How Skateboarding Took Evan Mock To Touring With Travis Scott & Walking For Louis Vuitton

From swimming with sharks to modeling for Virgil Abloh

Evan Mock, 22, is currently living what many of us would see as a dream life. If he’s not shredding he’s either modeling for brands like Louis Vuitton and Alyx or shooting for Saint Laurent. And if that wasn’t enough to make you jealous Mock recently went on tour with none other than Travis Scott.

But how did this Hawaiian based skater go from shredding bowls to walking catwalks?

Growing up in Oahu, Hawaii Mock grew up to be a daredevil. The North Shore of Oahu is famous for having some of the world’s biggest and best waves and this is exactly where Mock learned how to surf and found a love for diving with sharks. At the age of 12, Mock picked up a skateboard for the first time and well, the rest is history.

Mocks rise to fame comes thanks to a combination of luck, a very humble character and a bold and individual style. Something that caught Tom Sachs attention at a skatepark in Oahu back in January 2019. In a recent interview with Vogue Mock talks about how it went down:

“Tom was like, ‘Hey, my friend Frank has cool hair like you, say what’s up to him!”

Sachs then proceeds to film Mock skating the Oahu bowl only to send the video to his friend Frank Ocean. The American singer-songwriter posted the video on his Instagram and Mocks follow count blew up instantly. The day after the 22-year-old skater was featured in Vogue magazine and ever since he’s been a household name in the modeling industry.

At this point, Mock has been involved with almost every big fashion brand out there. Alyx, Saint Laurent, and Balmain are some of the many brands Mock has been linked to. But modeling for Louis Vuitton stands alone as Mocks biggest achievement in the fashion industry. Within the span of a few months, Mock walked the runway and had a life-size mannequin made of him, all for Virgil Ablohs SS20 collection.

With both skating and modeling it’s clear to see that Mock doesn’t want to limit himself in his professional career. Having several projects going at the same time is common amongst creators nowadays. Just look at Kanye with Yeezy along with his music and Virgil designing for Louis Vuitton and Off-White while touring as a DJ. Mock is no different and in a recent interview with Hypebeast he thanks skateboarding for opening doors for him:

“I feel like skate culture kind of controls every culture. If you think about cool kids, every cool kid is a fucking skater and looks good, it functions as a platform to get into other industries.”

Mock talks about how skating often leads to a fashion interest, something he certainly experienced himself. With his own line of clothing “Sorry in Advance” already sold out everywhere it’s fair to say that Mocks flamboyant skater style fits perfectly in the modern streetwear era we’re currently living in.

The skating lifestyle also gave Mock a passion for photography. A passion that landed him a spot on tour with Travis Scott. Although the initial idea was for Mock to shoot Travis during the tour they ended up befriending each other and Mock joined in for the 2-week world tour.

It’s fair to say that Mocks year has been crazy, and although he went from skater to influencer in a day he remains humble and thankful for the opportunities he’s been given. It’s clear to see that there’s more to come from the Hawaiian skater that is currently working with Justin Bieber for a collab between Sorry in Advance and Drew, so make sure to keep your eyes open for that.
