During the #INC4 #plasticstreaty negotiations in Ottawa we will be presenting an inspiring solution designed in the global south which includes waste pickers from the beginning. #DRS for #reuse and #recycling with waste pickers is one of the instruments to ensure that more than 90% of the beverage packaging which is currently littered is collected and reused or recycled. Much more reuse and recycling, more security and income for waste pickers and less littering and plastic pollution. I know it sounds too nice to be true but that's what #zerowaste is about; a triple win for society and the environment. We should not aim at nothing less!

Just returned from COP16 Colombia where I shared a message that I believe is often missing in these spaces: to bring our radical visions for nature-centered, community-led, liberated futures into reality, we must ensure that people everywhere have access to the practical skills and knowledge to make and sustain those futures. I'm inspired by the incredible work happening across sectors, but there's a noticeable gap when it comes to enabling active, ecological citizenship. How do we go beyond sustainable consumerism and truly empower people to be part of regenerating our world? How can we support each person to take their health and future into their own hands? This mission is close to my heart because I know how ready people are. I’ve seen it through Earthed and advaya, and it's reflected in global research. I'm committed to closing this knowledge gap, offering nature skills through Earthed creating transformative education via Advaya, and developing a fund to help grassroots projects start, thrive, and grow. #cop16 #cop16colombia #cop16cali #radicalimagination #edtech #openaccess #ecosystemrestoration

The Global Partnership for Education (GPE) is focused on ensuring that all children have access to quality education. Technopolis, in collaboration with partners Triple Line and Learn More, has conducted an evaluation of a new operating model aimed at transforming education systems to support accelerated reforms and outcomes. The report assesses the initial phase of this model, emphasising the significance of system transformation in achieving 12 years of quality education for every child, along with a year of preschool. There has been a lot of negative commentary about the Nobel for economics among international development practitioners in the Global North. I agree that it is a shame that it takes economics to make mainstream knowledge in other disciplines widely known and accepted. But there is no Nobel Prize for history or sociology- and maybe we should not pay too much attention to a prize awarded by a well intentioned tiny minority of people. Still, it’s telling of the disconnect between some parts of the international development North and the South. Much of the criticism is grounded on the idea that the arguments are Western- centric. That they unfairly criticise the South. But the proponents of these criticisms fail to see that across the South this Nobel prize is not outright rejected and has in fact triggered local conversations about the importance of institutions. I’ve been following the debate in Peru. It has been plural, multi-disciplinary and rich. It has included a critique to the hegemony of economics and has acknowledged the limits of the arguments but it has also broadened the discusion and opened an opportunity to reset the agenda locally. As I try to argue in this series for On Think Tanks it’s time we are allowed to have the conversations we want to have.

I was invited to Televisión de Castellón in Spain to discuss the current Oxfam Intermón campaign on access to clean and safe drinking water for all. This campaign aims to raise awareness about the alarming situation of over 2000. 000,000 people, or 1 in 4 globally, who do not have access to safe drinking water. One of the most affected countries is Zambia, which is the focus of this initiative. During this opportunity, I also shared my experience in Spain, particularly my Master II in International Studies of Peace, Conflict, and Development. I briefly presented the subject of my research on the use of children as soldiers in armed conflicts. This sensitive issue affects many countries worldwide, and Haiti is not exempt from this phenomenon, even though it is rarely discussed. This observation is due to the limited number of studies on this subject. I wondered if the lack of academic production on this issue is because the phenomenon does not exist in the country. However, my research proved that it is rather the lack of interest of Haitian society in the well-being of children in Haiti that is the main cause. The saying "If it's not my child, there's no reason for me to care" is the perfect excuse to leave children at the mercy of unscrupulous armed groups that terrorize the Haitian population. According to the 1989 Convention on the Rights of the Child, the use of children in armed conflicts is one of the six most serious violations of children's rights. Faced with this reality, it is crucial to become aware of the situation of children in Haiti and to act to ensure their protection against all forms of violence. I call on all stakeholders, both local and international, to join forces to put an end to these unacceptable practices and to ensure a safe and flourishing future for all children. Together, we can make a difference and protect the rights of the most vulnerable. Let's act now for a world where every child can grow up in peace and security.#children’s rights#children

#ECOSOCYouthForum2024 #youth2030 #SDG16 #YPS As young people, we need more than just a superficial role in political and civic spaces. To achieve the commitment of the 2030 Agenda of leaving no one behind, we need to be included as partners in decision-making spaces, not just be seen as beneficiaries. The Youth, Peace and Security (YPS) Agenda provides guidelines on how to include us as key stakeholders to build peaceful and sustainable societies. ECOSOC Youth Forum was an excellent opportunity to connecte with young leaders from around the world who are champions in making the world a better place. However, we don't just need a voice in political and civic spaces; we need the proper agency to effect change. Check out my closing remarks from the SDG16 Thematic Session on Engaging Youth in Building Peaceful and Inclusive Societies at the ECOSOC Youth Forum 2024. Let's work together to make meaningful participation in political and civic spaces a reality for all youth.

This week we at @UNICEF Innocenti are proud to release our 2024 Young Visionaries report. It's a fascinating work, written by 12 of our Youth Foresight Fellows, giving us a unique insight to the world - and its toughest challenges - through the eyes of the very people who will inherit those challenges: young people.   Through 12 pieces they spotlight issues like AI, education, the climate crisis, well-being and meaningful youth engagement. I have been truly struck by the bold recommendations they are urging us to make.   Examples? Well, when it comes to education, they argue for more flexible education systems that allow students to choose their own subjects and even their own teachers. And they intrinsically understand the links between their education and our growing climate crisis - arguing that schools in the many affected areas be fully equipped with air-conditioning, or even move to a "night mode" to cope with the excessive heat that is hindering their learning.   And on the very cutting edge, we have artificial intelligence - a growing concern for our youth. They are deeply concerned about the lack of regulation around an emerging technology with the potential power to radically shape their lives, and demand the establishment of safety mechanisms and deeper research to better understand both the challenges and opportunities presented.   We're just scratching the surface here. The report looks at other aspects of climate change, other emerging technologies like genetic engineering and biometric data - and much more.   As we look to the future, the recommendations in this report are critical to shaping forward-looking policies, grounded in child rights, and reflecting of the aspirations of young people. We must build a future where young people don’t just have a seat at the table — instead they must help set the agenda. Yet, thus broadly understood, pursuit of the common good should be a necessary step in producing more equitable societies and a planet that continues to be habitable. But the devil is in the detail. There is more disagreement than agreement about what comprises the common good. Questions we will explore in the webinar include: Is the common good any more than an abstraction? - Who defines it? - Whose responsibility is it to secure it and, more particularly for today’s discussion, what role does philanthropy have in revivifying the notion and helping to secure its various elements, especially where philanthropy itself is one of the institutions facing scepticism? - Can philanthropy’s commitment to this issue help to restore its legitimacy and the necessary behaviour to become a societal norm for the future?
