The ready-to-wear trend cycle is its own tricky beast—but jewelry? It’s different. It’s more personal, intimate, and less apt to oscillate from one trend to the next. That means it can be a delicate balance for brands to parse out future collections without losing sight of what’s current. The upside, of course, is that many designers can operate from within to decide what’s next—but fall 2022’s biggest jewelry trends aren’t just more of the same.

According to New York-based stylist Taylor Okata, bigger, chunkier jewelry formats will evolve beyond the chain-link necklace this season. “Take a look at the statement earrings à la Schiaparelli fall 2022 Couture—and I saw hoops at Mugler so big you wanna dunk on ‘em.” he says. Even more, he forecasts a future filled with flora and fauna: “Who doesn’t love the joy flowers and animals bring? Designers like Bernard James are showcasing a beautiful take on florals and fine jewelry, and the floral pieces by Botter and Miu Miu for fall/winter 2022 are also much fun.” He also cites the “elaborate butterfly collars by Dries Van Noten” and large cuffs at Alaia and LaQuan Smith as indications that we’re moving away from dainty, barely-there stacks.

Model and designer Jessie Andrews, whose coveted line Bagatiba is a favorite of celebs like Kaia Gerber and Adriana Lima, is incorporating personal obsessions—like playful beads and block letters—into her fall collection. “People watching is one of my favorite things to do, seeing how fashion has transformed personal uniforms and the general populations street style,” she says. When designing, she “looks at what’s necessary and how it fits in with functionality.” For the upcoming season, that translates to “black string necklaces with oversized charms, colorful glass and plastic rings, as well as netted jewelry"—the latter of which she nods to LVMH prize winner Niccolo Pasqualetti as the master.

Ahead, the only five jewelry trends for fall 2022 that matter—plus where to shop them now.

Charm bracelets are back in full effect at Ulla Johnson—and jewelry designer Stella Simona, whose brand Haati Chai features custom and heirloom-inspired pieces, agrees. "I think personalization is going to be a big thing. Custom charms, one of a kind stones, and trinkets styled traditionally and in out-of-the-ordinary ways is something we'll see a lot of," she says.
