Monica Eppinger is an anthropologist and legal scholar specializing in Ukraine.  She teaches at Saint Louis University, where she also serves as Co-Director of the Center for International and Comparative Law.  Dr. Eppinger first became involved with Ukraine in her first career as a U.S. diplomat, when she served at the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv from 1995-97.

Monica grew up in the First Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas.  She was inspired to diplomacy in childhood by watching a fellow Baptist, President Carter, and his leadership for peace in negotiating the Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt; that’s when she dedicated herself to the cause of peace and she began to study Russian from age 11.  She served in the U.S. diplomatic service for nearly a ten years with tours of duty in Ukraine and in West Africa and several rotations in Washington responsible for U.S. policy towards newly independent countries of the former Soviet space.  After she left the diplomatic service, she put down roots in the Bay Area when studying for a Ph.D. at Cal and she with husband Dave still return regularly to the Bay.  She proudly and fondly calls Lakeshore Avenue Baptist Church (a BPFNA partner congregation) her California church home.  In St. Louis, Monica is a member of Second Baptist Church where she is Outreach Chair and serves on the Social Justice working group.  She speaks Russian and Ukrainian (and remembers when she could also speak Chinese and Hausa!).

Monica Eppinger es antropóloga y jurista especializada en Ucrania.  Imparte clases en la Universidad de Saint Louis, donde también es codirectora del Centro de Derecho Internacional y Comparado.  La Dra. Eppinger se involucró por primera vez con Ucrania en su primera carrera como diplomática estadounidense, cuando sirvió en la Embajada de Estados Unidos en Kiev de 1995 a 1997.

Mónica creció en la Primera Iglesia Bautista de Topeka, Kansas.  Se sintió inspirada por la diplomacia en su infancia al ver a un compañero bautista, el Presidente Carter, y su liderazgo por la paz en la negociación de los Acuerdos de Camp David entre Israel y Egipto; fue entonces cuando se dedicó a la causa de la paz y comenzó a estudiar ruso desde los 11 años.  Sirvió en el servicio diplomático de Estados Unidos durante casi diez años, con misiones en Ucrania y en África Occidental y varias rotaciones en Washington como responsable de la política estadounidense hacia los nuevos países independientes del antiguo espacio soviético.  Después de dejar el servicio diplomático, echó raíces en la zona de la bahía cuando estudió un doctorado en California y, junto con su esposo Dave, sigue volviendo regularmente a la bahía.  Con orgullo y cariño llama a la Iglesia Bautista Lakeshore (una congregación asociada a BPFNA) su iglesia en California.  En San Luis, Mónica es miembro de la Segunda Iglesia Bautista, donde es la presidenta de Alcance y sirve en el grupo de trabajo de Justicia Social.  Habla ruso y ucraniano (¡y recuerda cuando también podía hablar chino y haussa!).
