Press Release
Corbett vs. Dempsey presents two artists of different generations from the broader Caribbean diaspora. Emilio Cruz (1938-2004), a major figure in New York's 1960s figurative expressionist movement, who showed at Martha Jackson and Zabriskie Galleries, was born in Brooklyn of Cuban heritage. We will be exhibiting an important late work by Cruz, the 20-panel set of drawings from 2004 titled "I Am Food, I Eat the Eater of Food." Omar Velázquez (b. 1984) lives between Puerto Rico and Chicago; his vibrant canvases feature deep perspective backgrounds with tableaux of objects in the fore. Corbett vs. Dempsey will be showing new canvases and hand-crafted instruments by Velázquez. These artists – both committed in their personal way to representation, both engaged with allegory and allusion – are acute social critics and defiant humanists whose national and ethnic identity is at once central to their work and at the service of an expansive universalist vision.
