There’s nothing worse than spending an entire evening trying to figure out what to watch only to run out of the time you had to watch it in the first place.

Luckily, there are many apps out there that help you find new movies to watch whenever you want, and cut out this waste of time. Here are seven apps that allow you to do just that.

1. Taste

First up, we have Taste. If you’re looking for an app that’s dedicated to helping you find the best movies for you, then Taste is a great option to do just that.

When you first get started with Taste, you’ll be shown a bunch of popular movies for you to rate. If you haven’t seen any, you’re free to skip them. From there, you can also pick what streaming services you have access to and any additional interests, like Bollywood or classic movies. Then you can really begin.

In many ways, Taste itself works like Tinder. You swipe right to save movie suggestions that you want to watch, and swipe left to skip. The suggestions come from other users, who Taste thinks have similar preferences to your own. You can tap on any suggestion to learn more about the movie, its director, and the cast. You can also see reviews for the movie itself.

The more you swipe, the better Taste can predict what you’re going to be interested in, and if you don’t like the swiping mechanic, Taste also provides a more uniform list of movies that match your tastes. It's a pretty unique way to find film and TV show recommendations.

2. Friendspire

If you struggle with movies, TV shows, podcasts, and more, then Friendspire might be your best all-in-one solution for recommendations.

To get started with Friendspire you’ll first need to make an account. There are a couple of steps you can take here that the app will use to then give you recommendations, such as picking movies that you’ve enjoyed in the past, genres that you like, and any friends that are using the service.

You can also choose to opt out of certain reviewers that the app uses as a standard. For example, if you don’t trust Rotten Tomatoes or Metacritic, you can remove the rating based on those sites.

Once you’re all set up, Friendspire will begin to show you movie recommendations catered to your interests. The biggest appeal here is that it will show you different recommendations on multiple different metrics.

For example, the app will show you movies that it thinks that you will enjoy based on your picks first, and then below that, trending picks that are generally popular. It will also show you lists based on specific movies that it knows you’ve enjoyed, and movies from popular services such as IMDb that you haven’t yet watched.

3. JustWatch

JustWatch is primarily a streaming guide for movies and TV shows, but if you’re looking for a good recommendation app that includes those services, then JustWatch is a great place to go to find them.

JustWatch is great because it helps you to figure out where exactly you can find that new movie or show you’ve been wanting to see. If you have access to a lot of streaming services but can’t seem to find it, then coming to JustWatch is a great idea.

That’s not all that the app is good for, however. JustWatch allows you to fill out a quick form to show what you like, and from there, it will begin to give you customized recommendations catered to your interests.

4. Spotflik Movie Recommendations

Next up, we have the Android-only app Spotflik. If you’re looking for an easy-to-use layout that focuses first and foremost on making it simple to find new movies, then Spotflik may just be the best choice for you.

As you may have come to expect, Spotflik first requires you to create an account so that it can get a feel for your preferences. It does this by simply showing you a list of movies and asking you to rate as many of them as you can. From there, you’ll be able to access Spotflik’s recommendation screen.

There are five bubbles here for you to choose from, with four of them being genres and one generic. All in all, they add up to about 20 or so recommendations for you to look at. These bubbles update twice every day, and you can find more generic recommendations if you scroll down through the app.

5. TV Time

If you’re looking for something a little more straightforward and easy to use, then TV Time is a great way to store what movies you want to watch next, as well as get some good ideas and recommendations.

With TV Time, you make an account by selecting all the movies you’ve watched from a pretty extensive list and then choosing which movies you want to watch from another list. Once you’re set up, you can access this list of movies that you wanted to watch and gain more information by tapping into them.

To expand your list, you can click on the Discover More section, where TV Time will show you a list of currently trending movies to look through and learn more about. There are no fancy algorithms or preference-based recommendations here, though you can filter your discoveries by genre, or what other people are adding to their own lists if you so wish.

6. WATCHA PEDIA

Next up we have WATCHA PEDIA. This app is a great resource if you’re looking for a simple system to get started with a lot of variety in your recommendations.

WATCHA PEDIA starts with you making an account and rating a series of movies. The app requires at least 15, but more is always better. Once you’ve rated your movies, it begins to really shine. The biggest draw here is in the variety of different ways that WATCHA PEDIA recommends movies to you.

There are current box office hits, movies similar to others you like, movies based on your ratings or on directors you like, actors you like, and more.

There are even collections of other people’s recommendations that are picked based on your tastes, as well as taste analysis based on your ratings. WATCHA PEDIA works for TV recommendations as well, which is great if you don't already know the best sites to find which TV show to watch next.

7. MUBI

Finally, we have MUBI. This entry is a bit of a departure from the others on this list, but if nothing so far has appealed to you, then MUBI might just be what you’re looking for.

Unlike most of the entries on this list, MUBI doesn’t recommend movies based on algorithms or preferences. It doesn’t recommend movies at all. Instead, MUBI is a collection of hand-chosen cinema available to you through its app. These are movies that make up great cinema that you’d be hard-pressed to find anywhere else.

The catalog here is extensive, with a new movie being added every day. You can view them all online, or download them to your device to watch back later. If you’re truly a lover of cinema but struggle to find new engaging movies to watch, then MUBI may just be the perfect solution.
