China imposes sanctions after a Lithuanian deputy minister visits Taiwan

BNS 2022.08.12 15:44

China has cut-off cooperation with Vilnius in the transport sector and imposed sanctions on Lithuania’s Transport Vice Minister Agnė Vaiciukevičiūtė following her visit to Taiwan.

China’s Foreign Ministry has also stopped Beijing's cooperation with Lithuania’s Transport and Communications Ministry, the Reuters news wire reported on Friday.

The ministry’s representatives told BNS it had not yet received official information from Beijing.

Vaiciukevičiūtė and a Lithuanian business delegation visited Taiwan earlier this week to discuss cooperation in the transport sector.

"A productive week in Taiwan, looking for more ways of LT Transport cooperation with TW maritime, shipping and aviation companies," she tweeted on Friday.

Her trip comes days after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited the island. In response, China launched large-scale military drills and also sanctioned Pelosi.

Lithuania plans to open a trade office in Taipei in September.
