4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 1,976 ratings

"Welcome spring with the newest treat from Brenda Novak. This is the book her fans, old and new, have been waiting for.  A big, tantalizing read!"—Susan Elizabeth Phillips, New York Times bestselling author

A summer of healing, friendship, love…and a secret that could change everything.

After the death of her US senator father, Marlow Madsen travels to the small island off the coast of Florida where she spent summers growing up to help her mother settle the family estate. For Marlow, the trip is a chance to reconnect after too long apart. It’s also the perfect escape to help her feel grounded again—one she’s happy to share with friends Aida and Claire, who are hoping to hit reset on their lives, too.

A leisurely beachfront summer promises the trio of women the opportunity to take deep healing breaths and explore new paths. But when her father’s will reveals an earth-shattering secret that tarnishes his impeccable reputation and everything she thought she knew about her family, Marlow finds herself questioning her entire childhood—and aspects of her future. Fortunately, her friends, and the most unlikely love interest she could imagine, prove that happiness can be found no matter what—as long as the right people are by your side.

Compelling Characters
I really enjoyed this novel, overall. The characters were complex and well-developed. I felt like I understood their motivations even when I didn’t always agree with their decisions.I was able to figure out a lot of the “twists” ahead of time so I didn’t feel an element of suspense but I was sufficiently engaged with the plot that I wanted to continue reading when I had to set the book down because life interrupted. The enemies to lovers interactions of the main characters provided good tension, something that I always enjoy with this trope.I was very impressed that the author was able to provide complexity in all of the main characters despite approaching the story from multiple point of views. This seems like such a feat! I especially liked seeing how Marlow and Walker reflected on the past and what they wanted for the figure. While there was a romantic relationship that came to fruition over the course of the novel, I would say that this was not the focus of the novel overall. Instead, the focus was on these characters finding themselves and coming to terms with who they were versus who they had been. I would classify this as contemporary women’s fiction rather than a romance novel. The only thing that I felt was rushed was how Marlow’s mother processed the “big reveal” that takes place in the book. While I agreed with the conclusion she reached, it did seem to occur faster than expected in a situation of that magnitude. Other than that, the novel’s pacing felt authentic.

Marlow has had a rough year, a stalker her friends ex, the pandemic, and her father died. Deciding to spend the summer at her parents beach house with her two girl friends was a great idea. They all had some big changes coming in their lives, they had to decide what the next chapter in their lives would become.

Eileen has lost her husband. Who would have thought he would die before her? She was the one with the health issues, MS had been hounding her for more than twenty years. Now she just needed to move forward.

Rosemary has worked for Eileen for more than forty years. But she has a secret, hopefully it will remain a secret. She raised her two sons mostly alone, Rudy her ex husband left when Reese was five. And he has been in and out of their lives ever since.

Walker has always had a thing for Marlow. He first tried to kiss her when she was twelve. But she wasn't interested, and half a dozen times since, still not interested. Now the animosity between them is noticed by all. Why can't he seem to move on?

Aida and Claire have an unusual friendship. Claire had a affair with Aida husband only she didn't know he was married. Divorced now Aida is trying to decide what comes next in her life, picking up the pieces is hard. Claire lost her house in a fire and her business went under because of the pandemic. Time to get some perspective and move on with their lives.

What could possibly go wrong now? Who might be sneaking out to see a man after everyone else goes to bed?

FINAL DECISION: With plenty of drama but little real angst, this book follows three (or perhaps five) women visiting a beach island as they confront their lives and the men who have played a part in those lives. I really enjoyed the bonding between the women and the actual romance in the story.

THE STORY: Marlow Madsen, a divorce attorney, returns to the island where she spent her summers in her youth. Returning to visit her mother, Marlow is accompanied by two women friends. The three women are all at crossroads in their lives. For Marlow, her return to the island results in her finding out that much of what she believed about her family and childhood was untrue. As she questions her life, Marlow and her friends are all struggling with life, romance, and their futures.

OPINION: This is a book filled with "family" drama -- although not everyone is officially part of the family. All of the main characters have dramatic turns in their stories. I enjoyed the interwoven stories. The book has a lot of drama, but isn't really angsty and thus is a good candidate for a beach read -- a page-turner that is definitely binge-able.

Marlow's story was my favorite and definitely the dominant story in the book. Her return to the island explores her professional life, her friend relationships, her family relationships, her past, and her romantic relationships. She has determination, but I also liked her humor and her ability to recognize her own faults. Her relationship just worked for me in this book and kept me reading the book as the other stories unfold. While I didn't take the story too seriously, I thought that Marlow's story grounded the book and because I really liked her character, I accepted all the other stories on their face.

There are plenty of twists here that keeps the pages turning and the romance here worked for me. The characters have difficult intertwined lives and problems so everything seemed really complicated until the knot becomes untied at the end.

WORTH MENTIONING: This is a great beach read.

CONNECTED BOOKS: SUMMER ON THE ISLAND is a standalone book.

STAR RATING: I give this book 4 stars.

Marlow Madsen seemed to have it all, daughter of a US Senator, from a family with a lot of wealth and a prestige law practice. When her father John Tiller Madsen dies very suddenly, she and her two girlfriends Claire Fernandez and Aida Trahan head to the family home on a small island in Florida. Elaine Madsen has suffered from MS since Marlow was young, but with the help of her faithful housekeeper Rosemary Cantwell she manages very well.

This book is marked as a summer beach read, well thank goodness I wasn’t sitting on a beach or I would have been sunburned. Almost at the first page, you pulled into the wonderful writing of Ms. Novak, and find yourself turning each page well into the middle of the night.

As the book has turns, the reader knows that something is going to be expected, could it have something to do with the sons of Rosemary, Walker and Reese?

Great book and looking forward to many more from Ms. Novak

Marlow was a divorce lawyer in California. She was so tired of her job that she decided to close her practice and go home. Tiller, her dad, had recently passed away. Eileen, her mom, had MS. Her dad’s passing had been sudden. She decided to spend the summer on the island where she had spent summers growing up would be just perfect. She would decide after the summer what the next part of her life would look like. Walker, a childhood friend, was now the chief of police on the island. She brought 2 friends to spend the summer with. It was definitely a summer to remember.
