It’s well known that the Chrysler Building was the tallest building in the world, and many know the tale of a top-secret spire being erected and topping the structure. For those who don’t know the legendary tale, the Chrysler Building had topped out at 921 feet (281 m) in 1929. Three and a half miles south in Lower Manhattan, the Bank of Manhattan Trust Building (now known as 40 Wall Street) was also under construction, poised to become the world champion with a planned design reaching 927 feet (283 m).
But Chrysler’s architect William Van Alen was determined to win this fierce competition. On October 23, 1929, they topped the Chrysler Building with a 125-foot-spire that had been surreptitiously developed, becoming the world’s first building to break the 1,000-foot barrier at 1,046 feet. The Bank of Manhattan building was now unable to win in this unofficial competition, angry about the secretive maneuver. They topped out their building in November of 1929 at 927 feet as planned.
Beyond this well-known tale, there are some obscure facts I find intriguing.
Little-known fact #1
Despite the Chrysler Building being taller once the spire was added, the Bank of Manhattan Trust Building did claim the title of the world’s tallest completed building on a technicality. It opened on May 1, 1930, as the world champion. But that victory lasted only 25 days when the Chrysler Building opened on May 26.
Little-known fact #2
The Chrysler Building is still the tallest brick building with steel framework in the world, containing 3,826,000 bricks. But the Anaconda Smelter Stack chimney built in 1918 in Montana is the world’s tallest all-brick structure at 585 feet (178.3 m).
Little-known fact #3
When the spire was added to the top of the Chrysler Building on October 23, 1929, it was the day before Black Thursday, the day that initiated the infamous Wall Street Crash of 1929 which accelerated the subsequent Great Depression.
Little-known fact #4
The previous building occupying the Chrysler property only lasted 51 days from groundbreaking to demolition. Funds for the partially built Reynolds Building dried up, and it was quickly replaced by the Chrysler project.
Little-known fact #5
Perhaps the least-known fact of all is not documented on the Internet nor in the media. The Chrysler Building was so ahead of its time in stature that it still ranked among the top 100 tallest in the world until early 2018. Even throughout the skyscraper boom in New York, East Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East that began around 1990, Chrysler held onto that top 100 ranking for so long. But it was only a matter of time.
Prior to 1990, no building in Asia topped 1,000 feet. Between 1990 and 2020, there were 88 buildings completed above that threshold, pushing the Chrysler Building further down the list year after year, decade after decade.
At the beginning of 2018, the Chrysler Building was still ranked 96th in the world. In March, without fanfare, the structure unceremoniously dropped off the list. Despite no press covering the momentous occasion, this skyscraper nerd definitely took notice for one reason only. As someone chasing down the top 100 buildings in the world and attempting to enter each one, I keep careful statistics. And the removal of the Chrysler Building from the world’s top 100 meant I would need to visit yet another building in China to keep up.
At least Chrysler was still the 19th tallest in the U.S. in 2021, dropping to 22nd by 2025, but firmly within the top 100 for many decades to come. My numerous self-guided walking tours of Manhattan have helped me check off 98 of the top 100 American buildings, a goal once complete but perpetually being erased with modern New York construction. If I can just find a way into the private condos of #2 Central Park Tower and #6 432 Park Avenue, I can RE-complete this travel goal.
My favorite little-known fact about the Chrysler Building is that it had nothing to do with the car company, which was never headquartered there as many assume. Rather, it’s named for Walter P. Chrysler who commissioned it as his own personal project.

Mostly for 2 reasons; first it was one of the 2 buildings built in a race to be the worlds tallest, (the Empire State Building being the other) and second is it’s pure beauty. It’s Art Deco lines and shape make it one of the most beautiful buildings in New York if not all the world
The Chrysler Building was commissioned and paid for personally by Walter Chrysler, the head of the corporation of the same name. It was finished in 1930. The corporation did not pay for it and never owned it. Although it was built for the auto manufacturing company, Chrysler paid for it himself so it would stay in his family. His children inherited it and the family sold it in the early 1950s. As a New York “icon”, the name stuck.
“What are the not-so-good things about Chrysler Building (NYC)?”
I feel especially qualified to answer this question, because my grandfather (my precious mom’s father) worked as a construction worker, who actually helped build the Chrysler Building.
Every time I walk past it, I feel this connection, and it gives me a smile. I never got to meet him (he died in 1939), but there’s still that family connection right there in Midtown.
So I have no “not so good things” to report about that art-deco landmark on East 42 Street. It’s a familiar touchstone which makes the City home.

Architecturally speaking, the Chrysler building blows the Empire State Building away. It’s beautiful, if you like the Art Deco styling.

The Chrysler Building was more carefully and artistically built - with great lobby murals/ceilings and marvelous art deco ornamentation inside and out, plus galvanized steel window frames that are still in service, while the ESB’s all had to be replaced recently, even though from the same manufacturer - but it’s currently on hard times and needs an owner that will take better care of it. It’s also better located, across the street from Grand Central Terminal and a couple of blocks from the theatre district. People who care about architecture and art are bigger fans of the Chrysler Building than of the Empire State Building.

Many years ago, in 1996, I even went into the Chrysler Building…rode the elevator to the highest floor I could reach…the 71st, if I remember correctly, and took some photos of the Empire State, and the original World Trade Center though some of the triangular win

Because it is one of the most beautiful buildings in New York. Growing up, there were three famous buildings: The Woolworth Building, the Chrysler Building, and the Empire State Building. Prior to the building of the World Trade Center in the 70s, these were the three highest buildings in New York. Alas, since 9/11 one cannot simply walk in and check out the gorgeous lobbies in these buildings, but I took advantage of the opportunity when I was a youth. It is sad that this is no longer an option. The Chrysler Building is one of the most beautiful Art Deco Buildings in the city.
I'd say the degree to which it incorporates Art Deco styling features. It also has a lavish Art Deco themed lobby. Really the epitome of that style. It was designed to stand out.

LIFE photographer Margaret Bourke-White lived in a different apartment on the 61st floor. Interestingly, Chrysler refused to lease to Bourke-White, so LIFE signed the lease for her. No one ever accused Walter P. Chrysler of being a progressive.
The Empire State Building, on the other hand, doesn’t seem to have housed anyone on its uppermost floors. That’s not to say people didn’t sleep in any of the offices below, however.

This is a bit of a stupid question as anyone can just Google the answer - as I did.
The Chrysler Building has 77 floors, soaring 1048 feet high in Midtown East. Containing 29961 tons of steel, 3,826,000 bricks, and nearly 5,000 windows, this art deco skyscraper may not be the tallest, but it is one of the most recognized due to its crescent-shaped spire.
