"OJIBERISH" is a cartoon introduction to the Ojibwe language. This beautifully illustrated picture book covers basic Ojibwe greetings, names, seasons, months of the year, and how to count to ten in Ojibwemowin. Lyons has also included the story of one teddy bear's adventure in "Little A Teddy Bear's Vision-Quest"
There is more than one author in the Goodreads catalog by this name. This entry is for Michael ^3 Lyons.
Michael Lyons is the author and illustrator of a number of children's books, comic strips, comic books, and even a coloring book written in the Ojibwe langugage. He is an Anishinaabe cartoonist from the Leech Lake Indian reservation in northern Minnesota. In the early to mid 1990's, Lyons created two college comic strips,"Coffeehouse-Five" and "Prairie Rose". He has also written and illustrated underground comic books including: "Gray Alien Meditation" and "Rockstar Cartoonist: A Comic Book Autobiography".
His first chidren's book, "Little Cutie: A Teddy Bear's Vision Quest"is about a ragged red and white teddy bear who goes on a "vision quest" to find out who he is and where he belongs. Along the way, Little Cutie gets advice from a number of woodland animals (all with Ojibwe names) about life, living with humans, and how to find "the great spirit". In 2010, Lyons adapted this book for the stage, and directed 13 young, Native American girls in the musical version of "Little Cutie".
"Amix Blood", is a young-reader's chapter book about a bi-racial "vampire/elf" struggling to find her place between two different cultures. When Amix is sent to a boarding school to learn how to behave like a proper vampire, she attempts a daring mid-day escape and meets up with "Steven". Steven turns out to be a kindred-spirit to Amix in that he too is of a "mixed-heritage". He is an Alien-human hybrid disguised as a mummy. Together they resist the terrible elf-hunter, "Santa Claus" and try to get back home. Once again, Michael Lyons directed a stage version of his book.
Lyons plans to continue to release more books and comics, on amazon.com, in the future, including a comic book inspired by the album, "Music from the Elder" by KISS. The comic is called: "KISS: Cartoons from the Elder".
Odd little book. I didn't get the space thing. But it is an introduction to Ojibway for elementary students. So I would recommend it because of the scarcity of materials
