠𝙨𝙤𝙧𝙚, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙖 𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙚𝙩 𝙗𝙖𝙧 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙤𝙣𝙡𝙮 𝙨𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙣 𝙥𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙞𝙩. 𝙏𝙝𝙖𝙩’𝙨 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙞𝙩 𝙩𝙤𝙤𝙠 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙢𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙛𝙞𝙣𝙙 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙄 𝙛𝙚𝙚𝙡 𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙄’𝙫𝙚 𝙗𝙚𝙚𝙣 𝙨𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙢𝙮 𝙬𝙝𝙤𝙡𝙚 𝙡𝙞𝙛𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧. 𝙏𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙚𝙩 𝙨𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙨 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙛𝙚𝙚𝙡 𝙨𝙤 𝙛𝙪𝙡𝙡, 𝙮𝙤𝙪’𝙧𝙚 𝙨𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙙 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙢𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙗𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙩.”

The epilogue…oh what a way to end this adventure.

10* from me and one you definitely need to read now instead of adding to your TBR!

So I saw this book on Kim Holden's Bright Siders page and I’m going to have to send her flowers or chocolates…no tacos. Tacos will be worthy of this recommendation for sure.

The Bad Wedding Date. Simple enough title. I thought I knew for sure what I would be getting into with this one and I love these types of reads. So, with that in mind I started reading.

Did I get fake wedding date? Yes. But holy shit I got so much more.

"I deserved a day. I wanted a lifetime."

I got the rich snob family with the one daughter who they pay no mind to. I got bad guys and good guys and better guys and the best guy. The Charlie Hunnan blonde haired, bearded, muscled, tatted guy. But is he just dreamy on the eyes. Hell no, he’s a secret badass vigilante who set out on an objective to kill and ended up landing eyes on a woman he can’t ignore.

"You make me feel...everything."

Seriously.

From the beginning to the multiple epilogue ending that made me cry.

This.book.is.the.shit.

And from the first moment they meet at the bus stop, the chemistry sizzles until it just...just go read it.

"Fuck me like you don't have to take care of me, and then when it's over, kiss me everywhere like you're sorry."

I could not put this book down! Charlotte comes from a rich family and her sisters wedding is the event of the year and everything Charlotte hates. She’s nothing like her well to do family, she doesn’t want to be privileged and she lives her own life working a regular job. I love how down to earth she is and felt bad that she had such a horrible family who don’t understand her at all.

Fraser is a muscly tatted bad boy wrapped up in a designer suit and he’s a bit if an enigma to Charlotte.

The chemistry between the two is off the charts but this isn’t your average romance story, and there’s so much more to be revealed.

I loved every minute of this story it kept me on my toes throughout and ended beautifully. I highly recommend going into this one totally blind and enjoying the ride! Five stars from me.

This is one tasty morsal of a book , that will have you drooling at the end of each page with anticipation of what is coming next .

I fell down the whole of Charlotte and Fraser's story , and I never wanted to climb out .

They were never supposed to meet. She was just a job, a means to an end......... Until the only thing she was , was everything.

There is good and evil in this world , black and white, but there is also the grey area, the area where Fraser lived a lot of his life .
Charlotte didn't believe in the grey area, there was right , and there was wrong . That is until Fraser showed her what exactly went on in the shadows .

Such a brilliant read
