Ruin Duet #1

Rush & Ruin

Rate this book
From USA Today Bestselling author Catherine Wiltcher comes the first part to a seductive new mafia romance duet…

My Protector. My Ruin.

Ella:
Edier Grayson is the King of Shadows.
A ruthless sinner. A beautiful liar.
On the eve of my eighteenth birthday, he kissed my lips and painted the stars in the sky for me, but when I woke the next morning he was gone.
Now he paints the streets of New York City red, and his heart is as cold as his promises.

Edier:
Ella Santiago and I were raised in this cartel life together. I loved a girl with sunshine in her soul, until her father gave me two choices.
I walked away to spare Ella my fate.
Now she’s the one woman I can’t have, and the only woman I see.

Years later, we find ourselves in the same city.
I hate her for it.
My obsession is too strong...
I love her even more for it.

But Ella should know that all shadows crave light.
This is my world, and I’ll do whatever it takes to have her back in my arms.
The newspaper she works for? I bought it.
That date she made with a colleague? I crushed it.
I protect what’s mine—what’s always been mine—even when she can’t admit it.

Even when my enemies are determined to break it.

UPDATE: Catherine has confirmed that it is NOT Nacio who is the alchemist nor are we done seeing Queenie. So now it’s possibly down to a female relative? Idk - the possibilities are endless.

UPDATE #2: Catherine recently posted an update on the next books release and she asks why we think that the alchemist is just one person??

I don't even know how to start this off and it will probably be a long, long review just to get all my thoughts out there and express how much this book meant to me.

Nothing and I mean nothing prepared me for this book. I have loved Catherine's writing from the moment I started reading her books. I stumbled upon The Santiago Trilogy, and I was hooked, by her writing, the way she came up with such incredible plots and twists, the OTT men, and their love for that one woman. I've never been disappointed in anything she has ever written and honestly she just keeps getting better and better. Waiting for this book was so worth it once you see the final results.

We knew Edier and Ella's story was going to be explosive, but we could have never predicted how much pain was these two characters would have to go through throughout the years.

''Mi cielo''

Edier is given no choice but to leave Ella's side once things come crashing with his past. We find out more and more about what he was forced to do as a child and what he was meant to do in the orphanage he eventually was rescued from. The things he had to endure, do to survive were absolutely shocking. He was only 11 by the time Joseph and Anna adopt him and by that point he basically had nothing good in his life and he wanted to die the night we first see a flashback in the book but a little ray of sunshine in the name of 5-year-old Ella saved him from going through with it.

After a horrible attack and what he believes to be a curse coming back from his former life to destroy the one he has now, he leaves her and everyone around him. Ella is just 11 while Edier is 17. There is nothing romantic about them but despite their age difference their closeness in terms of friendship and growing up together created a bond. He was protective of her so when she got sick the same night of the attack he felt like he was meant to leave and give her a chance. Obviously the curse doesn't exist, but he grew up superstitious and believes it plays a factor but in reality Ella has lupus.

''Truth is, there's been no one in six years.''

Edier was with no one during the entire time they were were seperated (10 years of celibacy). He chose to not be with anyone in any way nor did he want to be with anyone...there is a scene in the beginning of the book about him in a hotel room but it's not anything (the girl dances and tries to seduce him and no touching occurs of even an ounce of desire) he is tricking her to her reveal what she knew related to his enemy.

They have no contact for about 7 years until Ella throws a big birthday party to lure him out (he is forced to attend) and see each other once more. This is where the attraction starts and they cannot move past what they feel when they see each other. I loved them together, it was so beautiful to see these two damaged (in different ways) people want to be anything but broken, sadly though after that night he walks away, and they separate for another few years.

''That's the closest anyone's got to that part of you in three years''

At this point Ella is 22 and working for a newspaper company (like her mother did). Edier is basically King and ready to take over almost all the US based business from Dante. He barely speaks with his parents (once a year with his mother). He lost his way and feels hollow whilst dealing with his past that keeps haunting him in more ways than one.
Ella investigating for an article is thrust into what is truly going on with Edier and stumbles upon things from his past that should have never touched and that causes things to escalate.

''My love for Ella has never faltered, never strayed...I may have pushed her away to protect her, but for three years it's rested clean on my surfaces, while everything else has grown rotten and toxic''

The loyalty, the devotion, the LOVE. He protected her at every turn while being apart. Constant surveillance, constant contact with her bodyguards. He was there even if she had no idea.

''This is the place I share her pain. I've been right there with her through it all''
''I've watched her cry herself to sleep, night after night, on the screens in my Black Room''

He has an entire room right next door to her apartment with surveillance cameras. That's where he spends most of his free time and nights. With her.

''He's discovered she's my whole fucking universe''

His enemy is after her and will do anything to get to her. Even was able to enter her apartment and leave her a gift she believed was from Edier, almost got her killed. Someone has betrayed him, and I swear I couldn't have guessed it was his good friend (his lawyer, whom he saved and gave so much to help her). It's because of her things were able to transpire in ways Edier couldn't see and predict.

He has his entire chest tattooed for Ella. Little suns around and marks to tally the number of days they have been forced to be apart. Frankie and Edier sit at the same god tier table.

''Tell me forever back, and I'll kill for it. I'll kill for you''

Finally! I swear I waited so long for him to just allow her to be his. For her to know how badly she is his world and how much he loves her. I won't even mention the number of times I cried reading this book, but this part had me needing a few moments.

''My new kingdom is missing a queen''

Forced to send her away, he takes drastic measures and lets Dante know her lupus has gotten worse (which it has, and she is on chemo pills) and Dante takes her away, but he is not aware of the actual danger that looms over Ella and Ella is able to convince him to let her stay with Anna at the orphanage in Colombia.

''There were three devils in this game, and one's outplayed us all''

The moment he realizes Queenie betrayed him and Ella is exactly where his enemy wants her to be. We get the scene where there is an attack at the orphanage, and you know damn well Ella was taken.

My prediction on who the alchemist is:
Nacio aka Edier older biological brother. He is described as being on the same side as the evil that his father and the men around him. His father is dead and so is the former cartel boss as it was confirmed but Nacio was never found.

Also, Edier and his mother were not running away to the orphanage for safety, nope. She was sent there with Edier by her husband because she had an affair, and this was their punishment to make amends. Edier was sent there to cause death and he never did.

If you actually read the review up to this point thank you! I'm sorry it was so long but I had a lot to say and so much I haven't even said tbh :D

Can't wait for part 2 and the conclusion to the story!

From age 11, Ella Santiago has felt an inextricable connection to Edier Grayson. When he disappeared on one of the worst days of her life, without a word, he shattered her heart. Years later when they find themselves in the same city, keeping his distance from Mi Cielo isn’t as easy. However, outside forces are conspiring to keep them apart at all costs.

Set in the Santiago world, there are new players as the second generation ascends. A puppeteer known as The Alchemist is pulling strings and it’s not clear why. Yet, Rush & Ruin is so much more than your standard mafia romance. There are, of course, the requisite criminal affairs and ruthless violence. But all this is background noise for the angsty romance and suspenseful, coming of age storyline.

Ella is a fierce and determined warrior with a light that won’t be dimmed. Edier is tortured by his secrets and the past, hellbent on keeping Ella safe from his darkness. The definition of yin and yang, their chemistry is explosive and their love is palpable.

“This pull between us is the rush to our fcuking ruin. We’re still killing each other slowly, even after all this time.”

Cameos from our favorite Santiago world characters was the cherry on top of this 5-star sundae!

A cartel/mafia book so good there is literally nothing I would change. That’s how much I absolutely obsessed over this!!

5/5⭐️
3.5/5🌶️

This story is such an interesting take on mafia romances because it brought with it an element of witchcraft, occultism, dark magic.

I loved all the comparisons between night and day, darkness and light and sunshine and midnight. Edier is dark and troubled character who doesn’t think he deserves Ella’s pure light. He’s absolutely obsessed with her and will do everything in his power to keep her safe even when he can’t be with her…like renting out the apartment to her next door and watching her through security cameras 🤩

Quick recap….
We have Edier who was adopted into the Grayson cartel family at the age of 11. He grew up in another cartel where they dabbled in dark magic and he was sent to the Grayson’s to exact revenge but we don’t know exactly what that is yet. His believes he is safe when the Grayson and Santiago cartel’s unalive his entire family because he hated them so much. However, Edier is sad and lonely at 11 and suffering from depression and that is when he meets Ella she’s a bit younger than him but he describes her as his ray of sunshine and that she is his whole “sky” 😭😭 unbeknownst to Ella..that day they met she saved him.

Fast forward a few years and there is an attack on their home where a witch basically from a rival cartel curses Edier and Ella. Edier leaves and doesn’t see Ella for many years.

Ella suffers from Lupus but Edier believes that’s the curse. They reunite years later and they’re attraction is even stronger and they can’t stay away from each other no matter how much Edier tries. He believes he’s cursed and has to find the source from his past so he can keep Ella safe.

It does end on a cliffhanger but the next book is out in December. As I said, nothing about this book I would change…it takes a lot for any book to stay with me but this one will!

I will keep on saying this till everyone believes me. If you have not read Catherine Wiltcher, you are missing out on one of the most talented authors in romancelandia. And if you are a mafia romance lover and have not read her mafia books..what are you even doing with your reader life? Rush & Ruin : Part 1 was a beautiful combination of brutal and ruthless violence, raw and messy and angsty feels, sinful and filthy passion..and you have an unforgettable unputdownable irresistible dark mafia romance.

This one starts in the past and through few time jumps ,fast forwards to present time. Santiago cartel princess Ella Santiago and her father's best friend & most trusted man Joseph Grayson's adopted son Edier Grayson became true friends. But Edier's past came hunting and he pushed away Ella to protect her. Now she is in New York City. The city he rules. His obsession for Ella has only grown over the years. Ella doesn't understand why he is so aloof and cruel. The danger is not over. And it may be the death of them.

Edier Grayson..you own me completely. Like how epic is this man? I never doubted the author's ability to deliver an epic antihero but damn she has outdone herself. A broken man with so much darkness in his past. A vulnerable man with the worst kind of self hatred. A shattered man who hides his pain behind his ruthlessness. And this same man moved heaven and earth for the woman he loves. The way he loves Ella made me die a thousand times. Swoony feels like a completely wrong word for Edier but damn the flutters in my heart (and other places) are hard to express. And obviously Ella had to be the strongest woman to face the supposed monster. She is going through so much physical pain but she fights like a true warrior. She is fierce and resilient while being soft and compassionate. An ordinary woman would see Edier's hard face but she sees beyond his mask. Their hearts belong to each other but so many power plays and mind games are around them. The enemy is a cunning and devilish one. And Edier's first instinct is to send Ella away but it may not be enough. The action and the twists were unreal here. I was gripping my seat and biting my nails while my heart was melted and destroyed beautifully. The Wait for part 2 is going to be a painful one but I know it will be worth it

I reviewed an early copy voluntarily

"He's a million memories that no ocean of time could wash away."

Ella and Edier share a perfectly imperfect love destined like the stars in the sky. The pull between them is so magnetic, filled with such raw emotion and naked vulnerability, but also consumed by unspoken secrets. I loved Ella's perseverance and strength, her independent spirit in fighting for her freedom to find her place in the world. She never let her illness define her, working hard to reach her dreams.

Weighed down by conflicted feelings, Edier runs from the demons of his past, trying to forget, but Ella sees beyond his flaws, recognizing the good in him. Powerful and ruthless but also broken and complicated, Edier is consumed by his love for Ella. Obsessively protective and possessive with an arrogant sense of control, he wants to keep Ella safe above all. I could feel the struggles and pain they each carried with them along with the intensity of their undying love.

The perfect juxtaposition of light and darkness, sunshine and shadows, their lifelong love was simply beautiful to watch. Set in the Santiago world, this is the first book I've read by the author and I was completely immersed in the story and intrigued enough to want to read through the backlist. The writing is exquisite with every detail carefully thought out and purposeful. I loved the inclusion of black magic as it added an interesting spin to the story but never overpowered the true magic of their love. And I simply adored Dog.

At its heart, this book is about sacrifice and choices, about what you would do and what you would give up for those you love. The love between Ella and Edier was all-consuming, filled with passion and fire, and it took my breath away, breaking my heart into a million little pieces. As the first part of a duet, this leaves off on a cliffhanger and I'm looking forward to reading what's next.

** Special thanks to author Catherine Wiltcher for sending me this ARC to read and review. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own. Available October 25, 2022. **

Oh Lord from Where I begin this review. I don't want to give a spoiler. I will start by saying that this book is even better than what I expected. Edier Grayson is a perfect protective alpha, he loves Ella with all his soul same both were children. But he is full of darkness, he believes he doesn't deserve Ella’s love. Don't matter how fast and far Edier runs he cannot run away from his fate and the love of his life because he and Ella are soul mates. They are united by a red thread that neither time nor distance can destroy, nor can Edier himself destroy the strength of this love.
Ella is one of the strong heroines I've read, she is tired of trying different and been overprotecting from her loved, she will prove to everyone that her illness does not define her, she is a Santiago and strength runs through her veins. Guys you have to read this book I promise you, you won’t be disappointed. Catherine Witcher is everything a reader wants to read. This book is a roller coaster of emotions, a love that hurts your soul, an unbridled passion, a heroine who will not give up, a passion that will thrill you, and an alpha man, possessive and jealous. A love that was born in childhood and will live on for eternity.

Edier and Ella are forever.

Speechless! Where do I even start to explain what an absolute stunning piece of literature this book is. And made even more difficult as I don’t want to give anything away.

Here goes. If you’re a fan of Catherine’s work then you already know what a wizard she is with words and how she can make you feel everything while weaving a superb web of twists and turns you’ll never see coming. With all that in mind, this book blows it all out the water! Edier is damaged, dirty, dangerous and so very, very sexy! And Ella is everything you think she isn’t! Damaged yet strong, fierce and loyal but willing to fight for what she wants and go after it regardless. This book will have your heart quite literally in pieces, so be ready.

I can’t wait for part 2 of this superb duet!

Catherine Wiltcher is mafia done right! Rush and Ruin combines everything that makes her one of my go-tos- mafia intrigue, twists and turns, complicated and insanely compelling characters, angsty romance, and so much spice and swoon. This might be one of my favorite reads from her- I couldn’t put it down. As usual we have a complex and interwoven tale rife with mafia drama, but it’s also insanely romantic. Heart-stoppingly romantic- I ravenously consumed this story, swept away into this epic love story.

Catherine gives us star crossed loves in cartel princess Ella and the dashing childhood bestie Edier, the adopted son of her father’s most trusted man. Edier has a dark past that causes him to try to push Ella away for her own protection, scared his ghosts will curse her. He’s detached and cold on the surface, but unlike other mafia tropes, Edier remains steadfastly in love with her, never far. Their love spans ages (and our narrative does too).

I just adored these characters, this story, and the intersection of their lives with the world we love (hello Dante cameo). Edier gives Dante a run for his money in my heart- the possession, the protection, the DIRTY MOUTH! He’s the dreamy mafia antihero we all crave - one with a facade of cruelty and indifference that masks a broken and complicated soul, a past that is painful and traumatizing. The way he loves Ella- OMG chef’s kiss! He would lift mountains to protect her- there’s so much love. It’s swoony perfection. And Ella- my, what a compelling leading lady. She’s strength and grace, tenacity and gentleness- so much steel yet so vulnerable all at once. The chemistry feels so heavy- that powerful, soulmates, epic romance kind of connection- and the steam. HELLO DIRTY TALK. GIMME.

We have tons of action, a fast-paced plot, tons of action, and of course a dramatic cliffie. Catherine perfectly marries a clever storyline with real emotive poignant- each element weaves together perfectly, and I’m desperate for book 2!

Undeniably one of the best mafia romance out there!

I cannot believe I'm saying this, but this book is up in there with Dante Santiago's level!

I cannot also believe I'm saying this, but after Santi, I didn't think anyone can match up with Dante being the master alpha, but good Lord, Edier is the new definition of H🔥T!

I love everything in this book. Dïrty talking, intense, moody, grumpy hero and all sunshine, never annoying heroine!

There's so much more in the story that the author is slowly unraveling and I cannot wait for December to arrive to read the next story!

Another five star book from one of my very favorite authors, Catherine Wiltcher. I feel like I read this book in one breath. It was so good.

Edier has had a horrific life. His birth parents are the worse of all evil. Truly. He was forced to do horrific things just to survive his family. Being from Columbia, black magic is real and when a bruja witch curses him - it threatens his only light in his life. His sunshine. His friend. Ella Santiago.

This story goes back and forth between the past and present to build up Ella and Edier Grayson’s story. They knew each other as children, and grew up around each other. Ella always loved Edier and vise versa but Edier has his reasons so keep far away from Ella after feeling like her disease is a curse that came upon her because of him.

His past is creeping up into his present and he’s going to fight it head on. Ending whatever is slithering into his life. And it’s evil.
“I don’t slip, Mi Cielo. I make noise and cause dissidence.”

Ummm… we get cameos through the book with other characters. Daddy…errr… Dante Santiago is still as dominant and possessive as ever. I just love this world and every character so much. Edier is possibly runner up with Dante as being the most possessive MMC.
It’s a dark romance. And juicy. And full of dirty talk. And full of non stop action.
It was perfection. As usual with this author.

Rush and Ruin Part 1 Set in my favourite world THE SANTIAGO WORLD.

“I’ll fucking destroy you,” he warns again. “I only know how to take.”

EDIER was not what I head in my head when I went into this book. I thought he was going to be this sweet man who loves the people who adopted him.
But that wasn’t him. He is cold, he is ruthless. He is a man living in his own dark mind. He is living is his past. He can’t escape it. He is emotionally unattached. So everyone who cares suffers for it. That includes Ella.

Edier and Ella spend time together growing up. They have a bond like no other.
Edier grows up in a cartel that is dark. This cartel believes in darkness.
When Edier was a boy his birth father made him do awful things to people. Joseph and Dante save him from his family. Joseph and Anna take him in and try to give him. Different life.

Edier lives with his darkness from his past though and he believes he is cursed. The relationship with his parents is strained and I can’t wait for that to unravel. Hopeful in the next book.
The day Edier life changes is when Ella needs him the most, he disappears and starts his training to be apart of the Santiago cartel. Years later in NY. Edier past comes back to haunt him.

Ella is now in NY starting a life away from the mafia cartel. Their paths cross. The friendship they had when they were younger is there still but it’s now romantic. While Edier is dealing with his ghost Ella is running right to them.

This plot is one of the best plots Catherine has written. Edier story, his personality was like being brought back in time to when I first read Heart of Darkness. It fresh. It’s different, it gripping and I got all the same feels I got when I first read ever read Catherine’s books.

Dante and Joseph take seat because Edier has taken over.
This makes me so happy. This is what these next generation books should be about. Dads finaly take a step back and these young boys become men. Edier knows his places but he doesn’t step down to anyone not Ella’s dad Dante and not his own father.

I can’t wait for the next book. I was actually dreading the ending but it’s left me so excited for part 2.

I know I go on Catherine but please please give me more of Rick Sanders AKA Mr President.

I miss Rick, I miss Aidan a lot. Every time they pop up I just crave them lol.

If you haven't read this book yet add it to you tbr now.
I tried not to give too much of the plot away as a lot of these reviews have all the spoilers lol. There are a lot secrets and things I didn't share.
This book is a MUST READ. IT can be read as a standalone but there are a lot of character that already have books. If you read this without reading the rest of the books it will honestly make you go back to the beginning. Which I recommend everyone to do.

WOW, what a rush, what a ride! This book totally caught me off guard. Rush & Ruin was my first book by Catherine Wiltcher on my road to discover new to me authors for #RARE24Paris

I was immersed into the story and characters from the first page to the last. It was hard to put down and pulled me into it's dark world like a magnet. The writing style is captivating, the story is fast paced and thrilling.

Ella is such a strong heroine, I love her for her strength and power. I love how she doesn't back down from a challenge and how she knows to play chess (literally and figuratively).

And I love how devoted Edier is to Ella, how broken he is and it broke my heart every time he felt he needed to leave her for her own good. However, every time he left her, he made her stronger.

Can't wait to continue this story! The cliffhanger is killing me ;-)

Starting this review it’s difficult. This book, in my opinion it’s another level of writing for Catherine. I wanted to read Edier story for so long and nothing prepared me for this level of heartache. Every male character from this world are unique and hardened by their pasts, and with Edier was no different. There’s so much weighting on his shoulders, so much guilt and baggage that it just breaks our hearts. Ella is a force of nature. She’s no victim of circumstances, she doesn’t allowed her illness define who she is, she’s a survivor through and through.
This book brought feelings in myself that I can’t explain. It’s raw, it’s pure animalistic passion!
Two souls that run in opposite directions but cross each others paths from time to time.
It’s something written in the stars, other level of love!
It’s absolutely amazing and worth the top five best reads of the year.
For me, a person who reads a book a day, it’s something hard to achieve. But I can assure you, this book it’s another level of amazing!

Edier is typical of Santiago's man: ruthless, relentless, possessive, jealous, overprotective, he loves hard and deeply, even if to do so he has to hurt her and keep the distance. His past, kept secrets and fighting demons only deepens the gap between him and Ella, cartel princess, who doesn’t give up in her fight against her illness, battling day by day to live a normal life.
16 years ago they started as friends, with time between them, her condition, his secrets, couple encounters became enemies to lovers. Passionate, devoted to each other, loving with all their hearts and souls. They are intense, gripping and captivating. Hot and sexy, spice up chemistry and tension oozing from the pages, and all I wanted was to be able to lose myself more in their story.

She’s done it again! Wiltcher has taken the deliciously dark characters that so many love to hate, and extended their world into a new generation, for even more storytelling. All I can say is, “Buckle in!”

Full of mystery, intrigue, and heartbreaking sincerity, the newest generation of cartel will make you fall so in love, you will turn a blind eye to their despicable behavior. I am excited to see where this story takes us.

As Always, Happy Reading!

Flabbergasted. Speechless. Bewildered.

At this point, you should know anything and everything Catherine writes (especially her mafia/cartel world) is an infinite stars from me.

But also, the cliffie? What the fox!? Book 2 is gonna be a blast, I’m sure of it.

Edier is such a dark man w a troubled (actually it’s even worse that troubled) past (mmc),no wonder he needs Ella’s (fmc) sunshine to live.

I do not wish to share anything—afraid I might spoil it for anyone who wants to pick R&R up.

But just so you know, Dante (first gen of Santiago, the Patriarch) will always be my first love; out of all Catherine’s character. If only my husband calls me Mi Alma too. Lol. Ok bye.

This is set in the Santiago World and I am here for it.
Ella Santiago, middle daughter of Cartel Kingpin Dante has loved one boy her entire life, his darkness is soothed by her light.
Long held beliefs and an unwavering devotion have kept them apart but that hasn’t stopped Edier Grayson from protecting her from a distance.

This is the story of childhood friends, and coming of age all done as members of the most notorious cartel in history. There will be violence and there will be blood but there is also love.

This can be read as a standalone but if you haven’t already I highly suggest you go back and read The Santiago Trilogy, especially after encountering Dante in chapter six - that was my fav chapter in the whole book!

"Just know that shadows can't exist without their sunshine."

Have you ever waited for a book and almost cried when it showed up? That was me for this book.

Think about to the Santiago Trilogy, Devils and Dust, Black Skies Rivera, The Grayson Duet, Corrupt Gods Duet, City of Thieves, etc.. those have prepared you for one of the best books you will ever read.

Our characters:
Ella Santiago and Edier Grayson, also known as the couple that might be able to top Dante and Eve.. but unclear.

Ella is a Santiago, and if you have read any of the other books, you know that her father, Daddy Dante, is 100% an alpha male. Add in Ella who tricks her dad into letting her go to NYC and you know this book is about to be amazing

Edier is a Grayson, he has 2 parents who love him so much, and he is so dark and unable to see that they love him-insert me crying. He blames himself for everything that has happened to Ella, his life, and honestly probably random person across the worlds life too- that is just the type of person he is.

The book is split into Parts. Part 1 starts with a flashback, again spoiler alert but you have an idea of the sickness Ella has if you have read other Wiltcher books, the start of the book shows how Edier thinks she got it. Heads up, this book has some black magic in it.

Fast forward to our pride and joy Ella in NYC, keeping how she feels away from her family so her dad doesn't break down the world and drag her back to Columbia (like we know he wants to), and OH SHE RUNS INTO EDIER, at this moment I died and went to heaven (spoiler alert, these two canoodled on her birthday a few yeas prior to that, Daddy Dante almost killed Edier and then Edier ghosted our girl).

Edier is a piece of work, he is so rude and gruff to Ella. I honestly did not like him a bit in the beginning, he was almost too abrasive and rude and I was like sir you need to calm down. BUT OH NO, you understand why he is the way he is, everything he is doing, he is doing for Ella- que me crying again.

I can't go into a lot of detail, because honestly this book is a book that needs to be read and embraced without any spoilers. These two characters are soulmates, honest to God- soulmates. I have never read characters that need to be together so badly, and have been soulmates for most of their life. The things Edier has done for Ella, that she doesn't even know about, are astonishing, he has no limit to what he would do to keep Ella safe. Ella is trying to be strong, for herself and her family, and add in a mixture of hot steamy scenes with Edier.. SHE IS AMAZING.

This book was 100% a 10/10 and worth the wait. You get plenty of loved characters, Daddy Dante is in full crazy man mode- like insert him roaring and yelling and going wild multiple times. Grayson is there, roaring too (a lot of these men roar), we even get a hint of Aiden. Seriously, this book is amazing- everything about it is Catherine Wiltcher. The writing, the plot, the flow of the book- it was perfect. The only downfall is that now we have to wait for Part 2.

I received an ARC Copy for an honest review.

FOR-A-FULL-REVIEW-VISIT

MY RATING: 5*
RELEASE DATE: 28 October 2022
CLIFFHANGER: Yes

ARC was kindly provided for an honest review

My problem with Catherine is, I’m having a hard time letting go of Dante Santiago. So every time I read one of her books, the standard is so high because as far as I’m concerned that trilogy is up there with the greats. Fuck Shakespeare, Santiago trilogy is the shit. So I’m going to go ahead and say this before I move onto this book. It his me hard while I was reading this book; DANTE IS GETTING OLD just because his kids have to grow up and get their own damn books! I don’t love that at all.

Now that we’ve got that out of the way…Edier. I’m going to keep this as spoiler free as I can. If you’ve read any of Catherine’s books you already know she’s a bad bitch with words. If you haven’t, well…I want you to know you’re wasting your life.

The amount of giddiness I had when I saw this book had landed on my kindle…you have no idea. It didn’t disappoint at all. As expected with Catherine, there was drama, violence (yes I love it in book) smut -be a bit more graphic next time Cat, will ya? I’m a perve when it comes to smut to books. I want so much detail I might as well be there in that room with them. Anyway, I digress. As I was saying, the story line was sick, there was suspense, the heartbreak, and anguish was just there for the reader to experience too.

That witchcraft thing threw me for a loop when I first came across it because I’ve never seen that in a mafia romance. And you know what, once I decided to trust the process, it worked VERY well!

I have to say, there were a few times I thought Edier wasn’t going to make it from me either killing him for his indecisiveness but when Dante walked out of the shadows at Ella’s birthday party,

description

I was certain he was a goner!

I loved our Ella. Her silent strength, her gentleness and kindness, her smarts just did it for me. I think she’s a perfect blend of Dante’s shrewdness and Eve’s humanity. So, she just works for Edier.
I have high hopes for book 2. I am hoping for reconciliation in the Grayson manor, closure for Edier and lost of happily ever after and god please a grandchild for Dante. I would love to see him as a grandpa.

This book was everything. It gave me the feels but I especially loved seeing glimpses of Catherine in the book…that scene about chemo side effects… that hurt my heart because I knew it was from experience and you could feel it in her words.

So Catherine

Wow, this story smashed through all of my expectations and then some! Both lead characters make this an intense and exciting read. I always enjoy cartel stories and this has to be up there with the best.

Told from both Edier and Ella’s points of view it allows readers the opportunity to get to know each character more intimately, plus it gives important background information. Told in three parts, the story starts from when Ella was five and Edier was eleven, their connection was easy to see even then. It moved on to the present day and holy moly, talk about a fiery, tempestuous chemistry between these two.

I absolutely loved how strong Ella became with such a zest to live a ‘normal’ life and a strong-willed determination to do so. She wasn’t afraid to stand up to Edier and I totally loved that about her too. Edier had such an off and on/hot and cold approach to Ella and it annoyed me to no end, however, I did understand where he was coming from and why he was doing it. For that reason alone he rose much, much higher in my estimation of his character. Ella describes Edier as, ‘Pig-headed, dogmatic, rude, bossy, infuriating, enigmatic, obstinate…’ and he is but he does have a flip side.

Although this is a dark story there is a lighter element threaded throughout which is the fabulous humour, especially the witty banter between Sam and Edier. Yes, there is a witchcraft/voodoo vibe, but as it’s explained in the beginning, it’s very cleverly crafted into the story as a part of the suspense, not as the usual paranormal aspect in a book. You will realise as you read how cleverly this author has used this element.

I look forward to the second half of this duet and congratulation this author for her wonderful book one.

This is hands down one of the best books I've read this year, and by far one of the most romantic ones as well. I've never read this author before, but I do love mafia when it's done right, so I couldn't wait to get my hands on this bad boy-- even knowing it was part of a duet and the likelihood of my heart being broken at the end was high, it was all very much worth it!

Ella and Edier are truly written in the stars, twin flame soul mates who need each other so much, but circumstances of Ediers upbringing and his demons have devastating consequences..so he leaves Ella in hopes she will be safer. But he's never afar; no, unlike the usual mafia trope where the man screws everything he can to forget about the woman he loves, Eldier craves every bit of Ella he can get, and keeps very close tabs on her, even if she is unaware. He may have left physically, but he is still with her every step she takes. She thinks he left her behind, but his devotion and love for her run so deep, that *everything* he does comes down to protecting her at all costs.

I will skip over the plot line -- which is Hella intense by the way -- because you NEED to experience the beauty of this book and this couple on your own. This was filled with so much beauty, hope, longing, pain and suffering, but a timeless love that just made my heart go all gooey. This couple is one of my all time favorites and I'm claiming them both now!!

As for the twist, I honestly didn't see that coming, and I cannot WAIT until book two to find out what happens. Don't sleep on this duet ya'll!!

**I received an ARC of this book and these are my honest opinions **

This is going to be kinda long so I'll post highlights now:

Plot: Intense
Recommend: Highly
Characters: The loves of my life.
Overall: Exquisite
-

Now for my ramble: the moment my obsession with Edier Grayson began was back in Tainted Blood when Santi and Grayson entered a bad man's den and the man scolded Edier for being so cold and humourless. Santi was hot tempered and fiery whereas Edier was just stone cold and heartless. No smile. No smirk. No humour. Just cold. hard. business. and fuckkk in that moment, I.was.obsessed. I've always liked them mean and this book showed him as the asshole I craved to see. I love Ella, I really really really do. But the moments he was cruel to her were gold.

"Well. Well. Well. The reporter bought a spare. Or haven't you made the cut yet, Ella?"

Girls, shots were FIRED that day.

But I certainly do think him being cold made me swoon more when the sweet side of him came out. Edier is weak af for Ella and when the sweet side kicks in, oh my gosh...

"Fuck your make-up. You don't need it anyway. You're beautiful without."

This book had so many great moments, I don't remember the last book I highlighted so many passages. It was the combination of the first gen: Daddy Santiago, Eve, Rick, Aiden, Grayson and Anna and the second gen, Edier, Ella, Sam, Thalia and Santi that made this this concoction of a story so damn delicious. .

Also, a whole dedication and shout out to my main side chick Sam who made me laugh out loud so many times. His lines cracked me up, this book definitely wouldn't have been the same without him.

There's cartel drama, love, lust, hate, witchcraft, enemies, jealousy, possessiveness, over the top obsession aka heaven in a book. Can't wait for book two.

Thank you, Catherine Wiltcher for providing an ARC. You're an absolute gem of a writer.

I have to admit this was the hardest review that I had to do! I say this in the nicest way possible, I just couldn’t get my thoughts together because this was just EPIC. I mean, my god Catherine! You outdid yourself. 𝐑𝐮𝐬𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐮𝐢𝐧 was everything and more than what I even expected. I tried my best to slow down and immerse myself in the story because I just did not want it to end. 𝐄𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐫 and 𝐄𝐥𝐥𝐚 have easily become my favorite couple. The way I felt every single emotion and how easily I connected to both characters. Wow. If I could rate this more than a 5 ⭐️ I would!
If you love dark romance, mafia, cartel, angst, friends to enemies to lovers, please pick this up.
-
𝐄𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐫 will have you melting right from the beginning. He is filthy, he is sweet, he’s just perfect! Even though he comes from a rough childhood and carries a cursed past, he still has a heart.
𝐄𝐥𝐥𝐚, my sweet 𝐄𝐥𝐥𝐚, she’s a warrior and she fights every day of her life to be the best she can be. She deserves the world and as 𝐄𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐫 said, “𝑰 𝒄𝒂𝒏’𝒕 𝒍𝒐𝒔𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒘𝒐𝒎𝒂𝒏. 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒊𝒕 𝒕𝒂𝒌𝒆𝒔. 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒎𝒂𝒔𝒔𝒂𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒔 𝑰 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒊𝒕. 𝑰’𝒍𝒍 𝒃𝒖𝒓𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒉𝒐𝒍𝒆 𝒇𝒖𝒄𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒍𝒅 𝒅𝒐𝒘𝒏 𝒃𝒆𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒉𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒆𝒏𝒔.”

Catherine delivered and I still can’t get over how I feel. I loved seeing my other fav men! Dante as a protective dad, just wow 🫠🥵. Rick and Sam, 😮‍💨 and Aiden! Yeah, I was seriously having some major flashbacks. As I said, this book was phenomenal. It is part of a duet so expect a cliffhanger and be ready to suffer with me until the next book drops in December. This is available now and it’s on KU!

This new to me author has me all in a twisted heap after finishing book one. Because that ending absolutely wrecked me. I was not expecting the twist that Wiltcher was throwing out there.

This is probably the most unique mafia romance I have ever read. The dark magic and curses that are peppered in with all things mafia and cartel, has this being something I am almost certain I have never read before. I absolutely devoured this fresh take on this amazing trope. It was a delicious and sinister turn from the norm.

Oh and the romance. Lord have mercy the romance. Having never read one of Wiltcher’s books before I wasn’t sure what to expect. But dang if it wasn’t blistering hot and completely savage. Edier was completely savage. Ruthlessly so. But I melted in his presence once I was able to get past that rough exterior of his. Because his dirty words wasn’t only affecting Ella. I was ruined every time he opened his mouth.

I am not sure how I am supposed to wait two more months to find out what happens next. But I will be waiting on pins and needles for it to release because I absolutely need it. Crave it. 5 Stars!

“What shall we talk about?”
“The sun.”
“What about the sun?”
“There are billions of stars in the galaxy, Mi Cielo, but nothing beats the sun...”

HOLY CLIFFHANGERS, BATMAN!!!
“Are you a chess player, señor? If so, you’ll know that the queen is always the most important piece on the board, not the king.”

What the ever loving WHAT?!?! The last few pages had me shaking my head and saying 'No! We can't be coming to the end already?!?' What am I supposed to do with myself after this?!?'
“Fall apart for me, Edier. The way I fell apart for you.”

You know that feeling you get when you are left on a cliffhanger from your favorite show? Yeah. That one. It's that same gut twisting feeling that makes you want to chuck your finished wine bottle at the screen because now you have to wait an eternity (it's really just 2 very slow months) for the next episode or season.
Rush and Ruin
Edier and Ella's journey is chaotic and magical and so many other emotions.
"In the end, it’s not just me that falls apart. We fall apart together."

I'll be over here waiting ever so patiently for book two....
"This pull between us is the rush to our fucking ruin. We’re still killing each other slowly, even after all this time."

I love books by Catherine Wiltcher. Her stories are always gripping, consuming and beautiful all the same time. Rush and ruin is another triumph. Ella and Eddier are soulmates, but it seems like other forces are writing their story. I don’t want to give anything away, as I feel I would ruin the experience for anyone reading it for the first time, but please believe me, this book is worth your time. It’s written so beautifully, yes it’s also scorching hot, but it also leaves you with a question, what would you do for your love? I can’t express how impatiently I am waiting to read the rest of Eddier and Ella’s story.
