In Love and War #2

Fall of the Stars

Rate this book
England is bleeding.

And there isn’t a thing I can do about it.

I am once again a prisoner to Wessex, captured by King Egbert because holding me hostage will bring them to him—my two Vikings who will risk heaven and earth to save me.

But I don’t need saving.

I am Princess Emeline, and I was taught by the best, and his name…Skarth the Godless.

The man whom I love more than anything in this world.

But things begin to blur when Ulf the Bloody reminds me of the promise I made, and that promise is that I belong to him.

We must work together to overthrow King Egbert, but the war I fight within my heart is far more dangerous than anything I will ever face on the battlefield.

The choice is not simple because we all must make sacrifices. But I soon realize that all is not fair in love and war.

Lives will be lost.

Hearts will be broken.

And come dawn, life as we know it will be changed forevermore.

This book was a great surprise, with amazing characters and story.
I only didn’t agree with the direction in one part of the book! I thought unnecessary!
It’s worth the reading.

At this point I don't even know what to fucking say.

SHOOKITH

ABSOLUTELY FLABBERGASTED,I CANNOT

What even is this woman doing with my damn emotions.

Book two came in packing an almighty punch and slaughtered me.

Emeline was everything I thought she'd be. Bloody thirsty, fierce and loyal to a fault, this woman was nobody's fool and despite the horror show that was her life.. she took the best parts of it all and THRIVED. Now that's not to say it was easy. This woman went through hell, literally. She fought monsters, pushed through the macho bullshit that was her life and she did it whilst still maintaining her integrity. She was sweet and kind and despite everything she has seen and done, she still saw good in those who didn't always deserve it. I fucking loved her. QUEEN.

Skarth did not disappoint with his nasty mouth, sinful hands and fierce love for his pretty prinny.
He frustrated and excited me. His love for Emeline was not pure and simple it was dark and suffocating and it was addictive. He pushed boundaries, he thrived in chaos and he proved time and time again despite everything that nothing will ever exceed his love for her. Not even him. What a man.

Now there are many parts that make up this story. That will make your blood boil and your heart feel like it's about to burst through your damn rib cage. All of which I can't talk about because this book is one big ass spoiler. So what I will say it this...

I was on EDGE. The climactic build is like nothing else. The action is brutal to say the least but nonetheless entertaining to my little black soul. This story consumed me and went in so many directions I swear there's a whiplash claim to be had. But it made me FEEL in every way. I loved these characters so fucking hard. I devoured their story like a dehydrated prune on a wet day in Britain. It filled me to the absolute brim with overwhelming emotion and by the end I just cried in both relief and satisfaction. I didn't go how I thought... it was so much better.

All I'm going to say is ULF. that is fucking all my friend.

Monica you little monster.. I fucking love you. You my dear, are a fucking queen.

This story is a rollercoaster of hearbursting highs and gutpunching lows. The best and worst kinds. I don't know what I expected but this exceeded it by a continent.

And that ending.

Ok now I'm finished.

This was a fantastic follow-up to the first book North Of The Stars. Love Skarth and Ulf the Vikings who would do anything for her and also worship the ground she stands on. But then again Emeline is a strong FMC who doesn’t let anyone walk over her in this book. She cleans up devours and shows her power. This was brutal and delicious with characters that stand out. Really good duet and the audiobook narration is fantastic as well. If you do dive into this duet please be mindful of the contents and themes.

“Love is a complicated beast. It doesn’t make sense because it shouldn’t. Matters of the heart never do.”

Skarth, Emeline, and Ulf are back for the war they were intended to fight. Lives will be lost, revenge will be had and love will be tested. But all’s fair in Love and War. . .

My mind is at war with itself.
Decisions, Decisions. . .

Skarth?

Ulf?

I can’t decide!!!

Well Monica has done it again taking an unexpected romance to an all time next level. If you didn’t love Skarth and Ulf in “North Of The Stars”, you are definitely going to fall to your knees and worship them in “Fall Of The Stars.” My mind is trying to take in everything I read over the last 2 days. The sexual chemistry is unbelievably out of this world. Hold on to your horses because Chapter 15 is blistering hot (no skipping ahead). And when you think nothing can be hotter than what you just read in 15, then you stumble right on into Chapter 18, I might have reread that chapter twice 😉. I miss this trio already, James has left me with the biggest book hangover. Is this The End? I’m at a loss for words.
There is a reason this book is the number 1 release in Viking Historical Romances, because it must be read! I can’t recommend this book enough, it’s written in the stars!

I believe it was written in the stars for me to meet both men as they taught me so much. They made me the strong woman I am today.

Monica James has done it yet again. She has eviscerated me with another all-in, ball-busting, heart-stopping, action-packed, out-of-the-box romance read. The battle between England and the Scandinavians, life vs love, good versus bad, and the battle of herstory vs history are alive and well.

Emaline and Skarth are in love and out for revenge. Skarth’s old best friend, Ulf, is more prominent than ever, and where does England reside in all of this? These are just some of the questions we get answers to.

I finished FotS about 5 days ago, and I am still shook. When Monica James puts her pen to paper, watch out, because you will be left with a 100% angst-filled and angst-driven book. She executed every little plot point, character-driven storyline, and minute detail to perfection.

I was in love, saddened, shocked, elated, and eventually content with this final book in the duet. If possible, I would give this book, a million ‘North Star’ stars, but alas, I cannot. Five stars is the max and therefore it will be. No matter what trope Ms. James executes, she can write brilliantly. Highly recommend!!

5 ‘North Star’ Stars!

I did not like this book. I had so many issues with it. These are just a few.

1) Skarth mentions radar. I'm sorry, this is the 9th century. Radar didn't exist.
2) The writing drove me crazy. She used contractions (again, 9th century), used words that didn't make sense in their context, changed paragraphs midway through a character speaking, which confused the crap out of me. Not well-written.
3) If Emeline said it once, she said it a million times, she would never let a man "do that to her again." Yet it kept happening. Over and over and over again.
4) Emeline was a selfish and narcissistic. She thought she could save everyone, but she usually caused more problems than she solved. Every time she "ran off into the woods" I knew she would get kidnapped or raped or beat up. It happened every single time.
5) The author pushed all the boundaries and honestly, it felt like she did it because she could, not because it furthered the story in any way. It was almost a "let me see how gross I can be and then, I'll push it to the extreme." I don't have any triggers and this book triggered me with its intentionally nasty, awful, not-plot-furthering plot points.
6) Unrealistic in too many ways. I can suspend disbelief, but when a character has sex immediately after being CRUCIFIED, even I can't push past that. Or when a female character swings a sword and takes off someone's head with one swing. I don't even buy it when a male character does it.
7) I got sick of being told Emeline was "a warrior." I KNOW. Show me she's a warrior. Maybe instead of letting her do stupid crap, make her smart, make her use common sense. Don't tell me she's a warrior because a Viking trained her.

I struggled to finish this, but I forced myself through it. I should have DNFed it. I don't think I'll be reading any other books by this author.

If you’ve read Monica before, you know when you pick up any book by her not only will the story keep you at the edge of your seat, it’s going to drive to crazy (and I’m talking about to throw your reading device crazy!) and Fall of The Stars was no different!

Fall of The Stars is a beautiful story with so many twists and turns I literally felt like my heart would burst out of my chest. Emeline and Skarth have my heart, and Emeline’s character was a pleasant surprise to say the least. However, there is some back and forth in the book that I didn’t particularly enjoy and felt like it maybe wasn’t needed.

Lorrrd. This couple. This world. These characters. This story. For sure Monica James’ best work yet where I’m concerned. Hell, this duet is good. This duet that I somehow thought was a trilogy. I might have cursed and screamed a tad upon realizing it actually wasn’t – especially with that ending. Quite frankly, it couldn’t be more perfect or real for characters like Emeline and Skarth, and I appreciate that, though that doesn’t mean that I don’t still hunger for more. I’m greedy like that. And before you ask – no, it’s not a sad or unhappy ending.

This duet as a whole had blown my mind, each chapter containing its own revelation, each morsel given just making me more addicted. It’s hard to put down once you start, on the other hand I wanted to savor and not rush through it, which most definitely is the best type of book for me. Emeline and Skarth’s journey is brutal and ruthless, complex and intricate, passionate and fierce, and so, so refreshing. Unlike anything I’ve read before. I loved the unpredictability of it all. If you like historical romances – and even if you don’t – this is a must read!

The sequel is finally here!! Monica killed in this genre as I saw in the first book of this series and I have been waiting for this second book in this series forever. The characters are amazing and the storyline just hooks you in from the start.

The best thing about this author is her heroes and their arrogance, hotness and just general personality always makes me love the books more. Now I am even more excited for the third book of this series. I also want the stories for a few side characters because I totally am attached to them now 😂.

Definitely recommending this one for all the dark historical romance loving people out there.

Monica James is certainly a jack of all trades- various genres, themes, tropes, and she dove into this VIking duet with all the zealousness and intensity I’ve come to expect from her. This epic conclusion wraps up the story after the turbulent beginnings and jaw dropping cliffhanger. And, I think many will find this finale satisfying. Ultimately, the finale focused a lot on the journey of revenge and a broader Viking world view, though I love the character journey of a Viking princess. I’m not quite sure the finale quite worked for me- and the pacing felt a bit off and uneven, and the ending was certainly interesting, though not quite sure it was satisfying for me personally. But this story is well written and researched, and certainly exploding with Viking energy. <3.5 stars>

Omg.
This was a masterpiece. Emaline is such a strong heroine. The book is part of a duet and Oh my. The book, like the first one, is dark, gritty and raw. The love story is amazing, of course and I fell in love with both Skarth and Ulf.
The book is dark, so beware before you go in. The author did an amazing job with this story. It's one of my top favorites and one that I will reread! I highly recommend it.

4.25⭐️ This book was very high-stakes, full of romance, action-packed, and so much more. I was not let down by this book, and I am so glad I picked this duology up! I will say, this one had me stressed and on the edge of my seat, but there were so many twists and turns that made me keep flipping pages. The chaos was all worth it in the end! If you love fantasy romance, go read this duo please. Spice 3/5

WOW! This was a real rollercoaster of brutal emotions.
I love Monica's books, whatever genre she writes in, but this duet is definitely something pleasantly surprising different.

The first book was like a tsunami of actions and emotions, but this book was just WOW!
Incredible fascinating adventure in a brutal and sinful world of Emeline's "hugrekki" the warrior Queen of England and her Vikings 😍🔥😍

I don't even know how to describe it without spoilers, but holy shit, this book is an unbelievable gripping, dramatic and brutal experience.

Emeline story is not for faint-hearted. Her life was a living hell and she was held like a slave until she freed herself from the captivity.  And yet it hasn't broken her, it's made her stronger. She's an impressive badass heroine, with a bloodthirsty desire for revenge (literally!). I swear this woman is worse than 1000 angry Vikings 😂

I would love to discuss with you the two hot Vikings, Skarth and Ulf, but I can't because => spoilers 🙄 but hot damn these two are like a hot tornados. Brutal, hard, cold and deadly for their enemies and absolute loyal, devoted and loving to Emeline. Don't confuse this with sweet and cute. They definitely aren't that. We're talking about the real Vikings here 😏 🔥

If you like stories about hot alpha vikings and badass heroines with a lot of steamy scenes, this is a book for you.
If you like sweet and swoony romances, this is definitely not a book for you.

I love dark, gripping and disturbing romances and this book is exactly what I love.

I received an arc for a honest review.

OMG!!!! MY HEART!!! I was at the edge of my seat throughout the whole book. COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN. I NEEDED to know what's going to happen. Monica had my aniexty through the roof!!! I was this close to read the ending first, but I didn't. LOL

What a battle!!! I'm just going to leave it at that because I don't want to spoil anything, but there were things that happened that I tend not to like in books. BUT oh man. Monica makes it WORK. She's always pushing me out of my comfort, and I LOVE IT! I am totally torn between Skarth and Ulf. These two vikings men are to die for. Lol I need more viking books!!!

If you do not have any triggers and love dark romance, I HIGHLY recommend this duet!!!

Do check the triggers before reading.

This story is going to blow your mind and capture your soul for real! It's captiving! It's unpredictable, it's original, it's magnetic, it's all that you can ask for and more, so much more.
Monica's talent never stop to amaze me. She writes masterpieces every time she gets a plot on her mind. Now this is a historical romance, but even if your not a big fan of this trope, give it a try. If there's an author who can change your mind about something, that's for sure, Monica James. Every single word clicks perfectly, giving you the highest quality of twist, drama, emotions. Sometimes it goes so rough sometimes so sweet, but no matter what the note of the scene is, it's always going deep, under your skin, on your mind. It's fantastic. A real, raw, romantic historical story.
Happy reading!

Wow- This was an action packed conclusion to Emmeline's story. A dark viking romance with a heroine that I loved! I really loved the pace of the story and the element of surprise that kept me on my toes. I don't want to give away spoilers but I will just say that the love triangle is definitely addressed. I'm embaressed by the sheer stupidity of this book. It started off GRIM with her being raped, yet again, and then retaliating by knifing her brother in the physical asshole. I should've known to stop then 😫 moving on to the gruesome and downright bizzare faked death which served no purpose and it only managed to get WORSE. I hate that I paid actual money for this.

Hot mess doesn't even begin to describe how manic the storyline was and honestly, it should've never had a sequel. I felt like I was watching Vikings Reality TV. Drama for the absolute sake of drama. Emeline, I am no longer a fan. I understand the need for character growth but did she really need to be a warrior, healer, midwife and Queen of fucking everything with no groundwork laid for any of it? Characters were introduced and then discarded. Plans were half heartedly started and then never played out. The storyline was lacking any direction. I really liked Skarth and his chapters were the majority of the rating but all him and Emeline did for this entire book was have hate sex. Ulf was fairly pointless and I was honestly just praying for a threesome so I could close this sad chapter in my book reading journey. And it wasn't even worth it. 🤢

Misogynistic wasn't a word in Viking times, let alone an idea. I'm pretty sure that tipped me over the edge. I can't even with any of it. 🗑️

"𝙔𝙤𝙪 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙢𝙮 𝙣𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙝 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙧, 𝙖𝙡𝙬𝙖𝙮𝙨 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙢𝙚 𝙝𝙤𝙢𝙚 ... 𝙏𝙤 𝙮𝙤𝙪"

Im so sad this series is over, i feel like i need to click the next episode!

We dive into book 2 after finding out that 𝙎𝙠𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙝 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙜𝙤𝙙𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙨, 𝙐𝙡𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙗𝙡𝙤𝙤𝙙𝙮 and 𝙋𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙀𝙢𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙚 have been betrayed. By who will have your eye twitching

This basically picks up where it left off in book 1, with secret plots and a fight like no other for the throne of england. With war, gore, and a VERY strong FMC, i couldn't ask for more. There are also very spicey sprinkles of viking smutt in this one, which i was here for!

Fall of the Stars by Monica James was an exhilarating ride. This dark historical viking romance was so twisted and complex. The plot is full of dizzying turns and I don't think I have processed it all yet. Emeline is one of the most fierce heroine I have ever read and she will rule with help of her viking warriors but not before she suffers pain, heartbreak, death and violence. The story was a glorious collage of deviant passion, sweet love and hard core action.

I am not doing a plot summary as it is really too convoluted to describe. Princess Emeline of Northumbria has been used and abused and she still grew strong with each scar. England is burning. Sussex. Essex. Marcia. Northumbria. She won't let Prince Egbert win but he is too powerful and cunning. Skarth the Godless, the viking warrior and her love has to protect his family and her and his men. Ulf won't stay behind either. Together they are ready for a long battle. But will they win? At what cost?

This story has triggers so read carefully. Emeline will be dragged through all kinds of physical and emotional challenges and she was just a champion. She is fearless. Stubborn. Reckless. Proud. She will have her vengeance at any cost. She has this beautiful fierce heart that always tries to protect the innocent. She won't stand for any wrong. But it's an uphill struggle. She will bleed and cry and get her heart and body broken over and over again. But her spirit never broke. Her Vikings are intense and loyal and intimidating but she really needs their love only. It was a complicated emotional situation for all of them but Emeline chose herself always. And she finally emerged victorious. You will be on your feet a lot of time as the fast paced storyline will take you from one extreme situation to another. Emeline shares an epic bond with Ulf and Skarth that is written in the stars. I won't spoil and tell you if she chose one or both but she made the right choice. That much I can say. The chemistry was raw and animalistic as they connected with their bodies too. This was a long, torturing bloodied journey but the ending was blissful and perfect.

Skarth & His Hugrekki — What A Mind-blowing pair.
And Ulf, omg, UNFORGETTABLE.
I was tongue-tied at the end of book 1, but with book 2, I had no choice but to sign over my soul to these characters
Fall Of The Stars is gory, filled with bloodshed, loss, love and a fight for freedom.
( okay, let's not forget SMUTTY AF, it was 🔥🥵 )
I was left speechless.
Emeline's story was not one that I expected. Monica James, the mastermind that she is, weaved magic into every line and I was enraptured by this fierce, strong woman.
This story was her, more than the other characters, for me, at least.
She had me captivated and awed with every action.
Unpredictable, and every bit addictive Fall Of The Stars is filled with the unexpected until the end. These characters have me—mind, body and soul.
I couldn't pick a quote because I loved it all too much. IT WAS SO GOOD.
Every word, every line — I was stunned, and would go back to her story a hundred times.
There's no way to stop reading.
I give this a gazillion stars 🌟 🔥
My queen, Monica, you're mind-blowing.
A must read 👀 if you can handle it 🥵

Five gloriously bright stars for Emeline and her Viking!

From the ashes of a burning England, we find a Princess and the Viking(s) who will stop at nothing for those they love. They fight wars in and outside the castle walls. They fight wars that stain the soil red. They fight for love, for revenge, for freedom.

Monica James delivers an epic story of one of the most independent and strong heroines I’ve read in a long time. She is fearless and powerful and many times completely underestimated. Emeline may be a princess bought and sold for men’s gain but she is no pawn. She is born to be a Queen and won’t stop until she has her name in the history books.

Her Vikings will tear at your heart strings while lighting your insides on fire. Because Skarth and Ulf…I mean, how do you choose!?

This love story, with a bloody time in history as it’s backdrop, is one for the ages!

Victory or Valhalla!

As much as I didn't want Emeline, Skarth and Ulf‘s story to end, I'm glad that it's a duet and we don't have to wait for another book. Because their story ended with a bang! I don't think I could fall in love even more with their story. But Monica did a damn great job at keeping my attention because I couldn't put it down. I loved Emeline. She's even better than she was in the first book. You can see so much growth in her character, how much stronger and resilient she has become. I admired her so much. And my Vikings? I loved them. And I'm all for Emeline embracing her love for these two Vikings, even though I'm not a huge fan of a love triangle.

You don't want to miss out on them all! I know I said this before, I never thought I would read a historical romance or a Viking romance. But Monica James has made me read and loved them. Amazing read!

Be prepared to be unprepared when reading Fall of the Stars! Monica James has once again delivered an amazing read that had me on this rollercoaster ride full of emotions.

This story is full of ups and downs with jaw-dropping twists and some of her HOTTEST scenes!

Monica put her all into this book! From start to finish, I felt like I was holding my breath because I knew something was going to happen. I just didn't know what or when.

This book is gritty, it's raw, and quite graphic at times. Yet, it's also beautifully told and had me under it's spell from beginning to end.

I HIGHLY recommend reading this duet! It doesn't matter if you're a historical fiction fan or not, Monica James knows how to write a freaking book and she freaking nailed this one!

OMG Monica did it again!! There were so much happening throughout the book. Eeekk I was on the edge of my seat and loved every minute of it & this book.

**Soft Sigh**

Emeline was so freaking strong and amazing I'm in love with her character. Omgosh the edge of this book. Ulf and Skarth I freaking loved them so much.
I don't know how to explain everything without revealing much. But this book was freaking everything. The battle, the love triangle, what Emeline went through throughout the book.

Monica did an excellent job with another marvelous duet.👏👏

This duet was fabb!!💞 Love it so much.

This was a 4.5 Star read for me.

After reading and loving the first book in this duet, I could not wait to get my hands on the second half of the story. As with the first, there are some darkish and a bit disturbing things that Emeline goes through on her path to the throne. There was a little bit of a twist in this one. Ulf, I was cheering for this character so hard….I think I actually liked him a bit more than Scarth. The epilogue….it ended their story fine but I’m really interested in Ulf….what happened to him, did he pursue Sigirith and what about Aedan? I’m hoping we will see more form Ms. James on these side characters.

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. I DONT HAVE ENOUGH WORDS TO DESCRIBE HOW FANTASTIC THIS BOOK IS. IT HAS SO MANY TURNS, AND THEY ARE TWISTED WITH PAIN, LOVE, AND SO MUCH HEARTBREAK.

EMELINE IS THE BEST HEROINE THAT I READ. SHE IS STRONG AND HAS NO FEAR OF ANYTHING; SHE IS BETWEEN ULF AND SKART, BUT WHO SHE ENDS WITH WELL, YOU NEED TO READ IT AND FIND UP. AMAZING ENDING LIKE ALWAYS, MONICA GIVES US A MASTERPIECE. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT.

“Nothing compares to this—nothing. And I want to feel this way for the rest of my life. I want Skarth forever, which is why we make the sacrifices we do.”

I love a good historical type story and the old English and Vikings tales are one of my favorite. I loved that the author used the names of the territories and characters that I recognize from actual history but spun a fictional tale of love and war.

“Your pain is mine, hugrekki. If it could be my burden to lessen yours, I would take it all. I know we are different, but I know these words are important to you.”

This is book two of the duet and I was intrigued but also apprehensive to read it. I’ll be honest, there is cheating in book 1 and I was not a fan of the main male character, but the story interested me enough to continue reading and see what would happen. A second guy comes into play in book 1 that turns it into a MFM for book 2 which I really liked. But my favorite part was the character of Emmaline, she was strong throughout having been trained to fight by a Viking and going against all social norms as a woman who comes into power. She sticks to her guns even when her heart is pulled in different directions. It’s very face paced and action packed! Lots of twist and turns that will keep you on your toes. I do recommend it for anyone who loves a bit of history with their love stories!
