Gonzalo H. Rodríguez is a media artist and an independent artistic researcher based in Berlin. In his films, sounds, live videos and installations, Rodríguez explores diverse forms of narrativity that move along the perception of subjective and objective storytelling, addressing the possibilities of reality against the backdrop of radical fiction. Rodríguez studied fine arts and design at the Universidad Católica and the Universidad San Francisco de Quito, Ecuador, and media arts at the Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln in Germany. Currently, he is working on an artistic research project dealing with a fictional precarious city of the future called Villa Futuro.

Report during the symposium:

THE SETTLERS OF VILLA FUTURO

‘The Settlers of Villa Futuro’ is a participative audio-visual storytelling project exploring the participative narratives of precarious urban communities to reflect on our own possibilities and limitations to imagine the future together. The project is a speculative fabulation of the future based on the intelligence of solidarity in precarious urban communities. Solidarity has allowed these communities to cope with an adverse present and to build a future that fosters a participatory identity of collective support and a new relation with their environment. In this sense, the project is focusing on aspects of human agency that produce participatory social structures and is deeply inspired by the history of the residents’ organizations of Villa El Salvador in Peru, Hak Nam in Hong Kong and the current situation of the Ocupação Izidora in Brazil. The central question is: How can we use audio-visual narrative media to imagine a future as a global community?
