Fannie Mae

The Federal National Mortgage Association, or Fannie Mae, is a major player in the secondary mortgage market. The company buys housing loans from issuers and either holds them or packages them into securities it sells to investors. Founded in 1938 as part of the New Deal, Fannie Mae became a shareholder-owned corporation in 1968. In 2008, in the wake of the Global Financial Crisis and a national crash in housing values, Fannie Mae was delisted from the New York Stock Exchange and entered government conservatorship. It returned to profitability in 2012.
