Perio Workshop 2022 will draw up clinical practice guideline on management of peri-implant diseases

.

The workshop, held at La Granja de San Ildefonso, near Segovia in Spain, will consider 13 systematic reviews related to peri-implant health and the prevention of peri-implant diseases, and to the treatment of peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis. Participants will then work on creating an evidence- and expert-based guideline (S3 level) for the prevention and treatment of peri-implant diseases, which is expected to be published in spring 2023 in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology.

This would be the EFP’s third S3-level clinical practice guideline, following those for the treatment of stage I-III periodontitis and stage IV periodontitis.

Perio Workshop 2022 will be chaired by David Herrera (chair, EFP workshop committee), with Mariano Sanz as co-chair, and Tord Berglundh and Frank Schwarz as invited chairs.

Expert periodontists from Europe, Australia, China, and the USA, together with experts in other field of dentistry and relevant stakeholders will consider the evidence in four working groups:

  • Working group 1: Peri-implant health and prevention, chaired by Iain Chapple and Søren Jepsen, will evaluate two systematic reviews.
  • Working group 2: Management of peri-implant mucositis, chaired by Mariano Sanz and Anton Sculean, will discuss three systematic reviews.
  • Working group 3: Non-surgical management of peri-implantitis, chaired by David Herrera, Moritz Kebschull, and Maurizio Tonetti, will also cover three systematic reviews.
  • Working group 4: Surgical management of peri-implantitis, chaired by Tord Berglundh, Panos Papapanou, and Frank Schwarz, will evaluate five systematic reviews.

“The third clinical practice guideline of the European Federation of Periodontology is going to cover a challenging topic, since peri-implant diseases are highly prevalent, less scientific evidence is available when compared with periodontitis therapy, and it has been said that predictable treatments are not available for peri-implantitis,” said David Herrera.

“Let’s see what the evidence and the discussions bring, but I am sure that with the guidance of our methodological consultant, Dr Ina Kopp, an excellent clinical practice guideline will be developed to help practitioners and patients to take the best decisions in the different clinical scenarios.”
