For a while now, Microsoft Defender has been a good protector for the masses; a simple, free solution without many flashy features. However, the antivirus got another notch on its belt after AV-TEST gave it full marks in a recent assessment.

Microsoft Defender's Strong Defense Versus Ransomware

As spotted by Neowin, AV-TEST recently gave Microsoft Defender the maximum score for ransomware protection. This is a fantastic feat, as ransomware sits at the top of the more feared strains of malware terrorizing the internet.

As stated in the AV-TEST ransomware defense report, the institute didn't pull any punches:

All the products have to successfully defend against ransomware in 10 real-life scenarios under Windows 10. The test involves threats such as files containing hidden malware in archives, PowerPoint files with scripts or HTML files with malicious content.

In these tests, Microsoft Defender scored 40 points—the maximum an antivirus can get. And it wasn't alone, as the vast majority of antivirus programs put under the microscope, from Avast to Kaspersky, also passed with 40 points.

Good News for Windows Users

This report is sure to give some reassuring news to Windows users. Not only does the built-in Windows antivirus have enough power behind it to stop ransomware attacks, but so do a lot of other free favorites out there.

As such, there's a good chance that we'll eventually reach a state where it doesn't matter so much which antivirus you pick, security-wise. Instead, just choose the best Windows antivirus that suits your personal needs best and enjoy the stellar protection it provides.

Bye Bye Ransomware

With Microsoft Defender putting up such a solid defense against ransomware, it's reassuring to know that computers will have a top-notch antivirus right out of the box. We'll have to see if ransomware developers will up their game, or if this is the beginning of the end for this strain of malware.
